Ah, Saturday, when my mind turns to thoughts of…well, death, actually. My brain has been somewhat obsessed with it lately. I dunno if it’s having el diablo sulfurado for president, seeing my country embrace torture, humiliation, and death (not necessarliy in that order), or just that I have so much shit to do that death seems like a good way to get some friggin’ sleep. But, no rest for the weary here, so I guess I better get busy procrastinating. You still have another chance to catch Marc at the CanWest ComedyFest if you’re up that way. Enjoy.

Leaked French Intel. document claims OBL dead
French Foreign Intelligence Document Claims that Osama Bin Laden is Dead
23 September 2006 | 11:35 | FOCUS News Agency
Paris. A document of the French Foreign Intelligence Service (DGSE), cited by l’Est Républicain claims that the Saudi secret services had proves that Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden was dead, Reuters announced. More details were expected from Riad so that they could spread the news. The French authorities refuse to comment the news but last week the Chief of French Armed Forces General announced that he was not sure whether Osama Bin Laden was alive. According to the information of the Saudi services Bin Laden died on 23rd August from typhus while in Pakistan. The French intelligence thought the information was quite reliable and that was why they had sent it to the President, the Prime Minister and to the ministers of interior and defense, the publication points out.

Unable to be certain the machines’ software is safe from tampering that could distort the vote, Judge Lawrence Manzanares ordered the state to immediately devise detailed rules for counties to ensure that no one can get to the machines to reprogram them.

When I was a NYC teacher we went on strike. There is a law called the Taylor Law in NY which says that for every day you strike you are docked TWO days pay. After we paid these fines (they were simply deducted from future pay) we were told that we had to pay the taxes on the money that we paid as fines. Even though those taxes would have been deducted FROM that money we were forced top pay them over and above the money we never received.
Oh, to be wealthy and not have to pay taxes.

Someone at Daily Kos had an interesting point about this alleged death of OBL: that Rove was probably looking to hold it till late October (since he promised right-wingers a surprise that would help them), but the French decided to release the news now to nip that one in the bud. Thank you, France!
Another question is whether this, if true, gives Bush a bounce, or if it just deprives the families of people who lost loved ones on 9/11/01 of the “closure of vengeance.” If a criminal dies of natural causes before getting caught, it does kind of mean he got away with it, doesn’t it?

While it’s true that Chávez’s shout-out is garnering Chomsky a lot of attention, if not quite acclaim, he’s hardly toiled in obscurity. A longtime professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology — he’s since retired from full-time teaching — Chomsky, 77, has written more than 100 books and is well known for his far-left political activism. He has argued, among other things, that the United States and Israel have been the main impediments to peace in the Middle East, that capitalist globalization was partly to blame for 9/11, and that marijuana should be decriminalized. In some European circles, Chomsky’s popularity rivals that of “Baywatch” actor David Hasselhoff , and he’s a sufficiently iconic figure in his own country that a poster with his likeness occasionally appears on the TV show “Gilmore Girls.”
“This is a whole new level,” said Chomsky’s wife, Carol , who picked up the phone yesterday at the couple’s Lexington home after just one ring. “Noam is flooded, absolutely flooded, and the media hoopla — I don’t know what else to call it — is not entirely pleasant.”
The problem, she said, and the likely reason her husband of 56 years would not be returning a reporter’s phone call, are the sorts of questions Chomsky is being asked. They’re not serious enough. Rather than talking about the book, which asserts that US foreign policy relies almost exclusively on the threat of force, the media want to talk about the author’s feelings.

How Israel is Engineering the “Clash of Civilizations”
By JONATHAN COOK
Nazareth.
The trajectory of a long-running campaign that gave birth this month to the preposterous all-party British parliamentary report into anti-Semitism in the UK can be traced back to intensive lobbying by the Israeli government that began more than four years ago, in early 2002.
At that time, as Ariel Sharon was shredding the tattered remains of the Oslo accords by reinvading West Bank towns handed over to the Palestinian Authority in his destructive rampage known as Operation Defensive Shield, he drafted the Israeli media into the fray. Local newspapers began endlessly highlighting concerns about the rise of a “new anti-Semitism”, a theme that was rapidly and enthusiastically taken up by the muscular Zionist lobby in the US.
It was not the first time, of course, that Israel had called on American loyalists to help it out of trouble. In Beyond Chutzpah, Norman Finkelstein documents the advent of claims about a new anti-Semitism to Israel’s lacklustre performance in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. On that occasion, it was hoped, the charge of anti-Semitism could be deployed against critics to reduce pressure on Israel to return Sinai to Egypt and negotiate with the Palestinians.
Israel alerted the world to another wave of anti-Semitism in the early 1980s, just as it came under unprecedented criticism for its invasion and occupation of Lebanon. What distinguished the new anti-Semitism from traditional anti-Jewish racism of the kind that led to Germany’s death camps, said its promoters, was that this time it embraced the progressive left rather than the far right.
The fresh claims about a new anti-Semitism began life in the spring of 2002, with the English-language website of Israel’s respected liberal daily newspaper, Haaretz, flagging for many months a special online supplement of articles on the “New anti-Semitism”, warning that the “age-old hatred” was being revived in Europe and America. The refrain was soon taken up the Jerusalem Post, a rightwing English-language newspaper regularly used by the Israeli establishment to shore up support for its policies among Diaspora Jews.
Like its precursors, argued Israel’s apologists, the latest wave of anti-Semitism was the responsibility of Western progressive movements — though with a fresh twist. An ever-present but largely latent Western anti-Semitism was being stoked into frenzy by the growing political and intellectual influence of extremist Muslim immigrants. The implication was that an unholy alliance had been spawned between the left and militant Islam…

Why would OBL dying of natural causes give a bounce to Bush’s poll numbers?
Why are we still using logic as our yardstick to measure voter leanings?
What’s the matter with Kansas? What’s the matter with people?
After all that has happened, is there anything Bush could possibly do to gain your support? Of course not, because the record — and right and wrong –matter to you.
Those wacky independents who swing back and forth don’t think that way. They’re really not all that interested. Its an emotional and cultural response, because things like, well, gutter covers are far more significant in their lives, except to the extent that Washington directly intrudes, such as at the gas pump, or when their neighbor’s son comes home in a box. Many of them could be easily bought with a last-minute 300 dollar tax rebate.
What did Jefferson Davis say about the Confederacy’s goal: “All that we want is to be left alone.” Most people, even liberals, feel that way.
If OBL is going to ‘leave us alone’ because he’s dead, that’s a reason to be happy, and to go back to voting the straight GOP line as if nothing’s happened.

COMPIEGNE, France (Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to reassure
France and Germany on Saturday they had nothing to fear from Moscow’s growing
economic clout and held out the prospect of more natural gas for Europe.
Putin’s remarks at a joint news conference with French President Jacques Chirac
and German Chancellor Angela Merkel followed a meeting which took place against
a background of renewed Western concern on energy security and aviation.
The meeting in an 18th century chateau, close to the spot where the armistice after
World War One was signed, was billed by France as a chance to exchange views.
But Russia’s acquisition earlier this month of a 5 percent stake in Europe’s flagship
aerospace group EADS and standoff between Moscow and Western oil firms put a
sharp focus on Moscow’s ambitions to use its huge energy reserves to increase its
global influence.

Hey there, Cnick. You got port 8000 open and forwarded to the proper computer?
i donno pj, let me try this
he connection has timed out
The server at 71.8.9.181 is taking too long to respond.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
ok i changed something, can you connect now?
Before you shut it down, I was able to open it up in WinAmp (just using http://71.8.9.181:8000). So I wonder if you have the content in the proper directory. May also want to try .pls instead of .m3u. When I used pls it told me the content wasn’t there. Could barely hear your voice – lots of hiss.
Hummm some person with a southern accent talking about Sweetwater..
Thats in RealPlayer which I tagged as the default M3u player … You keep timing out and dropping the connection
Much better sound now, and the browser link works. Got pretty frequent dropouts, though.
ok that did it, that’s me in my last podcast
OK, the dropoputs seem to have gone away.
I’m trying out some Mac software called Nicecast
Oh, dropped out now. You’ve got it at 128 kbps? That’s quite high. What’s your upload speed?
so i need to lower it pj?
ok i changed it
If its a setup it will get them removed from office by means other than an election:tommygun:
Well, you don’t need to lower it, but you can accomodate more listeners with it lower, and there’s not a whole lot of benefit to having it really high for voice.
So is it still dropping out?
Its working fine now Cnick
No, no droupouts. Always did like this song.
The music even sounded ok
Oops. Gone again. Have you ever checked out your upload speed?
I think Cnick took it down I can’t even connect now
i turned it off for a sec, now back on
I can’t get it at all
Somehow I’m supposed to be able to do voiceovers on this thing
my connection seems to go low from time to time for some reason
okay i’m gonna restart it hold on
back on
If you are playing a song its back up if not .. the NSA already found you.
Are you using a cable or DSL connection from your home ??
can you hear it now?
playing babies, a song
Cable modem charter cable
I have it now, CNick :pup:
Sounds like music who’s I can’t say .. Sounds better than AAR’s a lot better.
aye sounds much better
this one is nice and techno-ish
Send me an Angel by Real Life
I’m trying to figure out how to do voiceovers with this thing. Then I’ll talk to you live if I can figure it out
Cable works like the network in an office building where they have one cable from the server to a hub and then twenty people using that one connection. The data rate they quote is a burst rate unless you happen to be the only user.
ok i guess I’ll spend the 40 bucks if you think its working ok. They put noise in the mix after 20 minutes if you don’t buy the software
Sounds good here. How are you playing the song?? From a CD or from a file on disk ??
The key is that it’s an asynchronous connection, so upstream is usually much slower than downstream (which is the way most people want it, for web surfing and downloading, but not when you have a server running). You can go to dslreports.com and pick one of the speed tests from the tools page to get an idea of what you have to work with. I usually pick the SF one, just to keep it consistent. You may have to register (for free) first.
Or go for something open source and free.
I’m using iTunes to play the songs
thanks pj, but since I’m running a Mac here I’ve limited choices. But it does sound okay then?
On a PC most of these record digital sounds to disk programs intercept the combined sound stream into the audio out Codec so you use the audio controls in control panel to mix the sounds. So you could mix a Cd , a microphone some digital synthed sound and the line in all together.
yeah both the voice and the music sounded fine
Sounded good to me. Shoutcast runs on OSX (not a pretty GUI, probably; just in a terminal window), and I think Icecast does, too. Plus there’s the Darwin streaming server (for serving Quicktime stuff).
These servers (I assume Nicecast is the same) will take audio files (that they are compatible with) and transcode them on the fly into whatever bitrate/sampling rate you stipulate. You can also use the line in, but I haven’t tried that myself.
ok next up is Bill Maher
So I guess you guys can use this URL click here from now on to listen to whatever I’m broadcasting.
In a worrisome sign that Muqtada al-Sadr has gone deep into an apocalyptic sense of the end of the world [Ar.], al-Zaman reports that the young nationalist Shiite cleric maintained that the US Department of Defense has compiled an enormous file on the hidden Twelfth Imam, that is virtually complete save that it lacks his photograph.
[For Shiite Muslims, the Twelfth Imam or Imam Mahdi is a little like Jesus Christ for evangelical Christians. Shiites believe that the Imam was translated by God into a supernatural realm, from which he secretly rules the world and from which he will one day return to restore the world to justice.]
Al-Sadr said during his Friday prayer sermon in Kufa that “The United States has been preparing for ten years a rapid reaction force against the awaited Imam Mahdi and the US provoked the Gulf War so as to fill the region with military outposts for this purpose.

I like bar room floozy names….Lola, Rita, Coco, Kitty, Cherry, Peaches….Then there are the old lady farmer names like Mabel, Bertha, Sally, Martha…..
I like lit. specific names like Scout and I like nature names like Sky or Lake….River….
Then of the WASP names there are some pretty good ones like Hope and Grace.
I named my puppy Angelina Violet, mainly after Angelina Jolie for her humanitarian work….but I call her Puppy…and I call Lola Puppa….Then Ive got a Sandy Girl (4th of July in Asbury Park,) Buck Owens, and Orchid who came with her name and had been through so much that I couldnt bring myself to change it.
One is there now, it’s kinda big though. I need to take smaller pictures. So, I was thinking of naming her Liberty, which sounds good when you yell it, even though it has 3 syllables. Plus, I could call her Libby for short, which is good too.
I considered Mabel and I like Sally and Betty or Betsy and Wilma too. But I think maybe we need more Liberty. :fist:

did you mail any of them yet?
I gave one to Dinosaur Jr. Mike Johnson–he is in town. But I have only made 3 copies so far. I left some good clips out. I may add them now.
The Hildegard music video? You did not get one in the mail?
ok I think so, with the nun?
was it a dramatic movie or was it a musical performance?
dramatic movie
That was a movie about Hildegard. Did you watch the whole thing?
hi sheeple!
yeah. I didn’t think that’s what you were referring to
hey Sean
No. There is a musical performance of Hildegard’s music. Ordo Virtutum.
I don’t think I have that
Was there an envelope in the package in which the cassette came?
:yippee:i went and saw school for scoundrels and jack-ass………… twice! hilarious!
yes
I don’t know about the first and I’m not a “jackass” person…but cool
in my safekeeping, don’t worry 😉
could hear Anne’s pathetic pleas behind me, drowned by rolling blasts of thunder. I did not heed her, I detested her. The mere thought of her, …
I saw that you posted that to the group
That’s White Castle money.
hehe. Yeah, we’re going to have a feast
I am tired. :40:
well sleepyhead, you finished the zine 🙂 You done good. I can’t wait to see it
did you party? :alc:
Nicki zzzzz :omg:
No. I did not party. Up all last night getting material together. Did not sleep well.
I was reading Bobby Kennedy’s voting machine article.
aww you should catch up on sleep, then.
Rolling Stone…thanks for reminding me, I meant to read it
oh yeah i had white castle today too! and last night!
yummy…how much do burgers go for now? I haven’t been to one in a couple of years (and the store-bought frozen ones are more expensive as everyone knows)
Just leave me a message here for me at the Order of the Holy Rose, or at the
orderoftheholyrose@excite.com and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
:omg:
Hey! I bought the frozen, packaged ones.
Averages to about $.77 per burger.
oh if you need personal guidance I know of another altar :pent::sdavid:
does it? That’s not as expensive as I thought (they’re pretty good too)
um they range from like 50 cents for a hamburger to i think 92 for a cheese and bacon one but they are so tiny!
I would prefer your way to heaven. Worship at your altar.:pent:
sanctuary baby
$4.59 for a package of six cheeseburgers. Probably better quality when you get them at the stand.
ha ha ali-g kicks ass!
right, they’re better from White Castle but the frozen are surprisingly good, though if I put a bit of ketchup in between the buns before nuking them they taste really improves
if we go to the one on Fordham it’s only a few blocks from the Bronx Zoo
the jalapeno burgers are awesome! other than those i really dont care for em!
I don’t think I’ve tried that kind, Sean!
The Kazakh government has previously threatened Baron-Cohen with legal action, for allowing Borat to, among other things, make fun of his homeland, demean women, slander gypsies and urge listeners to “Throw the Jew Down the Well.”
:rofl2:
:ear::tommygun::paranoid:
“[The Jews are] Smartest people on the face of the earth for managing things and making it happen.”
Ed Schultz
I swear. I just got done hearing him say that.
“That’s not a slam, is it?”
the well eh? I don’t think he’s getting near that well –
this was on Ed Schultz?
:fist: i want the jewey jew show!
Yes. I just heard Schultz say that on his radio show. A rerun.
Did you watch that Ali G episode where the “Throw the Jew Down the Well” incident took place?
well you know Jews are smart because how else could we own the planet?
no I guess I didn’t
Remember what the opposite side of the judeophile coin is?
I don’t like hearing these sorts of statements from supposed professional people like liberal talkshow hosts. What ignorance!
take this you jewey jew!:rabbi::tommygun: mwah ha ha ha ha!
it’s a stereotype…and it’s also part of a negative stereotype if you really trace it. And it’s often meant as an insult anyway…even when it’s not it’s damaging I think. Kind of like “black people sure can sing”
It was in a bar in Arizona. Borat started a sing-a-long with a song whose chorus went “Throw the jew down the well.” He got the people to sing.
You know, I am of mixed feelings about this gag. It lends credence to the charge that there is widespread antisemitism in the US.
it’s a strange gag, to say the least. It sounds antisemitic
And tapdance, too. You got it. I don’t think Schultz meant to be offensive. But damn! He has been around for a while.
ok so this house is right in the art’s section of buffalo i think i NEED to buy it!
it’s cute, Sean! At least from the picture
Schultz should know better, but he doesn’t seem to be the “political” correct type…I doubt if there’s a more sinsiter antisemitism lurking behind it but it still shows he follows stereotypes
Cohen was trying to reveal the ubiquity of antisemitism. People started singing without realizing how awful the lyrics are. I remember another episode in which he visited a self-defense instructor. An exceptionally nice man. Borat started joking with him, trying to sneak in a punch. As he tried different strikes, Borat would say, “The jew goes like this.” The jew comes in like this.” The instructor would gently block the attacks. He was entertaining the strange foreigner. He was not revealling what a closet antisemite he truly was. What to make of it?
Mindlessly plugs into stereotypes.
 The cobra goes like this.
:penguin::fu:
I don’t know…I guess I’d have to have to watch it to see what he was really trying to do, “satire” or whatever…it just makes me feel uncomfortable, though…
if he talked about the return of Shekinah it would be a different story :pent::sdavid::sdavid::sdavid:
Another of his characters is a gay Austrian television reporter. Funny as hell. He reveals a lot of gay phobia. Effective. The Ali G character is a kick, too. Borat is funny, but I don’t know what he is trying to demonstrate with the antisemite schtick.
The return of Shemanski! :spank: :omg:
Borat Sagdiyev (assumed Cyrillic: ????? ???????) is a satirical Kazakhstani journalist character invented and portrayed by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen. Borat evolved from previous characters that Baron Cohen had developed; firstly an unnamed Moldovan TV reporter (for LWT/Granada TV and the BBC’s Comedy Nation) and later an Albanian TV reporter called Kristo (for the Paramount Comedy Channel).
Borat appeared regularly on Da Ali G Show, for Channel 4, with skits featuring him often relying on outrageous behaviour and actions, and the reactions of uninformed individuals around him. In some cases, Borat’s guests embrace his anti-Semitism and misogyny by agreeing with him, while other guests attempt to explain Western values to him.
I have plans, oh I have plans… you are to find out in due time
omigod that emo!
Borat is a character. He is probably closeted gay. I have not seen those other Cohen characters.
I’ve never watched it, now I’m curious
Sometimes, Borat’s “victims” go along with him by not calling him on his antisemitism. He has some backwards things to say about his wife–and women in general–too.
well in the name of comedy you can seemingly do anything, but I’ve heard enough mysogenistic comedians to last a lifetime. I generally have low tolerance for them
The jew sneaks up on you like this.
actually I don’t know if I want to see him. This might be an example as antisemitism posing as satire.
Mysogynistic?
mysogynistic. ye gads I do have trouble spelling that word
Sacha Baron Cohen! :rofl2:
No. He is a satirist. I just think he has chosen the wrong target, perhaps.
Cohen an antisemite! :rofl2:
well…he sounds cutting edge, that’s for sure
he guess so. He obviously stirs up real antisemities though during the performances. But that’s the whole point, I guess, to ‘expose” it
ooo…lookit my blog numbers, they’re going up!!!
Ali G has had lots of interviews with prominent people. Chomsky. Nader. He made Andy Rooney look like an arrogant ass once.
I’m so cool!!!! :nixon:
Damn, ok. I’ll have to wtach that show
Do you think antisemitism is widespread in the US?
You are catching up to me.
compared to what? No….I think when it becomes a problem it’s often very ugly. I think it exists. I think people outside of, say, my own area have misconceptions about Jews and that those misconceptions are pretty widespread, but that’s not the same thing as antisemitism
oh I think I’ll….catch you
Stereotypes. Unpleasant, to be sure, but not diabolic. My hunch about the Borat antisemitic schtick is because Cohen’s family had a rough go of it in Central Asia before migrating. I do not know, though.
well he has to know antisemitism pretty well to satirize it successfully
