Bailey – A teenage hostage was fatally shot Wednesday as authorities stormed a Platte Canyon High School classroom to end an armed standoff.
An unidentified man, who had entered the school late Wednesday morning and initially taken six hostages, fired at approaching SWAT officers and then at the female hostage before shooting himself, Park County authorities said. He died at the scene.
The girl was flown to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver, where she was pronounced dead at 4:32 p.m. Hospital spokeswoman Bev Lilly said she believed the girl was shot in the head. Authorities did not release the name of the victim, but friends of the family said she was 16-year-old Emily Keyes. Lynn Bigham, a friend of the victim’s, described Emily as “sweet and affectionate.”

The central Asian country lampooned by British comic SACHA BARON COHEN continues to fight his stereotyping with a four-page supplement in the New York Times.
Yesterday’s (27SEP06) publication is the latest in a long line of attempts by the government of Kazakhstan to stave off the expected backlash from Cohen’s latest movie BORAT: CULTURAL LEARNINGS OF AMERICA FOR MAKE BENEFIT GLORIOUS NATION OF KAZAKHSTAN.
The film sees Cohen play spoof Kazakh TV presenter BORAT SAGDIYEV, who portrays his homeland as a country of superstition, incest, political suppression and religious intolerance.
The government hopes the colour supplement helps US audiences appreciate Kazakhstan’s stable economy and outward-looking views instead.
Earlier this week (beg25SEP06) media reports also suggested the republic hopes to spoil Cohen’s box office fortunes with a home grown rival about the struggle of native tribes to expel Mongol invaders, distributed internationally by Hollywood moguls HARVEY and BOB WEINSTEIN.

A last-minute change to a bill currently before Congress on the rights of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay could have sweeping implications inside the United States: It would strip green-card holders and other legal residents of the right to challenge their detention in court if they are accused of being “enemy combatants.”

A new congressional analysis shows the Iraq war is now costing taxpayers almost $2 billion a week — nearly twice as much as in the first year of the conflict three years ago and 20 percent more than last year — as the Pentagon spends more on establishing regional bases to support the extended deployment and scrambles to fix or replace equipment damaged in combat.

This is from Dr. Fox, a gentle veterinarian who writes a column. This is from a letter by someone who adopted a dog rescued from Katrina. They had…… “recently adopted a 2-year-old female black Labrador retriever mix who was rescued from Hurricane Katrina. We have named her Gumbo. She was obviously loved by her former owners, as she is extremely well trained and is housebroken. She never begs for food at the table, will sit and stay on command, and is everything you could ask for, except that she doesn’t know how to play.
She has a huge basket of toys in which I hide treats to get her involved. She will not go for a ball or stick and closes her eyes or turns her face away if we toss the ball in front of her. We have a pool for her to swim in, but she won’t go near it. Do you have any advice on how to coax a dog to play?

Kristapea, how did the travelling puppy do, yesterday?
Thanks for that Sue P. This pup I just brought home from the pound is very very frightened and clings to my legs constantly. She isn’t interested in the ball or nylabone I got her and her tail doesn’t wag as much as it should for a 6 month old pup. She seems a little sad. I wish I knew where she came from.
Pupper was on my lap practically the whole time. She was very quiet but didn’t get sick but did eat some food. She seems to be a little sniffly and puked this morning. We have an appointment with the vet today for a check up.

Senate Kills Habeas Amendment on Torture Bill
The Senate just killed an amendment to ensure federal courts could review the legitimacy of individual’ imprisonment on suspicion of involvement in terrorism. The amendment had been proposed by Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA), chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. “It is a fundamental protection woven into the fabric of our Nation,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), who supported the measure. It was defeated 48-51, largely along party lines.
Former torture victim Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), portrayed as a “maverick” by earlier bucking the White House on the issue of detainee treatment, voted against the amendment. The White House also opposes the changes the amendment would make to the bill. Sens. John Warner (R-VA) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who had also challenged the White House over the bill, joined McCain in voting against the amendment.
The Senate is expected to vote on — and pass — the entire bill later today.

Say a little prayer for basement snake, guys…I finally found him after looking for 3 days and it seems like he has a head cancer/tumor rather than an injury. The reptile vet said that old snakes like this often get cancer in the head. he wouldnt even see him…just would put him to sleep and I can get the wildlife crisis folks to do that for free or let nature take its course.
My friend who is a wildlife rehabilitator was going up to Norwalk so I went out and met her and she is taking him to her vet to see if we can maybe try some antibiotics or anything to take the swelling down…or if he is perceiving pain, to just have him put to sleep and Ill pay for it.
In any case, its an ugly thing but he doesnt seem to be in pain…also I didnt tape the box very well because he is so lethargic, and dont you know that he got out of the box in her car and went right for her rather than slither away. I didnt realize that she is not a snake person and so pulled over and jumped out of the car! I guess she was able to get him back in the box somehow and isnow on her way to the vet again (she felt that she had to call me to tell me that I didnt tape the box well enough….) oh well…
I feel so bad for him…hes such an old guy…but there are more…and maybe more in my very basement.
But, Ill miss him if he dies.
that’s the attitude, Sean. Or are you possessed by Jeffy? :penguin::bf:
Krista- it could take Pupper a couple of weeks to show her real personality. Try not to worry too much. I have a dog from a puppy mill who was a breeder….well, she doesnt count, I guess because her true self barks at everyone nonstop unless I hold her and calm her…but when she came homw she was very frightened and reserved, and attached to me…but she did finally play and now she is very playful….with me only…….see orchid in the pictures section)
Um, Buck was really abused as a pup and he even came around. He takes clomacalm and we’ve done this program called T-Touch, which is a calming pattern on touching animals. He was very clingy and snarly at first, but he became playful after a week or 2 with the other dogs, and is now really sweet (though always a little confused because I think the guy who had him hurt his head…like, with a boot or something. He said he thought he stepped on him and thats why he was so scared and screaming everytime the guy came near)
But thats the worst case sceneario….really, this pup is probably just afraid and doesnt know how to act. She will get used to the routine and start tearing things to shreds before you know it!! Be careful to put bitter apple on all the cords and computers and stuff, because suddenly her puppyness will come out.
Ive had alot of rescue pups and its really just a matter of time.
She may be a shy one too…
Sneezy and coughy isnt good…coulld be kennel cough or something like that. The vet will be able to tell.
In a couple of weeks you will be able to take her to the dog run and get her socialized….
She sure is cute!
Pupper is a good name…or nickname….we have Puppa, who is Lola, and Puppy, who is Angelina.
Well, things are truly crazy politically, but at the same time, the Repugs are goin down…its just really, really messy because they have no shame…and being on some sorta mission from god or the gods of get as much money as you can until youre caught, they have no shame…they answer to a higher authority.
Im happy to see that HuffPo is linking to an article that says that we get the Senate back, but it troubles me to see how many red states there are on the map pictured. I should be happy to gain a few blues, but I keep looking at the reds and wondering what theyre thinking….in god’s name, what is wrong with these people?

The 16-year-old student who told the Today Show this morning that he was in a Platte Valley High School classroom when Duane Morrison took 6 students hostage yesterday made up the story, his mother said this afternoon.
Cassidy Grigg told the Today show this morning: “You could tell that he wanted the females. He tapped me on the shoulder and he told me to leave the room. I told him, “I don’t want to leave.”
But it never happened, according to his mother, Lorena Grigg.
“Cassidy has never been dishonest in his life, but in this matter he wasnโt truthful,” she said Thursday afternoon. “He was not in the room with the kids. He wants to say heโs sorry. I know and he knows he made a huge mistake. He lost one of his dear friends.”
She said he “wanted to be a hero” but amid television crews scrambling to interview him about what he experienced, he “got caught up in the chaos.” The mother said he “feels awful” about it and that’s why he wanted to come forward and set the record straight.

Ahhh…… a rethug politician in the making.. :yuck:
Political Corruption in Israel
Uri Avnery
THIS IS a typical Israeli reaction. Perhaps typically human.
When a crisis threatens to upset the foundations of our perceptions, we tend to turn away from the main issue and concentrate all our attention on some detail. Thus we are relieved from questioning our basic beliefs and the world-view we are accustomed to. We take some detail, as small as possible, and put all the blame on it. That’s it! Found it! That’s the guilty part!
As the old song goes: “All because of a small nail!” So when a major disaster occurs, we find the small nail that caused it, and we need not look further.
For example: the Yom-Kippur war. Why did this bloody war break out at all? Why didn’t we accept President Anwar Sadat’s earlier offer of peace in exchange for the return of the Sinai? Why did our Ship of Fools blithely sail from the Six-day war to the Yom-Kippur war on a sea of arrogance?
No, such questions were not asked. But what was asked? Things like: Why didn’t the army intelligence department warn us that the Egyptians and Syrians were about to attack? Why weren’t the reserve units called up in time? Why weren’t the “instruments” (tanks and artillery) moved to the canal?
It was called “The Omission”. That was the slogan of the mass protest movement that sprang up and swept away Golda Meir and Moshe Dayan.
That’s like emptying the ashtray when a car breaks down. Now something similar is happening.

No way. A rethug would never admit the truth and apologize – no matter how much evidence to the contrary there was. And at least 36% of his fellow thugs would back him, no matter what.

Rhodes makes several big assumptions
1.That there will be an election in Nov
2. That if the Dems win things will change
3. That the thugs won’t throw a temper tantrum and declare martial law if they lose.
4. Or That in that 3 months between the election and the time the dems take office something “terrible” won’t happen.
5. That even if we survive that a return to “checks and balances” will reverse any of this legislation.

Fascism is a radical political ideology that combines elements of corporatism, authoritarianism, nationalism, militarism, anti-anarchism, anti-communism and anti-liberalism.
So what was missing before this happened ?? Now It looks a lot like the soviets took over substituting central control for corporate control.

So supposedly this torture bill will allow rape and sodomy of prisoners. Nice.
Comment by Susan Joy โ September 28, 2006 @ 5:45 pm
Too bad it doesn’t include a provision for the rape and sodomy of presidents.
:fu:
I don’t trust them either, but I honestly doubt this would have gotten through the House if the Democrats were in the majority. Even if there was a Democratic president.
Fascism is a term from the political domain, so it doesn’t apply strictly to corporations, but if you look at them, power goes strictly top-down, from the board of directors to managers to lower managers and ultimately to the people on the shop floor, typists, etc. There’s no flow of power or planning from the bottom up. Ultimate power resides in the hands of investors, owners, banks, etc.
People can disrupt, make suggestions, but the same is true of a slave society. People who aren’t owners and investors have nothing much to say about it. They can choose to rent their labor to the corporation, or to purchase the commodities or services that it produces, or to find a place in the chain of command, but that’s it. That’s the totality of their control over the corporation.
That’s something of an exaggeration, because corporations are subject to some legal requirements and there is some limited degree of public control. There are taxes and so on. But corporations are more totalitarian than most institutions we call totalitarian in the political arena.
NOAM CHOMSKY
Rachel, don’t waste my time…come on, do a good show today. A lot of news to talk about.
The thugs having control over the M$M would have crucified the dems ( and probably will crucify the dems if/when they assume power) by making up false or fake terra stories just like the Brits did about the liquid explosives. Marching in the streets of DC is not going to solve the problem unless WCW goes there with the intent of having a big bonfire complete with fried porkers. Unfortunately all the pigs will be gone by the end of this weekend. :jason::jason::jason:

I know, fred. We just give up, the struggle is useless, for we are like cattle in the feedlot. Stampede!
I think it will be “speak to power” as apposed to “speak truth to power”. The M$M being big corporations know that they are likely to be broken up if the dems every achieve complete control. ( well one can always hope):gate::omg::jason::jason::jason:

Oh, this Democratic party is in bed with corporations. I just happen to think that this particular group in power and those that enable them in Congress are a different – and far worse – breed of corrupt politicians. So, they need to go. And no, I don’t think things will suddenly be exactly the way I want them to be (for one thing, shocking as it may seem, not everybody agrees 100% with me). But, if you’re bleeding from a huge wound, you gotta stop the bleeding first. Then you can start worrying about curing the infection.
The only way to F* the M$M is to some how keep the people with the 7th grade comprehension from watching it and actually get their info from something credible. I don’t think they can tell what is credible. :sheep::sheep::sheep::omg::gate::jason::jason:

Yes, the lack of a filibuster is very disappointing. But it’s also important to keep in mind who wanted this bill, who pushed it through, and who could have have stopped it – w/o a filibuster.
And, as Fred mentioned, the traditonal media would have pillaried the Democrats. It’s an issue that not many people are really paying attention to, and “the people” have become conditioned to not having to work at understanding any issue beyond the level of “us” vs. “them.”
Personally, I think the Democrats should have had to the guts to rise to the challenge, but then what I think isn’t really important to anybody.
My rubberstamp republican congressman voted “yes,” as expected. The “moderate” Sheerwood Boehlert from the next district over (retiring because the winngnuts have opposed him as a RINO), also voted for torture. This is why these people need to go.

Keith O. is my addiction lately….
Mr. Centrist aka Bender is of course showing us all how we can change the system :bf: over the next 30 years.. but.. only if we are lucky..:gate::omg::jason::jason::jason:
Virtual VooDoo doll :rofl2::rofl2:
Keith has been really wound up lately:eek:
this country started with genocide moved on to slavery and is ending in fascism. :reaper:
Looks like we may be going to Maron’s Tuesday night’s performance in L.A.! I’ve reserved the seats and we’ll be there…unless there’s business that gets in the way…I’ll be there!
Right wing radio is turning into a hornet’s nest. A caller to the unctuous Hugh Hewitt’s show just laid into poor Spew. It was amazing that they didn’t cut him off:
“You’re such a Bush pimp”
“You lie for a living”
“Was Nixon a great president?”
Hewitt responded: “Yes”
It was a work of art.
wow!
and bob woodward is four years too freaking late with his assessment. idiot.
Susan Joy, re 131 Mwah HaHa ๐
Im a little worried that the photshop torture pics may be viewed as either a threat to who is pictured, and also viewed as in really poor taste…..not that they dont deserve it.
I just found out that another person in my neighborhood has a serious cancer…thats 2 in less than a month. One is a big lymphoma in the chest of a guy, and now this 40-ish Mom to 3 little girls (who’s husband died of cancer 1.5 years ago after a long illness) has really bad lukemia.
Then, the basement snake turns up with a huge brain tumor….sorta gives one pause as to what might be floating around in the air here….
The air, the water….
FK,
Tell us all about Marc’s performance! I wonder if he will talk about Paula Froelich, the NY Post writer who mocked Keith Olberman the other day. I believe Marc had her on MS a few times and was opposite her the one time he appeared on Good Morning America.
PJ sez: I have to admit, Rachel is (for the most part) ….
But you also have to admit that Kent Jones (alternate reality model) is the most affably agreeable second banana ever fabricated.
Kat!! That is such good news! See if you can find out anything about radio prospects!…and tell him we miss him!
Did you guys get to go to the emmys?
Web- you really think that Kent is good in this company? I think that in a setting with other great writers and performers and interacting with someone who isnt as goofy and uncomfortable as Rachel is comdeywise, he is good…but with Rachel, he loses some of his shine. They just dont have as smnooth a rappore as Kent has had with others…even with Sam he is easier to take….I think it has something with working with other comedians as opposed to working with someone who is really not a comedienne.
I think Kent is great, but definitely was better with Marc. I think Marc brought everybody he was around up a few notches. God, I wish MS hadn’t been killed.
I guess that one of Macaca’s accusers was on with Chris Matthews…I missed it, but I was listening to Sam go after him from this AM, anyway….
When Sam goes after someone or something look out.
Hey, speaking of that, I just heard that Lamont has a 10 point lead over Leiberman!!
Did you hear Kent with Sam as Lawton the other day?….he was great….It seems like Rachel only uses him as Kent newsman…maybe thats the problem. She needs more people to bounce off of.
But also, all that crap that she does like the mixology and Dr Maddow…Its just not good….She is a great political scientist and a sharp as nails political commentator, but she is not a good fluff hostess or a good comedienne….She needs a Lizz Winstead, and Kent is not ditzy enough or comfy enough in his Kent skin to pull that off. I dont get any feeling of angst or despair…its all so jolly and happy….
Really? That’s kinda the opposite of everything I’ve been reading today.
Did you guys hear about the wonderful Baghdad police academy with raining urine and feces ?
Need I ask who owns Parsons?
Kent was great with Sam as Lawton. So nice to have Sam embrace the character. Sam’s not afraid to have a funny and talented person on, and will give them the room to do their thing – unlike a Randi or an Al, who need to be the star of the show.
Melina,
I mean to say that Kent is way too syrupy and goody-two-shoes around Rachel. I agree with you that he is a jolly and happy second banana,
almost over the top in that way.
Any bets on Marc making it to Sam’s show tomorrow?
I will XM record it in any case.
I was always OK with Unfiltered, but my wife found Lizz and Rachel annoying, and I kinda picked up on that after a while. One thing that bugged me with Rachel was about Bernie Kerik, of all people. Rachel said something to the effect that “Bernie Kerik got a mail order degree from Empire State College.” Now, I’m no Kerik fan, and I didn’t get a degree from Empire St. College, but I knew people who did, and not everybody has the means and the time to go to Yale, and the people I knew had a good experience with Empire State (especially at the time, when there were few alternatives for working people to get their degrees), and probably learned a hell of a lot more than many people who went to “legit” colleges. So, I found that remark annoying and condescending. I’m sure Rachel is proud of her educational background and all, but not everybody has life circumstances that allow them to take the traditional route.
Bloody “L”, I am listening to last minutes of Rachel (and Kent). Rats
Hi Druid!
PJ ๐
Melina, poor Snake. Do you have it contained? It probably hates frozen mice. I remember when caged snakes ate real mice and things. ๐ฎ :omg::wink: ๐ฎ Eck. :omg:
My daughter in law finished her degree at Empire. My impression was that it was a good program and although she did not attend regular classes she did meet regularly with her professor and she did do a lot of work for class.
Have to Feed Fire โ
:tommygun: (teehee)
Druid! what about the knitting?
Yeah, I thought of that but I don’t care anymore. It’s time to bring this torture bullshit home to roost. People need to start putting themselves in other peoples shoes and I think they just need a little help from technology. If they can’t imagine themselves in the same situation, we should help them.
Over here in Minnesota our “Empire State” is called St. Cloud State University. I got rid of one bad apple that school from our team a few years ago, but one bad apple don’t spoil the whole bunch now.
And don’t forget that RFK Jr. teaches at Pace University in Westchester county which I believe also has a similar rep.
The schools that everyone should dismiss are Bob Jones U. and Hillsdale College and other fundie schools of that ilk.
One of the ways that the success of a college is measured is by the success of its graduates. That gives colleges like Harvard, which attract wealthy kids, kids from successful families and kids with good SAT scores. That makes it very easy for Harvard to be a success.
I’m not sure its a better school than Brooklyn College which is part of the City University system.
But don’t you think that one of the main reasons those graduates succeed is because they have money and ties?
Did I miss the name? :pup: ๐ฎ This Nation needs HELP:!: ๐
Kristapea, that is exactly why they succeed. And, they provide a network for other Harvard students that helps them to succeed and I don’t think it has much to do with the education they receive at Harvard.
Bush made it through Yale and Harvard Business School, where family ties count. I’ll bet he couldn’t make it through Brooklyn College where where hard work and good test marks determine grades and graduation.
I’m still workin’ on it. :pup: She’s so mellow that I keep thinking she’s gonna get more confidence and be completely different. But, Annie keeps coming back to my mind. She’s such a sweetie, she deserves the name Sweet Jane more than Sweet Jane did! Jane was sweet with people but got into her share of dog fights ๐
I’m retarded. I meant hi not high
Yup Sue P. I think you’re right. My grades could have gotten me into Harvard or Yale. But I would never have gotten enough money unless the Pell Grant payed the same percentage of my education there as they did at ASU. I should have finished at ASU back in the 80’s because it was so damned cheap! ASU was $492 per semester back then. Now it’s like, shit, I don’t even know! Way more, probably at least triple that.
The pupster really loves those greenies, she’s workin’ on one now. :pup:
send him a myspace message and invite him out travis!
I think I’m quitting
:yippee:send him a myspace message one time i even got a personal response!
:penguin:jeffy is so happy that we get to torture people OFFICIALY now!
Kristapea , Annie is a sweet name or maybe Mary Jane. I think they were sweet shoes and also for :dancers: (and not these weird dancers:wink: whom I  :rofl2:)
Travis come back:pup:…:yawn::cold:
