Turn signals are a sign to speed up and not let the bastid in, stop signs are but a suggestion, speed limits are made to be broken, shoulders are meant to litter on, medians are meant for stopping so that you can veer off to take the exit you pretty much missed, cars are meant for eating in and putting on make-up while driving…….

Recently some college students did a film project where they actually drove the speed limit (55) around the perimeter. TOTALLY screwed up traffic and put their lives in danger. Lots of people drive 80-90 on I-285. The film is available on the web somewhere but I can’t remember the site. 🙁

we had two days of two inches of snow. not much, but plenty enough for me, pretty to look at and then it’s gone. i moved here from northern michigan and don’t miss the snow one bit.
yeah and the last time i drove through atlanta there was a little snow so everybody was in ditches and driving like 40 miles an hour even though it wasnt icy at all why do people end up in ditches without it being icy? i dont get it!

i grew up in texas and remember water rationing, we could only water our lawns two hours a day every third day, i remember my dad going out in the middle of the night to water our lawn at the designated time, we had to replant our lawn a couple of times because it died, is that how it is for you in phoenix?
i can put up with a lot of rain after growing up in texas.

yesterday on my way to town i gave a ride to a woman who had lost all her teeth and whose face had wrinkles beyond belief and yet she was only in her 40s, a speed freak for sure, and she talked nonstop the entire way to town about global warming, pretty informed person, actually, but i was unnerved by time she got out of the car. she kept laughing that bush was such an idiot and didn’t think there was any global warming. i think everybody knows global warming is going on. add in el nino and la nina and hurricane season, and global warming seems to ratchet everything up a notch. everything feels so extreme weather-wise these days.
i read a recent article about how major cities that are low-lying on the ocean are going to be flooded in the next twenty years. there are two reasons, one is that there’s underground drilling of oil nearby (think of new orleans) or water extraction going on, which actually lowers the city. then two, the glaciers are melting, so the ocean level is rising. the result is that the cities will flood. i’ll try to find the article. major cities: i remember new orleans was on the list and all of bangladesh.
You know the crazy thing Foggy, we, here in Phoenix, have NEVER had to ration water in the more than 20 years I’ve lived here. Oh how we love our lawns! I guess we’re hogging the Colorado River.

When I woke up with the spasm, I used my moist-heat heating pad. Then I took an Aleve. Then I took a long hot shower. Then back on moist heat for about 10 minutes. Then I asked hubby to try to find the trigger point, but he’s not great at that, bless his flat little head.:doh: Then he gave me an Aspercreme massage. So far, not much change; usually I’d have at least some relief by now. I’m actually thinking of making an appt. with the masseuse at my gym (it’s closer than the chiro, and given my wacky running to Manhattan to pick up Otis schedule, probably makes more sense). I dunno. It’s a muscular spasm, at the bottom of the shoulder blade. And it hurts!:(
I should probably look up the Louise Hay affirmation–I know it has to do with lack of “support,” but frankly, I have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support (for Otis and for me) during this episode. But tell that to my body!
farmerkat, the constant rain 4 months of the year does get to some people. we have friends who go to the desert this time every year because they get seasonal affective disorder because of the rain.
but for me, i like the rain, i think it’s because of growing up in texas in the 1950s before air conditioning took over and before lake texoma reservoir was put in, which let us water our lawns even during a drought, like kristapea can in phoenix for the last 20 years. cool and rainy suits me just fine.
that said, humboldt county does have the state’s highest suicide rate. on the other hand, wyoming has a suicide rate twice the national average (i just googled it) and i don’t think wyoming has much rain.
maybe some folks are trapped where they don’t want to be? i think living in a red state like wyoming would get me down more than rain ever would.

Yeah, Isi. Where’s the “Issues” guy when we need him? Marc did say in one of his pre show transmission emails that the show would be heavey on the comedy, at least at first. So, we’ll see if he can even resist talking about the issues. I have confidence in Marc’s ability to tweak what needs to be tweaked to make a good show. He picked up the radio thing pretty quickly so I think he’ll get round to talking about the issues. Especially with such a demanding bunch as us!:nod:
citizenkahn , I agree with foggyblue, but til then…… try putting opposite arm around neck, resting other hand around upper arm to give support and pull in closer so your other hand can reach shoulderblade……..then see if you can “finger” hurt area….if you can get to spot apply pressure GENTLY-ish to hurt area.
You should be able to apply gentle pressure Directly — to disperse KNOT — you can feel where ultimate pain center is —————- It Will relax and disperse KNOT/SPASM to where you can feel the dispursement of muscle spasm…

So, for all my years of living in NY and working in publishing, I’m coming up short on recommendations for books “about” life in NYC, preferably fiction. (Can be any genre: mystery, thriller, plain old fiction . . .)
Amid all the Otis excitement, I began meeting for an hour of Italian conversation with a recent graduate of Bologna University. (I lived in Bologna during the early ’80s, haven’t been back in almost 20 years, and want to brush up on the language in anticipation of an anniversary trip with hubby in the fall.)
He asked me for 5 or 6 titles of books (in English) that would convey the flavor of living in the city. I swear, for the life of me, the only thing that came to mind was Harriet the Spy. (I spent a lot of time in kids’ books.) Maybe some Salinger, but I don’t think I want to recommend Catcher. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

went to the Red Cross today to “bank” my blood for impending surgery. They at first refused, even tho the head surgon at emory requested it! Two freaking hours later I left. I now have to wait for ANOTHER doc’s note before they’ll maybe draw it. They came up with a form I now need that several of the folks there hadn’t even heard of. They completely freaked out today (we had two people pass out breaking their jaws today, we don’t want you to break your jaw before you to surgery, the fda controls us now blah blah). I sat there calmly, saying, look, I’m not here to make your lives tough, I’m just here to bank the stuff…no biggie, really. ok guys? UGH. who the hell knows what they’ll tell me tomorrow. It’s a 55 mile drive up there and 55 back…not just a hop and back (AND through the ATlanta traffic, see above)

Sounds incredibly frustrating.:fustrate: I had to bank blood before surgery about 12 years ago; I did it directly in the hospital and it went much more smoothly. Sorry to hear them giving you the runaround, but maybe you should check with your doctors and see if you can do it at Emory? (We are talking “autotransfuse,” right?)
Who needs frozen peas? I have a freezerful of ice packs, donated by various chiropractors through the years! But my docs have always told me to use what “feels” right and I hesitate to use ice on a muscle spasm–it just seems like it would make things worse. But at this point, I might be in enough pain to “try anything.” Of course, falling asleep on the floor while petting Otis this afternoon didn’t help matters . . .:doh:
CK, i like heat, too, but was told that it gets the blood going and actually increases the swelling when you need to get swelling down and calm it. ice then heat, follow with ice. (BIOFREEZE ointment does that, too) the other thing i LOVE is a tennis ball – put in a sock, or not – and lie down and roll around until you find that pressure point. also have a large styrofoam roll and …. you get the point!! try not to let your shoulders roll foward, they tend to when you’re in that much pain; that will make it worse. sure hope you feel better!
emory doesn’t bank the blood, unforttunately. i’m thinking it’s so regulated now that they defer to the red cross. tomorrow is another day and I’m hoping they come to their senses.

Re: Shoulder spasm: Kahn, I get that all the time because I store tension in my shoulders. Get a tennis ball, or a golf ball if you can take it, and lie on your back with it under the spasmed part…then roll your back around on it till the spasm releases. Alternatively, if you can get someone to apply pressure with thumb — no rub, just press to release the spasm.
If you get a lot of muscle problems, you should order some Dit Da Jow. It’s a Chinese liniment used by martial arts practitioners. Order it here:

This is a very good kung fu school that Mr. Brilliant used to go to. He buys the stuff from them and you just rub it in liberally to muscle pains and it really does help. I kid you not.

Then I followed with ice (and Aleve–ahhh). I am seeing the chiro tomorrow afternoon; don’t remember if I said that already. But now (I hope) I won’t be useless until then and may actually get something done other than the all-important and heartfelt work of nursing a sick kitty! He’s still really out of it (I forgot to mention the morphine patch), but he did manage to get up and “walk” into the living room while we were eating dinner tonight.
Meanwhile, Elwood is totally confused. I swear, to him, Otis must look like Ralph Kramden as the man from space (or Ed Norton as same)! I couldn’t find an image, or I’d’ve linked it.

Usually it’s my lower back, but I’ve had problems all over me body. I recently had PT for an impingement issue in my right shoulder (same side), but I really don’t think this is related, although it may have repercussions. I’m sure it’s stress-related, I just wish it would go away! I’m heading for bed but will check out the link tomorrow. Aspercreme usually works pretty well on aches, but not so much on spasms, so I am open to anything!

Anyway, I was trying to sign in on my mobile internet explorer and one of my usual passwords worked…so I went and dug up the old email with my password from before which is lower case letters and umber…but when I tried that I also got a error incorrect password again…so, PJ, can you sed me my password again to make sure Im using the right one? If we changed our passwords after the initial sig up the its one thing. If it required numbers and letters then its another thing. And if its the number assigned by the system then its a differet thing altogether. And is it case sensitive?

CK-I know that heat and cold ad all that work somewhat but probably if its that bad you need some muscle relaxants. I use Valium for that because it is actually a muscle relaxat. Maybe not the best but the one I tend to have around because I never take it when they give it to me for things like MRI’s or whatever…Drugs might ot be PC but they have their place and muscle spasms are a good place to use a little something. I hope you feel better…too much stress and running round…Try to take it easy!

I guess I just really dont miss LA and that whole lifestyle. Its just that in the mornig when I get in the car I listen to Rachel first because I need to know whats going on, and I dont feel like Im getting the whole news from Marc.But that doest mea I dont love him…hes just more funny than news right now….
