Another day, another low for the stock market as the Dow Jones opens below 8,000 for the first time since 2003. This should usher in more dire news for NY State, and probably another round of cuts for where I work. We’ve had to absorb three rounds of cuts so far, and, as we’re a public hospital and the last refuge for the sick and poor (not to mention we’re the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the region), we get screwed from multiple directions (and not in a good way).
First, we don’t turn anybody away. In fact, other hospitals turn the poor and uninsured folks over to us. So if the Governor cuts Medicaid payments, we have to bite the bullet and treat those people for less money (not that Medicaid was paying a whole hell of a lot to begin with). And as more and more people are out of work or just unable to afford health insurance, they also can’t afford to self-pay when they or their kids get sick or are in a fire or a car accident or whatever.
We’re also a teaching hospital, and part of the State University of NY (SUNY) system. SUNY is another favorite target of the Governor’s, so we’re getting cut to death on the academic side as well. According to our Governor, times are tough, so State employees need to forget about their lawfully negotiated pay raises for a while. Jobs are frozen, but since times are tough, there isn’t the amount of turnover there used to be, so we aren’t saving enough money. While they say no plans are in the works, it’s only a matter of time before the layoffs start. Oh, and with the loss of all the manufacturing jobs over the years, we’ve become the #1 employer in the region, too. So times will get even worse for those businesses that depend on our employees, which means even more people out of work and without health insurance.
In other words, the worse things get, the worse things get.
Now, I understand the Governor inherited a pile of shit from Pataki, but, in lieu of raising taxes, he says cuts need to be made in public services, healthcare, and education. Seems like there ought to be something else to cut, doesn’t there? And, really, if we can bail out Wall St. (and maybe now the auto industry) with billions of taxpayer dollars, can’t we have a buck or two to bail out schools and hospitals?
😀 morning everybody
It’s getting very cold, here. That makes it even harder for me to contemplate going to work.
It’s very strange, but trickle down economics never works when it comes to spreading the wealth but it works amazingly well when it removing the wealth. Things are not going well, for sure.
Oh well, work I must. I’ll try t remember to be grateful that I have a job.
The book I’ve been using for years is “Yoga, The Iyengar Way” by Silva, Mira And Shyam Mehta. It has really good pictures and descriptions. Good luck!
My little town
I’m listening to WAMC out of Albany on the intarweb, and they’re talking about the enormous shitpile that Obama is inheriting, and the challenges that we’re facing. It’s enough to drive me to drink.
I dunno if you guys caught yesterday’s MaronvSeder show but here is my email in response to Marc’s bet with Sam and Marc’s request for spinning the recession in a good way.

Hello all, I haven’t been around much lately so how is everyone? I put a link to an article below in light of the meeting we had at work with our regional VP. It was the usual pep talk crap that I could care less about but this guy brought up his disdain for the Employee Free Choice Act, which of course would make far easier for employees to unionize. This company has always made it clear how much they despise unions, and if I didn’t need this job so desperately I’d have walked up and popped him one (another effect of turning 50 next month, I finally don’t give a shit what anyone thinks about me)
I’ve always been a strong believer in organized labor, it’s what helped build the middle class, but lately all the pundits and experts have coyly and not so coyly been blaming the unions for all the automakers’ troubles. Read the article to see what actually transpired over the last 60 years.
America Needs a Strong, Unionized Auto Industry — That Requires Government Action
t’s really simple: good economic policy requires that more and more Americans make higher wages, not that more and more Americans make lower wages.
GOP Congressman Zach Wamp (a likely candidate for governor in Tennessee) explains the Republican economic philosophy to Chris Matthews:
1. Low wages are a good thing
2. The less health care the better
3. It’s time to let people learn their lessons the hard way

Marc should just peel the grapefruit and eat it like an orange.
Less waste. More fiber. :knit:
I didn’t realize that Whole Foods is anti-union (we don’t actually have any around here), but looking at their record, it appears they and their CEO have a long history of anti-union actions. Too bad. Guess I’m no longer sorry we don’t have one here.
On the bright side, Al Franken is now down by just 177 votes with 19% of the vote recounted (though he was down by 174 earlier this morning with 18% recounted, so he’s lost a couple votes.
Is the lieutenant gov. of Minn. a Dem.?
Economics and calculus = attack!
Re: Whole Foods.
Well, that makes me even happier that I don’t shop there. It’s pretty damned expensive anyways. It’s for yuppies. I paid $8, not realizing how much it was gonna be, for a friggin’ slice of pizza that wasn’t even warm, though it was sitting under the “heat” lamps. Plus it was incredibly greasy. I read that Safeway has good quality food, except I find them kind of pricey, even with your data collection savings card. Trader Joes is cheaper for eggs and butter and other basics. If I want free range meat I go to Sprouts. But I get most of my food from the Farmers Market where my money stays in Az.
Oh, Heron,
The yoga poses that my book has for back aches are Standing Maricyasana, Bharadvajasana, Trikonasana, Parsvakonasana, Ardha Candrasana, Uttanasana, Jathara Parivartanasana(knees bent), Ardha Halasana, and Viparita Karani.
There are more but those helped a whole lot.
Re: 10
Maybe Marc doesn’t like to get his hands all sticky.
In that case, he shouldn’t peel it at all, and eat it like an apple. Even more fiber!

Heh. I missed this one during the election.
yeah, that one and the Wassup one were my favorites.
Bringing “Jurassic Park” one step closer to reality, scientists have deciphered much of the genetic code of the woolly mammoth, a feat they say could allow them to recreate the shaggy, prehistoric beast in as little as a decade or two.
The project marks the first time researchers have spelled out the DNA of an extinct species, and it raised the possibility that other ancient animals such as mastodons and sabertooth tigers might someday walk the Earth again.

I forgot my calculator and my eraser for the test. Luckily someone that I usually sit next to had an extra machine. I had to give it back to him before he left so I was sort of in a bind at the end not being able to double check my answers. Though I did stumble on a few problems, I think I did ok.
Here’s one that I should probably know but just wrote d.n.e in a panic.

Fook him!
Nice to see Andy here. Where is Art Norton?
I fucked up on some easy graphing too.f(x)= x^10 – x^9. I know how to graph it but sitting there when time is winding down, stress really fucks with my mind. That may have cost me 5-10% or so.

Jeff Farias is on now.

Investigation ties pet chain to puppy mills
Many Petland store dogs bred in poor conditions, Humane Society finds
ane Weaver
Health editor
After an eight-month investigation, the Humane Society of the United States accused Petland, the national pet store chain, of selling dogs bred under appalling conditions at puppy mills around the country.
The animal protection group made the charges at a news conference in Washington Thursday. The investigation involved 21 Petland stores and dozens of breeders and brokers. The Petland stores are being supplied by large-scale puppy mills, although customers are routinely informed that the dogs come only from good breeders, the Humane Society said.
I was on travel in SoCal last week and I tried to eat in WholeFoods every chance I got. It may not have been the cheapest but I thought the deli foods were good and not overseasoned like the soups. And of course I had to pig out once at Todai. If you do not know Todai ….

So I was checkin’ the pizza prices in the WF in Tigard- $3.99 for a slice.
My din din cost $2.96 from the hot food bar. Trying to go for portion control around here.
Had to buy a new car battery today.
The only thing good is that gas is now half price!
Marc better worry about #28!

Palin is so incredibly out of touch. My gawd. Has the woman never heard of Tofurkey®? Her words coupled with what was going on behind her…well, it could not have been choreographed better – something out of a movie.
They need to trap those cats and have them spayed/neutered. That’s what my neighbor and I did in Jorgia. Of course, we didn’t have that many to deal with
Thank you vernon. I had may friend describing it to me on the phone.
Will she ever shut-the- fuck up? :barf:
