Well, back to the grindstone. No Clippers game tonight, but they’re playing at 7:30 on Tuesday and Friday, so it looks like we’ll get paypabck for our long shows last week with two shortened verson this week. Looks like Impeachment isn;t just for us leftwing loonies anymore, sine the WaPost had a front page article on it in yesterday’s edition. The Republicans are still spinning it as a “good” issue for them, but I don’t see it. Of course, most of the media is happy go along with whatever they say. And, really, why shouldn’t they, when an Elections Supervisor who blew the whistle on Diebold can’t buy voting machines, because the vendors want him to promise not to test the goddamn things in the future. Talk about ignominious.
Hey, at least we’re winning hearts and minds in Iraq. Too bad we’re losing heads.

Hey, man, where’s Riley?:growl:

Dear LJinOregon,
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
We are pleased to announce the rebirth of Air America Phoenix.
We will begin airing on April 3, 2006 at 1480 AM KPHX.
There is an old adage that success has a thousand fathers while failure is an orphan. This is truly a case where success has literally thousands of mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers. With the help of our dedicated listeners and concerned citizens throughout the US and abroad we have done what once seemed impossible. In one month we have turned back the tide and restored to Phoenix it’s progressive voice on the airwaves. We cannot begin to thank you all enough for all of your help and support. We the staff, vow today, to work tirelessly to keep you informed and engaged in the issues that matter and to make the new Air America Phoenix something we can all be proud of.
The Staff of Air America Phoenix:banana:
:fist: Air America Phoenix :bow: The Power Of People
Woo-hoo! Air America Phoenix has risen from the ashes, like a . . . a . . . like a phoenix!
My Saturday afternoon is California’s late night. I can listen to the show live and I forgot AGAIN! :fustrate: Chimps learn faster
PJ–
Thanks for that WaPo link. That story made me mad, though. I didn’t like that bit about “activists spending too much time dialing their representatives” (paraphrasing here). That’s a nice way to defuse it. Am I an activist? I think not. I am a concerned citizen, perhaps more vocal than the average citizen, but I would hardly call myself an activist. When the fuck are they going to listen to the PEOPLE, godammit?!?
And Barney Frank–I’m disappointed in him. (I may be way behind the times on learning of this, but I’ve been running a freakin’ hospital here for two weeks.) Now that Bush has
declareddecreed that his successor will still be dealing with the Iraq mess, we know he will never engage in debate about that mistake. So why not turn the discussion to impeachment?!?Well, I haven’t been this fired up in a long time. Guess I must be feeling better!
The other day I recounted my joke that I didn’t play the lottery because, What if I played the wrong numbers?
That’s the fucking Dems. So afraid of losing elections that . . . they just keep losing ’em. What if they choose the wrong issue? Somebody better tell ’em that, apparently, they’ve been choosing the wrong issue for years now. (Okay, I’ll tell them.) Geez. Hubby would call this “paralysis by analysis.” I hate it when it applies to me, but I see so clearly that it applies to these numbnut DINOs.
Please stop playing those 9/11 victims’ 911 tapes! (I’ve got NY1 on and they’ve been running the same segment at the top of each half hour for two fucking days!)
Oops. Think I killed the blog.
oh yeah!!! Air America in Phoenix!!!
:banana::banana::fist:
Kristapea should be excited!
she’s in arizona..right?:paranoid:

Hey quietgirl, what did you think of V For Vendetta? Gotta get to work, but will read your reply and respond later today. 😀
QuietGirl, do you think the US should open its borders and allow open immigration? If people are here illegaly do you think there should be any penalty? It seems that people tend to agree that we need immigration reform. How do you think immigration laws should be reformed? If we’re going to have immigration laws seems like they should be enforced. If not, then open the borders.
What are your thoughts on immigration laws in this country?
Morning!
Well, the one success our fearless
leaderpresidunce spoke out about is not such a success anymore.isi, did you see this?
The Great Immigration Debate: Getting Beyond Denial
FK, the link isn’t working for me.

