Well, shit. I gotta go back today. I suppose that’s just as well, since I think my wife is getting sick of me being around all the time – or, at least, the thrill of my being home has pretty much worn off (that took about a day, I think).
My wife has to work, as does junior, and since I’ll have to leave before either of them get back home, I guess it’s one last walk with Siggy (poor guy’s been pretty much glued to me since I’ve been here) before I see how the traffic gods treat me today. I’ve been fairly lucky, so hopefully they won’t try and screw me over on my last trip (for a while, anyway) back to DC (they can screw with me on my final trip back home in a month instead). According to the forecast, I’ll be returning to heavy t-storms, which is more or less how I left.
On the plus side, I have my new GPS toy to play with. I know the route pretty well by now, but hopefully it’ll expand my radius of movement down in the DC/MD/VA region (and it’s already got Canada loaded into it, should emigration look like the only way out – and don’t tell me about their Conservative PM; their Conservatives are better than our Konservatives). It also plays mp3’s, so what the hell.
I have a couple of leftover Marc Maron Shows to listen to, and a week’s worth of Majority Report and Malloy – not to mention a bunch of audio books (I keep falling asleep about one chapter into “The Hammer of God,” which is somewhat appropriate after our recent close encounter). I could always listen to music, too, I guess, but there’s something about the spoken word that keeps you (well, me anyway) from feeling all alone. Long rides by yourself can kinda suck (I remember leaving after a really nice weekend visit with someone and having to drive from Olean, NY back up to Oswego, and Carole King’s “So Far Away” came on the radio and bummed me right the hell out) – especially when you’re heading in the wrong direction – but five or so Maron shows pass the time quite nicely.
So, anyway, youse guys have a good day, and I’ll probably stop by before I head out.

About 2.5 million ballots left out of the initial count narrow the lead Calderon holds over Lopez Obrador to 0.6 percentage point.
By Héctor Tobar and Carlos Martínez, Times Staff Writers
July 5, 2006
MEXICO CITY — The margin between the two leading candidates for president narrowed suddenly Tuesday after election authorities revealed that about 2.5 million votes had been missing from earlier counts. The announcement meant the race between leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and conservative Felipe Calderon was still too close to call.
(snip)
An initial count of the ballots gave a slim but apparently insurmountable lead to Calderon. On Monday evening, Calderon was leading Lopez Obrador by 402,708 votes, with 98.45% of polling stations “processed,” according to official reports.
But election authorities acknowledged Tuesday that the preliminary count did not include vote totals from more than 11,000 stations where “irregularities” were noted in official paperwork. Those stations were listed as “processed” in the official reports, but their votes were not included in the tally.
Late Tuesday, election officials added the 2.5 million votes to the public count. Lopez Obrador outpolled Calderon on these ballots by more than 145,000 votes, narrowing Calderon’s lead to slightly more than 257,000 ballots, or 0.6 percentage point.

From the hunger strike in DC
An interesting follow up to Caribou Coffee:
The shop closed and Dick, who had gone into the Renwick Museum to see the George Catlin paintings, came back and said to me, “You HAVE to see these.” So over we went (the Renwick is right across the street from Caribou and the White House). As we enetered, the security guard informed us that we could not go in b/c we were wearing “protest buttons”. Dick is wearing his johnkerry.com t-shirt and I am wearing my DCP t-shirt, but it was the PEACE buttons we were wearing that disturbed them.
We were appalled. We asked to speak to the supervisor, who came down and told us that this was “Smithsonian POLICY”. We inquired as to how judgments were made about “protest” materials.
She said that if someone might be offended, then that would not be allowed. Dick mentioned the U.S. Constitution, and also the fact that he had been IN the Renwick twenty minutes earlier, with the same buttons on, and no one had questioned him.
After a brief discussion in which it was clear we would not win, we left and went back to the Code Pink area, where we felt compelled to share the story. On a mic.
About seven folks decided to accompany us back to the Renwick, where everyone was told the same thing we had been told.
We asked for the supervisor again and LO and BEHOLD.
Someone must have read the Constitution! Turns out you CAN wear buttons and hats with messages inside the museums!
After all, how could anyone decide what is acceptable message and what is not?
Anyway, we went back and shared the miracle of the Constitution and then the heavens opened up–HUGE thunderstorm here. SO we are home and resting.
I am not particularly hungry.
But I am mighty inspired.

Protests Against Mexico’s Federal Electoral Institute – Mexican Presidential Elections
— For Immediate Release —
Supporters of democratic rights in Mexico will be gathering on Wednesday, July 5 in front of the Mexican Consulates in Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Jose, Riverside and San Francisco to call upon Mexico’s Federal Electoral Institute (IFE) to conduct a clear and fair election.
The protest in San Francisco will take place at 4 p.m. at the Mexican Consulate, 532 Folsom Street (near First Street).
Mexican citizens everywhere have viewed this election with a great amount of scepticism. This was only magnified yesterday when the people were presented with the orchestrated “news” of the election results.
Mexicans everywhere remember the massive electoral fraud in 1988, when ballot boxes across Mexico were burned in regions that were strongholds of Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, founder of the opposition PRD. Following that election, the international community learned bit by bit about the overwhelming character of the election fraud. But by then it was too late. The IFE had already certified the “victory” of the candidate of the PRI.
Mexicans living in the United States were allowed for the first time to vote in this presidential election. But the IFE, in collaboration with the Mexican Consulates, created one roadblock after another to prevent people from voting and thereby expressing their democratic right to select the candidate of their choice.
The Mexican people know that their candidate was denied the presidency in 1988 through widespread fraud. The Mexican people know that obstacles were placed to ensure that the immigrant vote was underrepresented. This year, they know that Andrés Manuel López Obrador won the election hands down.
The IFE cannot be the political arm of the ruling parties in Mexico. It must conduct its tasks with full transparency, in the interests of democracy. The Mexican people, and we in the United States who support democratic rights, will accept nothing else.

Rachael Maddow’s voice is at half-mast and boy is it nice! :santacool:
The invasion of Iraq, a country that had nothing to do with the September 11 tragedy, is indeed a war of interest and intrigue that has usurped the standard of freedom. While the invasion morphed from a war against Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction to a war to free the Iraqi people, the Iraqis increasingly came to view the U.S. forces as occupiers, not liberators. The abuses at Abu Ghraib, the destruction of Fallujah, the Marine rampage in Haditha-all are reflections of how, in our search for “monsters to destroy,” we have found them in ourselves. And the refusal of our elected officials to put a timeline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops-despite the call to do so from both the American and Iraqi people-shows how our involvement has entrapped us “beyond the power of extrication.”

Corporate Joe Says He May Run as an Independent
Will Lieberman Apologize to Ralph Nader?
By RICK WILHELM
Lieberman Says He Will Run on His Own as an independent if He Loses the Connecticut Primary. That is according to the New York Times edition of July 3rd, 2006.
The Democrats have been complaining since 2000 about how third parties should support the “lesser of two evils.” A lot of so-called “Progressives” and “Greens” have bought into the charade. Obviously it doesn’t apply to Democrats, since Lieberman will be running against a Democrat that could cause the Republican to win, should Joey lose the election next month. Joey won years ago against a Republican who was more to the left of him. Joey was elected with the help of Bill Buckley. . .

Sure FK, send it to me if you like. What’s the file name? Oh, wait, you use a Mac, right? They don’t use file extensions, do they? It might just be that KP needed to add a “.mp3” to the end of the file name (though I think she said she had trouble finding it after she downloaded it).
The Democratic party will not change. The odds against it changing are almost astronomical. They are beholden to their corporate masters, and do not care about the poor, and do not care about the poor being systematically disenfranchised. They give lip service to the disenfranchisement only when it suits them hypocritically, such as the rigged Florida elections of the 2000 election. Yes, Bush is terrible. The Democrats are slightly better, but to continue to accept the substitute, not even good enough to be called mediocre, is to continue to be distained and made scapegoats. To continue to support that is to support perpetual defeat.
how can it be 7:40 when it was just 4:00 two minutes ago? How do these things happen? :?::!:
The working people of the United States live our lives continually with little or no voice. Only another political party by us, for us, and dedicated to us can help us. We do not except the lesser of two evils argument and will not support Democrats and “Greens” who make pretenses they are “on our side.” We do not even accept that Democrats or Greens are in fact the lesser evil. That is why a new movement is needed. A progressive worker’s movement without elitism and without pretense. The foundation of Poor People’s Working Party is the start of that movement.

P.S. was stung by another wasp last night under my arm – what IS it this year? Only one, though, so just a welt, no biggie. maybe I should use pesticides around here. :jason: :jason:
No, I’m done with the lesser of two evils theory. I had my fill of that. Especially since it’s hard to see what the lesser actually is.
A viable and desirable strategy for transcending capitalism will certainly include leaving capitalism behind. Capitalism is despicable.
It will also include, however, attaining something worthwhile in capitalism’s place. What we win must be desirable.
Leaving capitalism behind will entail in each country arousing a large portion of the population to struggle.
Winning something worthwhile in capitalism’s place will entail that the large portion of the population seeking change are all equal and active participants, defining what they are seeking and their methods. Something desirable is not imposed from above, but is created from below.
To gain sufficient support to win a new economy will involve, therefore, many battles for better conditions, better circumstances, more income and more say for those who are worst off.
More, all these battles will have to be fought in ways that lead to ever enlarging further struggle for still more gains, rather than in ways that assume that capitalism will last forever and that cause people to settle for less than revolution as the end goal.
In other words, each component of our work, by its logic and by its implications, should lead toward our long run aims. You don’t get where you want to go by running in the wrong direction.

The War was not a “mistake,” Maddow. It was a goddamn lie that the Democrats helped perpetrate. Maddow is one of the bigger “lesser of two evilists,” except she accepts the con that the Democrats will usher in a better world. (Maybe for her they will…)
Most people feel that way. I woke up.
The reason liberals concern themselves with social issues more than challenging the system itself is because social issues such as gay rights do not pose a threat to capitalism. RW

To paraphrase B. Franklin (I think), “We should all stand together, or we most surly will stand apart!”
That’s so right on, especially with dems in this area. They call themselves social democrats. Sounds all pretty to you really examine what it means and the stake they have in the corporate capitalist machine. Yuppies, they’re also called.
Druid it’s “hang together” or “hang apart” 🙂
Nicki, a lot of passion in your posts this morning…
Let us even suppose, as it is being maintained by the bourgeois economists and with them all the lawyers, all the worshippers and believers in the juridical right, all the priests of the civil and criminal code – let us suppose that this economic relationship between the exploiter and the exploited is altogether legitimate, that it is the inevitable consequence, the product of an eternal, indestructible social law, yet still it will always be true that exploitation precludes brotherhood and equality. It goes without saying that it precludes economic equality. Suppose I am your worker and you are my employer. If I offer my labor at the lowest price, if I consent to have you live off my labor, it is certainly not because of devotion or brotherly love for you. And no bourgeois economist would dare to say that it was, however idyllic and naive their reasoning becomes when they begin to speak about reciprocal affections and mutual relations which should exist between employers and employees. No, I do it because my family and I would starve to death if I did not work for an employer. Thus I am forced to sell you my labor at the lowest possible price, and I am forced to do it by the threat of hunger.
Stand sounded a little more positive than hang :jason::fist:
List the democritters who call themselves “social democrats.”
Thats why no one is in the streets too.. I still think we need to find external financing.:jason::fist:
yeah, well B. Frankin at the time was afraid of being hung for treason at the writing of the declaration, so the “hang” metaphor was appropriate…
A new party is certainly the way to go. It has to start at the local level, though. Running a 3rd party candidate for national office every four years isn’t gonna get it done. In addition to the obvious (they don’t win), they wouldn’t have anybody to play with once they got into office. Can’t do much if Congress is determined to make you look bad – and an outsider president would be the one thing that would unite the two traditional parties, to be sure). Need to get those third party candidates elected to the school boards and municipal governments. Then work on the state legislatures, and the US Congress.
After that, we can move to have a parliamentary system where we can have many different parties, all needing to find coalitions in order to get things done. That would require 67 votes in the Senate and ratification of 3/4 of the states, though.
List them? That would be a long list. Includes many people I know personally and have come to know over the years, most who have a stake in big companies and/or are on an upwardly mobile track. I do know others who aren’t like that, but we’re a minority
actually scratch that, I’m not a Dem at all, so I don’t fall into either category
In the hundred years or so prior to the War of Independence, the rich had gotten richer, and the poor, poorer. For example, in 1687 in Boston, the top 1 percent owned about 25 percent of the wealth. By 1770, the top 1 percent owned 44 percent of the wealth. During this same period, the percentage of adult males who were poor, “perhaps rented a room, or slept in the back of a tavern, owned no property, doubled from 14 percent of the adult males to 29 percent.” It was during this time that the rich introduced property qualifications for voting in order to disenfranchise the poor and protect their privileges. In Pennsylvania in 1750 for example, white males had to have fifty pounds of “lawful money” or own fifty acres of land. This meant that only 8 percent of the rural population and 2 percent of the population of Philadelphia could vote. Similar situations existed in the other states. It is important to note the way in which voting qualification requirements can be used to curb political expression. Keep in mind also that voting has never been guaranteed in this country, or made a right…
Jerry Fresia
Define “Social Democracy.”
The fears of the Framers were being confirmed. The underclasses were not taking orders. They were speaking for themselves. And they were making it quite clear that their vision of a new society was not the same as that of the Framers. This seems to have been particularly true in Philadelphia. In 1770, the first political meeting specifically restricted to mechanics was held and by 1772 craftsmen had organized their own political organization, the Patriotic Society, to promote their own candidates and agenda. Gary Nash notes that “By mid-1776, laborers, artisans, and small tradesmen, employing extralegal measures when electoral politics failed, were in clear command in Philadelphia.” In selecting delegates for the 1776 Pennsylvania Constitution, they urged voters to shun “great and overgrown rich men [who] will be improper to be trusted.” They also drew up a bill of rights to be considered which included the assertion that “an enormous proportion of property vested in a few individuals is dangerous to the rights, and destructive of the common happiness, of mankind; and therefore every free state hath a right by its laws to discourage the possession of such property.” JF
This is been going forever… we’ve got to stop it!
Here’s the stuff you don’t learn about in history class, that they don’t want you to learn (unless you pick up Howard Zinn or Chomsky in history class, that is…)

How many Democrats who run for office can be labelled as S0ocial democrats? Or even describe themselves as such?
I don’t know if the people who run for office call themselves that. People I know personally do sometimes.
What shall we think of a government to which all the truly brave and just men [and women] in the land are enemies, standing between it and those whom it oppresses? A government that pretends to be Christian and crucifies a million Christs every day!

they say it meaning they’re liberal on social issues but conservative on economic issues. They will use the word conservative too.
If any candidate starts talking about regulating corporations’ right to do what they please with their huge profits, that candidate will be quickly vilified…examples.
Ever hear SEDER state that corporations have a right to their profits, that he is a believer in capitalism.
Yes…that’s a common thing that I hear. He says it, and others do, or imply it strongly.
Re:64. Is that your definition of social democracy? Sounds more to me like a modern liberal, a typical AAR Democrat.
Is the sending NG Troops a good thing, Maddow?
I missed you by like two minutes last night 🙁
That sentiment means that worthwhile change will never come about within our current political system. I mean, if the so-called people’s party is in league with the rich and powerful… Oh I know, socialism does not work. Markets need to decide.
I fell asleep hard last night.
Doesn’t Physical apply to financial and Social to people politics ?? A Physical conservative can be Socially liberal.. He just wants a balanced budget and then what ever is left over after paying for essential services (usually nothing) he will consider spending on social programs. With a 2 trillion dollar budget with 1.2 trillion in entitlement programs, 400 billion in defense spending and 400 billion in interest payments and so many people yelling “but its my money” what is one to do ??. We are borrowing to pay the interest on the money we are borrowing.
I agree with you…
I missed you last night, a lot. I fell asleep for like two hours
Property before people, it seems – or at least the equation of property to people – is a value by no means restricted to America’s boardrooms. And the sanctimony with which such putrid sentiments are enunciated turns out to be nauseatingly similar, whether mouthed by the CEO of Standard Oil or any of the swarm of comfort zone “pacifists” queuing up to condemn the black block after it ever so slightly disturbed the functioning of business-as-usual in Seattle.
Small wonder, all-in-all, that people elsewhere in the world – the Mideast, for instance – began to wonder where, exactly, aside from the streets of the US itself, one was to find the peace America’s purportedly oppositional peacekeepers claimed they were keeping.
The answer, surely, was plain enough to anyone unblinded by the kind of delusions engendered by sheer vanity and self-absorption.
So, too, were the implications in terms of anything changing, out there, in America’s free-fire zones.
Listen, it’s the values in this country that are the problem. The utter and complete selfishness. The “care about me, who cares about anyone else” attitude. It’s disgusting.
That’s why Americans are despised all over the world….because of that selfishness. Because people cringe at any thought that they might have to help somebody other than themselves, that they should care about the poor and the suffering or just their neighbors…that they should give a shit about the land they live on…
Fiscal conservative. Presently, people see that CEOs and such get huge amounts of wealth, and working people get lower expectations, at best. Imbalance. There is an incredible amount of wealth in this country. Problems of housing, healthcare, poverty, and such can easlily be alleviated. Won’t happen as long as such corporate behavior of rewarding the extreme few and shrugging of the vast majority is considered fine. Make it illegal. Throw these creeps out of power. Make them illegal. People over profits.
that’s the term I was trying to come up with earlier…fiscal conservative. :fu:
The system is geared to making 1% the benificiaries of most of the wealth. The disparity must be maintained at all costs. Propaganda is the major weapon; iron-fisted violence by the government is no longer an option. Keep struggling.
Hartman pointed out that up to the first world war corporations were incorporated on the state level and had to
1. Show what they were proposing to do was of public or social benefit
2. Show that what they were proposing to do was harmless to the public
3. Agree to contribute to the public good ( pay taxes I guess)
4. Corporations were limited in scope to the states in which they were incorporated.
Corporations had limited life spans (like 50 years) then they had to go thought the incorporation process again with review of there previous performance.
The oil companies and the railroads were the first multistate corporations.
It wasn’t explained why the regulations on incorporation changed.
:?::?::?::?::?::?:
Democrap and Repo elites want fiscal conservativism for you, and generous liberal and socialist policies for them. This is the con we must smash.
I can’t believe how much I learned in the few months I’ve been on this blog.
The charter system changed because the faction of the elite who would benefit by “liberalizing” corporations were able to push through legislation that gave immense power to corporations. Corporations are nothing but private tyrannies.
what’s the quote about it’s hard to see a certain point of view if you’re receiving a paycheck from someone? Ack, I can’t remember it…That’s the thing…people don’t see past their paychecks
You mean you don’t learn as much on the Daily Cuss?
oh yeah, right!
I get my fill of knowledge right :nixon:
Amidst all the turmoil and exultation that marked the final days of the German Democratic Republic, an East German worker was heard to say, “What bothered us most about the Government is that they treated us like idiots”. In the capitalist lands, of course, people are first made into idiots, so when they are treated as such few take notice. The difference is one of transparency.
One major virtue of centrally planned societies, then, even undemocratic ones, even ones that don’t work very well, is that it is easy to see who is responsible for what goes wrong. It is those who made the plan. The same cannot be said of market economies which have as one of their main functions to befuddle the understanding of those who live in them. This is essential if people are to misdirect whatever frustration and anger they feel about the social and economic inequality, unemployment, idle machines and factories, ecological destruction, widespread corruption and exaggerated forms of greed that are the inevitable byproducts of market economies. But to the extent this is so, only a critique of market mystification will enable us to put the blame where it belongs, which is to say—on the capitalist market as such and the class that rules over it, in order to open people up to the need for creating a new way of organizing the production and distribution of social wealth…

It is a ruse that free markets lead to the best price/performance situation. There is a lot of farm land in America that is not suitable for growing things unless you irrigate. There is also a lot of farm land where you don’t have to irrigate. The corporate farms have taken a lot of the dry land farm areas out of production because of the incremental costs. A lot of small towns all over the great planes are for the most part abandoned. Even in the smallest towns there is probably a Safeway store or maybe a Safeway and another national chain market or a WalMart. The produce they get comes from all over the hemisphere and a lot of the cost is in transportation not in what it costs to grow it to begin with. if we were to run out of diesel fuel lot of people would find nothing on there shelves.
free markets kill creativity and the arts also…and that’s one thing NOBODY talks about. Of course most people don’t consider the arts “that important”
Laura Flanders is in the know, too.
Oscar Wilde wrote a great book on socialism. He goes into how markets killi creativity.
so just have to pick and choose among AAR shows…
It’s really easy to figure out. Excessive competition means that the rewards go to the most aggressive producers, not the best producers. I dig Oscar Wilde, what book?
Thunderstorm!!! Zeus is turning all of Hartsdale into a huge quagmire.
The early morning , night time and weekend programs are probably the best for reaching Joe Beer can. The drive time programs may or may not be good. People stuck in traffic might want to be entertained not given acid indigestion.. The AAR day time programs have to be for the Liberal minded lying around the pool. The lack of solutions in all their programs probably makes for a great market for XM in replacement radios.:yuck::eek:
This is how we got into trouble last time about the self-hating stuff. I remarked that only Riley and Flanders discussed Israel. Naturally, that was because both are Gentiles. Therefore…To be Jewish and to speakout is to be… :rofl2::rofl2::omg:
I must watch my thoughts…
You can still call in and email concerns about taboo matters. And have a better chance of being heard on AAR. I did not mean to imply that it was hopeless at AAR concerning Israel/US/Palestinians.
No, it’s ok, I officially adopted the title of self-hating Jewish Pagan babe of the blog…. you can use it all you like 🙂
G’Night, G’Day One and All:wink:
I understand what you mean.
The Soul of Man Under Socialism
Oscar Wilde
The chief advantage that would result from the establishment of Socialism is, undoubtedly, the fact that Socialism would relieve us from that sordid necessity of living for others which, in the present condition of things, presses so hardly upon almost everybody. In fact, scarcely anyone at all escapes.
Now and then, in the course of the century, a great man of science, like Darwin; a great poet, like Keats; a fine critical spirit, like M. Renan; a supreme artist, like Flaubert, has been able to isolate himself, to keep himself out of reach of the clamorous claims of others, to stand ‘under the shelter of the wall,’ as Plato puts it, and so to realise the perfection of what was in him, to his own incomparable gain, and to the incomparable and lasting gain of the whole world. These, however, are exceptions. The majority of people spoil their lives by an unhealthy and exaggerated altruism – are forced, indeed, so to spoil them. They find themselves surrounded by hideous poverty, by hideous ugliness, by hideous starvation. It is inevitable that they should be strongly moved by all this. The emotions of man are stirred more quickly than man’s intelligence; and, as I pointed out some time ago in an article on the function of criticism, it is much more easy to have sympathy with suffering than it is to have sympathy with thought. Accordingly, with admirable, though misdirected intentions, they very seriously and very sentimentally set themselves to the task of remedying the evils that they see. But their remedies do not cure the disease: they merely prolong it. Indeed, their remedies are part of the disease…
What are we listening to this morning? Is that SF station KGO any good in Morning Drive? Link…
Yes, individualism…strange how propaganda twisted it up so that people now equate capitalism with individualism…capitalism squashes individualistic tendencies and just rewards aggressiveness…it does not reward creativity
well I couldn’t get the AAR stream and I’ve been too lazy to look for anything else so far…
They try to solve the problem of poverty, for instance, by keeping the poor alive; or, in the case of a very advanced school, by amusing the poor.
But this is not a solution: it is an aggravation of the difficulty. The proper aim is to try and reconstruct society on such a basis that poverty will be impossible. And the altruistic virtues have really prevented the carrying out of this aim. Just as the worst slave-owners were those who were kind to their slaves, and so prevented the horror of the system being realised by those who suffered from it, and understood by those who contemplated it, so, in the present state of things in England, the people who do most harm are the people who try to do most good; and at last we have had the spectacle of men who have really studied the problem and know the life – educated men who live in the East End – coming forward and imploring the community to restrain its altruistic impulses of charity, benevolence, and the like. They do so on the ground that such charity degrades and demoralises. They are perfectly right. Charity creates a multitude of sins.
:fist:
I feel like crap; I ate leftover Thai food. Thought I had heart troubles…:rofl2:
In an evolved, humanistic, modern culture, poverty SHOULD be impossible. There should be no excuse for it whatsover.
Awww! I’ve gone through that. Although Thai food TASTES so damn good…all those coconut curries…
I think true socialism works only when it is properly managed ..Socialism is like a gigantic corporation where all goods, services and capital are collected by one entity and redistributed.. The people at the point of collection are ripe for corruption.:rant1:
any government system can be corrupted, unfortunately…there have to be safeguards put in place
We have got to run experiments and such things. Nothing is perfect, but egalitarian socialism will be much better than the capitalist racket we endure now.
“racket” is the right word :omg:
Turning Quibbles Over Footnotes into Academic Felonies
My Trial By Media
By WARD CHURCHILL
Bolder, Colorado.
On February 2, 2005, Colorado Governor Bill Owens called for me to be fired because of statements I made about U.S. foreign policy that were clearly protected by the First Amendment. It would have been illegal to do so then, and it is just as illegal today.
More than 16 months ago Governor Owens informed then-CU President Betsy Hoffman that his office would “work closely with her and the Board of Regents to terminate” me. A few weeks later President Hoffman expressed her fears of a “new McCarthyism” to the Boulder faculty, and a few days later she resigned. Apparently this message was not lost on the remaining CU administrators.
The fact that CU has spent over a year and a great deal of money conducting a sham investigation of “research misconduct” does not convert an otherwise illegal action into a legitimate one. In its determination to fire me, the University has continuously violated its own rules, the Regents’ laws on academic freedom, and the U.S. Constitution’s guarantees of due process and equal protection. As today’s press release illustrates, CU administrators have conducted a “trial by media,” not a confidential personnel investigation. Today’s report is but the latest step in this process. . .
This process has not demonstrated that I engaged in any serious research misconduct but that, after more than a year of painstaking review, those charged with firing me could find nothing more than a few footnotes and questions of attribution to quibble over.
he writes well…
Loyalty! Are you more loyal to the Pope or to the President?
heard this advertised on XM radio this morning.
oh, and rachael maddow doesn’t know enough about intetellectual property rights to take a swipe at it.

Sounds like Fred called in to Springer. Talking about the US taking a nuclear hit.
:omg: I hate myself… :rofl2:
Springer just got a call about a Korean nuclear strike. I thought Fred had got a call through.
damn! I have to get that stream going
Was it Fred???
Criticize Israel, and you will demonstrate that you hate yourself.
No. Fred is listening to Jay.:rofl2:
:yawn:A foreign county other than maybe Russia or China who have the technology to outflank our detection systems would have to be out of its mind to launch an ICBM at the US.. Sending a 200 megaton device to us in a container yes missile no.:yuck:
Ohhh Ken Lay found dead .. sounds more like Communist Russia every day..
I was born with the Zionist leanings hardwired in my brain. I can’t think, nor am I supposed to, and I’m a traitor if I have an original thought and I must look in the mirror and see shit. That’s how it works, right?
Anybody have updates on Mexico? Anymore missing ballots show up? Where is Mr. Palast?
Ken Lay found dead? Suicide? Hey. His ass was already toast, wasn’t it?
ohhh, Atlantic City casinos actually CLOSED…my mom is soooo going to freak out… I had a research assignment for her to do down there..
Nicki: look at the first post of the day., the gap is down to six tenths of one percent.:eek:
Lay was found dead in Aspen of all places.. The news at the top of the hour said it was from a possble heart attack.. Marvin said it was not determined yet..
stay tuned….:tinfoil:
Here’s to future headlines…
Scalia and Clarence missing; Cheney hunting trip
Alito abducted by a UFO in Arizona.

No. I mean since then. NOW. Real time. Any updates since then?
LOL good old Jeff Gannon! We need him back in the news again
Doesn’t the news from Mexico come via rail freight ??
I thought you were jiving about Ken Lay dying.

