Not much coming to mind this morning, so I reckon I’m forced to resort to the weather. It’s cold (not Minnesota cold, but cold), there’s lake effect snow forecast for later on tonight, and then a storm moving in from the Roclies for Wednesday (they’re only predicting 5 to 9 inches for that one, but you never know). And here we are, down to 4 bags of pellets, and no relief in sight.
Today the sun rose at 7:11 AM and will set at 5:07 PM giving me9 hours and 56 minutes of daylight. Of course the sky lightens before the sun has officially risen and so I am n o longer leaving for work while it’s dark. An act I find especially depressing.
Meanwhile, Bushie remnants are turning up everywhere. It seems that they had issued an order saying that all high profile illegal alien arrests had to be cleared with an ICE official. Apparently they were worried about the specter of arresting Obama’s aunt who is in the country illegally.
Perhaps exciting their base, the xenophobes, didn’t have the same wonderful affect on the rest of us.

Today hubby has to go to the doctor and I have taken the day off to accompany him. This is not because there is something serious. It seems this doctor only sees patients during hours which require the patients to take time off from work. As I need the car and so does hubby today, I get the day off.
Have a good one!
It’s only gonna be 64 degrees here today. It’s been in the mid seventies this month, which is kinda warm.
Will Obama Save Liberalism?
By WILLIAM KRISTOL
Published: January 25, 2009
This is all you need to know.
This is William Kristol’s last column.
 :fu:
I read that this morning, Vern. According to Kristol, conservatism worked and conservatives were right. Obama is really a conservative the only question being can he save “liberalism” by being a conservative.
The only thing that doesn’t work is Kristol’s logic or memory. He will not be missed.
The BBC aired a 27 minute report on healthcare in America. It has not been shown here but is available on Youtube in 3 segments. You will need a large box of tissues and a barf bag to watch:
Notably, the Albany Times-Union speculates that if a Republican does win the district, they may not be able to keep it long; with Democrats now controlling the State Senate in addition to the Assembly and the governorship, there’s a fairly good chance that NY-20 might be eliminated during redistricting, assuming it goes GOP in the special election.
Other candidates for elimination, depending on how things go in NY-20 and elsewhere, are NY-03 (Peter King’s district, for now), NY-23 (John McHugh’s district), and NY-26 (Chris Lee’s district).
King’s district may be won by a Democrat in 2010, and conceivably Lee’s district could as well, which changes the calculus. Along the same lines, if Democrats Michael Arcuri (NY-24), Dan Maffei (NY-25) or Eric Massa (NY-29) can’t hang on in 2010, their districts may be also be cut out.
We won’t know who the lucky one will be until after the 2010 elections, so this election cycle should be an especially interesting one for upstate New Yorkers.

What choices! Personally, I’d like to see Peter King go. I’d prefer that he be defeated by a Democrat, but failing that, eliminating his district would be nice.
Can some of the younger folks out there explain this whole Twitter thing to me. For some reason, I was compelled to sign up. And now two people whom I have never heard of are “following me.” This seems somewhat creepy to me (and rather un-entertaining for them, I would think, since I have yet to twit – or whatever they call it – yet). I mean, I rarely even think about my MySpace page – let alone get messages or whatever they call them, hardly ever look at my Facebook page, and only occasionally look at my LinkedIn page. So why anyone would want to stalk me on Twitter is beyond me.
I guess I’m just too old for this stuff.
Invoking President Barack Obama, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-MI) has subpoenaed former Bush Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove about his alleged involved in the political prosecution of an Alabama governor and the firings of nine US Attorneys.
The subpoena, approved by an earlier vote of the House, was issued pursuant to “authority granted in H.R. 5 (111th Congress), and calls for Mr. Rove to appear at deposition on Monday, February 2, 2009.”
Specifically, it enjoins Rove “to testify regarding his role in the Bush Administration’s politicization of the Department of Justice, including the US Attorney firings and the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman.”

Hey New York Times, as long as you’re cleaning house, can David Brooks pretty please be next? Between his Times column and appearances on the PBS News Hour, he must be raking in tons of dough, but he’s never right about ANYTHING.
I had to stop watching the News Hour on Friday nights because this guy is such an imbecile. The only thing he’s good for is making Mark Shields look smart, and I only agree with him about half the time.
(The implication, of course, is that people who agree with me are smart. But I digress.)
Here’s a deal for both the NYT and PBS: Replace Brooks with me. I can be half as stupid for half his pay. Both companies save money and everyone is less stupid. Such a deal! A win-win if I ever heard one.
Confidential to PBS: I have way better hair than Brooks too. And it’s not a combover.

