I don’t have to go to work today, but I do have another distasteful task to perform – getting my car inspected. I typically like to let it lapse so that I get an “extra” month out of the deal (kind of 13 months for the price of 12), but now that I’ve gotten it to December the sticker color changes for 2014 so I’d be driving rather obviously with an out of date inspection. Plus I drive a pretty fair distance back and forth to work, and you never know when you’ll pass a gung-ho police officer (it helps if you only drive when the weather is really crappy, but you can’t count on that, even here during the winter). So for once in my life, I’ve decided to be proactive and get it done ahead of time.
As far as I know, everything is OK with the car, but you really never know. I keep trying to tell myself “it’s only money” but for some reason I’m as nervous about this as if I was taking the dogs to the vet (or, worse, if I had to go to the doctor myself). So I didn’t sleep all that well last night (though I did drift off at about 5:00, which is when somebody’s phone alarm went off and I had to get up and find the damn thing and turn it off).
Last night was better than the night before, though. I’ve been having my recurring problems with my feet again. This time it’s my right Achilles tendon and, worse, my left foot in general. The left foot is all kinds of swollen there’s a big old knot on it, and the night before last it felt as if somebody was jabbing my big toe with a knife all night long. Last night it only hurt when I moved it, so that was pretty good, and I can walk around without looking totally ridiculous today, mostly thanks to Ibuprofen and turmeric.
But enough about my toe. Let’s talk weather. They had some nasty ice storms “up north” (something like 30,000 homes without power – which is a pretty significant percentage of the population since there’s not exactly a high density of people up there) and to the west of us, but we just had rain. Lots of rain. The sump “pond” is definitely full. Good thing it wasn’t snow, I guess, or we’d have had a couple feet of it. Right now it’s still about 40° out there, but that’s supposed to change and the cold and snow’s a-comin’. White Santa better wear his long-johns, ‘cuz it’s supposed to be down into the single digits come X-mas morning.
Oh well, I suppose I ought to take a shower and get ready to be inspected. Probably ought to trim my beard, too. I’m starting to look like I should be on Duck Dynasty. Wonder if they need a new guy?
I read Cousin Itt’s quote about how Christianity is the only non-violent religion
Christianity is certainly not a nonviolent religion. But it shares its violence with all the mono theistic religions. By their exclusivity they spawn violence. Too many wars have been fought by monotheists in the name of their “my way only” religions.
Communities of polytheists certainly fought plenty of wars, but not over religion. They were able to include a bunch of new gods into their pantheon, like blended families. The Greeks and Romans are a great example. Native Americans were not threatened by Christianity ( at least not initially). They were happy to include a new god especially if they thought s/he would give them new powers and protections.
Many people have said to me that monotheism was a great advance but no one has ever been able to explain why or give me an example of the advantage a one god theory provides. I would be really interested in learning of one.
I’ve been lazy on about beard trimming lately. I had thoughts of getting rid of it altogether at a barber but that will wait. I figured the Santa thing gave me cover through the end of the year and now the DD controversy. I may just wait until I get a haircut and let my ‘stylist’ do it and take it from there.
Well, they got me on the windshield wipers (which were, coincidentally, on sale) and for a blown license plate bulb, but I otherwise came out of the vehicle inspection unscathed.
Done for another year.
Your toe sounds like gout. Is it?
(I, too, suffer from gout attacks.)
Well back when this got really bad before, I went to a podiatrist (took like 3 months to get an appointment – good thing we don’t have socialized medicine), and I didn’t have high levels of uric acid. I suspected it, ‘cuz my dad used to get it.
At this point, it’s not the toe so much anymore, but the whole top of my foot. And my foot is very swollen. I’ve been taking ibuprofen and turmeric to try and get the swelling down, and it helps if I don’t wear shoes. Or walk.
It usually starts with going up and down stairs or a ladder a lot. Also if I wear tight shoes. I think what started this was when it was really cold out and I had to plow the driveway. I wore a couple pairs of thick socks and crammed my feet into my boots.
Unfortunately, once it starts, it seems to last for a long time.
Made it worse yesterday, going up and down stairs a bunch of times because *somebody* wanted a new shelf in the laundry room.
I wonder at times if I have the gout when my feet bother me. I haven’t been up ladders a lot but I do run up and down stairs to my ‘office’ and KK has been known to shimmy up a skyscraper on occasion.
You reminded me that I want to try this.

It sounds like a good bedtime treat. I think I have a YouTube with a little different recipe.
Moving from the toe to the top of the foot sounds right. mine has gone to the ankle, knee, finger, wrist, shoulder, …
Gout is so ‘popular’ in Taiwan, that colchicine is available over the counter. It does nothing for the pain, but it stops uric acid production and lets you wash it all out. (It also starts explosive :crap: but that means its working.)
Hope you feel better.
Apparently beer is about the worst thing for gout. I don’t consume much of the other bad stuff, but I definitely indulge in the beer. I guess I need to knock that off, though I’m not sure what else there is to live for.
Being able to walk around pain free yet sober and depressed, or hobbling back and forth to the beer fridge in pain. Doesn’t seem like much of a choice.
Why, oh why, can’t they make pot legal in NY?
There are several YouTubes. I like the additional honey or maple syrup.
Yusef Lateef, legendary Detroit jazz man, dies at age 93:
‘An enormous spirit’
😎 🙁 :gate: :blues:
That was gorgeous. So much room for the music to breathe.
I just mailed some home-made CD’s to my sister yesterday including “Eastern Sounds” with Yusef playing oboe, flute, tenor and a 6000 yr old Chinese clay flute which I’ve never tired of listening to since high-school.

I got signed up for that ObamaCare. A few problems but it was no more hassle than having employer based insurance changing every year with more money for less coverage and an often shifting company and provider list. I am glad so many people have it so good. Bless their hearts. I doubt that most of the whiners have even bothered to check out their options.
Great! My brother-in-law got coverage and is thrilled to finally have health insurance.
