So, what’s up with Alberto this morning – I haven’t had a chance to check. If you’re anyhwere near the path, stay safe. So what’s up with the Daily Show this week? Freakin’ Tom Friedman last night (like he hasn’t been on teevee enough), tonight it’s Ken “I’m not gay” Mehlman, and tomorrow it’s Mr Potatohead, Timmuh Russert. These people have all been on before, and I see no reason to have them on again, personally. Oh well, time to get up and get in the shower before all the other kids get up. 53 to go.

The rain is on the leading edge of the storm. They expect it to come ashore about noon time
The Doppler image of Kat’s neighborhood seems to indicate rotation that may be the radar doing that.
The rise in the crime rate should indicate that a lot of people are in a world of hurt in this “great” economy..People with a job and house surrounded by a white picket fence with their tummy full don’t commit crimes ( unless they are republicans and rethug politicians)
stay safe Kat and Kevin and anyone else who in that area:paranoid:

This is a link to streaming video of the media conference sponsored by the AAR affiliate station in Seattle
“Changing the Media, Changing America,” forum on Saturday, June 10th at the Seattle Town Hall.
This had Maddow, Hartman, Flanders and some other of our not quite far enough to the left talkers.
http://am1090seattle.com/pages/45578.php
Apparently you have to play this on line.. There were some complaints about the quality. Am 1090 in Seattle was going to try and digitize some video that was made of it and post it later this week.
I think if I were Kat I would go visit Krista for the rest of the week. Kevin on the other hand should have beer for at least the next two weeks,
Re: #8
yeah, that sounds like a good idea:knit:
So is Quietgirl out of school for the summer :?::!:
How are things in California ??
Landfall is predicted between Gainsville and Tampa.. Maybe Kevins beer will come in handy after all.
From M$RNC
The storm was expected to blow ashore anywhere from north of Tampa to the Panhandle, with surges of up to 10 feet. Forecasters said it could bring 4 to 10 inches of rain to central Florida and southeastern Georgia. Rain already was falling Monday and at least two tornadoes had formed, but there were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage
ahhhhh!!! no..i’m not out yet:mad: this is my finals week. i guess that’s why i’m coming back to the lovely blog. it usually keeps me from slamming face first into the keyboard and sleeping. it’s 3 am over here:yawn:
my classes this quarter have been at night. so i get home late, work on some stuff till 1 am and crash. then i get up just in time for my classes:fu: haha..i feel out of the loop:smack:
uh, things here in Cali are beautiful, weather wise:banana:
but right now, my grandma is in the hospital and does seem to be getting better. so right now, i’m emotionally drained. Great way to start off the summer, huh?
Finals week Ewwwwww. its only 4:15 here.. Nothing is malfunctioning or needs to be set up so I am :yawn::-(:joe::joe::joe:
that’s the worst. being up so early and not having anything to do…..me, i have plenty to do, but i just want to sleep:growl: ahhh…..:joe: would help…
Landfall update
A severe weather bulletin from an Orlando station:
“Alberto is nearing the big bend of Florida and will make landfall around 9am near Steinhatchee as a minimal hurricane. Tornado watches are out through 8am for all of central Florida.”
Now where in the H* is Steinhatchee ❓ ❗ 🙁
I looked Steinhatchee up on Google maps and I still don’t know where it is.. The east/southeast side if the storm is supposed to be the worst so Kevin may have some wading to do.
Steinhatchee..you are here :paranoid:
Thanks QG for that link. Steinhatchee appears to be a town as apposed to a wide spot on the highway. I feel sorry for the people that live there, hopefully they all left. Its quite a ways north of St Petersburg where Kevin is.
was kevin on the blog yesterday? did he say he was going to leave?
Kevin was here he said he was going to wait it out. He was going to buy a couple of cases of beer on his way home from work.
stay safe Kat and Kevin and anyone else who in that area
Comment by quietgirl — June 13, 2006 @ 5:27 am
Quietgirl!!! :love::love::love:
The rains have subsided for now. Alberto is projected to make landfall well north of us. We should get some feeder bands of rain later today, but that should be the worst of it.
Fred, I agree with your sentiment, but the storm probably isn’t going to turn north enough to mess with Tallahassee. Too bad… I would love to see Jeb drown like the rat he is. 👿
I didn’t get out of work today, by the way. Oh well.
Kevin!!!!:banana::fist:
be careful! and take that beer with you everywhere….that is, if you still have it:alc::40:
Hey Kevin.. Sounds just like private industry..dam the torpedoes full speed ahead.. Usually works ok until the power goes off. Around here you usually then get to drive home along with 300,000 other commuters in 8 inches of wet snow..I don’t think we ever got off due to a tornado watch. They just told us to remember how to do a roll and cover.
SHIT!!!!
Rove got off!
Good morning…another day.
Roll and cover??? that doesn’t actually work, does it? i doubt it. i still remember after the Northridge earthquake, we were told in school to duck under our desks so nothing would fall on us…..uh, if a whole roof or giant air conditioner falls on m, i don’t think a desk is going to help me. that’s like teachers during the 50s telling the kids to duck and cover in cases of a nuclear attack.
hi Melina!!!…..uh…wha?
Well, that sucks. I prefer Jason Leopold’s version better.
….that is, if you still have it
Comment by quietgirl — June 13, 2006 @ 6:54 am
I didn’t buy two cases yesterday, just for the record. Rumors of my drinking are highly exaggerated by those who pass out before I do.
:40::40::40:
Fred, you’re right about private industry. Last time it rained all day, I had the pleasure of walking through 13 inches of water to get out of the building. Yesterday was easier.
I just heard Riley playing the soundbite of Jeb declaring Florida to be a disaster area. Easy for him to say… Florida education has been a disaster ever since he took office and instituted No Voucher Left Behind. It will take years to repair the damage this idiot has done.
But anyway, I still have some beer left if anyone wants to stop down here tonight!
:40:
:crap::crap::crap: Rove got off :crap::crap::crap::fu::fu::mad::eek::yuck::gate::omg::jason:
Times story, if you haven’t seen it.
Tornadoes are more apt to cause breaking glass or take the roof off the building.. You are supposed to go to an interior hall way and sit on the floor against an outside wall and when the lights go off put your head between your legs. if its really bad I guesst you then apply a big kiss to you a*.
Re Sleazy Rove….!@$%*#@!%&!!!!:fu::fu::fu::fu::fustrate::fustrate::growl::growl::mad::mad::jason::spank:
When I was working in Houston in the early 1970’s we had a hurricane come ashore near Corpus Christy. In Houston it got as black as night with these huge thunder storms. About three hours into the work day the building supervisor came on the PA system and told everyone to get on the floor that there was tornado headed directly for the building.. The lights went off and all the papers on the desks got sucked up against the the HVAC outlets in the ceiling. It picked up a huge HVAC unit off the roof and dropped it on a brand new Porsche mid engine in the parking lot. I had a peace of a tree limb that penetrated the vent window in my car. It made a small hole just the size of the twig.. Very strange how tornadoes work.
Then in true American Industry fashion they told us to go out and check our cars for damage and by the time we had done that the lights came back on and we were told to go back to work.
Rove:fustrate::barf:
#33…Fred, the wonders of Karma :rofl2:
The Porsche belonged to one of the management types and it was parked in the next row over from the ten year old ford van they used to run errands and go to the post office.. You would think the tornado would have had better aim.. now I know it had perfect aim.
Good morning, sheeple :sheep:
The prosecutor in the C.I.A. leak case on Monday advised Karl Rove, the senior White House adviser, that he would not be charged with any wrongdoing, effectively ending the nearly three-year criminal investigation that had at times focused intensely on Mr. Rove.
The decision by the prosecutor, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, announced in a letter to Mr. Rove’s lawyer, Robert D. Luskin, lifted a pall that had hung over Mr. Rove who testified on five occasions to a federal grand jury about his involvement in the disclosure of an intelligence officer’s identity.
:::deep sigh::: 🙁
Good morning Susan,, I hope Kat can get in this morning.
yeah, me too…thanks for all the advisories, by the way. Poor GA and FLA. Man, is this going to be another year for big storms again? 😥
hi Susan:nixon:
Well now we need to get Rove, Alito and the bus/piano all together at the same time .. This is getting complicated.:-(
Ned LaMONte has a great radio commercial here…he challenges Lieberman to support him if he wins the primary as he will pledge to support Lieberman if HE wins
Hey Quiet Girl, good to see you :jesus:
Fred, I’m working on one of those mutant tornados to go after them…then of course get them all in one place… well I can dream
Lieberman is an ass but thats good politcs .. I guess.
If I was a democrat I would never support Lieberturkey
Well how about a mutant tornado and a bus .. The more things we use the higher the probability.
aww man…..the coffee not working…:joe::joe:
:yawn::yawn: i’m fading fast
Lieberman is trying to portray Lamont as right-leaning… that’s kind of laughable considering where HE is coming from…
OOh , Ooh the crane has come back..:banana::banana: maybe they are going to get the AC back on :banana::banana: some time today :peace::nixon:
I still think AAR needs to sell a wrist rocket/brick kit on their web site. Extra bricks could be ordered at the same time or could be ordered separately later on. Monogrammed bricks would cost more.
LOL, Fred is making me laugh this morning with his imagery…
Ewwww. :yuck:The urinal in the rest room is running over onto the floor. This particular area is below ground level so that might not be good .. I hope facilities can handle a heat wave and a flood at the same time.:omg:
:crap:Well the facilities hot line isn’t answering its phone.. I’m glad a six inch water main didn’t break. I wonder what you are supposed to do if that happens .:?:. pull the fire alarm ??:rant1:
What Rachel didn’t notice was the guy doing the announcement at the NHC sounded like he was speaking Indian.. as in he was in India…:tinfoil::shock::yuck:
aw man…okay, i’m going to go catch some ZzZzzZzZz
take care you guys, especially Kevin and Kat :peace:
Ok QG we will let ya.. come back soon, Good luck with finals.:banana::tongue:
:omg:Ms always late turned up early today.. obviously trying to atone for yesterday..I will give her a heads up on the flood and let her worry about it  🙁 blog with ya all later..Good luck to Kat and Kevin..
:joe: Gluten Tag :joe:
Just talked to Jeff Farias at KPHX and they want to try and fit Marc’s show in the line up but it’s not available yet. Do we need to start pestering AAR to get their shit together and syndicate the show?! Space is filling up fast. They’ve already put Thom Hartman in the spot after Mike Malloy where they were playing repeats of Al and Randi. TO ARMS SEDITIONISTAS! :fist:
South Central Farm Eviction in Process Now!
Despite weeks of negotiations, getting funding to purchase the land, and really putting their hearts and lives on the line, the farmers and their supporters are being evicted from the South Central Farm right now. A true gem and beautiful example of what cooperation and working together can accomplish is going to be destroyed to build a fucking Walmart warehouse.
Please fax or email city hall ask Mayor Villaraigosa to continue peaceful negotiations for purchase of the 14 acres of farmland in urban South Central LA. The mailbox on the phone is full and no one is answering.

URGENT BREAKING NEWS
SOUTH CENTRAL FARMERS EVICTION HAPPENING NOW
5 A.M. SQUADRON OF HELICOPTERS & SQUAD CARS CAME TO EVICT FARMERS & PEACEFUL SUPPORTERS
WHEN: Tuesday June 13, NOW
WHAT: Eviction of South Central Farmers and Supporters
Darryl Hannah and John Quigley still inside the property, other peaceful protestors conducting nonviolent civil disobedience.
WHERE: South Central Farm
4000 S. Long Beach Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90058
(Media enter on 40th Pl. through Long Beach Ave. Park on 41st )
WHY:
For over three weeks supporters have been onsite at the South Central Farm, the nation’s largest urban farm, which serves as a 14-acre oasis in the middle of L.A.’s concrete jungle. This 14-year-old community gem functions as an active farm for more than 350 families and fills a local need for fresh produce, green space and a safe haven in a poverty-stricken region of Los Angeles. The farmers, community volunteers and celebrity supporters are in a daily state of peril anxiously awaiting the farm’s fate.
“The South Central Farm is a gem in the Los Angeles landscape. It supplies local communities with fresh, organic produce, gives children a safe environment to play and learn in, and provides a successful example of urban sustainability for the rest of the world to follow…”

This is hilarious – Henry Rollins’ “love letter” to Ann Coulter
I looks like Alberto never made hurricane status and has come ashore more or less where they said it would. The weather in Georgia is really improving but there is this huge line of thunderstorms headed directly for Kevin..:omg:
:barf:This Take Back America Conference is the most useless peace of c* that has come down the pike since last years Take Back America Conference. All it is is an energy building affair that will accomplish about as much as a peace rally. Everyone will go home happy and then find they are living in the real world and may have to really do something other than spouting platitudes to take back America. They will all then be depressed once again. 🙁 :yuck::barf::eek::(
Well thunderstorms could be pretty bad sometimes, but glad it never made hurricane…anyway, Kevin said he was stocking up on beverages, so he can toast the thunder Gods like Zeus and pray for him to tread gently (and board up his windows if necessary) 😕
Wow, fearless leader took his codpiece to Iraq. What a hero!
:barf::yuck::crap:The “liberals” over on DU are certainly looking for a scapegoat in the Rove non-indictment fiasco and of course they are pointing fingers at Leopold and Truthout. As with my management they can’t handle a S* happens scenario.. All I can think is they must have had big bets with their bookie. :-(:?::yuck:
:eek:It’s really to bad it takes AQ so long to organize their activities.:omg:

Okay, i’ll keep the day job.
:omg:Jason Leopold, the Truthout.org reporter who asserted May 13 that Karl Rove had been indicted in the CIA leak case, has scheduled an appearance on the nationally syndicated Ed Schultz talk radio show at 3:30 PM ET, RAW STORY can reveal.:gate::omg::jason::fist:
Sometimes people just don’t know when to cry “uncle.” I do. I asked Robert Luskin this morning if Karl Rove has made a deal with Fitzgerald. His response:
There has never, ever been any discussion of a deal in any way, shape or form.
Which is exactly what Luskin told me weeks ago. It’s over, folks. Karl Rove will not be charged with a crime. He’s cooperated with Fitzgerald by testifying to the grand jury five times and providing whatever information he had without a safety net. Without a 5k. Without assurances he would not be indicted. That’s a hell of a risk, but Luskin pulled it off. My hat’s off to Luskin.

Sounds like Karl may have sold someone else farther up the ladder out.:omg:
Al Qaeda Website Posts Bush Alert
A jihadist website has posted an urgent alert that President Bush is in Iraq.
“The cursed Bush is in Iraq,” the website says in Arabic. “By God’s will, he will fall into the trap of the mujaheddin,” the site says.
May a tank shell cut him in two halves. May the sky rain rockets to rid the whole world from the crimes of this pig.”
“God … make his end today by the hands of the lions of al Qaeda.” “God … show us his killing today and make us celebrate his death the same way they celebrated the killing of Zarqawi.”

Pew Poll: U.S. in Iraq Greater Threat Than Iran
WASHINGTON (AP) – The presence of U.S. troops in Iraq is considered a greater threat to Mideast stability than the current government in Iran, according to a new poll of European and Muslim countries. The poll found that people in Britain, France, Germany, Spain and Russia rated the presence of troops in Iraq higher than the government in Iran as a threat, according to polling by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. Views of U.S. troops in Iraq were even more negative in countries like Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey and Pakistan.
America’s image rebounded in some countries last year after the U.S. offered aid to tsunami victims, but those gains have disappeared, the Pew poll found.
The 15-nation poll also found:
_Overall support for the U.S.-led war on terrorism has declined even among close allies.
_Favorable opinions of the United States continue to fall, with sharp declines in Spain, Turkey and India.
_Majorities in 10 of 14 foreign countries _ including Britain _ say the Iraq war has made the world more dangerous.
_Concern about global warming is low in China and United States, the two largest producers of greenhouse gases, while high elsewhere.

As of 3:30 we haven’t seen any more rain yet, knock on Bush’s head. The clouds have lightened up, and the sun even managed to come out once or twice. We’ll probably get some more outer bands tonight, once the storm gets closer to landfall, but it sounds as if most of the heavy stuff will be well north of us.
Susan, thanks for the Rollins link. Very funny stuff. I’m going to see his band in August – they’re double-billed with X.
I saw X about three years ago, and they would have blown the roof off Jannus Landing if only it had a roof. Plus Exene is from St Pete! I don’t remember the last time I danced so much at a show, so I’m really looking forward to this.
:banana::banana::banana:
AQ needs to put a Shultz alert on their web site.