Next Monday is Groundhog Day, and John Conyers will be roasting a piggie.

pj, maybe Painting Girl will drop by and help you. She seems to be a full on Twit now.
Twitter? That’s what the birdies do.
Kevin to replace Brooks. A very fine idea.
I think I’m just olden. I also have real doubts that anybody would actually care what I’m doing at any given moment. Especially since what I’m generally doing at any given moment is pretty much nothing.
Unless anybody cares that I’m currently roasting a couple of chickens for the dogs while watching last night’s Family Guy, which was a rerun, but funny ‘cuz there was a Nazi wearing a McCain/Palin button.
How many networking sites does one have to be on to be cool? I haven’t been able to find anything of value on them yet except for when I found a long lost friend. I’m always getting emails to join various sites and I registered for one once that showed me as available to all people that had gmail addresses that I’ve emailed in the past sometime. Everyone on that list was people I didn’t want to be contacted by so I tried to unregister.
This makes me proud to live in the wealthiest country on Earth.

I don’t think electric companies should be allowed to turn off power when extreme temperatures are happening. They blame it on the neighbors but how does a neighbor know what’s happening til it’s too late, ie ice on the inside of the windows or a stench. I hope someone at that company gets sued or at least has nightmares. :fu:
Saw Maron Saturday night in Maxwell’s. Since it’s an easy ride from my house I had no excuse. He did a lot of his latest lines, and although he didn’t do his new divorce piece, the autobiographical nature of his older divorce jokes are getting disturbing. I can see how he’s trying to turn his pain into humor, but sometimes it seems like he’s picking at an open wound with every performance.
Yes, he mentioned the cats. I made the mistake of mentioning Butch; normally in Maxwell’s the performer can’t hear anything an audience member says unless it’s yelled; that night, he heard me and said “thanks, my ex killed that cat.” Oops. I’ll have to download today’s podcast to see if he talked about the show.
Mishna killed the ever popular Butch?? Fucking BITCH! Now I really hate her! Gold digging, cat killing bitch. :jason:
Butch will haunt her the rest of her life. :billcat:
New Orleans Krewe has coconut for Obama
WASHINGTON, Jan. 16 (UPI) — A New Orleans Carnival Krewe, the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club, hopes to present President-elect Barack Obama with a specially designed coconut.
Zulu President Charles Hamilton Jr. left for Washington by train Friday morning, with the coconut carefully packed in a Faberge egg box, The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.
Hamilton has a good chance to make a personal presentation. Desiree Glapion Rogers, the incoming White House social secretary, is a former Zulu queen and daughter of the late Roy Glapion, who served on the City Council and was a longtime president of the club.
The coconut was painted by Keith Eccles, a New Orleans-area artist who teaches at Higgins High School in Marrero. Eccles handed it over on Thursday.
“This is awesome,” he said. “It combines New Orleans and D.C. Red, white and blue, and black and gold.”
This year, Zulu is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The club is the largest black Carnival Krewe.

Zulu to present Barack Obama with specially-commissioned coconut
When Charles Hamilton Jr. embarks by train this morning, on his way to witness the inauguration of the nation’s first African-American president, he will be bearing a precious and very personal gift.
Packed among his softest articles of clothing is a Zulu coconut, hand-painted with exquisite care and packaged inside a Faberge egg box, which Hamilton hopes to deliver to President-elect Barack Obama during his trip to Washington, D.C.

#17 is really disturbing.
In case you missed KO tonight. The right-wing wackos attacked Robert Reich. Please make them go away. I think I’ll email these jokers with Reich’s response, which is in part:

P.S. Kev in place of Brooks is a great choice!
RIP Butch :gate:
Yes, Kevin would be awesome. Why am I using the word awesome so much lately. Am I trying to revisit the 80’s or something? Someone help!
I am so fucking sick of Limprick. People need to stop listening to him. Or someone needs to kick his ass, either physically or in ratings or both. I don’t care. I’m fucking tired of that asshole dividing people. Fucking hate monger.
So glad to hear Rove is being subpeona’d. I wanna hear him squeal! Someone needs to super impose his face on Ned Beatty’s body in Deliverance in that special scene with the hillbilly’s in the woods. “Boy, you sure got a purdy mouth.”
KP,
:rofl2:
Here’s the famous scene. Try to visualize Rove instead of the great Ned Beatty. It’s way more satisfying. WARNING! Not for the faint of heart.
Sorry Sue! I couldn’t resist! Just put your hands over your eyes like my mom used to do at the drive in movies during those scenes! :rofl2:
