Every once in a while, I stop to think about how much has changed in the relatively short time that has been my life (so far). Oh, there’s bad shit, yeah, but there’s good shit, too. Or pretty interesting shit, at least.
I mean, when I was a kid, TV was black and white, and there was only AM radio (now, there might have been FM at the time, but not up here that I recall). When FM finally rolled around, there weren’t many stations, but damned if there wasn’t a hell of a lot more to listen to. The best around here was WOUR, 96.9 in Utica, They played the kind of stuff you hear on the Technicolor Web of Sound (except, as we moved into the 70’s, we started to get into punk and ‘new wave’ and what was ‘alternative’ music before they coined the phrase), and lots of other nifty shit that you’d never have heard on AM (like anything longer than 3 minutes). Now, of course, radio mostly sucks here. That’s part of the bad shit.
But, check it out. Communications satellites were basically born when I was. If you wanted to have satellite communication, you had to do it when the bird was above the horizon in both places. Until they managed to get geostationary satellites in the air. Now, I get my teevee from a satellite (actually an array of four or five satellites). I get bummed out if I can’t get a decent wireless Internet connection, and I can’t remember the last time I was out of cell phone range.
Amazing how far things have come. But I still miss those early days of FM.
This kid was adopted by a local family here (they adopted five Sudanese refugees). It’s really a nice story. The community raised $17,000 to send his adoptive parents and his high school track coach to Beijing.
All the technological whoop-de-do has been a double-edged sword for me.I was in love with the space-program from the beginning of seventh grade when Shepard went up til the first moon landing. I went through a lot of changes from ‘ 61 to 69 but it seemed like despite all the differences between people we could still come together as one whether it was landing on the moon or the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl.
Now we are so fractured as a nation with our minds preoccupied by shiny sound and picture machines; what ever common purpose we shared
going in a million different directions on the internet……we’ve all lost control of our lives while we were picking a “Survivor”.
I’m as guilty as the next person…but if I could choose, I’d take the old shit. Now, back to catch up on “Mad Men” while I sync my Ipod.
This is nice.
Well, at least both the homeless and the hospitals benefited. In fact I’m sure the hospitals preferred the homeless to the patients that needed hospitalization because the homeless were cheaper and increased their profits. The sick folks, on the other hand, were a drain on profits.
Healthcare for Profit does not work.

Unless I heard this in my sleep, I just thought that perhaps McGrumpa is just confusing his economic policy with his energy strategy and ridiculing O’Bama.
He thinks he is supposed to stop inflation.
Ha, good one.

There are chickens in Montclair, too! The woman who owns them runs the local Fair Trade store. She also told me about the lasagna method of gardening, which hasn’t worked for me that well, but its my first year. I did finally have my first home-grown salad.
Hamdan, Bin Laden’s drive, having been convicted of being Bin Laden’sdrive but acquitted of conspiring, was sentenced to 66 months. He was given credit for time served so he will have another 5 months. And hen what? He’ll go back to being imprisoned at Guantanamo because he is an enemy combatant. Forgive me if I find this absurd!

RNC Chairman, Mike Duncan sent this email to Rethugs:
It seems the Democrats’ would-be president of the United States of America really believes that the rest of the world’s problems, and approval, trump the interests of Americans when it comes to how we live our lives and where our money is spent. […]
A bill he has sponsored in the U.S. Senate, the so-called Global Poverty Act
(S. 2433), would raise the amount of American tax dollars allocated to United Nations’ redistribution efforts to $845 billion.
That’s $2,500 from every American taxpayer, when many in our country already are struggling to make ends meet.
The problem, of course, is that there is no such plan. It’s a right-wing myth that has been making the rounds for months, and to which the Republican National Committee has finally given its imprimatur.
At issue here is a U.N. initiative to implement its Millennium Goals on global poverty, which would, in fact, total $845 billion over 13 years — from industrialized nations across the globe.
The Congressional Budget Office did a cost-estimate analysis of Obama’s legislation, co-sponsored by Joe Biden, and found that U.S. responsibilities “would cost less than $1 million per year

CHICAGO – In a hurried move to put an end to the tensions between supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and those of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, the Obama campaign has offered former President Bill Clinton a speaking role at the Democratic National Convention, NBC News reported Thursday.
The Clinton’s have accepted the offer, and Bill Clinton will speak before the vice presidential running mate speaks, NBC’s Andrea Mitchell reported.
Wonder what his fee will be?
:rofl2: Enough for you or I to buy some land in Costa Rica and live for the rest of our lives. Elitists. 😕
My guess was it would be sort of close to what the leftover campaign debt would be. I think we will be cut out of this deal.
