GOP candidate dredges up old talking points about pandas and prostitutes to attack Democrat
Mike Sheehan
Published: Tuesday September 26, 2006
A new political ad from Republican candidate Vernon Robinson opens with a picture of a soldier’s coffin draped with the American flag, and proceeds to run off a litany of charges against incumbent Rep. Brad Miller (D-NC), including accusations that Miller voted to support studies of elderly masturbation, Vietnamese prostitutes and panda bears. The ad follows…

CNN) — The war in Iraq has not made the world safer from terror, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has told CNN, saying he stands by statements on the subject he makes in his new book, “In the Line of Fire.”
In the book, Musharraf — a key ally who is often portrayed as being in complete agreement with U.S. President George W. Bush on the war on terror and other issues — writes he never supported the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.
“I stand by it, absolutely,” Musharraf told CNN’s “The Situation Room.” Asked whether he disagreed with Bush, he said, “I’ve stated whatever I had to … it [the war] has made the world a more dangerous place.”
He also addressed allegations that Pakistan was a less-than-enthusiastic recruit into the war on terror and that former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage told a Pakistani official that the United States would bomb Pakistan “back to the stone age” if it did not cooperate with Washington after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Two Presbyterian ministers were among 71 people arrested during a series of peaceful protests against the Iraq war Tuesday, said a spokeswoman for a group participating in the protests.
Demonstrators held sit-ins, prayer services and sing-alongs at four locations in the Capitol complex, including the central atrium of the Senate Hart Office Building.
The demonstrations were reminiscent of the Vietnam era, with protesters strumming guitars, singing peace songs, holding flowers and wearing hats made of balloons

Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Senator Chris Dodd (D-CT) introduced emergency legislation to amend the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) this afternoon to offer funding to states and counties who make ‘contingency paper ballots’ available to voters to be used at the voter’s option instead of electronic voting systems.
The so-called contingency paper ballots would be counted as normal ballots, as opposed to Provisional Ballots which must be vetted first to determine the integrity of the voter’s registration. Provisional ballots are frequently counted only several days after Election Day, and often, not at all. The Senate legislation, however, does not spell that out specifically.
The BRAD BLOG has learned from a source currently working on similar legislation in the House, set to be filed there shortly, will include such specific language. Several Capitol Hill sources have confirmed that such legislation is currently in the works. We hope to have more details on the Houes version later today.
The inclusion of Dodd as a co-sponsor on this 11th hour legislation is no small coup, as he was one of the original co-sponsors of the HAVA legislation of 2002 which this bill would amend. Until now, he and the other bi-partisan co-sponsors of that original legislation have been reluctant to open HAVA to amendment.
The legislation, filed just after 4pm ET this afternoon, would refund voting jurisdictions who offer paper ballots as an option to voters, and requires such jurisdictions post “in a conspicuous manner at the polling place, a notice stating that contingency paper ballots are available at the polling place and that a voter may request to use such a ballot at the voter’s discretion.”
Election integrity advocacy groups and citizens alike have been rallying members of both the U.S. House and Senate to pass such legislation since The BRAD BLOG initially called for what we had called, the “LET AMERICA VOTE ACT” last Tuesday. The act we called for would mandate emergency paper ballots at all polling places this November in light of thousands of voters having been sent without being able to cast a vote in primary after primary election so far this year when new electronic voting machines either malfunctioned or were otherwise unavailable…

Most Iraqis Favor Immediate U.S. Pullout, Polls Show
Leaders’ Views Out of Step With Public
By Amit R. Paley
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, September 27, 2006; Page A22
BAGHDAD, Sept. 26 — A strong majority of Iraqis want U.S.-led military forces to immediately withdraw from the country, saying their swift departure would make Iraq more secure and decrease sectarian violence, according to new polls by the State Department and independent researchers.
In Baghdad, for example, nearly three-quarters of residents polled said they would feel safer if U.S. and other foreign forces left Iraq, with 65 percent of those asked favoring an immediate pullout, according to State Department polling results obtained by The Washington Post.
Another new poll, scheduled to be released on Wednesday by the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland, found that 71 percent of Iraqis questioned want the Iraqi government to ask foreign forces to depart within a year. By large margins, though, Iraqis believed that the U.S. government would refuse the request, with 77 percent of those polled saying the United States intends to keep permanent military bases in the country.
The stark assessments, among the most negative attitudes toward U.S.-led forces since they invaded Iraq in 2003, contrast sharply with views expressed by the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Last week at the United Nations, President Jalal Talabani said coalition troops should remain in the country until Iraqi security forces are “capable of putting an end to terrorism and maintaining stability and security.”…
***
“The very fact that there is such a low support for American forces has to do with the American failure to do basically anything for Iraqis,” said Mansoor Moaddel, a professor of sociology at Eastern Michigan University, who commissioned a poll earlier this year that also found widespread support for a withdrawal. “It’s part of human nature. People respect authority and power. But the U.S. so far has been unable to establish any real authority.”…

Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.) is threatening to punish Democrats for using an Appropriations Committee room for an unofficial hearing on Iraq oversight if it happens again.
“They better stop this,” the Mississippi Republican said. “This will be the last one or there will be retribution.”
Lott suggested that Republicans could hold GOP-only hearings or seek other forms of payback.
But if he is looking for a culprit in abetting the Democratic Policy Committee’s (DPC) hearing yesterday, he need look no further than fellow Mississippi Republican Thad Cochran, chairman of the Appropriations Committee, who controls the Dirksen Building room that Democrats used yesterday and have used for past hearings.
But Lott and other Republicans are upset that Democrats have gone outside the committee process to highlight the Iraq war before the November election.
“They’re abusing the system,” Lott said.

House Passes Ban on Permanent Iraq Bases
By Noam N. Levey, Times Staff Writer
September 27, 2006
WASHINGTON — Congress is on the verge of barring the construction of permanent bases for U.S. forces in Iraq, a move aimed at quelling concerns in the Arab world that American forces will remain in the war-torn country indefinitely.
The ban, which was inserted into the annual defense spending bill, won House approval Tuesday night when the chamber overwhelmingly approved the mammoth defense appropriations bill, 394-22.

Hey, if anybody’s in the market for a new DVD player, today’s woot isn’t a bad deal (plays DivX movies, which is nice).
PJ- I need a dvd player for Will’s room, but I was thinking that I should get a DVD recorder and give him one of the old DVD players. Im also thinking that BlueRay might gum everything up. I hate to buy anything else if the technology is about to change.
They have those things onsale everywhere, which is sort of telling.
….But that is a really good one.
Trent Lott = Republican = majority party = therefore Godlike and can do/say anything he wants. That may change soon, we’ll see
Yeah, the DivX part is nice. You could put your “home movie” DVDs onto CDs, with little loss of quality (especially if you’re watchignon a regular TV).
Hopefully Trent Lott will soon be out doing Brylcreem commercials for a living.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) — Clouds of locusts have descended around the Mexican beach resort of Cancun, destroying corn crops and worrying officials in a region still recovering from the devastating fury of last year’s Hurricane Wilma.
Traveling in dark fogs, locusts are grasshoppers that have entered a swarming phase, capable of covering large distances and rapidly stripping fields of vegetation.
“Imagine, they fly in the form of a flock. Imagine the width of a street,” government official Martin Rodriguez said on Tuesday, describing the fields around Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula.
Towns have formed pesticide-armed brigades and are winning the war against the 3-week-old plague that has left tourist areas unharmed, authorities said.
Squads wait until night to blast the flying insects as they are roosting on plants. They carry motorized backpack pumps to shoot chemicals in a fight that has affected from 2,000 to 2,500 acres (800 to 1,000 hectares) of farm land.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Bush administration has blocked release of a report that suggests global warming is contributing to the frequency and strength of hurricanes, the journal Nature reported Tuesday.
The possibility that warming conditions may cause storms to become stronger has generated debate among climate and weather experts, particularly in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.
In the new case, Nature said weather experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – part of the Commerce Department – in February set up a seven-member panel to prepare a consensus report on the views of agency scientists about global warming and hurricanes.
According to Nature, a draft of the statement said that warming may be having an effect.
In May, when the report was expected to be released, panel chair Ants Leetmaa received an e-mail from a Commerce official saying the report needed to be made less technical and was not to be released, Nature reported.

Most Charter Schools Miss Test Benchmarks
Performance Echoes Traditional System’s
Thirty of 34 charter school campuses, representing thousands of District students, failed to meet reading and math benchmarks on a new test, according to data released yesterday by the D.C. Public Charter School Board.

The charter school movement, for all its hype, is a cynical effort to blame the unions for student achievement and to devise a system to break the union.
Many charter schools are advertised as free of union rules.
In case the anti union and anti-teacher message has been missed, NYC Mayor Bloomberg recently announced that his mayoral control has been a good thing for the schools because it puts students first and teachers LAST. From esperience I can tell you that teachers have always been last and the students NEXT to last. Political nonsence is first, of course.

“Thanks to laser scanning, we were able to uncover the very fine gauze veil Mona Lisa was wearing on her dress. This was something typical for either soon-to-be or new mothers at the time,” Michel Menu, research director of the French Museums’ Center for Research and Restoration, said Wednesday

Christian Coalition starting anew in Ga.
September 27, 2006
ATLANTA –Georgia’s branch of the Christian Coalition has announced plans to change names and split from the national group — making it the fourth state to leave the socially conservative political group.
Director Sadie Fields said the Georgia branch’s board voted about two weeks ago to make the change because of the Christian Coalition of America’s liberal “drift.”

Fields said she became concerned by the changing direction of the national organization, which now takes stances on issues like the minimum wage, the environment and Internet law instead of core issues like abortion and same-sex marriage.
Combs agreed the coalition had begun broadening its agenda. “Family values reach beyond abortion and gay marriage,” she said.

kullduggery in the Pentagon's Budget
Rumsfeld’s AutoCarterization
Now some of Alex Cockburn’s critics will think that Autocarterization is a conspiracy being run by Rumsfeld, an evil genius, but these readers might want to consider the fact that the man is simply an incompetent tool of the Military–Industrial–Congressional Complex or MICC. His “Autocarterization” may simply be reflection of his own arrogance and ignorance catching up with him at last. What we are seeing is not really a new phenomenon — it is the conditioned behavior of a living social system that has evolved methods of survival by a process of trial and error over time. In any case, the Pentagon’s milcrats, like General Moseley, are primed to to take advantage of it automatically. With the cooperation of triangulating democratic apparachiks, who will throw money at the Pentagon to prove they are not do not “weak” on defense, the courtiers of Versailles will duck the blame again for their self inflicted wounds as they ratchet up the power games to set the stage for yet another round of increases in the volume of the dollar flow out the defense money spigot. Of course their front loading and political engineering operations will make future problems worse; of course the soldiers at the pointy end of the spear and taxpayer will get hosed again, but one must remember that these games serve a larger purpose, for they are necessary insure the survival and growth of the Military–Industrial–Congressional Complex over the long term. Or as one officer once told me: “Welcome to the Pentagon’s Gelateria, where we never run out of self-licking ice cream cones.”
The seamlessness of this well-structured way of life is not only a good for the courtiers in Versailles on the Potomac, the contractors, the supporting cast of thinktank “intellectuals,” and an enervated mainstream media which recycles old news as new news, its orderliness will keep Alex Cockburn’s anti-conspiracy crusade in business for years.

Beating Back This Bill
by Matt Stoller, Wed Sep 27, 2006 at 02:45:47 PM EST
There are two debates going on, one internal and one in public. In public, the Democrats are rolling over, hence the anger at moral scolds like Obama. In private, it looks like the Democrats are not rolling over on this. They are furious about this compromise, which eviscerates Habeas Corpus. Here’s video of Ike Skelton, the ranking Democrat on the Armed Services Committee. Skelton is objecting to this bill, though a few days ago Skelton was saying “I will need to look at the final bill carefully, but elements of the compromise I have seen are promising.” He’s angry that the Democratic amendments were turned down.
The Senate is where this bill can be stopped. The key Senators to move are the Maine Republican Senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. If we can shift them, we can stop this bill from being passed.

At least 20 years ago, some green monk parakeets took up residence in Brooklyn. Apparently these birds do not migrate in the winter so they built large nests around the transformers on the above ground lines that ring the athletic fields of Brooklyn College. A couple of years ago I ocassionally saw one or two birds in Red Hook, another part of Brooklyn, a couple of miles from Brooklyn College. For the past couple of days I’ve been seeing 3 or 4 birds pretty consistently.

Keith Olbermann receives death threats and the NY Post laughs about it:
Keith Olbermann ReceIves a Death Threat, and the New York Post Thinks It’s Pretty Darn Funny
Past Deadline
by Ray Richmond
Keith3_2 The New York Post’s unctuous Page Six “reported” it, but it’s also been independently confirmed that MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann — whose brave commentaries of late taking to task the Bush Administration (and President Bush himself) have invited genuine comparisons to Edward R. Murrow — opened a suspicious letter with a California postmark that was mailed to his New York City home late Tuesday night and out poured a white powdery substance. A threatening note inside reportedly indicated that this represented revenge for his outspoken on-air views of late.
It turns out the powder was laundry detergent and (thank God) not anthrax or any other toxic substance. But Olbermann obviously didn’t know it was harmless until later on and, panic-stricken, called 911 at about 12:30 a.m. ET early this morning, according to the Page Six item. While preliminary tests of the powder confirmed the detergent finding, Olbermann, as a precaution, asked to be taken to the hospital just to be certain.
EnvelopeNow, whom among us would have treated this as a ho-hum, given the anthrax mail attacks of five years back? No one. Yet the famously right-leaning Post (published by Fox chairman Rupert Murdoch) naturally allowed its politics to get in the way while reporting what was in fact a legitimate and frightening death threat against a journalist whom someone was looking to intimidate and paralyze with fear.
Here is the Post item, and I also copy it here in full so you need not stain your computer hard drive by actually having to link to these reprehensible oafs:
POWDER PUFF SPOOKS KEITH
MSNBC loudmouth Keith Olbermann flipped out when he opened his home mail yesterday. The acerbic host of “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” was terrified when he opened a suspicious-looking letter with a California postmark and a batch of white powder poured out. A note inside warned Olbermann, who’s a frequent critic of President Bush’s policies, that it was payback for some of his on-air shtick. The caustic commentator panicked and frantically called 911 at about 12:30 a.m., sources told The Post’s Philip Messing. An NYPD HazMat unit rushed to Olbermann’s pad on Central Park South, but preliminary tests indicated the substance was harmless soap powder. However, that wasn’t enough to satisfy Olbermann, who insisted on a checkup. He asked to be taken to St. Luke’s Hospital, where doctors looked him over and sent him home. Whether they gave him a lollipop on the way out isn’t known. Olbermann had no comment.
Note the sarcasm and cheeky snark, from the headline on down. They refer to a man who received a serious and authentic warning shot at his home address as “acerbic,” “caustic” and a “loudmouth” who “flipped out” and “was terrified,” as if being badly shaken after receiving what he understandably presumed was a deadly biological agent made him a wimp. Yeah I mean, gee, what moron would think it was actual anthrax, huh? And what relevence is there in noting parenthetically that Olbermann is “a frequent critic of President Bush’s policies”? Because he is, the presumption is that he of course deserved it, right? And that he’s a girly-man wuss to boot?
Page Six ought to be completely ashamed to publish a mocking dismissal of what is in fact a serious news story and try to pass it off as journalistic, not to mention putting its contempt for the left above its humanity. But then, it has a long and illustrious track record of being both shameless and inhuman, so this is perfectly in keeping with its style.
Just for fun, my friend Rich Procter crafted his prediction of how a Page Six item would have read had the same thing happened to Fox News personality and NY Post icon Bill O’Reilly rather than Olbermann. I present it here for your indignation and amusement.
TERRORISTS TARGET FOX PUNDIT — COPS CLAIM AL QAEDA LINK
Beloved Fox news personality Bill O’Reilly was stunned by a terrorist attack in his home mail yesterday. The dynamic host of “The O’Reilly Factor” was wary when he opened a suspicious-looking letter with a California postmark and an anthrax-like powder poured out. A note inside warned O’Reilly, one of President Bush’s most vigorous defenders that it was ‘payback’ for his implacable stance against Islamofascist terrorists. The stalwart commentator calmly dialed 911 at about 12:30 a.m., sources told The Post’s Philip Messing. An NYPD HazMat united rushed to O’Reilly’s home, but preliminary tests confirmed what O’Reilly himself suspected — the substance was harmless soap powder. Although Mr. O’Reilly insisted the incident go no further, authorities persuaded him to go to St. Luke’s Hospital, where doctors gave him a clean bill of health. O’Reilly, who reportedly has been a “high value target” for Al Qaeda terrorists, had no comment, but his steely glare and determined stride showed reporters he was unshaken by this attempt on his life.
The only thing that will end this war is if the Democrats take over Congress and cut off the funding. Which they are unlikely to do since they are lacking the backbone to take such a stand. Or the other alternative is to impeach Bush or wait him out. Impeach Bush? The Democrats? I don’t think they’ll do that either. So we’re fucked. That’s the long and the short of it. But of course I donno what I’m talking about.
I’d consider these cowards threatening Keith a badge of honor.
Ah Nick!! So, good to see you…ignore Nicki…he/she will go on trying to incite this or that and shouting about whatever…and then will quickly withdraw if questioned or confronted …or anything…its not worth it to worry about the passive agressive doings of people who dont really want to discuss things in any balanced way….

Alas, NYC is quite the major :billcat: schlep from our provinicial little Upstate NY city (5-6 or more hours depending on traffic & construction), so it is quite unlikely that we could use them. 😥 She also said they were only good for this coming Thursday, Friday, Sunday & Monday. (Ben Bailey & Pauly Shore on those nights, I think). I’m sure the 2 drink minimum still applies. We “won” the tickets because we filled out the feedback card on which I said the headline act (who was it again, Melina?) was really pretty shitty & Marc should have been given more time. That night cost a bundle and was worth every cent.
So, if any of you NYC folks are interested, let me know & I’ll call JB & tell her we want to use our “free” tickets for you.
Now, why does Karma send us “free” tickets that would cost us a small fortune in time & money to use, but doesn’t send us winning lottery tickets???:smack::doh:
Where’s my list? :om: :yinyang:
So funny to see that O’Reilly tihng reported in such a way when Keith just talking about the article in the post today abotu HIS little Anthrax attack…and it was reported in such a snotty horrible way, thanks to Murdoch….
Pauley Shore?? Ugh!
Well, my guest quarters are opened if you want to come and sit through that show, but I dont htink you’ll get me down there! Of course, it would be less expensive if you grabbed dinner at a pizza joint first….but, we were going for the whole experience….
I wish it was someone else, but I hate to waste energy and $$ on acts I dont like.
I will ask my sister, but everyone is sick up there, so I doubt it…
you could put em on freecycle NYC and just give em away or craig’s list and try to sell em cheaper than they would be…maybe you could make enough for a dinner out up there for you guys…?
Someone out there likes Pauly Shore, right?…just not me!
If I ever sit two inches from Marc doing standup again, I won’t be ordering fifty-seven plates of food, that’s for sure. 😳
Sue- There is agreat article in this month’s Bird Talk magazine baout the Monk Parakeets…they have taken over downtown stamford too…we’ve had some big fights about them…
Hav eyou seen the wild parrots of telegraph hill? Its a great docu-movie…also about parros gone wild…
Well, we were starving….we shouldve gotten a sandwich at a deli on the way. We had that extra time in the lounge with the singer….
Interesting piece on Joh Stewart on icky scarborough….
next up, Jesus Camp…
hey Melina..I’m watching that Jesus camp article too..:rant1:
Too brief- they really didn’t get into it did they?
Hey, how goes it?
Hey, I think going on this http://tiny.bz/0tz/ is way more exciting than the seaplane. It was great, by the way!
Thanks, Melina, I’ll check it out. I hope they make some nests in Red Hook. We have above ground wire here. I think they like the tranformers because they keep them warm in the winter. The people around Brooklyn College like them too and have fought with the college to leave the birds alone.
I just watched Keith Olbemann. He said the result of the tests on the material were not available for 6 hours. Final results for 12 or 14 hours. He was aked by the cops and FBI to submit to their medical profile and he was asked to keep the incident quiet. He did not request a check-up but was taken to the ER and released after 10 hours with a Cipro prescription.Only the NY Post reported it in spite of that request and they did not call MSNBC for confirmation or comment. He also said a Post reporter tried to gain acces to him by falsely claiming to be a friend.
Travis!! How are you???
Goos to see you!
Yeah, wasnt that a great Olbermann report, debunking the reporting of the Post!
When I was much younger and worked in the club business I always had NY Post front pages on the wall…way before Murdoch…it was just a fun rag…much less political. My favorite headline ever was Headless BOdy in Topless Bar! I wish I still had that one.
I think it was the post that had half the fornt page on 9-11 showing weeping families kneeling and praying in the hole, and the other half announcing their huge new sweepstakes game thing, with much fanfare….not a publication to miss the opportunity to promote the new Lotto…
Heh, this week on MSNBC: Good Love Gone Bad Week!!
I’m good. Thanks for asking. I have to go now though so i’ll see you later
night travis:pup::pup:
Cool plane!
The New York Post was a liberal afternoon paper. Murdock turned it into a rightwing rag.
…and it lost, and continues to lose tons of money every year….its as if its only there as a delivery system for the lies….Not that it isnt fun in a National Enquirer sort of way… but honestly, the national enquirer does better reporting than the Post….and its not just Pamela Anderson’s different divorces; we’re fighting for our lives here!
Hey- Forst and last…hows that?…and I dont even get any dancing bananas or anything…..just little me here alone….
:banana::banana:Melina:banana::banana:
Thanks Sue- Ive been so sick today that Im mispelling everything anyway….
nite….
Melina, running by but,

Hey, Druid, how are you? Sorry I haven’t written you back yet. I’ve not really been busy but sort of out of it lately. I’ll get to it sometime soon- I promise.
WTF, peeps? Where have all the comments gone?

:rofl2: I think it’s absolutely PERFECT that the timing was such! Ya never know, he may use it in a bit. Wouldn’t you love to be up there with his mom and dad in being used as source material? I would be honored!

Hi Anyone. 😀
I was watching news then accidently switched on 20/20 before I was turning off, but it was a Steve Irwin Memorial and first interview by Terri since his passing.:banana::cry:  :alc:

Maron! Happy belated Birthday brother!
I managed to download the last 9 months of the show while they were free on Air America Place. I just purchased an iPod and have started loading and listening to Sedition a week at a time – starting with April 2005. Funny, informative, revolutionary…of course it’s not on the air anymore. I miss you guys. I miss the funny.
All the best.