We have any crypto-christians out there?:jesus:
You can’t live on $5.15 per hour. Rent! Mogen David wine! McDonalds!
no, don’t even know what stream he’s on…is he saying anything fascinating?
I am dancing with myself.:yinyang:
Good Morning :joe: hey! it’s RAINING!
I am listening to Springer. :rofl2:
you don’t know how many fights I’ve had with people regarding the minimum wage…their arguments “people with minimum wage jobs don’t support families, they’re usually teenagers.” Such BULLSHIT propaganda that people buy…
Hey Krista. Yeah, here also. Rain is the norm these days.
There should be jobs available daily. Clean up the environment jobs, and such. Supplement wages. Why are we kept at beggary levels?
Self-hating!
ohhh!!! let the visuals take over
some of these songs on Springer are so hokey… 😐
The Israelis have insisted for years that Iran has a clandestine program to build a bomb, and will do so as soon as it can. Israeli officials have emphasized that their “redline” is the moment Iran masters the nuclear fuel cycle, acquiring the technical ability to produce weapons-grade uranium. “Iran managed to surprise everyone in terms of the enrichment capability,” one diplomat familiar with the Israeli position told me, referring to Iran’s announcement, this spring, that it had successfully enriched uranium to the 3.6-per-cent level needed to fuel a nuclear-power reactor. The Israelis believe that Iran must be stopped as soon as possible, because, once it is able to enrich uranium for fuel, the next step – enriching it to the ninety-per-cent level needed for a nuclear bomb – is merely a mechanical process.
Israeli intelligence, however, has also failed to provide specific evidence about secret sites in Iran, according to current and former military and intelligence officials. In May, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert visited Washington and, addressing a joint session of Congress, said that Iran “stands on the verge of acquiring nuclear weapons” that would pose “an existential threat” to Israel. Olmert noted that Ahmadinejad had questioned the reality of the Holocaust, and he added, “It is not Israel’s threat alone. It is a threat to all those committed to stability in the Middle East and to the well-being of the world at large.” But at a secret intelligence exchange that took place at the Pentagon during the visit, the Pentagon consultant said, “what the Israelis provided fell way short” of what would be needed to publicly justify preventive action.
The issue of what to do, and when, seems far from resolved inside the Israeli government. Martin Indyk, a former U.S. Ambassador to Israel, who is now the director of the Brookings Institution’s Saban Center for Middle East Policy, told me, “Israel would like to see diplomacy succeed, but they’re worried that in the meantime Iran will cross a threshold of nuclear know-how – and they’re worried about an American military attack not working. They assume they’ll be struck first in retaliation by Iran.” Indyk added, “At the end of the day, the United States can live with Iranian, Pakistani, and Indian nuclear bombs – but for Israel there’s no Mutual Assured Destruction. If they have to live with an Iranian bomb, there will be a great deal of anxiety in Israel, and a lot of tension between Israel and Iran, and between Israel and the U.S.”
SEYMOUR HERSH
😯 so i was walking across the truckstop parking lot and a scorpion started chasing me!
oh shut up Springer, this society DOES totally devalue teachers, and that’s why they earn shit….
He is using economics logic. Fiscal responsibility. Within the budget…
😯
Subscribe to the Forward…:omg:
well he’s ignorant. 👿
I-80.
:?why isnt the bug-eyed smiley working!
yep. That and the New Republic. Nice advertisers on AAR, right?
It’s how most of them think.
hello Sean… :peace:
I’d Subscribe to The Forward before I subscribed to New Republic. The Forward is more honest.
I heard the New Republic is in real trouble these days… I hope they fold
Yes, You have the freedom to become a capitalist.
:-(smileys hate me!
NR used to be relatively liberal.
that was before Peter Beinart and his ilk DLC-Demmed it up… 😯
poor Sean…
No. I meant it used to be liberal in the 1960s.
ohhhh…. gotta miss those 60’s…
Did a scorpion chase you for real? Are you still in Phx? Is it raining by you?
how are you feeling? Did you try peppermint tea? I was going to recommend that earlier…
Ken Lay dead of a heart attack. How come I’m not sad?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/enron_lay_dc
Krista, Sean… you guys have to post the photographs you took!
At least we don’t have to spend the money on his incarceration and we don’t have to worry about him getting pardoned.
Sean just sent me the one he took and I still need to get something to upload from my phone
well, looking forward to seeing them 🙂
sean and krista!
sean and maron!
Sean’s probably loading them on his myspace.
:peace:didnt really chase me but it was coming in my direction i was scared to nap on the floor in the waiting room while my ac got fixed!
im like 40 miles outside of phoenix gonna head towards san diego soon
Yay! Your ac is fixed
wooo cool!
I havent read al of this busy day yet, but I’d say that the deregulation of corporations has been a long term project for the rethugs…and that capitalism, while not my favorite thing, is OK if strongly regulated…as all of this crap obviously needs to be.
Reagan’s sweeping deregulation across the boards were the first that I was fully aware of on a political level, and that goes along wityh all of that small government bullshit….but I remember them saying that corporations could regulate themselves. I remember thinking that that depends on the innate goodness and empathy of mankind….good luck!
Humans are just animals who fight for the carcass and immigrate to find greener pastures for themselves and their immediate tribe….to expect some sort of higher behavior without a framework is insane.
But of course, Reagan et al didnt expect shit. They just wanted to open things up so that they and their friends could pillage.
And as a great addendum to all of this Keny Lay just died of a massive heart attack…
couldnt happen to a nicer guy! Its only too bad that he didnt live to hear his sentence and realize the horror of so many years in jail!
On the home front….the doctor’s office didnt even know that the operation had been cancelled and the insurance comapny has all the approvals in order there…so now they are trying to figure out what happened at the hospital and get the thing rescheduled.
Its rainign like hell today any my eye is worse…its a bloody mess and it feels like my brain exploded a little inside…if this is the wondow to the soul, oh my god!!…but at least I can go and pick up my farm share this afternoon.
Does anyone know a good recipe for 3 stalks of rhubarb?
And these garlic sprout curls…I gave a bunch of them. They are very garlicy but like a curly veggie….maybe a flower of the garlic plant?
fucking ken lay! another cut and run republican!
seanie, krista, Maron!! reasons to smile!!!
Thanks for the pics ss!!
If Maron has bad news tonight IM gonna be really sad. I cant live without some sorta Maron show….
at least he could wait till things are more stable for me…heh heh…
:rofl2: Seanie!! You’re almost as bad as I am.
I was goign out with a guy for a while who was the son of a famous broadway producer who had moved to TX to become the head of a University dept…anyway the father was a big friend of kenny boy, and mainly because Kenny was funneling somehting like 50 mil into the dallas opera house theater or whatever and this guy had specialized into some sort of theater building company, having spent 50 years on broadway production in NYC…well, I guess that its possible that the guy was just a patron of the arts, but I keep thinking that all of thise people should go and take a piece of that opera house because it was their stolen money that allowed Lay to do whatever it was that he did….
Its like Gates giving money that hes made by outsourcing jobs…and that makes him the best giver int he world!
and when these rich wives have garage sales of stuff that they got on the backs of the workers…I always imagine the people showing up and just carting stuff away…just grab what you can…gold shower curtains and faucets…whatever….
is that looting?
For some reason I put the View on. I hate this show!! But they have…um…maybe its Brandi?…in for the scary Star jones…and I almost thought it was Star herself…though unlikely after the amount shes been on TV this past week.
SCARY!!…they have dwindled and the only really good one (though I liked it when Joy Behar twisted neocon Elizabeth’s newly surgicalized hand, while in the middle of a political fight…she just twisted the hell out of it and elizabeth went down wimpering…and joy was like “oh my go, did I hurt you?”)
Sean and Krista love the photo! Two great looking :sheep:ple!
Oh, and Sean, in the photo with you and Maron, you’re looking good! :peace:
I wonder if Ken Lay didn’t off himself. Anybody with a few connections could probably get their hands on something that would make it look like you had a hear tattck – at least if they didn’t look too closely. Gotta preserve the life insurance for the little woman – it'[s bad enough she’s down to only a few houses.
Rhubarb sauce Melina.I made some yesterday with 5 stalks. Or may be some little tarts.:knit: Good luck with everything. Take it easy if you can.
Nice photos Sean!
Melina, I’m so sorry about your eye… I’m glad at least that they’re going to reschedule the surgery – insurance companies are hell to deal with, I’m sure it’s a major step for them to agree that you’re in the right, though.
Sean, Krista, I love the pics, thanks for sharing. I have to go tutor for a few hours, I’ll catch you sheeple later :sheep:
Hey! It’s STILL raining. Maybe we get to have a real rainy day! Woo HOO!
I hope your eye is okay Melina, sounds like you have a lot of health issues to deal with. :gate:
:-(its not raining here
😯
Too bad Sean, it’s nice and drizzly here. I hope this keeps up all day.
:omg:
😯 😕 those two never work for me:nod:
:fire:
Big fire last night on a NOAA dock in Seattle last night- smokey.
Sean- whaat were you doing on a Mac the other day?
hey, what was on in the place of the Majority report last night?…was Maron also a rerun or someone else?
The biggest problem with “free” markets is that they aren’t free. Once you get control of the money, you control the laws and the regulations. That, and the industrial revolution took control of production away from the individual, and gave it to those who could afford to buy machines. Now instead of making the best pair of shoes for the best price, people have to do the best work for the least amount of money just to stay employed – and even then their jobs go overseas.
I don’t know as any system that involves humans could ever be free from corruption. Corporations are entitled to make a profit, but they aren’t entitled to make a profit at the expense of society and the workers. And they certainly aren’t entitled to the same (or better) rights that people (in theory) have.
I guess I think some sort of well-regulated sociocapitalism would work best. Society should guarantee a basic standard of living and healthcare for everyone. No matter what, you get a safe, decent space to call your own and keep you and your shit warm and dry, and enough food to be healthy. And broadband Internet access.
People don’t need to be obscenely wealthy, either. Take away the motivation for greed and screwing everybody over the way Enron did.
I want a society where everybody’s needs are taken care of, so you get to do what makes you happy, instead of being miserable and/or poor. Not sure who they’d get to clean the shit, though. That’s another thing that bugs me – why do the better jobs (more or less) pay so well, and the crappy jobs so poorly? You want me to clean up puke and shit and god knows what else? Damn well better pay me well to do it. You want me to bust my ass in a foundry? Fuckin’ pay me (did it for two years, and that was plenty).
whoa ok well the one never works whatever this one 😯 isnt working!
:growl: whatever!
they have a trailer with macs that are online on the tour i wasnt getting any wi-fi and wanted to hit the blog for a bit before i went to bed!
😯
:omg:works on a mac!
Last night they replayed the MR with Marc on.
The pictures put a BIG smile on my face. 😀
BRILLIANT – haven’t been to your site in a long while – I like the renovation!
I thought what you thought, PJ, about Lay. Preserve the life insurance so the houses can operate and wifey-poo is taken care of. What a nice guy. :yuck:
Seder doing Franken’s show.
Asta Boettcher ate a scorpian tail once. He had the runs pretty badly for a while. Talk about needing the mop & bucket.
SEND RAIN DOWN HERE, PLEASE!
melina, hang in there! :gate:
Lay was 100million in “personal debt”
Do you think she will be able to keep a house?:knit:
Heh. You guys see this?
From Marc’s Blog:
This is really no fucking way to send me off to DC for a long lonely month away from home. And how fucking long will it be until a new show – if there even is one – gets on the air. Fucking assholes. I thought we were supposed to be “delighted.”
Oh man PJ this really sucks:-(
Be careful on that drive .
Be safe…
Fuck AAR!:fu:
:jason:dick of the year aar management!
:fu: AAR
I WANT A REFUND FOR MY PODCAST.
:jason:
:priest:a curse upon the people that make the big decisions!
:barf:go figure!
:fu:so do we still blame danny goldberg?
Abso-freak’ing-lutely we blame goldgrinch. maron wouldn’t be yanked around if it wasn’t for that jerkoff.
They better put Maron in a KEY ROLE to make up for the turmoil they’ve given him – and us.
:mad:bastards!
i mean do we blame danny g for it happening again?:?
I’ve been saving the shows and using them to keep me company on the weekends in DC, or for the rides to Syracuse. Now what? You know, just like when MS was killed, I feel like I’m losing a friend again. On top of sitting here at home alone with the dog and the cats, waiting for it to be late enough to leave, now there’s this. Wendesday’s really do suck.
I have a feeling (no inside info or anything) that they want him to go back to NY, and I don’t think he will. Living away from home sucks, I’ve come to find out.
So, I wonder if Marc has considered selling his house and just moving to NY. Mishna can be a comedian in NY can’t she??
I remember him saying that there was NFW Mishna would consider moving to NY.
I can understand not wanting to live in NY. But I could do it if I was living with Marc:love:
:alc: I’ll drink to that Kristapea!
i hope he moves back and does mornings. his ratings HAD to be better than aar mornings now. he seemed pretty happy once he had the schedule grove. We have a bi-coastal marriage – Chattahoochee River and the Tigris River.
maron was ahead of the curve in telling us about this. glad huffpo took it up, though.
Who Killed the Electric Car?
I guess a lot would depend on the money (if you get enough to go home a couple times a month and have a decent place to live), as well as on the financial status of AAR. And what the guarantee is.
But he was motivated to do it in the first place because he wanted to help throw out the bums, and he always said he enjoyed doing the show, in spite of the hours.
Now, though, he’s been there and done that, and is back at home again. I would sure as hell have a tough time re-screwing up my life, particularly after being screwed over by the company a couple of times.
Electric car movie opens on 7/21 in DC. I’m just so friggin’ happy that I’ll be there to see it, and I wound have to worry about any pesky Maron shows to listen to either. hoo. ray.
I just hope Maron will have a 4-year no cut contract!
Leftist candidate claims widespread election irregularities
MEXICO CITY – Mexico began a marathon review of vote tallies Wednesday to determine whether conservative candidate Felipe Calderon really won the tight presidential race, while his leftist challenger insisted he was victorious and denounced what he called widespread irregularities.
A preliminary count showed Calderon, of President Vicente Fox’s conservative National Action Party, ahead by just 1 percentage point. Charismatic leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is demanding a recount of every ballot, saying he plans to prove he defeated Calderon.
“The political stability of the country hangs in the balance,” he said Wednesday.

This is not much of an update on Mexico but..
:crap::crap::crap:The thing about the MMS is really to bad AAR is going down the :crap:er big time..:growl::growl::growl:
Well folks, time to finish packing up my toys and get ready to roll. Poor Siggy knows I’m leaving, and hasn’t gotten more than a foot away from me all day. I wish I was leaving on happier news. With any luck, I’ll see y’all around nine or so tonight. Later :sheep:le
And what about AAR’s longevity, isn’t that in question in NY? What if Marc moves back to NY and they go under, will he be left high and dry.
Have a safe drive PJ. Don’t pick up any hitchhikers.
Does anyone know how long Marc’s latest contract was for? I assumed it was for a year from when MS ended. I guess they had to offer him something since he is under contract. Marc has always wanted to make it in show business and I guess LA is the place for that. Plus, if he moves back to NY it may mean the end of his marriage. He was miserable not having her with him all the time. It’s hard to guess without knowing what they offered him.
Thanks KP, and don’t you pick up any truckers. 😉
I remember he was talking about Cobra insurance- (Which is when you pay out of pocket for the same plan that you had with your previous job.) So his MMS contract didn’t include health insurance.
Coulter wins Sitting Duck award; Last awarded to
columnist who made up 43 people
Conservative firebrand Ann Coulter was awarded the ‘Sitting Duck Award’ by the National Society of Newspaper columnists, who met in Boston this past weekend, Editor and Publisher reports.
The award, typically doled out in an ironic fashion, came with a statement from the society that Coulter received the prize “for cheapening political discourse in America.”
“We award the Lame Duck reluctantly, because we know Ms. Coulter is desperate for any kind of attention,” the society added.

surprised?
(melina may need to post…)
An Outcry Rises as Debt Collectors Play Rough
The rise in American consumer debt has been accompanied by a sharp increase in complaints about aggressive and sometimes unscrupulous tactics by debt collection agencies, a phenomenon that has government regulators increasingly concerned.
My cousin and I were seriously thinking about setting up a business to remove debt collectors.. but our cost to travel would be so high most of the time it would be more expedient to just pay off the debt. We figured that if you owed more than about 5000 dollars we could do the job and you would end up ahead. On top of that the debt collector wouldn’t be so anxious to collect debts the next time providing there was a next time..We figured that if its legal for ORKIN to remove cockroaches this should be perfectly legal and the experience and target practice might prove valuable later on. :hubba::hubba::barf::yuck:
I can’t believe AAR is pulling Marc’s show.:rant1: Who hired the idiots running the place? Rove? :tinfoil:
A couple of weeks ago, when Randi announced that she has signed a new, 4-year contract, she said that she had been forced to let two writers go but that she hoped to bring them back if another show being discussed did indeed happen. Then she said something like, “Come on back, ya basstid. We miss you.” My immediate thought was that she was talking about Marc.
Being a procrastinator, I have been putting off forking over $$$ for AAR Premium; I was waiting for Marc’s show to be sindicated. Now I’m glad I didn’t give the :jerk:s money. What would it get me? Videos of Springer and Franken?:yuck:
We need Marc and Jim on the air. And maybe, just maybe, given Randi’s comments, “management” has realized the error of Goldjerk’s ways and is going to restore Morning Sedition to the place where it belongs.
What this all means for Marc personally I can’t guess. Bicoastal things are really, really tough. Maybe Mishna has had a change of heart about NYC. IIRC, Marc said that she was so traumatized by 9/11 (because she worked downtown here, somewhere near the WTC) that she fled back to LA. Maybe enough time has passed for her?
:tinfoil:There is a lot of doubt on DU about whether Ken Lay is dead. :tinfoil: There is also a lot of speculation that Bushco bumped him off just like the communist party got rid of people in the Soviet Union.:rant1:
So, 9/11 is why Mishna won’t live in NY? It seems to me that LA has as much of a chance of getting a big hit as NY.
I wanna see the body now.
I’m extremely dubious about trying to reanimate MS. In my experience, trying to get back to something that has passed has never worked out. It’s just not the same.
Yeah .. LA might be in range of one of NK missiles one of these days. On the other hand the LA rail yards probably handle a thousand tank cars of toxic material each day.::eek::yuck:
I still think Marc should talk with Stephie about the Jones radio network..:idea:

Wait a minute, I think some of them are in Tempe
Sucks to hear about MMS. I finally watched the bonus version of Left Of The Dial last night (the one with Marc and Randi doing commentary), and it is hysterical. They are NUTS if they let Marc go. Hopefully he’ll have better news as negotiations progress.
In other news, Ken Lay was killed by a North Korean test missile. I tell you, what some guys won’t do to stay out of jail.

Kicked in the balls dot com is right.
Would you haul yourself and your wife off to N. Y. based on the word of these bastards?
And what’s a contract worth if AAR goes under, which is really looking likely.
Bye bye Sammy.
TMMS ending? Eeeeek. Don’t like coming home and reading stuff like this. What can we do? Petition and letter writing time again?
Gypsy posted this over on Marc’s blog. 😯

I’m sad now folks, good morning,as it is

Mexico leftist has slim early lead in vote recount. Now the Florida Vote Erasing Crew Must be on Red Alert to Try and Install the Bush Conservative Candidate
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexico’s leftist presidential candidate held a narrow, 2.6 percentage point lead over his conservative rival on Wednesday with results in from half of polling stations in a fiercely contested election.
It was too soon to say, however, whether Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s lead would hold.
Results on display at Mexico’s Federal Electoral Institute showed Lopez Obrador had 37.11 percent of the vote with results in from 54.92 percent of polling stations.

Court OKs City Ordinance Barring Big Boxes. Wal-Mart Isn’t Smiling.
Wal-Mart lost another one.
A state appeals court ruled that a California city’s ordinance barring big-box retailer Wal-Mart doesn’t infringe on the company’s constitutional rights.
The ruling is the third time the courts have sided with Turlock, Calif., against the world’s largest retailer.
Quoted in The Los Angeles Times, Turlock Mayor Curt Andre put it succinctly:
I’m extremely pleased and feel extremely vindicated.
Communities across the nation have protested Wal-Mart’s attempts to build mega-supercenters that drive out family-owned businesses and impoverish entire communities with its low wages. Big-box retailers and supercenters such as Wal-Mart transform family-supporting, middle-class retail jobs into lower-paying jobs that often leave workers unable to pay bills.
With big-box retailers and supercenters tending to convert communities’ union-scale retail jobs to fewer, lower-paying jobs, the difference in overall compensation, including wages and benefits, is “as much as $8 an hour,” according to an October 2003 report prepared for the city of Los Angeles.
In fact, for every $1 wage cut, the local economy loses a total $2.08 as less money circulates through the local economy.
According to The Los Angeles Times, Wal-Mart sued Turlock soon after the City Council passed an ordinance in 2004 that had the effect of barring a 225,000-square-foot supercenter.
Wal-Mart lost in Stanislaus County Superior Court in 2004 and appealed the case to the California 5th District Court of Appeal in Fresno, which ruled against the corporation in April.

In this Mexico recount I envision a table with several people counting ballots and a person in fatigues standing on one end with an M16 and a guy in blue jeans and a sweat shirt standing on the other end with an AK47.. I will bet the count agrees very closely with the exit polls. In the US we have the same table but two lawyers.. the count always comes out differently.:rant1:

Lieberman, Lamont and the Greens
Party Politics in Connecticut
By VINCENT MARUFFI
The recent news regarding Senator Joe Lieberman’s intention to attempt to run as a “petitioning Democrat” should he lose the upcoming August 8 Connecticut Democratic Senatorial primary has put this tiny state in the unusual position of national prominence. Rarely does a state with only seven electoral votes have the chance to affect the national debate on any subject.
Although there are other issues discussed in the campaign, the primary between Senator Lieberman and Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont has become a referendum on Lieberman’s blind support for the invasion and occupation of Iraq, with the Lamont campaign calling for withdrawal of troops and closing of all bases.
The lefty blogs have been leading the Lamont charge since the campaign’s inception attempting to rally anti-war Democrats across the country to support the quixotic efforts of a heretofore relative unknown in CT politics. Their efforts have helped narrow the gap in pre-primary polling to the point where there is a legitimate shot of the biggest upset in Connecticut politics since Lowell Weicker’s victory as an independent for Governor in 1990…
I hope I can do some drawing later…
I was a champion speller, of sorts.
bloggers CAN affect things… :fist:
I’m pretty damn good also. I can tell. I can’t ever remember wincing at anything you type 🙂
[…] If Lieberman wins the primary then Lamont should immediately pledge his support for a true anti-war campaign, such as the Green Party’s Ralph Ferrucci. Lamont supporters would do well to do the same. It would show that there is a real debate on the Iraq war in Connecticut politics and in turn help foment a real debate in the country this campaign season.

Hey. The Maron news sounds like good news to me. A new show on AAR.
Hey! Where do some of you people get the info that AAR is going down? I don’t believe it for a minute. Randi just signed a 4 year contract! Yeah, going down…
(Please share your data.)
Your humor is deadly, Fred!:rofl2:
LOL Fred
Marc is getting a new show? Isn’t this all this in negotiations? I admit I may be a little behind on the news
On July third, eleven Nazis from the National Socialist Movement held a rally here in Olympia on the steps of the Washington State Capitol. Twelve uniformed Nazis stood by a podium, secure behind a six foot hurricane fence protected by two-hundred officers from the Washington State Patrol and over one-hundred feet of secured space between them and an audience apparently only comprised of protestors and the press.
I agree with Nicki.. losing WLIB doesn’t mean much other than they lost WLIB as a fully affiliated station. AAR isn’t even located at WLIB any more..:yuck::eek::shock:
I should have been more clear. Your guess is as good as mine on the Maron stuff. I was reading the tea leaves. It appears that an offer is on the table. I gathered this through today’s blog posts.
yes, we allow them to speak to their peace.
::whips out Tarot Cards::: I dont do tea leaves, buuuut….
These snarky blogs have been trashing AAR over WLIB from the beginning. Perhaps AAR has found another flagship in NYC. How hard could that be in the BIG Apple?
I see the two of pentacles for the Marc Maron show. Which clearly means things are still in negotiation :omg:
I don’t know…I guess I’ll find out next month (I think) when AAR stops broadcasting from WLIB…
Randi’s voice is getting to me right now 😐
:tinfoil:One reason Maddow and Riley may be diversifying their programs might be that their major audience is from WLIB and they are nervous about maybe getting downsized with the demise of WLIB..:shock::yuck:
Re 264: One of those Jones/democracy Radio creeps made WLIB an offer they could not refuse. WLIB is now another KPOJ. Get a physical Flagship station. Hey, West New York might have a place open. Or does it have to be Manhattan?
well I wouldn’t be able to get a Western New York station…too far away.
Riley is a long time employee of WLIB. I like his show. Rachel gets on my neves sometimes, but so do a lot of liberals. Her July 4th Iran/Contra show was good. I think I will sign up for Premium.
New JERSEY! EVEN A 50,000 WATT POWER SMOKER?
Hartsville. Any stations available there?
If the streaming continues to be as bad as it’s been lately I’m going to sign up for Premium also
There are some stations in Westchester, like in New Rochelle and possibly one in White Plains…not sure
A lot of stations on Long Island
Riley and Maddow work for AAR. I know Riley gets phonecalls from everywhere. Maddow has a cult following that rivals that of Maron’s. What am I saying? I need to go to the post office….Get moving today. …….
:jesus:
you need to paint also! I’m supposed to keep after you regarding that :pent:
Michael Albert grew up in New Rochelle.
Hey. I don’t know anything about NY geography. I am just throwing out names. How hard would it be to set up shop in Norwalk?
Be my nude model.
a radio station there? I suppose. I don’t know how far the signal would reach, I suppose it would reach this area. I get some Western CT stations
Someone here posted an article from some right wing site about AAR. Obviously taken with a gigantic grain of salt. When I talked to the woman at AAR that deals with affiliates she indicated that negotiations were going fine, but then, of course she would say that to me.
I need to take more pictures then…either that or just show up at your door :omg:
Or maybe my friend sent me that article. I don’t think I could find it now.
KKZN is like 5,000 watts and you can hear them +/- 150 miles from Denver. People in Wyoming get them.. :tinfoil:It might depend on the frequency, obviously the topography and maybe the humidity.
Let’s give a Great Big Apple Welcome to Ed Schultz! :omg:
Phoenix. You are next!
Or meet halfway.
it’s hard to get stations around here on AM more than, let’s say, 100 miles away…and those are the very strong ones.
KEX is 50,000. It blasted right through to Bend, in Central Oregon. WPOJ is 25,000. Reception was sketchy.
Naturally, topography and such makes a difference. Why is it so hard for AAR to find a new station in NYC?
I don’t know what station Schultz would be on here in Phx. He burned the one bridge he didn’t really have here.:rofl2:
Gotta go…………………………………:sdavid::pent::jesus::omg:
Don’t know, but I’m guessing… a lot of stations here are really big, like WCBS, WABC… they’re already loaded down with either news, dedicated to sports, or doing conservative talk. They’re not going to take on Air America.
:fu:Ed Schultz!:rofl2:
awww…well later, Nicki
If some AAR talker other than Franken was in the Talkers magazine’s top 15 they might put them on instead of Shultz.. Four time zones is about three to many for live programming.:rant1:
come back soon
I don’t know if Shultz will go over in NY. He’s very midwestern in attitude
Shultz was war mongering over this NK missile thing today. Vandenberg launches missiles all the time in the other direction.. (east to west) All the military satellites get launched from California. All the nervous centrist callers seemed to be from New Jersey.:yuck::fustrate:
I can’t bring myself to listen to him again…

Talk about over reaction :jason::jason::jason:
As Congressional Republicans dove in approval rating from 57% to 37% in May, some liberal Democrats wonder why their Party has not correspondingly leaped in opinion polls. One answer lies in Senator Hillary Clinton (NY), the Democrats’ high profiler. She and a few other presidential aspirants have accepted Karl Rove’s Orwellian axiom. By labeling irresponsible behavior as “responsible,” Bush spinners have disabled their opponents.
A mid June poll, for example, indicated that the public wants a withdrawal plan for Iraq. Bush calls this majority sentiment “irresponsible” and “cut and run” behavior when Democrats call for it. Leading Democratic candidates should scoff at such White House language. After all, they can point to Congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham, who went to prison for taking payoffs from Jack Abramoff. The Republican lobbyist also bought favors from other key Republicans, in return for fancy golf trips and other perks. Even supposedly conservative Republican voters see their Representatives irresponsibly violating tradition: encouraging the growth of debt and deficit.
Instead of convincing voters to turn toward them with a unified platform, including withdrawal from Iraq, Democrats face eternal division. Clinton, Joe Lieberman (D-CT) and Virginia Governor Mark Warner, for examples, fell into Rove’s “responsible” trap. They accept illogic: US military presence “stabilizes” rather than de-stabilizes. Facts stare at them. The US occupation of Iraq created chaos. The White House claims withdrawal rewards the enemy, although the US controlled Iraqi government has asked for a withdrawal by 2007 and the definition of “enemy” has become ambiguous. On June 20, the Pentagon admitted that Iraqi troops killed two of their own US trainers.
hillary…
The only New Rochelle station that I know of is this pathetic affair which features 175 year old Bill Mazur [remember him?] agreeing with elderly Jews ranting about how unfair everybody is being to Israel. For hours. The signal sucks, as does WLIB’s for that matter. How can there be a NY flagship for AAR with a crap signal? The only people who listen to AAR in NY are highly motivated people who make huge efforts to find it. Losing LIB is no great tragedy, provided that there’s a substitute. Where is it?
Are you really optimistic about AAR based solely on the fact that Randi signed a four year contract? With who, God? Still too many Searchdog and other public service spots in the morning for my comfort.
In most places liberal talk has succeeded more or less despite AAR. The stations in the west especially have some of the highest ratings in their areas. A lot of us can stream AAR.. I don’t know what the numbers are like now but in the beginning AAR had the largest number of streaming listeners ever.. Arbitron unfortunately doesn’t count the streaming listeners so investors see that AAR has 1.6 to 2.5 percent of the markets while Limpprick and Handjob have like 7 and 8 percent of the market.
As Susan has said New York City is not necessarily liberal threw and threw but the area in and around Boston and other major North east cities tend to be. Denver really needs a liberal talk station in Spanish with Mariachi music
I don’t know where AAR is going to end up in New York, but if it doesn’t find a home here I can’t imagine it would do well in general…maybe that’s just NY’er arrogance talking, but I mean, come on… AAR really needs to be in the big liberal bastions on either coast …it should be other places too, but I’m just saying …
:nixon:maybe maron can get a tv show and we can see jim dressed as the cardinal!
There are still enough liberals or dems or just curious people here that would listen to AAR if it was on a radio station with a strong signal. WLIB has a horrible signal and is on the dial next to some much stronger stations which interfere. And as I said earlier, I don’t know what major station would want Air America
I would love to see Marc have a comedy central show, say, following Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert…would that be perfect or what???
End of TMMS
:fu::fu::fu::fustrate::fustrate::fustrate::barf::barf::barf::omg::omg::omg::rant1::rant1::rant1:
Stations are after all corporations and they make money by broadcasting advertising.. AAR’s advertisers are for the most part the same snake oil salesmen that sponsor Limpprick and Handjob. I suppose they assume the audience listens to them. I have found them an applied use for the mute button. The more power the bigger the audience . the bigger the audience the higher the Arbitron numbers. The stations that have numbers in the 7’s and 9’s are not likely to switch to a format with numbers in the high 1’s and low 2’s
Well, the Drobneys and Dr. Mike Newcomb have a business plan to gain radio stations for AAR programing. I don’t think you could survive without physical radio stations, the web would have a hard time supporting a network at this time. And you’ll want radio stations when no one can afford to stream or has access to the net anymore anyways.:jason:
NBC fuckin’ sux:fu: They just did a story on Ken Lay and they were so sympathetic to him it was disgusting! Man!~ I AM getting riled now!:fu:

So, now NBC is talking about hair dye causing cancer and haven’t said word 1 about Iraq or North Korea. AAAAgghhhtt!:fustrate: Now I know how you feel Fred.
and msnbc just pissed me off – keith O’s political analyst O’Donnell just said that joe wilson claimed in his op-ed that cheney sent him to Niger. That’s a GOP talking point. Wilson NEVER claimed that. :fu:

I usually don’t watch tv news. Tv is only good for reruns and PBS if you don’t have cable. I’m back to the reruns now.
The bad news is, I’m back in DC. The good news is that I set a new record – 5 hours and 57 minutes. Also, I had the foresight to bring a 12-pack of Molson XXX on ice with me (can’t get that here). Now, I’ll have to go see what y’all have been talking about.
glad you made it there safe & sound PJ. :gate:
Holy crap, it looks like we’re gonna hit 400:omg:
EEEEEKKKKK…..
Well, I think that offering Marc a bigger and better show is in order and it looks like thats what he did.
Of course, Marc has taken to radio and really loves this stuff, so he wants it bad….but of course they want him in NYC….ugh!
I do think that he had more of an edge in NYC…I do think that Randi said that they were making a new morning show and that the howard stern question needs to be answered…as in “what are we offering that demographic for morining drive time?”….and….
Its all so difficult because it may mean that Marc’s life will be in upheaval again.
But listen, is Marc didnt take w3hatever on AAR, he would be back to travelling round doing stand up. They are not only in LA but are on the road all the time…same thing with movies and TV shows, depending on the network. TDS and Colbert are in NYC…
I like the idea of him back in NYC because I think her was better here. There is just so much more to work off of for him waling round the neighborhoods and being in the cradle of the main office and flagship, such as it is.
Ill have to ask Mom about WLIB. They did sell the time to AAR and the contract is expiring. They do black shows at night and part of the weekend and some of them are excellent. Its always been a liberal station. They probably can get another station…hopefully with more horsepower because I lose it at night and its iffy in the car in certain places.
But, Mom is the one who knows whats going on with all the local talk radio because she listens to all of it all day every day….she also goes to sleep at 8:30-ish, so I cant ask till tomorrow….
Hopefully Marc will have told us by then what he wants to do.
I think that being in NYC, even if its away from Mishna, is at least more stable than going back on the road or out to location all the time…and NYC has a really great little comedy scene happening right now.
Its up to him but I will miss him horribly if he leaves the airwaves…he is so truly great at this, and it something that he coudl probably happily do forever sucessfully if he can get through this bumpy patch.
When is Riley’s contract up? I hope to god that they dont try to pair them again…but would hope that he would make pashman and brendan a part of the deal if hes coming east!!…and Jim too!
Not Kent’s job…its too small a role. He would never take that. They are gonna give him 3 hours in prime time…either mornings or al’s slot.
Just my opinion!
Washington, DC – The credibility of Mexico’s electoral process was thrown into question on Tuesday morning when the head of Mexico’s Federal Electoral Institute (IFE), Luis Carlos Ugalde, acknowledged that as many as 4 million votes had not been counted in the preliminary vote count that began after the polls closed on Sunday.
Sound familiar, Chad?
What a friggin beautiful day it’s been here today. It rained some this morning and then stayed cloudy and COOL til around 2 and since it didn’t get too hot it’s really nice out right now.:peace:
I don’t know Melina, They promised Marc a syndicated show that at first was live, then taped, never syndicated and now? Zilch. I think AAR is going to screw Marc and us. 😡
Alright now, we won’t get to 400 at this rate. Just a few more, folks.
I can’t believe they’re killing the Marc Show in just, what, 8 more shows? It just aint right. After all the dicking around, and waiting for the show, and deling with the Clippers, and trying stay up ’til all hours or record the stream or whatever, and they do this?
I just started to be able to listen to a couple of AAR shows again. Now this. Have I mentioned how much I hate these people?
I hope the stream works tonight in case The Maron has any news. By the way, the other Maron blog barely has 200, we rock!! …I’m just sayin is all. :fire:
As an aside, Opera 9 totally kicks ass!
No doubt Marc’s blog will crank when the show starts.
10 more to go :sheep:ple
Alright, the KTLK stream appears to be down. :smack:
9 more.
:billcat::billcat::billcat:
What about the cats? Will they stay in LA?
And what about:sammy:?
:fustrate:
I just feel like watching crap TV:knit:

Well we won’t find out about the cats unless KTLK can setup a stable streaming server. :fustrate:
Who will be number 400?
Hmmm I wonder…
What’s the record?
Maybe me? Maybe not. Go ahead sblue make your move.
who’s lurking?
I think it’s me
Alas, it wasn’t
:smack:
Now that that’s over, still no stream!! 90 minutes to go. :holla:
405- hey!!
They had to offer him something better. its just a matter of what he wants to do.
You should’ve been here for the showdown Melina, it was close but sblue’s reflexes were just a little faster.
I’m listening to some old Lawton thanks to the other Patrick-
Lawton with mouse ears.
Stinton wouldnt say “delighted” to us unless he meant it.
He knows what we want…heaven knows Ive practically blown his balckberry up with my long mails explaining it all to him…heh…
Did anyone see the marathon last night of Dirty Jobs. Will loves that show.
There was a guy who is a baby chick sexer. They squeeze them and shoot their poop into a bucket and then look insidw a little flap to see if they have a bump or a flat…very funny…gross…
and collecting hog sperm then artificially inseminating a female….
At least they didnt show the horse thing…they showed only part of it but not the really bad part.
Unbelievable the jobs people do out there.
Im wondering if I can squeeze the carp out of my birds a few times a day to avoid those nasty mistakes.
Ive got to download the rest of that stuff from snotgreensea….
You can squeeze a carp out of ’em?
Hee hee:lol:
Melina best of luck with Will- How is your eye today?
I hope you are relaxing.
Is Stinton one of the exec’s?
Ok – going to watch some crappy TV now and :knit::knit2:
Still no stream and I’ve got to get some sleep. Please someone let us know what Marc says tonight if anything.
G’night
eye is worse…am going to the eye dr tomorrow.
I dont think there is much to do. Its just scary. I might put a picture of it up on my blog just for fun and to try to get ideas of what to do.
If arnica helps bruises and this is a sort of bruise but under clear “skin” as the emergency room Doc said, then maybe arnica eye drops…?
I have to do some searches and/or talk to some herbalists.
Maybe the dr will give me some cortisone drops or something to stop it from spreading and hurting.
I keep saying that my eye just exploded or imploded…that what it feels like and thats sorta what it looks like. Today it feels like there is a hole right into my brain.
Yes, Stinton is one of the execs…he has been on marcs side throughout, as have the drobnys…but they were unable to do much because goldfuck wanted to run programming and thought it should be retooled minus marc.
Now that hes gone stinton said that they are busy trying to repair the damage done.
Lets hope…
great Colbert rerun on!
I need to see the olberman rerun tomorrow at 9….
Ok…nite nite geniuses….
Ive got to get to bed before south park makes me blow another eye!
This Tony Snow thing is incredible…maybe will go get in bed and do some research and reading on this and kenny boy….
its so tragic…like brokeback mountain….just too late for kenny and W….the cruel hand of fate quit Kenny before Bushie could tell he how he felt!!
I’ve got nothing to say about AAR’s treatment of Marc that hasn’t been said or felt except to say :mad::mad::growl::growl::growl::fu::fu::jason::jason: GDmn, I get tired of nothing ever going our way between Lay going to a premature but deserved hell and that Bush is going to pardon everybody involved in destroying this country before he leaves (if he ever leaves)
I can only hope that AAR finds a way to make Marc happy and give the us some lasting satisfaction.:om:
