This is it – the beginning of the only thing that takes the edge off the thought that winter is coming. NFL football. OK, so, technically football actually started on Thursday as they snuck in a game between somebody and somebody else (Green Bay got killed by Seattle, I guess), but we all know that football on Thursday isn’t really football (unless it’s Thanksgiving, but then it’s always Detroit and Dallas playing somebody and that’s not really football either).
Of course, I hardly ever get to watch football these days. Today, for instance, I’ll probably be out cutting the grass. I blew it off last week, and it’s gotten kinda long. And I’ll need to be doing some weed whacking, too. Last year I had free NFL Sunday Ticket, so I was able to not watch every game. But this year I’ll only be able to not watch whatever games are on locally (which are usually the only games I have any interest in anyway).
Truth be told, the NFL hold less interest for me every year and there’s just not enough time on the weekend to accomplish what needs to be done. If I had friends, it would be different and it would be kinda fun to sit around and watch the games. As it is, all I have are the dogs and they’re pretty indifferent to the games (and they don’t like it when I hoot and holler too much).
There’s a new version of WordPress out – version 4, “Benny” named after Benny Goodman – and like an idiot I updated yesterday. This caused some kind of problem with the thing I use to detect and deny robots and spammers the ability to register as users. As a result, I had to turn that off, and now the spam registrations are coming in fast and furious. And there seems to be a problem with every other de-spammer plugin, too, ‘cuz they all seem to break things. It’s kind of annoying.
So, anyhow, I’ve set things so that you need to have an approved comment before your comments will get shown. I think everybody here will be OK, but if you notice something not showing up, it’s because it’s being held pending my approval.
Sorry about that.
Oh well, time to finish my coffee and then get busy. Back to work tomorrow.
At least I still have a couple of months of horsehide and living in SF left.
I gave my blessing on the 50th b’day of one of my wonderful cousins (it’s the nieces and nephews that can be a pain) for a VPI Fightin’ Gobbler upset of the OSU Buckeyes yesterday. That was a once every 50 years deal.
Good for the Hokies. Also good that we don’t have to play them this year (unless we meet in the ACC Chamionship game – wouldn’t be surprised if they made it, but SU? We’ll be lucky to get past Central Michigan – who stomped on Perdue yesterday – next week).
Just got an e-mail from the Central New York Working Families Chapter Chair telling me to vote for “their” candidate for City Court Judge in the Democratic Primary on Tuesday. Not sure that’s allowed, since I’m not a registered Democrat and even if I was, I don’t live in Syracuse.
Besides, the WFP is dead to me now.
Can edit?
Yes I can.
The furniture has been re-arranged! I’ll have to spend some time finding sumpin’ to beach about.
😉
I can edit, too!
Even replies?!

The current format shows that I recently passed AWOL truck driving photographer Seanie who today celebrates a birthday.
Looks like too many smileys.
Well, I think his Bills won.
Yeah, the Bills actually won. And so did the Jets, amazingly enough. Now we’ll have to see if the Giants can get a win and make it a 2-0 week for former SU player head coaches.
Any idea how you got that spam message? I added a new anti-spam thing, and am wondering what you did to piss it off!
Ausgezeichnet!
Wow, yeah, smilie overload. Guess I’ll have to get rid of some of them.
It wasn’t the number of smiley selection but that I was trying to use 5 in one message. The two worked.
Ah, gotcha. I couldn’t get to the bottom of the smilies list, but it was due to the download toolbar at the bottom of my browser.
Condi Rice: The one person who could save the NFL
Condoleezza Rice made a startling admission to the New York Times in 2002. The then-national security adviser to President George W. Bush said it was “absolutely right” that she wanted to be commissioner of the National Football League. This was no joke. Rice was serious, but she wanted it to be known that she wouldn’t want to do it “before Paul Tagliabue is ready to step down.”
Well, Tagliabue is long gone and his successor Roger Goodell has made a mess of it. Time for the former secretary of state with an intense love of the game to step in and save the NFL.
I, too, would refuse the job unless Pete Rozelle retires first. Until then, maybe Condi can take over as GM of the Raiders (assuming Al Davis is OK with it).
