Watched an odd movie called “The Minus Man” last night, with Owen Wilson as a serial killer. Sheryl Crow was his first victim (in the movie, anyway). Janeane Garafolo was in it, too (she had a crappy little dog that ate cat food). She played a postal worker (so did Owen, actually, eventually becoming a letter carrier). I thought that was rather fitting. Janeane said, “a carrier can’t clerk, and a clerk can’t carry,” which struck me as quite prophetic while I was watching, but, now, not so much. And Dwight Yoakam was in it. He pops up in some odd little movies (like Sling Blade; BTW, I do a better ‘Karl’ than Billie Bob Thornton, mmmmm).
It also had Brian Cox, who makes me think of Albert Finney when I see him. His wife was played by Mercedes Ruehl, who for some reason makes me think of Sue Grafton, though I have no idea why. Did she play a character in a movie based on a Sue Grafton novel? Did they even make a movie out of a Sue Grafton novel? I know she wrote those alphabet novels (“B for Bimbo,” “C for Cadaver,” or something), but I’ve never actually read any of them. I did hear her (Sue) on Diane Rehm once, and she sounded like a nice person.
I don’t know how the movie ended, because I ran out of beer, and it was either go to bed or get into Granny’s wine box, and cheap wine makes me feel kinda crappy in the morning. Plus red wine gives me really dark…well, never mind; too much information. Anyhow, when I gave up on the movie, Janeane was swilling Jack Daniels out of the bottle, and getting cozy with Owen Wilson in her log cabin (which was kinda cool), so I don’t know if she became a victim eventually or not.
I’m sure I’ll catch the rest of it one of these days.
Holy shit! Do you realize there’s less than a week left in June? All of our comedians are dying, and our politicians have all sold us out (at least the ones that aren’t dead or dying). Especially the ones we thought would save us. Oh, wait. we’re all too smart to have thought any of these people would save us.
Aren’t we?
Have a nice day.
First? Jeez, it’s been a while.
I don’t know how the movie ended, because I ran out of beer
:omg: :omg: :omg:
Well, no wonder you’re freaking out over dead comedians and bad politicians. Your brain needs oiled!
:40: :40: :40: :40: :40:
There, that’s better.
Remember, YES WE CAN! And YES WE BOTTLE!
No draft, though. At least not yet.
PJ, at least you saw the beginning of the movie. I usually see everything BUT the beginning.
A US judge voiced doubts yesterday about President Bush’s assertion that his top advisers are completely immune from being forced to testify before a House panel investigating the firing of federal prosecutors.
US District Judge John Bates repeatedly challenged an administration lawyer to cite legal justification for the refusal of former White House counsel Harriet Miers and Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten to obey subpoenas to appear before the House Judiciary Committee.

Mohan, thought to be the world’s oldest Indian rhino and the first to wear shoes, turns 39 this month. But as he kicks back and relaxes in a Florida old-age home, his former caretakers, especially in Washington, can’t help but reminisce about their time together, like former groupies in a rock star’s shadow.

I saw that movie, PJ. I can’t remember if Janeane gets offed either because I hated the movie so much I shut it off. Owen Wilson plays kind of a simpleton, I recall.
An eight-month McClatchy investigation in 11 countries on three continents has found that Akhtiar was one of dozens of men — and, according to several officials, perhaps hundreds — whom the U.S. has wrongfully imprisoned in Afghanistan, Cuba and elsewhere on the basis of flimsy or fabricated evidence, old personal scores or bounty payments.
McClatchy interviewed 66 released detainees, more than a dozen local officials — primarily in Afghanistan — and U.S. officials with intimate knowledge of the detention program. The investigation also reviewed thousands of pages of U.S. military tribunal documents and other records.
This unprecedented compilation shows that most of the 66 were low-level Taliban grunts, innocent Afghan villagers or ordinary criminals. At least seven had been working for the U.S.-backed Afghan government and had no ties to militants, according to Afghan local officials. In effect, many of the detainees posed no danger to the United States or its allies.
The investigation also found that despite the uncertainty about whom they were holding, U.S. soldiers beat and abused many prisoners.

Hess To Join Air America As SVP/Programming
NEW YORK — June 23, 2008: Bill Hess is the newly named SVP/Programming for liberal talk network Air America Radio. He’ll be joining AAR on July 14, coming in from Clear Channel/Washington, DC. He came to the cluster as PD of WASH-FM in 2003 and in 2006 added OM duties for WTEM, WTNT and WWRC, which were recently sold to Red Zebra Broadcasting.
“With more than 30 years in the radio industry, Hess brings his expertise in programming, content creation, promotions, marketing, and sales,” AAR Chairman Charlie Kireker said. “We are confident that he will help Air America achieve stronger ratings and revenue success, as we continue to provide listeners with entertaining and thought-provoking programming throughout this critical election year.”
Hess said, “I strongly believe that the future success of our business will spring from the audiences we cultivate, stimulated by the talent we nurture and attract. I am excited by the vision and commitment of Charlie and his team to build on the foundation that’s already in place at Air America Media — both on-air and online. I can’t wait to get started!”
Before heading to DC, Hess was Director/Programming for three Clear Channel stations in Providence, and he’s also a former Regional VP of Capstar Communications.