Why do things have to be so black and white.. S* happens.. Sheeeez.:yuck:
Leopold still stands, behind or maybe it’s in his story. He Says Rove got a sealed indictment. So what happened to change that ?? Note that Fitzgerld hasn’t said anything.. do we even know where Fitz is ?? :tinfoil: :barf::yuck:
Uh…Kevin the storm is already about 50 miles inland..The Doppler does show you in the clear for the moment at least. That latest Doppler even shows some rotation.. After it crosses Florida it will have hopefully crapped out but one will have to see.:yuck::-(:40:
The Take Back America conference, an annual event held in Washington DC this year from June 12-14, is supposed to be a venue for prominent progressives to gather and debate the major issues of our day. Their aim is to “provide the nation with new vision, new ideas and new energy.” But choosing New York Senator and probable presidential candidate Hillary Clinton as a keynote speaker and then stifling dissent against her pro-war position hardly seems the stuff of a new vision for America.
The peace group CODEPINK is widely known for bringing its anti-war message to the halls of power, including inside the Republican National Convention and at President Bush’s Inauguration. But it has also targeted Democrats such as Hillary Clinton who support the war. “We have a campaign called Birddog Hillary,” says CODEPINK’s New York coordinator Nancy Kricorian. “We follow her around the entire state asking her to listen to the voices of her constituents and stop her support of Bush’s ‘stay the course’ policy in Iraq. So far, she hasn’t been listening.”
Fearing that CODEPINK would openly confront Clinton on her pro-war policy, the organizers of Take Back America entered into negotiations with CODEPINK a few days before the conference. “We had lengthy discussions where they pleaded with us not to protest during her keynote breakfast address,” explained Gael Murphy, one of the cofounders of CODEPINK. “Instead, we were told that we could distribute flyers explaining Hillary’s pro-war position to the crowd inside and outside the hotel, and we would be called on to ask her the first question after the speech. We agreed.”
However, when CODEPINK showed up on Tuesday morning in advance of Clinton’s speech, the security guards refused to allow them to pass out flyers, even outside the hotel. “Take Back America violated the agreement from the moment we arrived,” said Ms. Murphy. “Even though we had a table inside the conference, burly security guards blocked us and informed us that it was a private event, that we were not welcome, and they escorted us out of the building. We telephoned the conference staff who then told us that we couldn’t enter the hotel, couldn’t leaflet the event, the hallways-anywhere. They went back on their word and tried to quash even peaceful, respectful dissent.”
MEDEA BENJAMIN
Great the demodorps are now acting like rethugs .. A sign of things to come.?? Hillary should be fired.
The neoconservatives could not care less about public opinion. Neocons are contemptuous of the American people. Leo Strauss taught neocons that it was their duty to deceive the clueless American people in order to implement their agenda of global domination. The neocons believe that they have a perfect right, even the obligation, to manipulate the public through propaganda and black ops in order to create acceptance and support for their wars of aggression.
The neocons are the epitome of evil, and they have succumbed to hubris. Like Hitler when he attacked the Soviet Union, neocons believe that their manipulative skills and use of military power will carry the day for their agenda. Hitler’s hubris doomed Germany to destruction. What price will America pay for neocon hubris?
When the neocon nazis nuke Iran it will revive memories in Japan and break the US-Japanese alliance. Japan owns enough US Treasury bonds to be able to destroy both the US dollar and the market for Washington’s endless red ink. Russia, China, India, and even our European lackeys will have it forcefully brought home to them that the US is an out-of-control rogue nation. They will unify against us. Most likely our bought and paid for puppets in the MIddle East will fall, and Islamic leaders will gain Pakistan’s nuclear weapons. Al Qaeda will gain tens of millions of recruits.
PAUL CRAIG ROBERTS
Now Medea might understand how Nader and his supporters felt during the 2004 presidential campaign. Democrats use the same tactics as the Republicans do. (Although I don’t believe they have the capacity to rig elections the way the Republicans do now.)
.
And we will gain a lot of piecewise continuous Republicans whether they really supported the neocons or not. They didn’t get rid of then so sorry they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.
ugh i hate janus landing!!!!! shitty shitty place! i mean great for shows and all but uhhhhh horrible to get the truck in there stupid ass tree branch in the way! although it is nice that there is a movie theater a couple of blocks away!
Revolution
By the word revolution many people mean gigantic social conflagration. They have in mind a moment in time, or a brief span. They may have in mind violence. I mean by the word revolution, instead, a change in defining institutions in either of four key spheres of social life: economy, polity, culture, or gender/kinship.
Since revolution as I define it changes defining institutions it both opposes past ways and constructs new ways. What I mean be the term revolution includes opposition, organizing, abolition, and creation.
A revolution could have a cataclysmic moment or a cataclysmic period, but cataclysm isn’t in my definition. Cataclysm is not required. There could be violence in a revolution and there certainly would be struggle. But for me these are aspects, not the defining feature.
Revolutionary change could be for the better, I should add, as some people probably take for granted, but reducing oppression or enhancing liberation isn’t in my definition, either. Benefit is not required. What is required for a social process to be a revolution, at least as I define the word, is that centrally defining institutional structures in one of four critical spheres of social life fundamentally alter.
This usage is a bit idiosyncratic, I know. I also know that to make it precise I would have to clarify what I mean by all the involved concepts. But short of that, obviously this definition avoids prioritizing one sphere of life over all others. Revolution isn’t only economics, or only politics, or only culture, or only kinship. Revolution can be about any one, or all of these spheres of social life. This definition also obviously avoids fetishizing one method of change over all others.
MICHAEL ALBERT
WOW Nicki you posted some keeno neeto articles today..:lol::omg:
When I worked for the FRA we were doing some slack action dynamics tests and the Santafe had a wreck between where we were staging and where we were testing so they put this 40 car freight with two sets of six locomotives and the FRA test car over this branch line to get around the wreck, I don’t think they had used the branch in the ten years since the grain elevator it served closed and there were trees growing up through the track in places. The train crew just stopped and got out the chain saw and on we went. Seemed like they did that quite often. By the time we got about 10 miles there were people at the grade crossings taking pictures.
😯 so hillary said today that she screams at her tv and since she now has tivo she rewinds and screams at it again so who do you think she rewinds democrats or republicans?
:omg:i think its mostly democrats!
Hillary is full of BS :-(:barf: Maybe she was watching herself and got confused.

MedioCORE has extreme respect for any band that doesn’t just go with fads and trends. Anyone who tries to find their own sound, doesn’t want to end up on MTV. The band found all this on a video tape that showed up anonymously in a large manilla folder one glorious, glorious day.
Tomorrow.. tomorrow that’s what facilities has been saying for the last five days. At least the cooling tower is back together but its like South Texas up here in this office space. :40::40::omg: The flood wasn’t biblical in nature but facilities turned off the water until they fix that.. I was thinking 💡 that it was fortunate that most of the people who work the first shift down there are women but it might have been that they turned the water off to both restrooms :omg:. The manufacturing people can get quite belligerent when they get stressed out.
The DOW went down the :crap:er again today
DOW 10,706.14 -86.44
The loses since it stated down must be at least 700 points by now.
The office of the special counsel investigating charges relating to the leaked identity of undercover CIA operative Valerie Plame has declined to comment on whether or not Karl Rove has been informed that he will not be indicted.
The Public Information Officer for the US Attorney’s office in Chicago, as such spokesperson for the office of Special Prosecutor Fitzgerald, quickly returned RAW STORY’s calls for comment–but had none to offer.

:tinfoil: Sounds like something is going on. Maybe they had none to offer because Fitz was sent to GTMO on a special mission …:eek:
you say you want a revolution, yeahh… :alc:
It may be just me but revolutions only seem to be in vogue after about the forth beer.:40::omg::eek::yuck:

An accessible collection of original interviews with the left’s best intellectuals and activists.
actually revolution was not only in vogue but IMMINENT after the kindergartener I had to deal with this afternoon…only the fact that I was tired stopped me
hmm, that does sound like good reading…
We’re talking about the Tracy Chapman song. We’re not talking about the lame, opportunistic song called Revolution that only calls for compromise–at best. The one that has the line “You say you want a revolution” in it. That song is a big copout.
ooo, looks like somebody’s been doing some interesting writing …
I think the 60’s were somewhat of a revolution…
Culturaly, yes. But the political structures have remained intact. Nixon was popular. Con artist Reagan! Bushco! Sociopathic Clinton! The United States needs a political and social rrevolution. Real democracy! Do we have a long way to go?
Hillary in ’08!:omg:
True, it was a social revolution and all the conservative stuff that came after was mostly in reaction to what happened then. If we had changed the actual system, the idiots could not have reacted in the way they did :fu:.
