Yesterday was a day-long, rather technical workshop in a very hot room packed with computers and sweaty geeks. Not as glamorous as it sounds. You haven’t lived until you’ve spent a day learning how to optimize threads and caching techniques, trust me. They seem to have employed about a million people, all dressed in black Adobe outfits, holding signs I couldn’t read, and checking to make sure you have your badge on, all while smiling and asking how you are and being friendly and shit. It gets annoying pretty quick. The swag so far has been pretty unimpressive – a crappy friggin’ reusable grocery bag that isn’t big enough to actually be of use as a grocery bag, and a water bottle that’s OK, but, who really needs another water bottle? The badge lanyard has a 4-gig flash drive built into it, and the workshop dude yesterday handed out a business card-size 2-gig drive yesterday. OK, I guess, but, like water bottles, not exactly something I really need. This is definitely going on the evaluation (fewer friendly sign holders and better crap next time, please; oh, and let’s crank up the a/c in the labs, fer crissakes). Today is the first official day of the conference, so hopefully the vendors will have some decent shit to hand out.
Chaching? Is that like Joanie likes chaching or the sound of the cash register. You can always tell about the state of an industry and/or the economy by conference swag. Record biz veterans still get misty over the old daze and that high tech heydey swag and party was not too shabby. I cleaned up at a Real conference about ten years ago and then went to a lavish party with Parliament/Funkadelic as entertainment.
BTW, USA wins 3 Nobels in medicine including one at UCSF. How will they blame O’Bama for this? Or will it be research that happened on the Bush watch when they were so huge on science and medical research?
1st Monday in October. Go, Sotomayor! Or do I mean go away, Scalia, Thomas, Roberts and Scalito? We have to lose one of those guys before at least 2012.
The Monday report from the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Here is what I saw and there was nothing that was anything less than great.Tom Morello, John Prine, Lyle Lovett, Marshall Crenshaw, Eliza Gilkyson, Buddy Miller (w/ EmmyLou Harris and Robert Plant)Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women, Billy Joe Shaver, Steve Earle in several incarnations, Cowboy Jack Clement, Hazel Dickens, Booker T and the DBTs, Doc Watson, Allen Toussaint (best in show), Mavis Staples, Todd Snider (I think this group would love this guy), The Knitters, and EmmyLou Harris. I left a little early and could hear Little Feat from my house when I got home.
Yeah, I’m bragging and I am also not going to be able to walk again for about 3 days.
:blues:
Hey, I can’t type for shit even under normal conditions, let alone when I’m running on no sleep.
Too bad the Guilty Women didn’t change their name to the Chipmunks.
I’ll tell ya, though, I never fully appreciated Hulu until I was stuck in a hotel room, wide awake at 4:30 in the morning.
I didn’t know. There is a Chaching program. I don’t know if it’s Oracle.
When that ‘Alvin and the Chipmunks’ movie came out 2 years ago I was in LA and there were ‘Alvin’ billboards all around. I thought that they might be for a new Dave Alvin CD since he is in LA and the use to put up billboards on Sunset for the stroke. I actually ran into Dave Alvin later at a supermarket in Silver Lake and he assured me they were not for him.
Hulu? Is that what the kids are calling it these days?
In past years the festival has coincided with Fleet Week and disgusting (but impressive) fly overs by the Blues Angels. Visualize thousands in Golden Gate Park flipping off the sky. Now Fleet Week is a week later. Sunday morning as I was walking above the Banjo stage a perfect formation of geese flew right over the center of the audience and over the stage. There were hawk sightings as well but it was a minority.
Is Fleet Week a corporate sponsorship?
Is that the bank, or the enema? Oh, I guess Fleet Bank isn’t around anymore, so it must be the enema.
I was in San Fran during Fleet Week about 20 – 25 years ago. Went hiking at Pt. Reyes National Seashore for a few days, and then spent a couple nights in San Francisco before I came back home (didn’t leave my heart there though).
I love Paul Krugman. I call him Mr. Reasonable.
The Politics of Spite
Hey, we are no longer Morning Seditionists, we are What the Fuckers. That’s from Maron hisself.
Here’s a real WTF?
A group of right wingers has decided that the bible has a liberal slant which they aim to do something about. They intend to rewrite the bible to banish that liberal taint.

Sam Seder is about to be on Jeff Farias’ show.
Bill’s mom is dying. I know most of you lurkers aren’t aware of who this is, but she’s an integral part of my life. Last night I went to Mount St Vincent Hospital in West Seattle to probably see her alive for the last time. She could hardly move or talk, and there was “soothing” music on. She kept mumbling for ice, crushed ice, to be spooned to her.
Toussaint has to be one of the most classy musicians ever.
I think he was on Harry Shearer’s Le Show as well, but I listened to this interview by Michael Shelley on WFMU ealier this year.

Boz Scaggs did Hercules during the show I saw recently.
I am very sorry, Travis. I hope her final days go comfortably.
🙁
I had to make the hard choice between Boz and Dave Alvin but I felt I had to see Dave because one of the Guilty Women, Amy Farris, passed away a week before. It was a choice I should not have had to make. It was great to see a great group rally in the face of such a loss. It was sad because he started playing with this band a year ago after losing one of his best friends and former band mates, Chris Gaffney.
🙁 :gate:
Vernon, Did you catch Steve Martin? The new song he wrote about the kid being late for school is so retro in style and feeling that it should have a Norman Rockwell painting attached to it.
I guess a couple of Martins are on Letterman tonight (Steve and Short).
Sorry to hear about Bill’s mom, Travis. It sucks.
Sorry about your friend’s mom, Travis.
Hang in there Trav.
:gate:
So sorry, Trav. 😥 It’s very difficult to witness someone you care about leaving this life … especially in a hospital. Make sure the nurses keep her comfortable.
Death is a transition we all eventually have to make, hopefully with those we love around us. So, hang in there & be there for her & for Bill.
:yinyang:
Steve Martin also at the same time at Boz and Dave. That really sucked. I did see his wife hanging with Amy Tan the day before at John Prine and Lyle Lovett.
I do love that song, ‘Hercules’. I first heard it from Boz but got back to the Aaron Neville version. Boz also did AT’s ‘Freedom for the Stallion’. Allen did not do either yesterday. I think he may have played them at JazzFest. BTW, I think Allen played at the G20 reception week before last in Pittsburgh the night before O’Bama arrived. I really tried to get ‘Yes We Can Can’ hooked up during the campaign but I guess it never happened.
More Oakland greatness I’m pretty sure I have posted before.
Steve with the Steep Canyon Rangers on Letterman
With more Letterman confessionals I hear
Thank you. :peace:
I’m mistaken. The place isn’t a hospital, it’s more of a “long-term care facility.”
:gate: Thinking of you, Trav, your friend and his mom. How lovely to have soothing music during that time- something I never thought of before. Hang in there.
Think I’d rather attend Vern’s “conference” than pj’s. Of course, the one I’m headed to in a couple weeks gives almost no swag – a bag and that’s it. The content, however, more than makes up for it.

Oh and re the new SCOTUS term et al, I’d vote for impeaching a few of those dudes mentioned…….