glad you’re finally on the mend, CK.
shit.
try this isi, sorry.
crooks and liars has great video of lara logan blasting the latest despicable move by the bush gang to blame the media, love it when she rolls her eyes at the end when howard kurtz tells her laura ingram was in iraq for 8 days….let’s hope the media now gets really pissed shows no mercy to the bush gang….
KK, maybe tie a string around your finger. 😀
Just a few paragraphs from Paul Krugman today in NYTimes Melina or Jason usually post the entire article.
farmerkat- after this many weeks of forgetting, I may need to tie it on today, forgetting (of course) by Saturday, what it’s for.
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve just set an alarm on my phone.
Hey Kevin, No I didn’t know about the protests because we don’t have a radio station! YET! And Maron should be in the line up. I just hope the shifting start time thing doesn’t keep them from putting it in the line up. I guess they would have to play it delayed.
Thanks FK for the new link :peace:
Help get Marc on the air in Phoenix!
On March 1, 2006 our Air America Phoenix station was taken off the air by a Religious Broadcasting company. This was a “dark” day for progressive talk radio in America. You have flooded us with emails pleading to get us back on the radio and asking how you can help. We have heard your cries. Our goal is to be back on the air on April 3rd, 2006!
A deal has been negotiated with a local station and the final details are being ironed out! Our Freedom Express is running on schedule thanks to your generous support. But the battle is not yet over. We still need your strong support in the next few weeks to make our dream come true. It is very important to get as many people as possible involved at this critical juncture.
http://www.saveairamericaphoenix.com/
I talked to Jeff Farias, producer from KXXT AAR Phoenix, and asked if they would be carrying The Marc Maron Show and he said that yes they would be carrying the whole AAR line up. If you would like to donate $5, $10, $20 or whatever to get Marc onto the Phoenix airwaves, please make a note on your contribution that you want it pooled with other Seditionist donations. I am not sure if it’s possible to make a note like that with paypal so send it snail mail for now. The pool of contributions will go to purchasing pixels on this site and I’m hoping to have a Marc Maron Show logo to use for it.
Ah, the dangers of tieing a string on the finger….
congratulations kristapea!
Re: New Phoenix Station
I guess Ed Schultz is eating crow!!
Also, today I am going to stop by the address that is listed for snailmail contribitions and make sure that Seditionist donations get pooled. They still need to collect money to cover the loans they took out to get back on the air.
I hope Ed Schultz won’t be clogging up the day but he also does well here in Phx. What was it he said about the effort?
I think Ed felt that the market should determine whether a radio station is on the air, not the lowly populace. He was against the save aar phoenix effort. I heard tell that Malloy tore him a new one after he made those comments. Called him either a republican or a fake democrat.
Adam Carolla!:omg:
Let the market decide! Was Schultz upset by the community effort to communistically buy a radio station? A community not necessarily controlled by the elitist Democrat Party?
I have such a democratic view of this “guest worker” thing, or maybe IM a bit too socialist towards corporations…but if we are to allow workers from another country to come here and work cheaper than American workers, there should be a penalty to the corporations, just like there should be a penalty for outsourced jobs. If you take a job that pays $25 an hour out of the country and save something like $20 per hour once you count in benefits etc…and then get a tax break…well, why not tax those jobs $10 per hour more and put that money into a fund to retrain Americans or just to help support all of the unemployed Americans…
We cant, as Americans, allow a workforce that is displacing Americans, but we are unofficially…and this benefits the companies, not the workers….around here the immigrants get picked up on the streets and taken to big estates to work hard in the tick infested outdoors, at them mercy of whoever’s truck they got on. They rent a cot in apartments where people rotate on bunks just to sleep…and they send most of their money home to their families. There is alot of unhappiness and loneliness in that life and people get sick and hurt and rely on the hospital clinic…their kids then are born here and they go to the public school.
These are people who want a better life and they work hard…In rich areas there are very few local American people still around who want to do the work…and the people get used to wanting to pay less because the few legal American companies charge as much as $40/hr per guy for lawn work! Only around $10-11/hr of that goes to the workers who are legal…you could imagine whats happening to the immigrants.
These people would pay taxes and they work hard and they are here anyway….so, perhaps we have to give amnesty to those who are here, and criminalize thr Americans who hire illegal aliens….and insure somehow that all workers are paid a decent living wage.
Since our minimum wage is so low….I dont know…it seems like no one can live on that anyway.
Just thinking outloud here….
Maybe making it easier for contractors to sponser immigrants as long as they have a certain amount of citizens on the payroll
Its a problem, but I am pretty concerned with, not only the working poor Americans, but also the illegals who are all over ther place here and have little recourse.
There was just a big case here where 2 illegals sued a contractor for $3000 in back wages and won. It was done in a way so that they wouldnt get in trouble or deported.
This Republican thing is just a plain old corporate giveaway. A guestworker program with a different classification would somehow allow an army of low wage workers who have no power to sweep into America.
What are these people gonna do with all the Americans who are out of work?
Many, many legal immigrants here dont speak english well (such as my Haitian friends) and have run out of unemployment and there are NO jobs…I was talking to a Mom last night with 3 kids and a pile of bills who is out of unemployment, has no money, and cant would take any job… but unnless you have a car around here you cant get to the jobs, and the bus service is so bad…its just horrible. Unless there is a man who can go out and get on a truck and work (and there is also a problem between black and hispanic workers in the worker pick up area) then, what can you do? The kids can stay at the afterschool program until 6, and go to school at 7:30 and be fed breakfast and lunch…but what happens when one of them gets sick?
Its only human to strive for a better place and people ahve always migrated. I dont think that building a wall will work…I think that the root of this thing is in regulation of corporations and small businesses and a higher minimum wage all around. …and legal recourse easily available without worry of being deported or put in one of those shiny new camps that they just built.
Schultz sucks…its not a free market by any stretch…its run by corporate interests…
Lets bring fairness back to the airwaves and to politics!!
Free market is a con. Free enterprise is the freedom for the sharks to rob the decent people.
Capitalism is organized crime.:omg:
Well, unregulated capitalism obviously doesnt work…apparently, you cant rely on the “goodness” of people…or maybe that was the con to distract us while the corporations were removing the money from the system.
it seems to me if there is a way to provide a guest worker program, that would help. The corps could pay a part of it. But here is one of the biggest problems: corporations and agribusiness may prefer the illegal basis as they do not have to pay prevailing wages, benefits, workman’s comp, vacation…
legalizing drugs and illegal immigration

Kristapea, thanks for the links. Hope this works out. 😮
there’s a whole group of people who are legally here, but can not legally work in the US.

many work under the table…is this who they are going after, too?
The capitalists only want regulations for the working classes.. Watch what happens when you try to regulate them. We need a comprehensive, further reaching new deal–as a first step.
Capitalism is organized crime.:omg:
FK, I don’t know. I’m sorry to say that I haven’t been paying attention to this issue. It’s time for me to catch up
Foreign workers..I am one. Treat us nicely. We don’t want to be a bother.
Return the SW to Mexico–or open the borders to job-seeking refugees.
Why the hell would Ed schultz not encourage getting AAR back on the air in Phoenix where HE was on 1-4 pm? What IS going on here?
What is Sociaal Democracy?
Schultz may think that the new owners will not pick up his show. Are the Arizona AAR activists ClearChannel?
Social Democracy- people vote on the cocktails and appetizers?
No. That’s socialism.:omg:
I though socialism was where people HAD to share cocktails and appetizers.
:fist:Out in the Streets!:omg:
KP, maybe Ed won’t be in the new lineup for AAR in Phoenix 😉
:yinyang: so its not?
:rofl2:
Thanks isi, I needed that.
Well, the new owners will be less likely to pick up his show with THAT attitude. These people trying to get AAR back on the air are some of the former staff of KXXT. I don’t think they are affiliated with Clear Channel but I am not positive. Check this out. Scroll down to “Well That Sucked!”
Capital is thus the governing power over labour and its products. The capitalist possesses this power, not on account of his personal or human qualities, but inasmuch as he is an owner of capital. His power is the purchasing power of his capital, which nothing can withstand.
You are hilarious.:omg:
KP, thanks for that link. This sorta sounds like DG’s modus operandi doesn’t it??
:fu::fu::fu::fu:
:jason:Scalia!
If Air America comes back to Phoenix, I hope it will be implemented very differently. In the model used, no liberals made decisions, and no liberals made money. The owner was conservative, the GM was a libertarian, and the drive-time talk show host was a libertarian. Liberals were nowhere in the decision-making, and, in fact, donated a great deal of time and effort to the financial enrichment of the conservative owner.
Looks as though some libertarian capitalists were persuaded to sell the largely liberal KXXT to hardcore Christian capitalist dogs. Frre Markets!
:omg:
Vote for the candidates of your choice. But no matter who you vote for, the corporations will remain in charge.

Wow, Aretha Franklin on Martha Stewart!!!!
She just came in, sat down at the shiny grand piano and sang an old english folk song. Just Aretha and the piano. Her voice is indescribable.
Now she’s going to cook with Martha.
I don’t have cable so I’m not completely familiar with the Colbert Report. He pretends to be a conservative? Afraid I can’t give any advice to Robert Greenwald. I did see a clip of Arianna on CR. Seemed like there was a lot of laughing but Colbert kept a very straight face.

:shock:HOLY CRAP! :paranoid:SNAKES ON A PLANE!
Fan Frenzy for ‘Snakes’ Is on a Different Plane
By Borys Kit
reuters
LOS ANGELES (March 23) – As film back-stories go, this one is fairly serpentine. The Samuel L. Jackson thriller “Snakes on a Plane,” which wrapped last September in Vancouver, went back before the cameras this month for five days of additional shooting in Los Angeles.
In this case, it wasn’t the usual reshoot, hastily assembled to fix a nagging story problem. Instead, distributor New Line Cinema decided to create new scenes that would take the movie from PG-13 into R-rated territory.
The second round of filming also came about because of intense and growing fan interest in the movie, which is not scheduled to be released until August 18.
Jackson stars as an FBI agent who has to fight a planeload of snakes unleashed by an assassin bent on killing a witness in protective custody. Sight unseen, the movie has grown from something of a joke into a phenomenon slithering untamed throughout the Internet.
As a movie whose fan base has grown spontaneously and organically, “Snakes” is relatively rare.
Intense fan reaction to movies most often is associated with titles that have established themselves in other media, such as comic book movies or fantasy novels, before making their way to the screen. Or it becomes attached to surprise hits, like the original “Star Wars,” that develop massive cult followings once they are released.
But original movies that develop a big prerelease following are uncommon. Artisan Entertainment pulled off that trick in 1999 with its viral Internet campaign for “The Blair Witch Project,” but that success has not been easily duplicated.
“Snakes,” directed by David R. Ellis from an original script by John Heffernan (with rewrites by four scribes), barely has an official Web site at the moment. But the movie already is the talk of a certain segment of the Net without any real prodding on the part of New Line.
It all started with the provocative and buzzworthy, if also reductive, title. New Line picked up the script after Paramount put it on the backburner in March 2003 — in the wake of September 11, terror-on-a-plane movies had fallen out of favor. And even within New Line, there were skeptics who viewed “Snakes on a Plane” as nothing but a simple programmer with a “stupid title.”
After Jackson came on board, the title was upgraded to the more generic “Pacific Air Flight 121.” The studio said it was a temporary moniker being used for “casting purposes.” Executives were searching for something that was more thriller-like and less campy. According to sources, Jackson’s camp also was in favor of a title change.
“Who wants to be in a movie called ‘Snakes on a Plane’?” asked one talent agent at the time, seeming to echo the studio’s concerns.
But once production began, a funny thing happened. Movie fans began noticing the black sheep of the New Line slate. They seized upon the title and created fan sites, blogs, T-shirts, poems, fiction and songs. The title itself, sometimes abbreviated as “SoaP,” has emerged as Internet-speak for fatalistic sentiments that range from c’est la vie to “s— happens.”
“The title is so clear and so straightforward,” said Brian Finkelstein, a Washington, D.C., native who created the blog http://www.Snakesonablog.com and who hopes to score tickets to the movie’s premiere. “You know exactly what you’re going to get.”
Like Harry Potter, whose first suggestion that he’s got magic on his hands comes when he discovers he can talk to snakes in their language, New Line got the message. Deciding that so many anonymous fans couldn’t be wrong, the studio decided to revert to the movie’s original title.
Jackson publicly endorsed the move. “That’s the only reason I took the job: I read the title,” Jackson told entertainment site http://www.Collider.com. He added, “You either want to see that, or you don’t.”
New Line executives, concerned that it is too early to discuss the movie, declined comment. But sources now insist the studio never abandoned the “Snakes” title in the first place and that “Pacific Air” was just an internal working title.
In any event, “Snakes”-ophiles already were hard at work. Chris Rohan of Bethesda, Md., created an elaborate, R-rated audio trailer that lovingly mocks the title and movie. “It’s a genius title,” Rohan said. “It’s so stupid it’s great. It invites satire, but it’s something you just love. It’s something I can’t explain. You either get it or you don’t.”
The audio bit uses a Jackson sound-alike shouting, “I want these mother——- snakes off the mother——- plane!” Soon, the growing legion of fans added their voices as they demanded that that phrase also appear in the movie.
Apparently, the studio got the hint. When Ellis assembled Jackson and others for the recent shoot, the filmmakers added more gore, more death, more nudity, more snakes and more death scenes. And they shot a scene where Jackson does utter the line that fans have demanded.
Those involved with the film said the reshoots weren’t prompted by fans but rather by the existing footage that already was a hairline into R territory. Within the studio, the thinking was, “We’re already going to get an R, why not go all the way?” But the filmmakers do concede that the Jackson line will be in the movie for the sake of the fans.
do they have snakes on the menu?
DID YOU HEAR THE WOLFMAN BIT?
i didn’t know that
no, got a damn phone call I had to take so missed it. Thinking I’ll need to download it if they don’t post it.

was in a target today and thought i’d see if they had the dixie chick’s new cd to consider it. they didn’t have it; might not carry it the clerk told me, because, [insert thick southern uneducated accent] there’s a song on it that, you know, *wink wink* ain’t so good…. I told her I’d heard the song in question and it is fine for any regular person. However, if you’re a member of the christo-fascist zombie brigade, then you might have trouble with it. By the look on her face, you’d think I was a vampire and had bit the woman. It just flew out of me, though, couldn’t be helped. Do you think places won’t carry the cd:?:
ok here as an apology for the long snake crap some colbert!
you said christo fascist zombie brigade to the store lady?
:bow:you are my new hero!
yeah, well, it did cross my mind that I may find a burning cross on my front lawn sometime soon.
i figured target would! but uh now i dont know?
they know where you live? :paranoid: you better get a gun!

living in Jorja, in 2000 i wanted a bumper sticker that said,
Gun owner for Gore
ok, think the chicks cd has NOT yet been released.. duh.
now, i got a gun because I worked up in a court house with one security officer for three buildings, 6 judges and where the militia was very strong. took the safety courses, have the licenses, etc. It was a matter of self-defense and I thought long and hard about it. Read Armed & Female by Paxton Quigly, did a bunch of hard thinking before the purchase.
imagine if mike was in your neighborhood too i bet they would all move out then!

Really? First I’ve heard of it, and I freaking LIVE here. I’ll have to check it out to see what’s going on. The Fleshtones live should be killer if they’re still anything like they were back in the day.
Thanks, Nicki!

FK, I don’t think it’s been released yet, which would explain why you haven’t been able to find it. Let me do some investigative journalism to see if I can come up with the release date.
I’m not a huge Chicks fan (I like some of their stuff, but apparently not enough to buy any of their CDs), but I’m also interested in how the new one does in the wake of that shitstorm a few years ago.
According to the Dixie Chicks’ website, the new CD will be released May 23.:alc:
That is so friggin funny!! I’m certain now you’re going to do just fine in surgery. The planet needs you around!!

This god that wants her in the Senate… this is the same one that advises the Chimp, right?

Sean, thanks for the info on the Snakes On A Plane film. I read a little bit on Atrios a while back but didn’t know the whole scoop. Now, I’m up on the latest 😎
:shock:what i didnt think it was really all over the internet i never ever saw a single thing about it till today!

Rove singing like a bird?
comedy shows are the best source of news:rofl2:
In Annapolis, (Capital of) Maryland, at a hearing on the proposed Constitutional Amendment to prohibit gay marriage, Jamie Raskin, professor of law at AU, was requested to testify and he did so.
At the conclusion of his testimony, a right-wing senator rose to say, “Mr. Raskin, my Bible says that marriage shall occur only between a man and a woman. What do you have to say about that?”
Raskin: “Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.”
The room erupted into applause.
I hope that all of those bastards go down: Cheney and Rove and more. Cleaning of house. What is disturbing is that, unlike in the Watergate era, no reform legislation is likely to follow. Perhaps the corporate masters have put out the word that they do not want the tranquility of the society to be upset.

So look, Arbitron New York ratings are out and results are ….ehh, sorry to say.
Nov ’05 through Jan ’06 ratings held Fall ’05 level of 1.4…but month-later window of Dec ’05 – Feb ’06 down to 1.2. By comparison, WOR was stagnant trending down from 2.2 to 2.1, and WABC was actually trending up for the latest period, 3.4 to 3.7.Possibly WABC benefited from some sports special event? Can’t say for sure.
BUT, without turning into a hate machine against management…
1. Maron left in the period
2. Malloy left in the period
3. Satellite Sisters arrived in the period
Leaving aside Mark Riley and Rachel, whom we love and adore, and want to keep on the air, I must say…the Satellite Sisters move is really TERRIBLE for the station.
If the mission is to change hearts and minds and inform, with so much at stake in our country, letting Satellite Sisters buy time when they don’t give any meaningful informative progressive content, I consider this WORSE than a waste of time, because it stops Malloy from being heard in New York. Satellite Sisters often take right-wing positions as givens in their light talk format, and I think this is so counterproductive to the mission of AAR and WLIB. Someone could be informed or converted by Malloy instead of tuning Satellite Sisters out or being party to their often conservative viewpoints.
ha now i crawled out from under a building right behind a guy and shot him in the head with a tranq gun ha take that!
Be careful how you line up on the Immigration Issue. From what George Will said–as played on Randi Rhodes–I agree with the Republican rhetoric. I have no problem with people who come here to avoid poverty in Mexico. I know many of them. I would do the same if I were in their shoes.
The Solution: Create a comprehensive New Deal. Go far beyond having a political/economic system that mainly looks out for the needs of business. Real Social Democracy. You will be fighting little bandaid battles until the end, otherwise.
The Satellite decision was for the money, we are told. It transcends ratings. Satellite Sister Keynesianism.

The Historic Immigration March in LA
We Didn’t Cross the Border, the Border Crossed Us
By DAVEY D.
Don’t believe the hype I was in downtown Los Angeles on Saturday when the historic march to protest the racist anti-immigration bill HR 4437 took place. For those who don’t know, this bill would make illegal immigrants felons as well as anybody, including family members who help them in any sort of way.
This means that if you have a cousin living in Mexico who comes over here and his paper work ain’t right, even if you didn’t know, you could face jail time. This means if you unknowingly hire somebody to haul away trash you could be in trouble. This is not about giving the government the power to build a wall at the border. This is much deeper then that..
As for the march, the mainstream news media claim there were 500 thousand people on who showed up. Keep in mind, this is after they tried to hate on the march and say only a few thousand were going to show up the night before. Trust me more than a million people showed up Anyone who was there could attest to that. . .

The Democrats’ Daddy Warbucks
By JOSHUA FRANK
Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s husband, Richard Blum, could well be called the Democrats’ Daddy Warbucks. He’s scored bundles from war contracts. He has recently purchased a $16.5 million crib in San Francisco and along with his wife has handed hundreds of thousands of dollars over to fellow Democrats. Since the 2000 election cycle, Blum has contributed over $75,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Committee, and thousands more to individual Democrats, including John Kerry, Robert Byrd, Joe Lieberman, Ted Kennedy, and Barbara Boxer. . .

The Shooting of Little Akaber
Are We Done Killing Children, Yet?
By GIDEON LEVY
A bullet in the head from a distance of a few meters, fired suddenly and without warning shots aimed at the wheels, which the Israel Defense Forces claims there were. This is the way undercover soldiers from the Border Police killed Akaber Zaid, an eight-and-a-half year-old, who was on her way to the doctor, according to her uncle, who was with her and was also wounded.
Little Akaber was going to the doctor and he did indeed see her, but there was no longer a reason for him to do so. She had been on the way to have him remove stitches from her chin, but instead arrived dead at the same doctor’s office, with her head smashed and her skull gaping. . .

Sending mentally ill soldiers back to Iraq:
Reckless disregard for soldiers’ welfare and for Iraqi lives
by Stephen Soldz; March 26, 2006
As the US military has difficulties recruiting and retaining soldiers for its never-ending war of occupation in Iraq, the armed services are resorting to increasingly desperate means of coping. The Stop-Loss option in soldiers’ contracts has allowed soldiers to be kept in uniform months or years after their term of service has expired. The National Guard has been sent overseas to a previously unprecedented extent. And military standards have been lowered, so that drug or alcohol abuse, pregnancy, and poor fitness no longer necessarily lead to dismissal of new recruits.
Now word comes that “mentally ill” troops are being sent back to Iraq. [See: Some troops headed back to Iraq are mentally ill] This article refers to “a little-discussed truth fraught with implications,” but the implications discussed all have to do with the effects on the soldiers being returned, and these soldiers’ “effectiveness in combat.” In many instances, being returned to combat, and to a state of constant tension, will exacerbate the soldiers’ problems, the article — correctly — suggests.
The article indicates that the military is putting pressure on mental health professionals treating these soldiers to minimize the extent of their problems and to declare them fit for return to Iraq and combat. For example, some Army doctors are reporting that they are being told to diagnose combat-stress reaction instead of the more serious post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)…

“… Scalia gave the “fuck you” to reporters in church right after taking communion.”
via atrios and americablog
http://americablog.blogspot.com/2006/03/scalia-just-gave-finger-in-church.html
People are often unaware that a sentence, having had its hour of glory on the wall in the Latin Quarter, May, ’68, sprang, despite its paraphrasing in the spirit of the time, from the famous Testament. On a wall of the Sorbonne a graffiti announced: When the last social philosopher is strangled by the intestines of the last bureaucrat, will we still have problems? This young man painting on the wall knew Meslier in recalling the proposal of a man of the people who wished that “all the great ones of the earth and all the nobles might be hanged and strangled with the intestines of the last priest . . .” The young man who wrote his curses borrows it, surely, and signs his agreement with the priest.
:rofl2::nixon:
I. Of a Certain Jean Meslier
HOW ASTONISHING that the prevailing historiography finds no place for an atheist priest in the reign of Louis XIV. More than that, he was a revolutionary communist and internationalist, an avowed materialist, a convinced hedonist, an authentically passionate and vindictively, anti-Christian prophet, but also, and above all, a philosopher in every sense of the word, a philosopher proposing a vision of the world that is coherent, articulated, and defended step by step before the tribunal of the world, without any obligation to conventional Western reasoning.
Jean Meslier under his cassock contained all the dynamite at the core of the 18th century. This priest with no reputation and without any memorial furnishes an ideological arsenal of the thought of the Enlightenment’s radical faction, that of the ultras, all of whom, drinking from his fountain, innocently pretend to be ignorant of his very name. A number of his theses earn for his borrowers a reputation only won by usurping his work. Suppressed references prevent the reverence due to him.
His work? Just a single book, but what a book! A monster of more than a thousand manuscript pages, written with a goose quill pen under the glimmer of the fireplace and candles in an Ardennes vicarage between the so-called Great Century and the one following, called the Enlightenment, which he endorsed, by frequent use of the word, the sealed fate of the 18th century. A handwritten book, never published during the lifetime of its author, probably read by no one other than by its conceiver. A book put out of shape, pillaged, travestied, mutilated after his death. A doomed book of a doomed author; a brilliant book by a brilliant thinker….

Beautiful!

So, I missed the big protest here:rant1: I only heard about it when I heard the traffic report. But, apparently they expected maybe 3000 people or so and it ended up that 20,000 showed up! So the organizers are being fined for not having the right permits:jerk:
BULLSHIT!
WHATEVER LAW THEY ARE USING TO FINE THEM IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL!
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Yeah, I gotta find out more about it and I will come Monday when we have AAR on at 1480 AM!
having a law that fines you for the size of your group is a law abridging the right of the people to peaceably assemble!
:banana:1480 AM
Ha! So check this out. I went to the address I have posted for the snailmail address where contributions to get AAR Phoenix back on the air are sent. I thought it would be an office building but it was a mail service place. So I wrote a quick note and put my contribution in an envelope and gave it to the lady and as I was leaving Dr. Mike Newcomb, one of the organizers and talk show host, was there picking up the mail! So I gave it to him personally but he was on the phone so I didn’t have a chance to talk.
hey i wonder how far 1480’s broadcast range will be! kxxt had a signal that i could here from like 80 miles away!

Mr. K is on his waaaaaaaaay!!!!
How’re you feeling, CK?
Well, hubby just brought home the big guns: Robitussin with codeine. So maybe I’ll get some real sleep for a change. I’m definitely better, but I developed an ulceration in my throat (this happens to me with strep) that is healing much slower than I remember in the past. So . . . all that chili I cooked up and froze? Can’t eat it. Nice vitamin C-laden fruits and juices? Uh-uh. But enough about me–well, sort of.
Otis had another excellent trip to the vet today, and his blood chemistry looks great. (The RBC will be back tomorrow.) He got the okay to go past the main floor, and I thought he’d be thrilled. He followed me upstairs, cried to be put on the bed, and then growled every time I tried to pet him. (I even changed the bedding first so it wouldn’t be saturated with Elwood smells.) This went on for about 45 minutes. He hasn’t purred since yesterday. I’m really surprised. Up until last night he’d seemed thrilled to be “back” (as his old self), posing regally, a veritable purring machine. I thought he might be depressed being confined to one area, but as I said, gaining access didn’t seem to help. 🙁
Okay, I’m all over the place here, maybe tomorrow I’ll backtrack some, but I want to get upstairs and take my druuuuugs.
Night, all.
Thanks for asking, Phoener. (I know it looked like I was replying to your post, but I actually didn’t see it till after I posted my big health update.)
I’m going nitey-bye myself. The dog’s pacing after a last visit to the yard, so I suppose she’s anxious to get me into bed and guard the house.
I’m so glad there’s such a thing as podcasts now, so I don’t have to miss my favorite funny. 10-12 pm pst weeknights. Whose bright idea was that? If I had to stay up to hear Marc & Jim, I may as well just…:doh::doh::doh::doh::doh: … I’d be that wiped out by the time I got to work.
If the anti-immigration law passes, be prepared for a Kossovo-type situation. Perhaps Mars may step in and bomb us.:omg:
What! No Ed Schultz in Phoenix!:omg:
Fleshtones are the Roman Gods (roamin’ gods).
“Nighty-bye”, I like that. I think that’s what’s happening here.
I need some positive reinforcement on this one.
I believe that Ken Mehlman, RNC chair (click to view) looks just like the character Eb, from Green Acres (click to view).
Not that there is anything wrong with that.
Come to think of…he also has the ethics of Mr. Haney and aspires to the honesty of Arnold Ziffel.
Just what I was thinking. Mr. Heney was the prototypical campaign manager, Eb was just an agreeable buffoon.
