Not much to say this morning (except don’t forget to tune in to the return of Mike Malloy on Nova M radio at 9PM EST tonight), so I’ll just make a dutiful plug for MoveOn’s “Call for Change” campaign, which will allow you to use your home computer and telephone to make calls to Democratic-leaning voters (in other words, you don’t have to cold call any Republican meanies) in order to help stimulate the GOTV effort. According to Eli Pariser:
Basically, it allows people to log onto www.callforchange.org from their home computers and then phone target voters in the 30+ top House and Senate races around the nation. Our goal is to make 5 million phone calls to inconsistent voters who lean Democratic – we recently passed 1.5 million. Our members chipped in millions to allow MoveOn to buy the most up-to-date lists, acquire consumer data, and use micro-targeting to ensure that every call is maximized. We used the Busby and Lamont campaigns to test our program and make it a good user experience. After Busby, a Yale study compared our phone program to others and found that it boosted turnout the most.
Part of the reason we designed the program the way we did was to make it work for parents and others who’ve want to chip in but only have 20 or 30 minutes free to volunteer at the end of a long work day – not just the super-activists. Also, folks in areas without competitive races or who live in rural areas far from campaign offices no longer have to be excluded from GOTV.
So, if you happen to have some spare time to sit down and make a few phone calls, this could make a difference in the tight races come next Tuesday.

I filled out my absentee ballot last night. But when I tried to mail it this morning, the mailbox was GONE!
Seriously. The mailbox in front of the convenience store down the street has been removed. WTF?
I would mail it at work, but I don’t trust one of the guys in the mail room to not throw my ballot away. So I’ll wait until after work and walk over to the Doo Doo Brown Store across the street. Unless THAT mailbox has been removed too.
It’s hard being a patriot these days. But if we can get back at least the House, and maybe even the Senate, it’s worth it.
:fire::fire::fire:
The Republicans stole your mailbox! :omg:
oh man. I know there’s hanky panky down in Fla but this is ridiculous…

They changed my polling place and I don’t know that part of town so I suppose I should go early to investigate (I’m a space cadet – with directions – serioiusly – so I do have to do these “ahead of time” things) I’m going to vote no matter what!
Don’t they just check your voter registration, and then run it through the shredder? Maybe you could shred it yourself, and save the state the postage.
that was a good post this morning, PJ, about what Move On.org is doing. I may sign up. It seems like something I can do that won’t take more cash out of wallet
In Key House Races, Democrats Run to the Right
By SHAILA DEWAN and ANNE E. KORNBLUT
ASHEVILLE, N.C., Oct. 28 — In their push to win back control of the House, Democrats have turned to conservative and moderate candidates who fit the profiles of their districts more closely than the profile of the national party.
One such candidate, Heath Shuler, was courted by Republicans to run for office in 2001. Mr. Shuler, 34, is a retired National Football League quarterback who is running in the 11th Congressional District in North Carolina. He is an evangelical Christian and holds fast to many conservative social views, like opposition to abortion rights.
“My guess is that if Democrats are in the majority, it’s going to be because of these New Democrat, Blue Dog candidates out there winning in these competitive swing districts,” Representative Ron Kind of Wisconsin, co-chairman of a caucus of centrist House Democrats, said in an interview.
But if candidates like Mr. Shuler do help the Democrats gain majority control of Congress, it could come at a political price, which may include tensions in the party between its new centrists and its more liberal political base.

hey everyone- My experience with the MOve On calling thing is that you get alot of people who have been called 5 times already.
Ned lamont also has a call thing like that, which I think lets you call in your zip code….Im to the point where calling is sorta redundant because people around here dont want to talk about it anymore…though when I wear my buttons out, everyone wants to talk about what an asshole Bush is….
So, as Chris Matthews was saying on the Today show this morning, its like the dunking booth and everyone wants to see Bush get dunked!
Mexico riot police re-take Oaxaca
Mexican riot police have seized control of the southern city of Oaxaca, ending a five-month occupation by striking teachers and leftist activists.
The demonstrators had been calling for the resignation of the state governor.
The 4,000 federal officers, backed by armoured trucks and helicopters, met little resistance. One man is reported to have died in the operation.

Good Morning. I have a liberal confession. I signed up to go to a Moveon call party last night and didn’t go. :omg: I just didn’t feel like being around people I didn’t know and I don’t like calling people on the phone. Not much of an excuse, I know.
morning Fred and Krista…
I keep getting house party e mails from Move on…they’re all too far away and I’d probably be too shy to do something like that…
I guess Oaxacans don’t have the impeachment tool.
I don’t like calling people either. Not much in person, either, come to think of it.
mornin’ all:
melina, I sent you a reply just moments ago.
re the move on thing: don’t they keep track of the numbers they give out to make sure people don’t get called by them multiple times? or is it that various campaigns are using the same lists?
i’ll check with them this week. might be fun to talk to folks in several different parts of the country.
sj: a caller on thom h’s suggested that we should just all switch to the republican party and take over. perhaps that’s what these guys are doing… the gop is becoming so stinky, they’re just calling themselves democrats. wouldn’t be the first time.
Maybe I’ll call a few people this evening in the privacy of my own home.
Oh I agree, Roxie – the Republican party has moved to the right, so the displaced in that party are calling themselves Democrats. But this has been happening for a long time. Actually I a disagree with the article that the dem party has moved to the left since Clinton. I sure don’t see it.
Just tell them where you want to daven (pray), and they’ll find you an Orthodox minyan…

The Pumpkin Gutter
It can now be revealed that less than one month ago, a red heifer was born in Israel. After the heifer’s owner contacted the Temple Institute, on Friday, April 5th, 2001, Rabbi Menachem Makover and Rabbi Chaim Richman traveled to the farm where the heifer is located, to inspect and validate her status. The rabbis found her to be kosher and were satisfied that this heifer could indeed be a candidate to be used in the process of purification described in the book of Numbers, chapter 19. This is an important development towards the rebuilding of the Holy Temple.
Tradition records that a red heifer in our generation is a herald of the Messianic era. It is certainly an important development towards the rebuilding of the Holy Temple. Our sages taught that Israelís redemption can be compared to the dawn. “In the beginning, it progresses very slowly…but as it continues, it grows brighter and brighter

Oct 28, 5:19 PM (ET)BOISE, Idaho (AP) – No black cat will cross your path this Halloween, not if a northern Idaho animal shelter can help it. Like many shelters around the country, the Kootenai Humane Society in Coeur d’Alene is prohibiting black cat adoptions from now to Nov. 2, fearing the animals could be mistreated in Halloween pranks – or worse, sacrificed in some satanic ritual.
The risk may be remote, said the shelter’s executive director, Phil Morgan.
“It’s kind of an urban legend. But in the humane industry it’s pretty typical that shelters don’t do adoptions of black cats or white bunnies because of the whole satanic sacrificial thing,” Morgan said. “If we prevent one animal from getting hurt, then it serves its purpose.”
Out of 97 cats at the shelter, 28 are black, Morgan said.

Swedes think US ‘greatest threat to peace’
Swedes think that the United States and North Korea pose the greatest threats to world peace, according to the results of a poll released on Sunday. Nearly one in three Swedes, 29 percent, think that the US is the biggest threat to peace on earth, the poll, commissioned by Axess Television, reveals.
North Korea was a close runner up to the United States – 28 percent of respondents thought that the secretive communist dictatorship was most dangerous.
Iran was in third place, at 18 percent. The poll results showed that more people between the ages of 16 and 29 saw America as the biggest threat, while a majority of those over 60 picked North Korea.
People’s opinions were strongly linked to their political preferences. Left and Green party voters were more likely to choose the US, with 68 percent of Left and 57 percent of Green Party voters believing that America was most dangerous. Only 20 percent of Moderate or Christian Democrat voters shared that view.

Thats not as big a number as I would have thought. 😮
NEW YORK — Stocks fluctuated Monday as investors tried to assess the health of the economy following a lackluster sales report from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and news of weak consumer spending last month.
Wal-Mart’s disappointing sales added to concerns that arose Friday with the report that the country’s economy, as measured by gross domestic product, was estimated to have risen a lower-than-expected 1.6 percent in the third quarter. That sent stocks sliding at the end of a week in which the Dow Jones industrial average had set new closing records for four straight sessions.
Adding to investors’ economic concerns, the Commerce Department reported that consumer spending rose an anemic 0.1 percent in September, the smallest increase in 10 months. Personal income, however, was up 0.5 percent. Hopes for a strong holiday season have driven up shares of retailers and stock over all in recent months.
”Personal spending was less than expected but then personal income was better than expected,” said Stuart Freeman, chief equity strategist for A.G. Edwards & Sons. He contends that investors will grapple with sometimes negative and seemingly contradictory economic data as they try to determine whether the economy will pull off a soft landing after the Federal Reserve’s 17 straight interest rate increases that ended in July.

Morning, Seditionists!
Just want to add my input to ask each of you to do something this week or this weekend to help out your local campaigns for the Democratic party. Whether it be your congress or a governor’s race…get involved!
It is really great to be involved on a grassroots level, plus it adds energy to the campaign.
I got to meet the Democratic candidate, Jim Brandt, who is running against Dana Rohrabacher. He was really appreciative of the efforts of the volunteers.
They need our support beyond blogging and emails. Donate $20. Give an hour or two – but get involved.
We have to win back the House and Senate.
Have a great one today…. :sammy:
I was called by Moveon.org last week and agreed to do a phone banking shift. It is extremely easy and after about seven calls your shift is over. (you can continue to call if you choose to, however, you are not asked to do so).
Personally, I’d much rather give money than talk to a stranger on the phone; however, if everybody devoted one shift to the progressive cause, we could make a difference.
If we are sincere about wanting change, we all should do something positive toward achieving those ends.
If you make some calls, you’ll feel better. I promise!

ALLEN ARREST RECORDS CONTROVERSY: ALLEN REFUSES TO RELEASE DOCUMENTS DETAILING HIS ARREST RECORD
Allen’s Multiple Arrest Warrants Could Have Been for Anything From Assault to Disorderly Conduct to Battery
Democrats are demanding that George Allen stop stonewalling and immediately release records addressing why multiple warrants were issued for his arrest in 1974 while he was a student at the University of Virginia. The court records of his arrests are missing but one of the few official documents detailing the circumstances surrounding his arrests is Allen’s application to the Virginia Bar Association. Allen has so far refused to release that information.

stock market:
you cannot ever believe the financial pundits. whichever way the nys market moves on a daily/weekly basis is pretty much completely manipulated by the “specialists” — the firms that “make a market” in the various stocks. they are charged with the “duty” of keeping an “orderly market”. they do this by selling “short” from their own corporate account when demand exceeds supply. (selling stock they don’t yet own.) after this buying pressure is exhausted, they “allow” prices to drop so that they can “cover their short positions” — buying the stock that they already sold for less than they sold it for. day to day prices are thereby totally manipulated to the advantage of the “specialist firms,” goldman sachs, for example.
a reason can always be found for these
flucuations. the “analysts” featured on the financial teevee shows often work for these firms and help herd investors in the direction they want them to move in the short term.
a guy named Richard Ney wrote a couple of books about this phenomena. “The Wall Street Jungle” is a great read if you find this stuff interesting. he states that you can always tell what they want you to do by what they tell you is happening.

The call for change thing sounds like something good for the cowards amongst us, since they’ve supposedly spent money to get lists that target left-leaning voters who don’t vote in every election. So, it’s more of a “don’t forget to go out and vote this year, ‘cuz we need ya,” than trying to convince somebody to vote one way or another (less chance of getting hollered at). They say the pilot programs for Lamont and Busby worked out very well.

Lobbyists Won’t Like What Pelosi Has in Mind
By Jeffrey H. Birnbaum
Monday, October 30, 2006; D01
Odds are that lobbying in the House of Representatives is about to get harder.
If Democrats gain the 15 seats they need to win control of the House — and most analysts think they will — one of the first things the new House will do is restrict or end outright a slew of lobbying practices.
In a little-publicized statement, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the House Democratic leader, has promised to change the chamber’s rules to reflect the provisions of her not-so-modestly-named Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2006. The months-old measure would, among other things, prohibit House members from accepting gifts and travel from lobbyists or from organizations that employ lobbyists.

For the record, “Sock” (how charming that he nicknames himself after a sweaty, smelly article of clothing) claimed that it was not an actual death threat, and that his words were being twisted by the LIBERAL DEMOCRAT Stephie.
Of course, this is a guy who included his address and phone number in the “threat.” Maybe next time he can cut out the middleman entirely and call the FBI himself.

[Crispin] Miller says: “We need the national turnout to be very high because the GOP intends to steal this one, too. In other words, people should turn out to vote, not because they can be confident that their particular choices will prevail. It would be irresponsible to offer that assurance. Rather, the American people must turn out to vote as an essential protest on behalf of free and fair elections. To turn out on Nov. 2 [sic] is to make a statement of no confidence in Bush or his ‘elections,’ and a call for the salvation of US democracy. The higher the turnout, the harder it will be for the Republicans. to spin their looming ‘upset victory’ as legitimate. That’s why I advise against early and absentee voting — because it will dilute the impact of the actual E-Day turn-out.”
So Miller is confident that the republicans will prevail on E-Day. Do you agree?
I wonder what he has in mind for post-election activities?
What are your plans for the Day after E-Day? And the next day….

I”m going to Long Island to help the Democrat who’s running against that disgusting Peter King.
With the appearance of electronic voting machine issues in the M$M the thugs are obviously getting their base and the loony Reich ready to yell fraud fraud fraud !!! at any race that’s close. If 2004 is any indication the legal action will go on and on mean while the incumbent will stay in office ..baring the need for a special election of course.:reaper::reaper::rant1::rant1:
I’m just pissed that my state is all electronic now. Even with Corzine in charge, I don’t trust the machines. I’ll have to see if it’s not too late to vote in advance.
Sen Harris-R Fla.
Several South Florida voters say the choices they touched on the electronic screens were not the ones that appeared on the review screen – the final voting step.
:omg:
Election officials say they aren’t aware of any serious voting issues. But in Broward County, for example, they don’t know how widespread the machine problems are because there’s no process for poll workers to quickly report minor issues and no central database of machine problems. [That would defeat the whole purpose, wouldn’t it?]
In Miami-Dade, incidents are logged and reported daily and recorded in a central database. Problem machines are shut down. Votes are retained.
“In the past, Miami-Dade County would send someone to correct the machine on site,” said Chester Cola, county supervisor of elections. “Now,” he said, “We close the machine down and put a seal on it. Then go to the backroom, and wheel out another.”
He later touched the screen for gubernatorial candidate Jim Davis, a Democrat, but the review screen repeatedly registered the Republican, Charlie Crist. “That is the will of God,” he reportedly whispered, before moving on to touch the screen for the senatorial candidate.
That’s exactly the kind of problem that sends conspiracy theorists into high gear – especially in South Florida, where a history of problems at the polls have made voters particularly skittish.
“I’m shocked! Shocked, because I really want … to trust that the issues with irregularities with voting machines have been resolved,” said a paralegal, assigned to look into the problems. “It worries me because the races are so close. Even more troubling, this puts the longshot races like the senate race into play.”
:pup::doh:
Diebolts GEM ( General Election Management) software has been in use in some 80% of local/state election offices since the late 1980’s..
This software is used to totalize the votes and tabulate them for presentation. It makes no difference whether the voting was on paper, punch cards or an electronic voting machine it is relatively easy to mess with the data bases to copy columns or parts of columns from one candidate to another.
It takes some complicity on the part of the local/state officials to do this. Twenty eight states have Republican executive branches/legislatures and rethugs are:evil::reaper::reaper:
I saw that they’re already having problems in Florida, with people coming to the “review” screen, only to find that their votes had flipped from the Dem to the Rep. Supposedly, when the touchscreen machines are “heavily used,” they need to be re-calibrated rather frequently (kinda like when you first get your PDA, if you know what I mean). Why does it always seem to flip in favor of the Republicans, though?
Anyhow, if you’re using one of those machines, check the review page very carefully.
We have the mechanical lever machines here, which everybody seems to think are safe, but really they aren’t. In fact, they’re more likely to have errors, and there’s really no way to know if your vote registered properly.
Paper ballot are the way to go. Circle the damn name – can’t get clearer than that.
Senator Katherine “pitviper” Harris-R, Fla.
:pup:
Colorado is still going to use the optical scan machines this year. The E voting machines will be used only for people with disabilities and early voting at the county election offices. Absentee ballots are all optically scanned by the county election officials. but.. All the counties in Colorado use the GEM software.:eek: :reaper::reaper::reaper:

Despite a large British military presence at the headquarters in Basra Palace, a private security assessment has advised the consul general and her staff to leave the building after experiencing regular mortar attacks in the last two months.

Replay will record any sounds that go to the output stage of your sound card. I think you just click record. I don’t have Replay on this computer so I am only guessing what button you push.
Thanks fred.

Hello Krista
Voter suppression in Westchester County! :omg:
An urgent Appeal from the folks at Troma Films (TromaDance Film Festival)
Greetings from Tromaville!
For 32 years, the Troma Team and I’ve been making our own brand independent films far removed (and happily in that truth may I add) from the Hollywood cookie-cutter system. Some of our films have been great and some of them have been, well, “Sgt. Kabukiman, NYPD”. But what can be said about all of them is that they have been memorable.
Our newest film, Poultrygeist: Night Of The Chicken Dead is our best film yet!
And yet I fear it’s doomed to failure or worse: to be completely ignored.
You see, for years people have heard me complain that Troma’s films (that’s right, I said film… 35mm film, damnit!!) have long been shut out of the system… marginalized or just plain dismissed. Blockbuster won’t carry us. The major theatrical chains won’t play us. The press won’t even call us back when we ask them to watch our films!
You might chalk this rant up as just another “Lloyd’s roids” type rant, but consider this: Twenty years ago Troma was just one of over thirty truly independent film companies. Ten years ago, Troma was just one of twenty truly independent film companies. Today, Troma is the ONLY truly independent film company left.
Why is Troma that last man standing? Now this is not boasting, quite the opposite in fact… For I feel that we too are not long for this celluloid coil.
Poultrygeist deserves at least the attention that some lesser films (e.g. “Snakes On A Plane”) backed by the majors get. A lot of blood, sweat and tears went into making this film (mostly belonging to the dedicated crew who worked for nothing but crappy food and a love of indie cinema) and a lot more bodily fluids will be excreted from my pores if this film goes the way of my last couple. And even though we know this film to be among our best, truthfully there is no way for us to compete (promotion wise) with the majors to prove … At least there is no way that will not cost $50 million.
Much like production of the film itself, we need the help of dedicated, innovated, driven people to volunteer their time and creativity into forming a grass roots marketing campaign, which can raise awareness about this film!
But this is NOT just about Poultrygeist! This is about sending a message, perhaps spawning a movement! If we can wake up the world and show them that there are more choices than what the fast food conglomerates have to offer, we can birth a sort of artistic revolution, where once again the little man can get his art seen by the masses without selling his soul to the masters.
With your help, we might just be able to make Poultrygeist a success. We might be able to get the press to cover it, or movie theaters to play it. We might be able to get people to consider it for long enough to realize what a unique and great film it is!
So I get down on my knees, and ask you a favor. If Troma has ever made you laugh, or smile, or vomit: could you spare the time to consider the following list, any item of which could help us spread the word?
BY ANY (legal that is) MEANS NESCESSARY!!!!
1) If you have a MySpace account, can you make Poultrygeist your friend, and put it in your Top 8 friends?
http://www.myspace.com/poultrygeistmovie
(*Also, list the movie in your favorite films!)
2) Can you watch and vote on the YouTube clips we have up?
The music video is at http://youtube.com/watch?v=q7YFgQetG60
The trailer is at http://youtube.com/watch?v=8VXDbUE3Et8
There’s also a leaked clip at http://youtube.com/watch?v=xX7hN_n_DWQ
3) If you have a website or a blog, can you encourage your readers to support the film? Maybe even repost this letter!
The MySpace link is http://www.myspace.com/poultrygeistmovie
And the YouTube clips are at http://youtube.com/results?search_query=poultrygeist&search=Search
4) Create your own fan sites! We will link them with all of ours!
5) Create your own stickers, stencils and posters and tag the country!!!
6) And if you have any other ideas, or suggestions, of how we can create awareness for this film, let me know at lloyd@troma.com! I’m new to this web world, and I’d be really grateful for any help!
7) Finally, and this is the most important part… can you consider forwarding this email to everyone you know? That would be the biggest help.
Thanks for your support! Poultrygeist was made almost entirely through the efforts of volunteers around the world — from the food served on set, to the 500 cast members. I’d hate to let these people down with a great film that no-one sees.
Unless you help get the bird… err word out, the swan song of my 40 year career may be just another zombie chicken musical which no one gives a cluck about.
Thank you for anything you can do!
Yours Tromatically,
xoxo
Lloyd
I must have missed that…where did they say? I know there were some problems in my district last year between Nick Spano and Andrea Stewart Cousins
If you had been listening to Rachel, you would know the specifics.
Who won an election by 18 votes in 2004? State senate race. Westchester. Anyway, Republicans are screeching Voter Fraud! Trying to enlist the Sheriff to go check addresses.
Here’s a story from Capitol Hill Blue re: Westchester Co.

Voter suppression. Not down in Florida, but down in Westchester. Sort of reminds me of something Malcolm X said.
