Happy Beer Day! It was on this date in 1933 that the Cullen–Harrison Act went into effect, legalizing (after what much have been a dreadful 13 years) the sale of beer for the first time since 1920 (it was only 4% beer, but, hey, beggars can’t be choosers). On that day, 1.5 million barrels of beer were consumed nationwide. Is that a lot? I don’t know. According to this page, in 2011 Americans consumed 6.3 billion gallons of beer. So, let’s see…. That would be about 17,260,274 gallons of beer per day. There are 31 gallons in a beer barrel, so that would be about 556,783 barrels a day. Roughly a third of what they drank back in 1933. Pretty impressive, especially when you consider that the US population was only about 125.6 million in 1933 and 311.7 million in 2011. If April 7th is Beer Day, then April 8th has got to be Hangover Day. But then, I generally celebrate both most every day.
It is a little strange that I went to the Giants home opener yesterday and had not 1 beer (11.25 each). I did have one before hand with a pizza before entering. I wasn’t able to get one on the way home because I thought I couldn’t get on the ferry and took the bus. Today I may have to catch up a little.
I would probably not opt for an $11.25 beer either. But I’m kind of a cheapskate.

Our home opener was snowed out.
For the first time that I remember in my lifetime, Presedential candidates seem to actually be paying attention to NY, with visits to Syracuse scheduled by pretty much everybody. It’s a shame it takes so long to change your party affiliation in this state, ‘cuz I’m a registered Green Party person at this point and it takes like a year to change for primary voting.

At Newark Airport heading up to Syracuse University to give a talk in Beatles’ Songwriting class tomorrow
Oh, cool. A shame I have to go to work. Not that I’d be able to go to the class, but it’s always a shame I have to go to work.
From what I understand, Dianne Feinstein wasn’t always an idiot. But it’s way past time she was put out to pasture.
She’s never been an idiot but always had an authoritarian streak. I always hoped she would get over that. Doubtful she will be put out to pasture. I thought she may come back to be governor at some point but it is probably too late for that and with the traffic and all, Sacramento is no longer an easy 90 minute commute to frisco. Also, who may replace her is is a scary open question. I don’t like the Dem bench too much and the repug/tea bag party occasionally slips one past the goalies.
My guess is she won’t stand for reelection.
Hey, I just found out it’s International Louie Louie Day.
I think the horse knows that tune!

Another one goes over to the Dark Side.
Tom Hayden has decided to switch from Bernie to Hillary and has written about it in the Nation. Interesting, at least to an old leftie, like me.
That’s pretty tortured reasoning from Tom. But, lucky for him, I’m sure Clinton will be the nominee.