Most of what happened in the 60’s was under Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon.. Thinking back it is almost impossible to believe we got the great society, to the moon and the EPA under those guys.. Jimmy Carter got to try to pay for it though.
poor Jimmy..:( .the conservatives really think he’s Satan…(or if Clinton is Satan, Jimmy Carter is his assistant in hell)
Hartmann is right to hammer Whacko Reagan for going after great society programs. How did such a freak get elected in the first place? In my younger days, I thought that Reagan’s election in 1980 was the beginning of the American Nazi era.
Carter was no saint. Some of his policies created space for the Reagan Revolution to exploit. Carter was not as bad as Clinton, though. And he is a great statesman, now.
it was the Yuppies, for the most part (in my opinion). They liked what he represented. They hated the hippies and they wanted to be rich and worship the corporate dream. I know a lot of people like that.
no, Carter wasn’t perfect, but he wasn’t the demon they made him out to be. He really did want peace and worked toward it, even if he erred. Big difference from the Neocon dream.
Yes, that creep Reagan did build a grand coalition. That is scary. I do think that we have advanced, though. Bush had to rely on massive voter fraud to win two presidential elections. I imagine that if Reagan were running in 2000, he would need to do the same.
The media was behind Reagan getting into office. Find NewsWeek articles in 1978, and so forth. The establishment wanted someone to cool things down. More later. (TriLateral Commission knew Reagan was an asshole; they liked the fact that he was cooling out the masses, though.)
I think Reagan aka RayGun was a straw man to see how much the thugs could manipulate the media. Reagan was a well known name but did a really poor job in Calif as governor but like Bush you never heard about that. It wasn’t until the 90’s that books about IRAN Contra came out and you saw the way Carter got framed for the Tehran hostage situation. The media never presented that information that I can remember. I remember being really frustrated with Carter over what he didn’t do with those hostages and really pissed off at Reagan for letting those marines get blown up in Lebanon. If the media had said a bit more about why that was it would have made a lot of difference. Trying to overcome thirty years of Reich wing propaganda in just three with AAR is a really up hill battle especially now that everyone would rather watch things like American idol than watch the news.
The media probably was largely behind it, but also the fact that he was trouble bringing the American hostages home contributed to the “Carter is weak” meme. Bad timing. Reagan, however, was a dirtbag.
well I don’t remember much about the media/politics back then, but I do remember that’s around the time my dad started going conservative (and Carter was one of the people he cursed out, along with New York City mayors) My dad did repent before the end, though
Hey Sean, Glenn Greenwald is gonna be at Drinking Liberally tomorrow night to talk about his book (Mark & Orlando’s, 2020 P St NW if anybody’s in the area). It’s only a few metro stops from where I work – and on the red line – same one I live on. So, it’s a lot easier to knock back a few and get home than to get up to Maryland (even sober, it’s a pain in the ass up that way).
Going into the late 70’s the US had never been in debt by that much before .. The 11 years of Vietnam and the first corporate welfare program called the space program had put us something like 2 trillion dollars in the hole. At the time it was only legal to sell T-bills to other Americans so Carter printed money to reduce the dept and between that and the war between Israel and Egypt and the resulting oil boycott by the Saudi’s and increased oil prices we had like three years straight of 7% or so inflation. I remember when a CD could get 12% interest. Reagan stopped that by getting congress to allow selling T-bills overseas. of course to do that we had to import more so among other things we allowed the Steel industry to go off shore.. That started the whole down hill spiral.
Yes, I remember the runaway, crazy inflation… that’s all you heard about. And gas lines, and crime. Lots of crime in the cities. People were really depressed The points you made were good. I just wish we could have stopped the trend downward. People were so taken by the fact that there jobs in the 80’s that they ignored all the backward strides we were taking in other areas, like in the social arena.
The space program in the 60’s and the rail research projects I worked on in the early 70’s were attempts to keep the US technologically ahead of the rest of the world especially the great Satan the Soviet Union and to keep the aerospace companies viable. Carter had started several energy programs to switch defense labs over to commerical efforts. The aerospace companies were totally incapable of building reliable railroad equipment and the advanced projects in transportation and energy would cost zillions to build but would reduce our oil dependence to essentially zero so RayGun, I’m sure with the backing of big oil, scrapped the whole transportation project effort along with energy projects in solar, and fusion in the early to mid 1980’s and came up with the Space Shuttle to keep his aerospace friends in business. Now with China coming on line the corportists want to essentially scrap out the US and move to China.. Only government intervention can stop them and look at how far down the tube we have traveled in only six years.
some good insights there, Fred… yeah, China is something else these days
20,000 people for F.U.B.A.R in Portland ?? Were you there Nicki.. ?? That has to bother the right leaning government types.. Did you Have any tanks appear ??
If we had 20,000 liberals appear for anything in Denver KHOW would have a drastic increase in their water bill as all the Reich wing talkers spent lots of time in the rest rooms. So far Denver and the surrounding burbs have had maybe 500 at a peace demonstration..There were about that number that came to see Randi and maybe 70 at the AAR listeners meet up. Franken was just here I don’t know how many he had ..At least 5 I would presume. Who makes up the people who like to be liberal in Portland, the old, middle aged or is it a mix of all ages ?? The several people who call Hartman to advertise the seemingly constant peace vigils seem to be a bit crusty.

Oh, good. I just recorded the Daily Show/Colbert hour on my laptop while I watch this really odd movie on SciFi – “Immortal.” Also copied the season premiere of “The Wire” from my ReplayTV back home, which I’ll have to watch when I get a chance.
hey!
Hey, PJ, my mom just got a Smithsonian Alumni Discount Rate Summary thing in the mail today. Yeah, but, uh, her name is spelled wrong, so will the discounted rate still apply?
ecw wrestling is on sci-fi now! not that wrestling on sci-fi makes any sense but whatever!
Hey Travis, by golly, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say, “yes.” Oh course, the closest I could come to real opinion in anything at this point is if she had a project that involved cost-sharing. I’m damn near an expert on that. What that’s got to do with IT and the web, I’m not sure, but there you go.
Hey, ECW isn’t on ’til ten. Right now it’s “Immortal.”
Hey! Now Al Gore is on Larry Kong on CNN!
Is this enviornment night?
ooooh
Did anyone see this? Isnt this the guy that Marc s pissed at for blowing him off?
and this…very funny!
Larry Kong. I like that. Yep, Jason Leopold. Either he got screwed over by somebody, or he jumped the gun somewhere. Or there’s more to come. My totally uneducated and worth what it costs guess is just that Fitz knows Rove was in on it, wanted to indict him, but just couldn’t quite put together enough to convict – and wasn’t willing to go forward w/o a (forgive the expression) “slamdunk” case.
Well, that was last month, right?….I came across it doing research for a blog entry that Im trying to double check and add links to….maybe Im in the twighlight zone…the month is 6 now, right?…not 5.

Wait, wait. Let’s hurry up and get to August 4th, and then slow down so I don’t have to start classes for a while.
well, its the slow it down part that is harder…but then, classes will go by really quickly….the problem is that it will take the rest of your life with it:holla:
OK…I published…such as it is…
Suz- if your eout there be sure to check my blog to see the bird stuff below the Rove stuff…
Melina, re: your baby jardine…AWWWWWWWW 🙂 🙂 🙂 As for a name, no rush…like you said, wait for her personality to emerge, then it will be easier to choose a name. That face is just so sweet 🙂
my dad is still super pissed at sci-fi for dropping farscape
Hey Farscape was a pretty good show…
hey no we are going to have a long summer well in my time and space hopefully long and short in pj’s time and space thats possible right?
:jason:i’m a blog killer!
ok well im out of here time to go to maryland!
Time moves faster as you get older Seanie…so it will be longer for you. It will be much shorter for us oldsters….even PJ, who it could be a little longer for because hes missing home…missing someone and something slows things a bit.
Mehlman ison with Jon….he is the goffiest guy…and Jon is doing very well with him.
:joe:

:evil:evil kitten!!!!!
The Bronx was first settled by Europeans in 1639 when Jonas Bronck, for whom the area was later named, established a farm along the Harlem River in the area now known as the Mott Haven section. The territory now contained within Bronx County was originally part of Westchester County, an original county of New York State. The present Bronx County was contained in four towns: Westchester, Yonkers, Eastchester, and Pelham. In 1846, a new town, West Farms, was created by secession from Westchester; in turn, in 1855, the town of Morrisania seceded from West Farms. In 1873, the town of Kingsbridge (roughly corresponding to the modern Bronx neighborhoods of Kingsbridge, Riverdale, and Woodlawn) seceded from Yonkers.
Adding to Tuesday’s thread?Huh?
