At the risk of sounding simplistic, this shit is bad.
I certainly hope the rest of the world can put an end to this, since the US seems both unwilling and powerless to do anything about it. I guess it’s up to “old” Europe and the grownups to do something. At this point, I think we can only hope that Bush, Condi, Cheney, Rummy, the worthless and cowardly Republicans & Democrats, and the rest of this pathetic government of ours stay the hell out of things, unless they’re willing to muster up a little courage and tell the Israelis to stand down.
As others here have remarked, the ususal suspects, Kos, Atrios, DU, etc., seem to be remakably silent on the subject. Kos had a post about how he “grew up in a war zone” (he was born in Chicago in 1971, but was raised in El Salvador until he was nine or so, when the family came back to the US in 1980), and learned that until “both sides” decide to stop killing each other it will never end. As true as that may be, I’m not sure what that’s got to do with killing innocent Lebanese men, women, and children, and targeting Lebanon’s civilian infrastructure; whether or not you agree that Israel is entitled to go after Hezbollah, the attacks on Lebanon seem far from justified. But then, I’m not as worldly as he is. Kos also links to a post from Kevin Drum, who discusses why he doesn’t write about an active war in the Middle East (something about the Israeli/Palestinian conflict being 50 years old and very complex (presumably we’re all too stupid to understand it, and he doesn’t have the patience to ‘splain it to us), and besides it makes for a whole bunch of meanie comments.
The one exception seems to be Juan Cole, who, typically, continues to be unafraid to write intelligently about what’s going on, and how pathetic our government continues to be. And of course there are the alternative news sites, like Counterpunch, Truthout, Democray Now! and others (I won’t list them all – if you’re reading this, I’m sure you know who there are, and if not, I’m sure there will be lots of copying and pasting of articles from those sources and others).
I just find it kind of sad that our well known “liberal” bloggers seem to be afraid or unwilling to discuss the issue. To be sure, it would take a certain amount of guts, as there are certain elements who will brand anyone who disagrees with what the Israeli government is doing as “anti-semitic” – just as some will brand anyone who criticizes the Bush administration as “anti-American” (even treasonous). And of course there are plenty of people who would excuse anything that Hezbollah might do, too. Personally, I think it’s time to stop rationalizing terrorist behavior, no matter who the perpetrators are. Right’s right, and wrong’s wrong, whether it’s in Baghdad, Darfur, South Dakota, Beirut, Gaza, or Haifa.
One thing’s for certain, if things continue to escalate, this will only turn out very badly, and $4/gallon gas will be the least of our worries. And even if disaster is somehow averted this time around, unless the entire world insists on some form of justice that all sides can agree to and live with (and I have to think that a big part of that would getting the US the hell out of the region), the fire will only continue to smolder until the next crisis.
Then maybe we can get back to ignoring all of the other unspeakable (but not quite as dangerous on a global scale) horrors that exist in the world, and wait for global warming or that killer asteroid to hit the reset button on the human race, and see if evolution can’t do a better job next time.

Morning.
I do think the pro-Israel lobbies have silenced the dialogue in this country. Wasn’t it Ivins who said we shouldn’t be afraid to discuss the problem? To be sure Ahmadinejad is a crazy guy. Bush is nuts and Olmert seems to fit right in with the pack. With those three at the helm, I am very uncomfortable with the present situation. I personally am not against Israel. However, Israel has the power and has set the policies that have helped create this nightmare. I can not ignore that anymore than I can ignore that it is our policies that helped create a Mexican immigration problem in the U.S.

Nah, it’s still here. At least my corner of it is. That could change any day, though. Especially since the Repigs are running around shouting about World War III and the Chimp in Chief seems disinclined to do anything about it other than point his finger at any party not named Israel.
See, this is one of the many reasons I fell into atheism. If there actually was a god, he would have the wisdom to tell these people to stop killing each other over the only part of the Middle East that has no oil.
Listen to this. Now I’m telling a god I don’t believe in what to do. That’s just silly… everyone knows that advising god is Oprah’s job.

But Krista, it’s good to know that you’ll wake me if anything important starts up. Thanx for having my back.
Now, I need a bit of advice. There are basically 2 Dems running for Govenor here and I need to vote for one, or do I?
Biggest problem is both support the anti-gay marriage amendment. I feel that this is a fundamental civil rights issue just as it is my right for self-determination and control over my womb.
Taylor is supported by Andrew Young which is a pretty good endorsement. Cox has some innovative ideas. Taylor’s health care reform is closer to what I want. Cox seems to just want to smear the shit that’s already here. The other big thing against Cox is she is the one that put these damn freaking electronic voting machines in with NO paper trail….I’m thinking of NOT voting for her because of that. But then….do I vote for someone who is against civil rights for all?

McCarley is probably who I could vote for…a Vet and I think he’s pro-gay rights…from a debate I read about BUT i can’t even find a web page for him so have to sit through to find his talking points. Ok, guess I’ll vote for him.
according to http://www.mygagov.com/ my vote should be to Taylor – is it his test?????
i doesn’t take much to make Bolton look like a lunatic.. Just let him speak and its obvious..:shock::yuck:
According to this page:
Is this gonna be a close race, FK, or does the chicken man have it locked up?
Welcome, Sue P., and thanks for the link. I would HOPE, but have no confidence, that AAR will know what to do with such an influx of money. 🙄
I keep having a feeling that Marc is going to end up getting the evening show. It’s probably just wishful thinking, because I also keep getting a feeling that Marc is thinking right now that he gave his heart and soul to AAR and they screwed him, and if that’s the nature of radio, well, fuck it — who needs that shit.:rant1:
But Janeane was supposed to sub for Sam this week, and she couldn’t even make it on Monday :fustrate:, so Thom Hartmann is subbing for HER. If Sam leaves, that will leave a HUGE void in a BIG time slot — and it would be PERFECT for Marc. 7-10 PM Eastern Time is 4-7 PM Pacific time, which would let Marc do a show every night and still be able to do stand-up.
I really wish we knew what his mindset is at the moment. My guess is that he’s probably right now simultaneously flattered, weirded out, and contemptuous of us. Flattered because his work was so important to us, weirded out because it probably feels a bit stalkerish, and contemptuous because we really need to get a life already. 😮
Right now I am listening to the 10/31/05 Morning Sedition, and thinking that I am DEFINITELY #3. :omg:
:yuck::fustrate:Senators initiate resolution supporting Israel, condemning Hezbollah
WASHINGTON – The Senate is likely to pass a resolution, as early as Tuesday, condemning Hezbollah and expressing support of Israel’s actions in Lebanon.
According to the resolution, the Senate “supports Israel’s right of self defense and Israel’s right to take appropriate action to deter aggression… calls for immediate and unconditional release of Israeli soldiers… condemns the governments of Iran and Syria … responsible for the acts of aggression carried out by Hezbollah and Hamas against Israel…”
The Senate resolution urges the President to use all “political and diplomatic means” including sanctions to help end the support by Iran and Syria to Hezbollah and Hamas, and calls upon the Lebanese government to fulfill its responsibility to disarm Hezbollah.
The resolution also urges the UN to demand compliance with Security Council resolution 1559, and to condemn the “unprovoked acts” of Hezbollah.

Farmerkat, Re 10 I am having a bit of a debate with hubby regarding this voting crisis. My vote is to Vote for Taylor, with a :growl: letter telling what is wrong with him. It is so horrible, but I have to “suck it up” regarding Dems, since ANYONE else could be a win for the rethugs. That would be the ultimate worse, is to “dream” that there would be AT THIS TIME any other way. Look at having DI FI (Diane OrgreStein) in California.
One of the more interesting races in NY is the Democratic primary for Attorney General. Somehow (and I’m not quite sure how), a long time ago, I got on the Sean Patrick Maloney e-mail list. Since he has such a fine Irish name that my mother would have adored, I figured, what the hell, I’ll learn more about him. I only recently learned that he’s openly gay, which would make him a very interesting AG. In NY, the NYS Supreme Court (which, in typical NYS fashion, isn’t the highest court – the NYS Court of Appeals is) has already said gay people have as much right to marry as anybody else. The current AG (and next Governor), Eliot Spitzer, is pro gay rights, but has said gay marriage has to go through the courts. So, I think Maloney would make for a very interesting AG (and he has enough other qualities – aside from being Irish – to get my vote).
welcome sue!
thanks pj for that tidbit. (and druid!)
well, taylor probably has a better shot at beating the chicken guy – they’re both fat, btw. Cox has a lot of rethugs behind her and is “cleaner” than taylor. but GA politics are nasty. McCarley doesn’t have a snow’s chance in hell.
Greetings Sue 😉
And to any nice Lurers who work “grave” :spank::wink:
The Democracy Alliance seems careful about whom they give their money to. perhaps that means that AAR will have to get its act together and, hopefully, it will survive. For all its meandering and missteps it is still a very important counter voice to (insert rightwing source here).

WASHINGTON (AFP) – A Washington-area gang behind a string of bank robberies reportedly used AK-47 assault rifles that a former US soldier had smuggled from Iraq, investigators said.
The Washington Post said that an FBI spokesman at the Baltimore field office confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was on the case.
“We were asked to look into it even though there is no formal investigation,” he told AFP.
The string of hold-ups in 2004 was notable for the overwhelming firepower used by the gangsters, eight of whom were later questioned, including two who became government witnesses, the Post reported Sunday.

In 1948, the Palestinians opted for a very low intensity conflict when the UN imposed on them a deal which wrested from their hand half of their homeland and gave it to a community of newcomers and settlers, most of whom arrived after 1945. The Zionist leaders waited for long time for that opportunity and launched an ethnic cleansing operation that expelled half of the land’s native population, destroyed half of its villages and dragged the Arab world into unnecessary conflict with the West, whose powers were already on the way out with the demise of colonialism. The two designs are interconnected: the wider Israel’s military might expands, the easier it is to complete the unfinished business of the 1948: the total de-Arabization of Palestine.
It is not too late to stop the Israeli designs from creating a new and terrible reality on the ground. But the window of opportunity is very narrow and the world needs to take action before it is too late.

NickiRose, I’m curious….what do YOU think should happen to Israel? I’m getting a sense that you want to see it dismantled. Am I understanding correctly? If so, how would you go about it?
IDF says army leveling 1km of territory inside south Lebanon
A senior Israel Defense Forces officer told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Monday that IDF troops had leveled land inside Lebanese territory extending up to one kilometer from Israel’s northern frontier.
The objective is to prevent the reestablishment of Hezbollah guerilla posts along Israel’s border.
Earlier Monday, Defense Minister Amir Peretz said that Israel intends to create an unmanned buffer zone in south Lebanon, from where Hezbollah has been pounding Israel with rockets for the past six days.
IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz told the committee that Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah has been in an underground bunker since the start of Israeli air strikes targeting the group’s stronghold in Beirut.

Shouldn’t it be coordinated so everybody’s on one side or the other? I mean, if the 600 mill are spread evenly, wouldn’t we just cancel each other out? Seems like everybody ought to be more or less on one side or the other (depending on what direction we want to go).
My sister, for many years, thought that song said “Maxwell jump.” She couldn’t figure out who Maxwell was (unless he was the one with the silver hammer, I guess), and why he should jump.

US warships head for Lebanon, thousands flee bombing
Tue Jul 18, 2006 9:53am ET
By Alaa Shahine
BEIRUT (Reuters) – The United States ordered five warships to head for Lebanon on Tuesday in its first major evacuation of Americans as thousands of foreigners packed their bags to flee Israeli air strikes pounding the country.
The U.S. navy said three amphibious ship, a helicopter carrier and a dock landing ship would be involved.
A cruise ship commissioned by the United States, that can carry up to 1,000 people, left Cyprus earlier on Tuesday and headed to the Lebanese coast. Some of the 8,000 Americans registered as living in Lebanon were expected to board the vessel later in the day, a diplomatic source in Nicosia said.
Britain said two aircraft carriers were among six of its ships in the region ready to start rescuing its citizens from the violence.

I hope no one starts shooting at something or this rescue mission migh turn into the largest navel engagement in history.:shock:
Better to get the hefty jumpers, too. I wonder if Jim Earl knows he’s too damn skinny to stop global warming? But then, maybe the skinny people could get more altitude when they jump, so would have a greater effect when hitting the ground. But then, the force of everybody pushing off the earth might shove everything, and then the force of landing would give it all another shove. So there’d be a double shove. I think precise coordination is the key, here. Maybe we could all kinda do the wave.
Also, it didn’t make it clear that you need to jump on the ground. If I were to jump in my house I would just succeed in making a vase fall off the shelf. Whiich is something that has happened.

Wichita, KS (LifeNews.com) — In years past, when pro-life advocates were opposed to having an abortion center in their town, they normally looked to protests, legislation or zoning board requirements to help them place restrictions on abortion centers or make it difficult for them to do business. Now they’re trying a more direct tactic — buying them.
Abortion business have been purchased in states such as Kansas, Florida, Tennessee and Nebraska.
In one of the first cases the Pro-Life Majority Coalition of Chattanooga outbid a Tennessee abortion business for the right to own a local facility that had long been the sole place in town where abortions were done.
The buying of the building forced the abortion center to close and the site now houses the National Memorial for the Unborn, a memorial for all of the babies who died at the abortion center over the years.

Sounds just like AAR .. Hopefully a bunch of yuppie 20 something women with torches and pitchforks will have a long conversation with them.:rant1::eek::shock::yuck:
Fred, be gentle. Schultz’s wife is good people. And his dog is cute. So wait til they’re both out of the house before shelling, k?
A fundy church bought the entire block in Vancouver, WA where a metaphysical bookstore was located a few years ago. Broke the bookstore’s lease and sent them out of business. I think they’ve had this particular technique figured out for a while. Amazing how long it took them to connect it to abortion clinics.
Buncha maroons selling to them, too!
Hey Kat, in GA the lt gov candidates run separately, as opposed to being someone’s running mate, correct? I ask because I am hoping the good voters of GA will tell Ralph “Taking Bribes For Jesus” Reed to politically curl up and die.
:fu:
hey sheeple, Here is my 2 cents: Brilliant at Breakfast, your musings on Marc Maron’s attitudes concerning the bloggers made me LAUGH er..:D and Laugh:bow:. I emailed him once and felt like the hugest stalker. You know when he always wonders how people find the time to do all the crap they do on their computors? He’s probably talking about these blogs. Also, about Sam Seder. I have a giant crush on him (stalker) and would miss him terribly. I love it when he rips right wingers a new one when they are stupid enough to call him.:spank: Druid, I live way up north in Nor cal too. :fist:Where are you? Brilliant@, I just read your take on the three things you expect are going through Marc’s mind. I could tell on the last night of the show that he was having some questions about all of us. In the past when someone from the blog has called he’s been enthused to hear from us, only rushing us off the phone for commercial breaks or if one of us (I’m as guilty as many others) ran off at the mouth. On Friday it was like he raced everyone off the phone. Yeah, he had a lot of interviews to get through (and I think Hackett was bugging him…) but it just felt like he was trying to stay away from us. Jim, too, sounded strange about it. (Okay, that might be personal from me because you’d think Jim would remember who Gypsy is, wouldn’t you? But it sounded to me like he had no idea who I was when I called…)
I think they were in a really strange place in San Diego.
It was the last show and they didn’t want to get too emotional.
And maybe mostly strangers in the audience.
It would be a whole other thing if real fans were able to get there.
I think it must have been very surreal for both of them.
Also not to metion the final blow of a Squeaker’s game:smack:
I know for a fact they love you gypsy!
gypsy, but don’t you remember Jim was star struck when you called that time. I think honestly that Marc didn’t want to get choked up talking to the bloggers. That’s just my take though.:D
Oh, I’m sure Jim remembers me and I’m sure the live audience had a lot to do with it. It just felt weird when they talked to everyone. Like, King Kong, whom they knew was calling in from Asia (Taiwan, right? Or has my brain really fried?) Marc sounded almost like he didn’t know who KKong was. I’m not saying they didn’t remember, I’m just saying they were in some sort of shock and there was considerable discomfort. It was a weird situation all around.
And I’m sure Marc (Jim to a lesser extent) is a little freaked out about the amount of devotion many of us are displaying. (I think I’m the first candidate for stalker, what with the “baby brother I never had” thing.) Few if any stand-up comedians develop this kind of a following without being in movies or on TV and getting lots of publicity. I suspect he’s a little intimidated.
I think honestly that Marc didn’t want to get choked up talking to the bloggers. That’s just my take though.:D

That makes sense. Remember the final MS? Marc wasn’t the only one who got choked up that day. I’m sure anyone who walked past my cube during the final half hour wondered what the hell my problem was. 😆
Hey, um, Sbluefox is the coolest person in the world!:knit: Just sayin’.
I think she’s pissed at me though, ’cause I made her late for her dad’s birthday party.:smack:
No way I’m pissed Travis- I was proud to be the late one for once!
The food poisoning came the next day however…
Or was it the Maronless Monday Blues?
Did you find Mr Miata?
:knit2:
Isn’t Marc supposed to be on the Majority Report tonight?
Yeah, Bill was in his room when I showed up.
Thanks for the Ipod full of Maron shows and the FUBAR book. Super cool!
I’m not sure about Maron being on the MR tonight, though. Is that the case?
Um, I think I’ll save the minutes I have left on the computer for later tonight, and in the mean time I’ll go prepare for the Apocalypse or something
Glad things went ok with Bill- we should have left a note on his window.
Maron was supposed to be on tonight- but Jeanene isn’t going to be on and it was to be her sendoff show.
Folks are not so pleasant over at the MR blog.
I have some errands to do- post office so be seeing you.
Call if you want to..

Does that mean I’ll be able to access the Majority Report tomorrow to hear marc? Is anyone else copying it?
That explains why, when I cancelled, it said I was cancelling a Gold Pass. Ah, well, I’m not using it and it’s going to let me go til the end of the month so it’s all good….
I will miss Steve Earl’s show but I’ll live.
Doesn’t sound like Air America is wanting to give money refunds. Wonder why?

“The Insane Brutality of the State of Israel”
Israel’s Shameful attack on Gaza
By MIKE WHITNEY
“We are sure that Israel is using a new chemical or radioactive weapon in their operation…When we try to X-ray dead bodies, we find no trace of shrapnel that hit the person killed.” Dr. al-Saqqa, Shifa hospital, Gaza; following the examination of the “completely burnt” bodies of dead Palestinians killed in Israeli air raid.
Question: How many editorials or op-ed columns have appeared in American newspapers defending the rights of Palestinian civilians to live in peace without the constant threat of being invaded or shelled by the world’s forth largest military?
None.
How many editorials or op-ed columnists have defended the Geneva Conventions or international laws against collective punishment, the willful destruction of critical infrastructure, or military maneuvers that deliberately put civilians in imminent danger?
None.
Then how many editorials or op-ed columnists have presented the recent flurry of events (including the capture of Israeli soldier Galid Shalit) in the broader context of Israel’s ongoing boycott of food and medical supplies, as well as the 50 or so Palestinian civilians who have been killed in Israel’s regular incitements in the occupied territories?
None.
The account of Palestinian suffering and victim-hood rarely finds its way into the mainstream press, but in the present case, it has been completely ignored. In fact, none of the media provide any context for the current invasion at all. Israel’s blockade of food and lethal provocations have been going on for months, and yet, the accounts from Gaza would have the reader believe that history began on the day that the Israeli soldier was captured…

I think I’m overdue to share a recipe. This is what I’m craving for tonight.
Edamame and Corn Salad

2 medium tomatoes, diced
4 green onions, sliced
1-2 cloves of garlic, minced
1 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
2 tablespoons olive oil
salt and pepper to taste
Mix all ingredients in medium bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour for flavors to blend.

4:20 p.m.: President Bush said he suspects Syria is trying to reassert influence in Lebanon. “It’s in our interest for Syria to stay out of Lebanon and for this government to survive,” Bush said in a reference to the young Lebanese government. Bush spoke after briefing members of Congress about his recent trip to Russia for the G-8 summit, which was overshadowed by warfare between Hezbollah and Israel. “The root cause of the problem is Hezbollah and that problem needs to addressed,” Bush said. He said there are suspicions that the instability will cause some in Lebanon to invite Syria back into the nation. “Syria’s trying to get back into Lebanon, it looks like, seems to me,” Bush said. Transcript.

What is he talking about ?? Syria saved Lebanon from itself during its civil war ( when the Marines got blown up) . I don’t think they have ever been “out” of Lebanon since then ..

Fred, was that an email from Dirkx? Wow!
I’ve decided that the construction on the roof of my building is as good an excuse as any to turn off Ed Schultz. Sadly, it also means I can’t listen to Randi. I can take her for about an hour and a half and that’s all I get while in the office so it works out.
From the WSJ link
Lebanese Prime Minister Siniora told the New York Times that the abducted Israeli soldiers could be released and the Lebanese army moved to the south of the country if Israel meets certain conditions. Siniora said the conditions include Israel’s withdrawal from the disputed Shebaa Farms area of the border, the release of Lebanese detainees in Israeli jails and a return to the terms of the 1949 armistice between the two countries, the Times reported. He suggested that the Lebanese army would move to southern Lebanon – an Israeli demand — once these conditions were met. He backed the idea of a more robust international force, but only after “all the issues” were put on the table, and he stopped short of condemning Hezbollah, the newspaper said.

The storm over evacuation charges continued. U.S. House Democratic Leader Pelosi said that Americans shouldn’t have to pay to be evacuated from Lebanon. To get on board ships headed for Cyprus, Americans must sign a note pledging to reimburse the U.S. government. They will be charged the price of a flight from Beirut to Cyprus – usually about $150 or $200, although officials refused to specify. The White House defended the charges. White House spokesman Tony Snow said the government had to charge evacuees because of a 2003 law. “I dare say that it’s something that is causing heartburn for a number of people, but it’s the law,” he said.

Only during a rethug admin does c* like this happen..
:rant1::rant1::rant1:
The Israelis have developed “sound machines” that emit ear-piercing explosions that have been deployed in Gaza City to shatter windows, cause miscarriages, and send children into deep trauma. It is a “terror device” pure and simple; it has no other function except to produce massive fear and anxiety. It is the latest weapon in the prodigious arsenal of the “world’s most moral army” (Olmert quote)
What did Ed Schultz sayabout the current Middle east conflict was so out of bounds? I did not hear him, but he probably doesn’t stray too far from, say, Hilary Clinton’s talking points on the subject. I remember liberal Patty Murray’s position in 1992. It was in many ways to the right of Bush the first’s policy.
barbaric….let the right wing dems gloss over this latest torture tactic
Ed is full of the 1980’s Reich talking points on the middle east where the palestinians were the aggressors in the 1967 war ( which they were not). that they hate the US for its freedom or some such c*.. The issue of the Israeli expansionism never has surfaced in the c* he spews. Most of his listeners are as stupid as he is .. its not a good idea to continue to reinforce the lies. :yuck::barf::rant1:
I am still traumatized from having to endure as a toddler the piercing elementary school fire-alarm siren, that used to shriek periodically, in my neighborhood. Oh, the children in Gaza. Oh the people having to endure this.
well this is country where torture is often justified, so I’m sure it won’t be generally acknowledged that what you just described is a form of torture also
Ahmadinejad promises Muslims will ‘rejoice’ soon
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday promised a “rejoicing” for Muslims in the Middle East “soon,” the Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
Speaking to university officials in the town of Mashhad, Ahmadinejad said the “volcano of rage” at the “arrogant powers” was “on the verge of eruption.”
Referring to escalating violence in Lebanon and northern Israel, he was quoted as saying, “The Zionists themselves have realized that they have launched a risky move and are aware that the flame of the fury of the regional states will set them ablaze.”

========================================
Ok what does he know that no one else seems to know..
:?::?::?::?:
Oh, he is hack. But still, I’ll bet a lot of democrats still chew that propaganda. From what I have been piecing together, the direction in the Middle East peace movement will have to concentrate towards ending Israel’s policy of apartheid, and away from the 2 state settlement solution. The reasons why should be obvious.
For those who haven’t gotten it yet, an e-mail from Marc:
 Hey, for you SF and NY folks Marc has some upcoming gigs your way!
Ahmedinejad is a mad man. Why do you quote him to support your position. Lots of people in the Middle East still talk the “wipe away the Zionists” line.
Move towards the one state, democratic solution for Palestinian. Two peoples, one shared culture. Legalize the Israeli settlements by sharing them with the Palestinians. Edward Said wrote a very good piece on this question.
I gotta tell you, the reich wing support for Israel in this verges on anti-semitic. No, that’s not a contradiction.
My Repig neighbor defends Israel vehemently. He pointed out that, “Those people have been kicked around, shit on, and murdered for centuries. It’s good to know they finally have the balls to fight back.” I said that I didn’t think it was right, just because the Jews have been mistreated for centuries doesn’t excuse them turning around and doing it to other peoples. He said, “Now, come on, imagine you ARE one of those people, kicked and slapped around for centuries….” And I said, “I AM one of those people. And I say that doing it in response to previous mistreatment doesn’t make it right.” He was completely quiet, then changed the subject to argue about Hilary (he still insists I’m secretly supporting her and lying just to annoy the hell out of him.) And he said, “Well, aren’t all the Jews supporting a weak stance in the Mideast, signing over the rights to the holy sites, and all that, just because they can’t stand up for themselves like they did in the Bible?”
:doh::doh::doh:
So the demand to return is not abstract. It’s not only a metaphor. Do you really
mean it?
“Yes. It’s a real problem, and a real attachment for real people. That’s what it
has been all along. A lot of Israelis say, well, in that case, that’s the
destruction of the State of Israel. But I don’t see it like that at all.
“The refugee problem is the most difficult to solve, because it involves moral
questions of expulsion. But I think Israel must acknowledge the plight of the
refugees. And I think the refugees must have a right to return. I’m not sure how
many will want to return, but I think they should be entitled to return.
“Studies have been written that address feasibility and what I can only call
decency regarding this issue. How you can accomplish it with the least harm.
Without literally throwing people off land they cultivated. According to these
studies, you could quite easily settle a million people in present-day Israel
with a minimal disruption. I think this could be a beginning. A good point to
discuss and converse about. Of course, it must be a regulated return. Not just
anyone getting on a boat and coming back.”
Edward Said

I also have a tshirt that says “jesus is a liberal” which pisses dumbasses off. This one was all “jesus is god” and I’m all “good, that means god is a liberal” whatever.
Ahmedinejad is not a mad man. He is a skilled Muslim politician who speaks what the majority of his followers want to hear. That may not be what the majority of Iran wants to hear but he’s their George Bush .. The Muslims in general feel very repressed so they will follow people like him just like the “Good Germans” followed Hitler and the ‘Good Americans” are following ( or at least are not doing anything about) Bush. When the two finally meet Lets hope Putin or HU forces some restraint or at least doe not side with the Iranian president.
Read PJ’s opening statement. Now I know why I could never stand KOS. What a gucking weasel! Both sides stand down first.
As far as the US and Israel: As long as the US uses its Security Council veto to keep Israel from sanctions, there is not much that European governments can do. It is up to the peace and justice movement in this country to organize and pressure our government to change. Otherwise, there will continue to be wars and terrorism and civillians who must suffer.

I flipped back to AAR and heard the ininimitable Michael from the Bronx!
(Sam referred to him as “Sam”. Oh no. My NYC stereotype is showing. All of you Bronxers sound the same to this left coaster’s ears.)
Yeah, set up a Maronite chuch over there. Marc Maron could bring peace to the Middle East. He’ll have everyone sit down at his confessional and give them penance if they don’t behave (we can get Riley in on it, too, they came up with some good ones for Liberal confessional)
I am talking to myself. Goodbye!
:sdavid::pent:
:jesus:
Do I sound like Michael? I didn’t hear him.
No. When I said “The Holy Land,” I meant NYC. You know, the Holy Land.
You are from the Bronx? I thought you said the affluent Westchester region.

You MUST become on Marc’s team for so MANY REASONS and that is why I will write him (soon I hope) and SAY WHY:!:
I am taking Mr. Brilliant to see Maron in NYC on the weekend of August 25-26. Not sure which day yet, but we’ll be going to either the 8:30 PM show on Friday or the 8 PM show Saturday.
It doesn’t look like tix are not on sale yet, but I’ll keep my eyes open. Anyone interested in meeting up for a “bloggers table”? Or will that freak him out too much?
I’d love to see Marc in NYC that weekend, but I doubt we could swing it. From what KP said, he was very nice and pleased to see her when she went to see him.
Hey Druid, setting up a shoutcast server isn’t too hard. Just a matter of downloading the software and setting up your computer. Read the stuff at shoutcast, and do a search for shoutcast server setup (here’s a quick set of directions).
