Well, according to the MR blog last night, Sammy will have a “positive” announcement to make re: the fate of the Majority Report. So, I reckon it’s (finally) the boot for Springer, and Sam get’s the 9 – noon slot. Or maybe Springer will be on from 8 to 10 PM, after Rachel? Or a new show? And then there’s the morning slot, if there’s still gonna be an AAR morning show. I suppose we can still hold out a little hope (but probably not our breath) for Maron to pop up again, though I’m wondering if he might not be enjoying getting back to doing standup more than doing radio. Time will tell, I guess. Odds are whatever happens, we’ll hear about it from anywhere else but AAR first.

C-span has a discussion of the NO disaster and what was and wasn’t done and they are saying how bad things were in NO before the disaster and that they doubt the city can recover..
What they see as bad before the disaster exists in EVERY major US city .. Given the same magnitude of a disaster the same thing would happen in any major American city..
That’s the problem I see in all the reporting. The reporters sit in their air conditioned offices and read the WSJ or the New York Times or a government report and think everything is fine.. The people in the mean time are in a world of hurt and there is no one willing to do anything about it.

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) – The United States is headed for a recession that will be “much nastier, deeper and more protracted” than the 2001 recession, says Nouriel Roubini, president of Roubini Global Economics.
Writing on his blog on Wednesday, Roubini repeated his call that the U.S. would be in a recession in 2007, arguing that the collapse of housing will bring down the rest of the economy. Read more.
Roubini wrote after the National Association of Realtors reported Wednesday that sales of existing homes fell 4.1% in July, while inventories soared to a 13-year high and prices flattened out year-over-year
“This is the biggest housing slump in the last four or five decades: every housing indictor is in free fall, including now housing prices,” Roubini said. The decline in investment in the housing sector will exceed the drop in investment when the Nasdaq collapsed in 2000 and 2001, he said.
And the impact of the bursting of the bubble will affect every household in America, not just the few people who owned significant shares in technology companies during the dot-com boom, he said. Prices are falling even in the Midwest, which never experienced a bubble, “a scary signal” of how much pain the drop in household wealth could cause.

LAKEWOOD — A seventh-grade geography teacher at Carmody Middle School was suspended with pay today when he refused to take down three foreign flags on display in his classroom.
Eric Hamlin said the flags of China, Mexico and the United Nations were relevant to the unit on the fundamentals of geography he teaches during the first six weeks of the semester. He’s used the same display for most of the nine years he’s taught in Jefferson County, Hamlin said.
The foreign flags are in addition to the standard U.S. flag found in all classrooms.
Hamlin said principal John Schalk escorted him from the building Thursday before classes began. He was handed a letter saying the matter is under investigation and warning him to remain off school property.

The Dem gubernatorial debate last night was much more substantial than the Repig debate on Monday. Jim Davis and Rod Smith agree on most issues, but a certain amount of separation became apparent about halfway through.
Smith is generally acknowledged to be the better public speaker, but I thought Davis presented himself better last night. Smith was not able and/or willing to explain the million-dollar donation he received from Big Sugar (destroyers of the Everglades), or the attack ad they are running on his behalf.
Meanwhile, the best Smith could do was harp at Davis about his attendance record in Congress, which had actually been borderline outstanding prior to the start of the campaign, and a vote that Davis cast SIXTEEN YEARS AGO in the state legislature.
I’m not sure I can support a gubernatorial candidate who holds a grudge longer than an ex-wife. The Stones still play “Satisfaction” because people still want to hear it, not because they haven’t come up with anything else since 1964.
Add to this Davis’ excellent record on the environment, and I think we have a winner. They go at it again next Tuesday.

Regarding the rumor: I had/have a feeling the Young Turks were an “up and coming” show and might end up on Air America. They filled in for absentee hosts a couple of times and AA got good feedback, supposedly. Not my favorite show in the world, but it beats Stephanie Ditzbrain Miller and Schultz. Randi Rhodes has always been three hours’ long (at least in NY) so that would not be a change.
Hope it’s true that Sam and Mike Malloy are still in the lineup. BTW my brother’s wife is due to deliver her baby today (boy), and she’s set to name him Sam – I think that’s a good sign for Mr. Seder! (yes, it’s true, I’m a little odd in regards to seeing “signs” :omg:)

I haven’t listened to them in awhile… Cenk (the one who talks the most) describes himself as a “former conservative”but I’d say he’s now a centrist. He’s reasonably informed I’d say, though not as much as my favorite AA hosts…I can’t remember much about the other guy (I really need to listen to the show again). The woman, Jill, is pretty uninformed and ditzy but they keep her in the background most of the time. They do talk politics but also mix a lot of pop culture and “our dating/sex lives” stuff which, to me, is annoying (interestingly when Marc Maron did pop culture or personal stuff it was much funnier). If I’d have to describe Young Turks I’d say “mainstream centrist hip urban yuppies with mainstream sense of humor”.
The Young Turks are too conservative. Give me Springer any day.

Though there are many interacting factors, the immediate issue that lies behind the latest US-Israeli invasion of Lebanon remains, I believe, what it was in the four preceding invasions: the Israel-Palestine conflict. In the most important case, the devastating US-backed 1982 Israeli invasion was openly described in Israel as a war for the West Bank, undertaken to put an end to annoying PLO calls for a diplomatic settlement (with the secondary goal of imposing a client regime in Lebanon). There are numerous other illustrations. Despite the many differences in circumstances, the July 2006 invasion falls generally into the same pattern. Among mainstream American critics of Bush administration policies, the favored version is that “We had always approached [conflict between Israel and its neighbors] in a balanced way, assuming that we could be the catalyst for an agreement,” but Bush II regrettably abandoned that neutral stance, causing great problems for the United States (Middle East specialist and former diplomat Edward Walker, a leading moderate). The actual record is quite different: For over 30 years, Washington has unilaterally barred a peaceful political settlement, with only slight and brief deviations.
The consistent rejectionism can be traced back to the February 1971 Egyptian offer of a full peace treaty with Israel, in the terms of official US policy, offering nothing for the Palestinians. Israel understood that this peace offer would put an end to any security threat, but the government decided to reject security in favor of expansion, then mostly into northeastern Sinai. Washington supported Israel’s stand, adhering to Kissinger’s principle of “stalemate”: force, not diplomacy. It was only 8 years later, after a terrible war and great suffering, that Washington agreed to Egypt’s demand for withdrawal from its territory.
Meanwhile the Palestinian issue had entered the international agenda, and a broad international consensus had crystallized in favor of a two-state settlement on the pre-June 1967 border, perhaps with minor and mutual adjustments. In December 1975, the UN Security Council agreed to consider a resolution proposed by the Arab “confrontation states” with these provisions, also incorporating the basic wording of UN 242. The US vetoed the resolution. Israel’s reaction was to bomb Lebanon, killing over 50 people in Nabatiye, calling the attack “preventive” – presumably to “prevent” the UN session, which Israel boycotted.

Thank You
We recieved nearly 14,000 emails of support which I think had a big hand in keeping me on AAR. Thanks to the folks at the NET who generated thousands of emails from thier legions of activists. Thanks also to the dailykos and Atrios and Liberaloasis and crooksandliars and all the bloggers out there who helped spread the word.

That is what they call in the radio business a tease. Sorry, couldn’t help myself. I will be moving to the network 9a-12p slot starting sometime in mid september. They’re still working out the details of the launch.
Don’t know what the show will be called as of yet. There is desire form the network for me to call it the Sam Seder Program or show or something like that– supposedly it’s a branding issue or some other crap. I am not terribly comfortable naming a show after myself because it bores me in one sense and probably because of deep seeded psychological issues. But more specifically, I am very attatched to the name Majority Report. It’s what the first prototype of this show was called on one night in Feb. 2003 when Tom Scharpling gave me two hours on his Best Show on FMU. It has a two and a half year history which I shared with Janeane. Most importantly, I now associate it with you, our listeners and particularly our bloggers. So with all that said, we’ll see… but, and I bold this so there is no doubts this blog will remain.
We’re beginning to develop ideas for the new show- I don’t think it will be radically different and any new developments that we make we will roll in. That said I do have a couple of surprises in mind.
I will give more updates later, but now I am on vacation! Thanks again for all your support and I won’t let you guys down.

Actually, the fact that we take so many immigrants could keep us from having the problem of too many old people and not enough young people to take care of them. That is a problem that places like India and China will have because of how they have limited births to control their population the last 20 or 30 years. Plus the fact they don’t have such open immigration policies.
Plus, back at the beginning of MS, there were all these uptight, NPR “liberals” who hadn’t the fact that Marc was being funny and entertaining in the morning. The “professionally offended” bunch. They used to get him all wound up reading the blog, so he finally quit.

I dunno how many e-mails AAR got over MS, but I bet it was quite a few. There were over 6,000 people that signed the petition. Big problem was DG, who’d already made up his mind. I think all the support got the MMS on the air (too bad they had to go and kill it so quickly, though).
I didn’t say nobody, Nicki. The support that Marc got was intense but it was mostly limited to AAR listeners. It got a brief mention on one or 2 other blogs but Sam has gotten the support of the major blogs and I even got a petition emailed to me from The Pen. Sam’s support was more widespread because of his association with blogs.

I think Marc didn’t start to realize how many people out there really “got” what they were trying to do until they started to do the live shows. If your only feedback is from snotty e-mails and people that want you to be NPR or Amy Goodman all the time (and, let’s face it, those are the ones you tend to obsess over), then you don’t get a sense of how many people out there really like what you’re doing. Especially slackers, like, me, who never blogged because they were trying to get their asses out of bed and off to work in the morning.

I think the support for Marc was intense but it seems like Sam got more. Just because we spent most of our time and energy writing letters, postcards and emails doesn’t mean everyone else was. Also, Sam has been on the air longer, at this point, so he has had an opportunity to garner more listeners, not to mention the fact that MR is on at a more listenable time. MS and MMS were on at bad times for most people. I’m not saying that Marc didn’t get support. I’m saying Sam got more and one of the reasons is because he makes himself available on the blogs.
I don’t care for the Turds, though I did appreciate the Filibuster Alito marathon they did. But Crank (or Yank, whichever it was) poo-pooed my suggestion that people like Robert Byrd and Mary Landrieu were told, “look, if you make a stink on this, you’ll never see money for mine safety in WV, or reconstruction in NO.”
And yes, PJ, most definitely DG had his sites on MS. I don’t know that the blogs could have saved MS because of that.
Well, and Sam did get more support from non-AAR related blogs (Kos, Atrios, Liberal Oasis). I think a lot of that was due to the fact that MS was on too early for a lot of people. I tell ya, when Sam mentioned the Save MS petition on the air, we’d get hundreds of signatures in an hour. Too bad some of the rest of the hosts never mentioned it (Randi, Franken, etc.).
Perhaps AAR saved Seder because they learned from the mistake of canceling Marc.

There was a big campaign in Portland when KPOJ announced the move to put Tyger Thom in the MS time slot.
I used to read on AAP about the campaign to save Morning Sedition. People were amazed at the effort. SEDER’s position was not doomed like Maron’s was.

I don’t know about MS being on too early. Around here (NYC area) at least morning drive is really big in drawing ratings. And MS did what morning drive is supposed to do – it was funny and “light” enough to keep people listening. Whatever went wrong, it wasn’t the time slot

Well, NYC is not the world, of course. Kos is out in California. Atrios is in Philly, but not everybody who sits at home and blogs for a living gets up early to listen to the radio, and I don’t really recall anything on Liberal Oasis about MS. James Wolcott was a supporter, and the guy that wrote that three-part thing on AAR (can’t think of it right now) “got” Marc. But there wasn’t a whole lot of other “outside” stuff that I saw.
Armstrong Williams is on a local radio station that will also carry AAR programming. His show isn’t on aar.
No, I meant that it was on too early for some of the “name” bloggers to be familiar with it, and push for it (the way some have for MR). It was a great show that wouldn’ve kicked some ass with proper promotion – especially after Howard Stern went to Sirius.
If the time slot for you is 6-9 am then that’s a great time slot, but most of us in the west had to listen at 3am live on the radio. And we’re talking about radio numbers because streaming numbers still don’t count.
Yeah, and those of in the vast majority of the world don’t have an AAR affiliate to listen to.
After the Sirius thing, I really missed waking up to MS. After a short time, I got used to listening delayed, via the podcast, and after I quit working, and didn’t need to get up in the morning, the podcasts were even better.
Yeah, waking up to Marc and the gang live every morning was the best for me. I remember when he responded to my first email to him on the air. I was thrilled for a week! :love:

I had my FM Transmitter hooked to my Sirius receiver, and my alarm clock radio set for “six past the hour” (even though I really didn’t need to get up that early), and would wake up to the RHCP’s, and then “Gooooood Morning geniuses, philospoher kings….” 🙁 Damn, I miss that.

Javed Iqbal, a.k.a. “John Iqbal,” 42, of Staten Island, N.Y., has been arrested and charged with conspiring to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), RAW STORY has learned.
A complaint announced today by the FBI alleges that through a company called HDTV Ltd. located in Brooklyn, Iqbal and others provided customers in the New York area with satellite broadcasts of al Manar, which is a television station owned and/or operated by Hezbollah.
The Department of Treasury named al Manar as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity” in March 2006, thereby making it a crime to, among other things, engage in business transactions with al Manar. In conjunction with the arrest, agents executed search warrants at both HDTV’s Brooklyn office and Iqbal’s Staten Island residence where, it is alleged, Iqbal maintained several satellite dishes.
Iqbal was arrested Wednesday.
His case will be presented today in Manhattan federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Gabriel W. Gorenstein, who will decide whether Iqbal is detained or released on bail pending further proceedings.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen Miller is in charge of the prosecution.

It is too early to judge how solid is the ceasefire agreed upon in the second Lebanon war. But it is already possible to draw some initial conclusions – the most important of which is the resounding Israeli military failure. Such a failure can stop for a while the more ambitious US-Israeli plans to extend the military campaign against Iran and Syria, although the danger is not over.
The Israeli debacle however has more complex implications. The first is in the realm of domestic Israeli politics. The major theme of the developing internal debate is the question of the “lost deterrence”.
Aggressive
Surely, say Israeli commentators, the war that meant to regain Israel its lost power of deterrence has eroded that power even further. In other societies common sense would have dictated that such a defeat would lead to a rethinking over the usage of military power – but not in Israel. The danger is that the conclusion would be to use more force to regain that lost deterrence.
The first buds of the local soul searching indeed indicate that this is going to be the major conclusion of both the army and the political system.
Thus, we should expect more bloodshed and more aggressive policies – if not immediately against Syria and Iran, then against the Palestinians. The second realm is the politics of the Arab world in general and that of Palestine in particular. Enormous admiration is felt in the Arab world and in Palestine for the success of Hizbollah.
However, with all the respect for the resistance and its steadfastness, secular and socialist movements are fearful that such an admiration is not just for the resilience of the Hizbollah but also for the dogma that guided it. This can and should lead to a more fruitful and meaningful dialogue between the left and the popular Islamic movements of resistance in order to find a common ground for the future. This future must be based on respect for tradition and religion, an aspiration for social and economic justice and, hopefully, careful observance of human and civil rights for all.
Without the rebuilding of the left in the Arab world there is a danger that a much narrower interpretation of Islamic tradition would reign in the Arab world and beyond. And yet it seems that many in the Arab world – and particularly in Palestine – were empowered by the successful resistance Hizbollah has shown. Without Hizbollah, the Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora would not have dared to tell US secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, “You are not welcome here without a ceasefire agreement.”
If more moderate and secular forces in the Arab world would follow suit and use wisely the weapon of the weak – which is a refusal to play the role accorded to them in the US charade of “the new Middle East” – they would win the popular support and credibility enjoyed now only by Hamas and Hizbollah.

The best thing you can do Travis is secure a life that minimizes pain. Then you are free to write. I do not know how old you are, but a city or state job if young enough, you can retire in 20. So if you are less than 25, you are “done” way early. If you are a success you can always quit.
This economy is going down the tubes. Find somthing secure and indispensible.
Faulkner was a postman. Do your deal and GO HOME. Decent wage, Health Care….= Free Time= Writing Time.
