I was out getting some fresh air yesterday, in what was just about as perfect a day as you can get. Blue sky, about 70 degrees, with a nice breeze to keep it nice and cool. Turns out, I must be allergic to fresh air. Started sneezing, my eyes got all itchy and swollen, and my head felt like it was going to explode. My right eye is still pretty swollen, in fact. Now you know why I prefer the winter; no pollen. But at least there’s always the Sunday Boobleheads to cheer me up.
On Press the Meat this week, there is no Press the Meat this week. Instead, you can watch the French Open, if you’re interested in that sort of thing. In the womens finals yesterday, Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-2. In the mens finals today, some kid from Sweden takes on some kid from Switzerland. Eh, Bjorn Borg vs. Guillermo Vilas it aint. Then again, it also aint 1978 anymore, either.
At CBS, Faze the Nation has David Axelrod, and horrible little troll, Newt Gingrich.
On Fux News Sunday, Weaselface Wallace has Austan Goolsbee from the White House Council of Economic Advisers, the aptly named “Dick” Richard Shelby, Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, andFred Malek, chairman of Thayer Lodging Group and Thayer Capital Partners. Plus the fuxheads, of course.
Over at the Goebbels network, George Snufalufagus goes one-on-one with Hillary Clinton. Plus there’s a roundtable with George :jerk: Will, Claire Shipman, Republican ass Matthew Dowd, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution columnist Cynthia Tucker.
I reckon there’s more, but my eye hurts and I don’t feel like looking anymore.
I will, however mention an e-mail I got copied on from “a family member,” passing on word of a petition I should sign, due to an outrageous Senate action taken. The subject of the e-mail was:
Senate voted this week to allow ‘illegal’ aliens access to Social Security benefits
…and the main thrust of the e-mail was:
As stated below, the Senate voted this week to allow ‘illegal’ aliens access to Social Security benefits.
Attached is an opportunity to sign a petition that requires citizenship for eligibility to that social service.
It is, of course bullshit. And not even new bullshit. My reply (which I hope won’t cause too much hate and discontent), in part, was:
As for this petition, it’s an old one that’s been around since at least 2006 (then it was Bush, instead of Obama), and is completely false. A quick google search yields plenty of places debunking it, including snopes:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/immigration/petition.asp
The vote that this refers to took place back in 2006, and it wouldn’t have granted Social Security benefits to all illegal aliens but it would have allowed illegal aliens who had already paid into Social Security to accrue the benefits of their contributions. Didn’t wind up passing, though.
In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Illegal immigrants subsidize Social Security and Medicare with billions of dollars every year, which they never collect on, since they use fake IDs and can’t get benefits. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/05/business/05immigration.html
Take care,
Have a good Sunday, y’all. Not sure what Caribou Barbie has planned today, but I’ll let ya know if I hear, fer sure.
Draggin Grand was the happening event here in OK. I love love love some of those old cars. My favorite years are pre-1950. Of course, the 40’s were a sparse year for vehicle manufacturing. There was an old Lincoln in mint condition that was awesome.
It IS a good idea and pays itself in peace of mind for folks who live in the most reddist of red states where an idiot reactionary non-thinking rethug called our Prez “un-American” and claimed our President is on the side of terrorists – all while the Prez is traveling in the Middle East. (what the hell is wrong with these people???)
Actually want to watch our Sect of State.
(feel better pj & post those photos RG!)
In case anyone is interested in what is happening in the world today:
Hey ya’ll. Been pretty busy at the farm and trying to pack to move. Not that I know exactly where I’m gonna move to yet. :smack: My landlord was kind enough to rent me a storage space for 2 months so at least I have a place to store all this useless CRAP that I can’t seem to throw away. I’m even storing dirt. I got a bunch of soil from the farm for my garden and by golly, I’m taking it with me! Plus all the compost I made. It’s amazing how much stuff I’ve accumulated in 3 years, and much of it I MADE! :smack: I’m so glad I’m doing something that people actually consume. No accumulation of stuff.
I have an offer on a house and am waiting to hear if it has been accepted. The bank and I have been going back and forth. It’s listed at 75k, I offered 60k, they countered with $67,500, I came back with 62k and they’ve countered with 66k. I’m sticking with 62k. The house is in pretty good shape and it’s super cute. Has wood floors and the kind of front porch I’ve always wanted. But the neighborhood is kind of raw. There are a lot of empty houses and a really crappy trailer park on the next street. It’s across from a park that is very busy with baseball and tennis. But I have to be out of here by the 15th. It would be nice if I at least had a closing date. But an old friend has a guest house we can stay in temporarily. Only, I can’t have the dogs there because she has chickens, horses, cats, dogs and birds and my dogs are untrained and unruly. :slap: At least the weather has been somewhat cool this weekend.
Good luck, KP. I’ve been wondering how you’re doing.
When we moved to Red Hook, in the late 80’s, it was a pretty iffy place. The city had zoned it for heavy industry, private garbage companies (think Mafia) had set up shops, some artists were taking advantage of the very cheap and very abused housing and the police and all other enforcement agencies were ignoring the area.
Somehow, with lots of organizing, writing, demonstrating meeting and anything else we could think of, we began to turn things round. We kept pushing for more housing and were offered either low income housing or market rate (expensive) housing. Much as we yelled, we could not get mixed income housing.
We began to get rid of the garbage companies. They moved as the scrutiny we brought crimped their style. More artists moved in. More housing got renovated and then new housing began to be built.
The neighborhood is getting very gentrified. I couldn’t afford to move to Red Hook, today. It’s lots safer, there are stores and a great supermarket. But, it’s very different. More crowded. Less cohesive. And, the legendary Red Hook grapevine, which telegraphed all news and secrets with internet speed, has slowed. It’s just not the same, for good and for bad.
Nice photos from Lincoln, today.
God love ’em:
White House won’t cross firefighter’s picket line to attend mayor’s conference. :fist:
mornin gang!
Plus all the compost I made. It’s amazing how much stuff I’ve accumulated in 3 years, and much of it I MADE!

Well, shit does tend to pile up. :rofl2:
Glad you posted, Krista. I’d been wondering how you were doing. Thanks!
When Blogs Fall in an Empty Forest
Hey Kevin! :nana:
I admire PJ for being so diligent about the blog. I haven’t posted to mine in probably 2 years or more. 😳 I haven’t been able to muster the rage that I had then.
APNewsBreak: Major problems found in war spending
In its first report to Congress, the Wartime Contracting Commission presents a bleak assessment of how tens of billions of dollars have been spent since 2001. The 111-page report, obtained by The Associated Press, documents poor management, weak oversight, and a failure to learn from past mistakes as recurring themes in wartime contracting.
C’mon, is anyone here even surprised?
I hope all that works out for you Krista. Buying a house is a big pain in the ass.
Yeah, Andy, realestate is the biggest scam. How many fees can we charge people who need shelter? :fu:
