Look out, it’s Friday the 13th!
It’s already not a very good day in Western NY with last night’s plane crash in Clarence Center, near Buffalo, killing all on board and one on the ground. The house is still burning right now (and I get to see it live on the teevee). Having gone to school in Buffalo for a couple of years, I’m pretty familiar with the area. It’s maybe two or three miles off the NYS Thruway, so it must have been quite a site from there. Hopefully nobody I know was on the flight.
Of course, everything has to relate to either 9/11 or (especially if it’s Buffalo) Tim Russert, and in this crash we get a two-fer: one woman on the flight was returning to Buffalo for a scholarship being set up at Canisius high school in memory of her husband (who was killed in the twin towers on September 11th). Tim Russert went to the same high school.
Speaking of planes, Smithsonian Institution scientists have confirmed that the birds that brought down flight whatever the hell it was that landed in the Hudson River (you may have heard about that) were Canadian geese. The lo-cal news twit just told me that “they still don’t know if the geese lived in the area or migrated there.” Does that really freakin’ matter? Is it better, or worse, if these were “out of town” geese? Or is it that we must attempt to eradicate all manner of flying creatures within a 100 mile radius of every airport? Hey, let’s face it people, going up in the air in a big aluminum can carries some inherent risks. Deal with it. I just thank goodness these weren’t illegal Mexican geese, or we’d have the Palin family flying around the area in helicopters, blasting away with their shotguns.
It’s also shaping up to be a crappy day for my sister and her husband. Their 12-yr old German Shepherd is apparently in pretty tough shape, and they may need to make “the decision” today. When it comes to critters, my sister and I very much alike (I think we get it from our dad), and I know how she’s feeling. It tears me up just thinking about it. Why can’t dogs live as long as friggin’ parrots? It’s not fair, and it’s even worse that you almost always have to intervene and decide to let them go. I just want mine to be healthy as long as they’re around, and wake up dead one day. That would be hard enough to deal with.
Granny will be working on a crappy unit today, so who knows when she’ll get home. The other night, it wasn’t until 9:30. Don’t worry, taxpayers (or Governor Blinky), she didn’t get paid past 4:30.
Speaking of our esteemed Governor, he’s quite upset about Saturday Night Live’s parody of him. Apparently, making fun of him is responsible for the 37% unemployment rate among the disabled. I suppose his draconian cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Education, Healthcare, and Social Services will be good for the disabled, though. After all, the only real way to put them to work is to preserve the Bush/Pataki tax cuts for the wealthy while the Feds keep funding their “retention incentives” (thanks, Sue), which they hopefully won’t have to pay taxes on, because that would somehow be bad.
There must be some good news out there somewhere today. About all I can think of is that the Mega-Millions jackpot is up to $85 million. Of course, that’s really only good news if I win.
Maybe something good will happen during the day.
Retention awards were not my idea, some CEO (from Merrill I think) was caught on tape telling his people that bonuses would now be called retention awards. I know, it’s so ridiculous that it sounds like a joke, but these guys ARE a joke.
I’m sorry to hear about your sister’s dog, PJ. It is an awful duty to have to make the decision to end a life. My vet told me that as long as Minnie could eat, get around and poop, her quality of life was acceptable to her. That last weekend she ate but on Sunday she couldn’t keep her food down. I knew it was time, but it didn’t make it easy.
I think the worst part is that you can’t really discuss the problem with the dog. With people, whose desires can be learned directly, we insist that they suffer to the very end. I’m sure lots of people would like to be able to say that they are miserable and ready to go.
Because of recent suicides of army recruiters, the army is suspending recruiting nationwide to focus on “leadership training, suicide prevention and the health of its 8,900 recruiters.”
One commenter desribed his job:
I spent 4 years as an Army recruiter assigned to a recruting company in the NE from 1986 through 1989. I was successful earning a gold recruiter badge and several aawards. This was without a doubt the worst job in the US Army. Me and my fellow recruiters worked endless hours on weekends and holidays. Regardless how many applicants we enlisted it was never enough; those obnoxious bastards always wanted “just one more”. We had a Bn CSM who was a real whack job. He would conduct Zero Roller training at 0600 on Saturday mornings at the Bn HQ located on the 14th floor of the federal building in Syracuse. Recruiters had to drive there from all over upstate NY with some having to come from as far away as Rochester and Buffalo; a drive of 5 to 6 hours in driving snow. This whacko would have the janitors shut down the elevators so we would have to run up the 14 flights of stairs carrying our smart boards, school folders, “200” card boxes, and lead refinement lists (LRLs) to get to his office. Nobody deserves to be treated like that and it appears these arrogant A-holes in command still haven’t figured it out. Good luck guys and gals…Make Box!!! Those of us who went before you know all too well what you’re going through.

The Getz band opened for Chuck for a week at Tulagi’s approx 1974. I don’t have any personal memories of Gerry except that everyone in that band were really nice guys. Joe Labarbera on drums and Al Johnson (who went on to Weather Report) on bass. I think Gerry grew up in Rochester with Chuck.
They were scheduled to play a concert in Buffalo last night.
Mark A. Ciavarella Jr., and a colleague, Michael T. Conahan, appeared in federal court in Scranton, Pa., to plead guilty to wire fraud and income tax fraud for taking more than $2.6 million in kickbacks to send teenagers to two privately run youth detention centers run by PA Child Care and a sister company, Western PA Child Care.
While prosecutors say that Judge Conahan, 56, secured contracts for the two centers to house juvenile offenders, Judge Ciavarella, 58, was the one who carried out the sentencing to keep the centers filled.

FDR 1936:
For nearly four years you have had an Administration which instead of twirling its thumbs has rolled up its sleeves. We will keep our sleeves rolled up.
We had to struggle with the old enemies of peace—business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.
They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.
Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred.
I should like to have it said of my first Administration that in it the forces of selfishness and of lust for power met their match. I should like to have it said of my second Administration that in it these forces met their master.

I was concerned last night about some friends up in Buffalo but got the word today that they were OK. I did just get a note from the Kitchen Sisters about 9/11 Widow Beverly Eckert who was killed on that flight.
nice thing about still having a ga mobile # is you can call the ga congresspeople and tell ’em what arses they are. :nana:
God has blessed me with still another new station on digital TV that offers The Jim Bakker Show!
How come these stations always come through loud and clear?
God, she’s trying to talk to you, vern! :priest:
I don’t really have anything to say, just wanted to get this into double figures. Sorry I haven’t been participating much lately, just trying to work through some stuff. Happy VD to all.
