Well, it’s Thursday again, and it’s supposed to be damn near 70 degrees here today, which is pretty amazing for halfway through November. Our new Governor was in town yesterday, to reaffirm his campaign commitment to put money into revitalizing Upstate NY. I certainly hope it happens, and winds up being more than just a big money grab for a bunch of crooked developers. We’ll see what happens, I guess, but we’ll all be a lot better off when George Pataki is finally, officially, gone. Oh well, a lot to do today, so I guess I better get on with it.

President George Bush has told senior advisers that the US and its allies must make “a last big push” to win the war in Iraq and that instead of beginning a troop withdrawal next year, he may increase US forces by up to 20,000 soldiers, according to sources familiar with the administration’s internal deliberations.
Mr Bush’s refusal to give ground, coming in the teeth of growing calls in the US and Britain for a radical rethink or a swift exit, is having a decisive impact on the policy review being conducted by the Iraq Study Group chaired by Bush family loyalist James Baker, the sources said.

In an interview with Amy Goodman of Democracy Now!, former presidential candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) called for an end to American financial support of the war effort in Iraq and for immediate troop withdrawal.
“We need to get out,” said Kucinich, responding to a comment by a member of a conservative think tank. “And we need to get out through cutting off funds. Once we determine to cut off funds, the money is in the pipeline for an orderly withdrawal.”

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez is losing influence worldwide and his “rhetorical bombs” against President George W. Bush have back-fired, a senior U.S. official said on Wednesday.
Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns, currently the no. 2 official in the State Department, pointed to Venezuela’s failure to win a seat on the U.N. Security Council as a sign of the firebrand Venezuelan leader’s waning importance.
“People see him for what he is, he is somebody who divides, who throws little bombs — rhetorical bombs into rooms — and he seeks to tear people down,” Burns told a security conference at the State Department.

United States President George Bush was informed on Tuesday of an initiative to establish a center under his name in Israel, as a sign of gratitude for his support for the country and its security.
Outgoing Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Daniel Ayalon asked Bush for the go-ahead to establish such a center during a farewell meeting with the president and his deputy, Dick Cheney.
Bush told Ayalon that “freedom” would be a worthy subject for the center to focus on.

Storm destroys skating rink full of preschoolers
MONTGOMERY, Alabama (AP) — Lines of powerful thunderstorms pelted the South with heavy wind, rain and hail Wednesday, turning a skating rink into a hulk of twisted metal soon after the 31 preschoolers and four adults inside had fled to the only part of the building that turned out to be safe.
One child suffered a broken bone and another a cut to the head. But everyone else emerged unharmed from the crumpled wreck of the Fun Zone Skate Center in Montgomery, Alabama. The facility doubled as a day-care facility.
“I’m amazed that anyone got out of there,” said Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright.
Several states were battered by the storms, which unleashed tornadoes and straight-line winds that overturned mobile homes and tractor-trailers, uprooted trees and knocked down power lines. At least one person was killed and several injured.

Many Say Leadership Race Damages Democrats’ Image
By CARL HULSE
Published: November 16, 2006
WASHINGTON, Nov. 15 — House members acknowledged on Wednesday that the increasingly bitter contest for majority leader was sullying the image of unity and new direction that Democrats hoped to convey.
“It’s four days that we haven’t talked about our message and built on the euphoria,” said Representative Ellen O. Tauscher, a California Democrat who is supporting Representative Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland in the leadership vote on Thursday. “We had such perfect pitch last week.”…
***
The race has not broken along conventional ideological lines. Mr. Murtha, a staunch conservative on most issues with the exception of his highly publicized opposition to the Iraq war, enjoys support from some of the most liberal Democrats. Mr. Hoyer, the more liberal of the two, has attracted strong backing from moderates and centrists, as well as some of the most seasoned House Democrats.
It has also left Democrats and Republicans in both the House and Senate straining to understand Ms. Pelosi’s strategy.
They wonder why, in her moment of victory, she injected herself into a leadership fight that will end with the selection of her rival or her own choice, a lawmaker criticized for his ethics record, after an election in which Democrats campaigned on a clean-government theme….

Ritual to Jinx President (Chimp)
A voodoo ritual has been performed to jinx President George Bush during his trip to Indonesia.
Black magic practitioner Ki Gendeng Pamungkas slit the throat of a goat and a small snake and then stabbed a black crow in the chest during the ceremony.
He mixed their blood with spice and broccoli before drinking some of the potion and smearing some on his face.
“I don’t hate Americans, but I don’t like Bush,” he said.

Unleashing a new kind of DNA analyzer on a 38,000-year-old fragment of fossilized Neanderthal bone, scientists have reconstructed a portion of that creature’s genetic code — a technological tour de force that has researchers convinced they will soon know the entire DNA sequence of the closest cousin humans ever had.
Such a feat, deemed impossible even a few years ago, could tell a lot about what Neanderthals were like, such as their hair and skin color and their relative facility with language, according to scientists in Germany and California who released the new results yesterday. It could also clear up what sort of relationship existed between Neanderthals and the first modern humans — including whether the two interbred after their evolutionary trajectories diverged.

Battle Royal looms for France’s Socialists
The woman hoping to become France’s first Madame la Présidente faces a big hurdle today in the race for the Elysée Palace as Socialist Party members vote to choose their candidate for next year’s elections.
Ségolène Royal, dubbed “the Madonna of the polls” because of her public popularity over the past year, said she was confident of victory, despite the fact that her lead has recently narrowed over her two rivals, the former prime minister Laurent Fabius and the former finance minister Dominique Strauss-Kahn.
Ms Royal, 53, a former junior minister who came out of nowhere to become France’s most talked-about politician, said she had emerged strengthened from a month of primary campaigning, including six debates with her opponents.
“It was the other two who wanted these debates because they doubted my capabilities. But … my legitimacy is no longer in question,” she said.
“I am the only one who can win against the Right. I embody the profound change people are crying out for. Many see me as the candidate against the powers that be. For the symbolic father of the nation to be a woman – now that’s a revolution.”

Comment by fred — November 16, 2006 @ 5:23 am
Carville is coming across these days like a aging wrestler who has been slammed headfirst into a turnbuckle too many times. He grabs any mic he can find and screams that he can and will kick Dean’s ass if Dean has the guts to get into the ring with him.
This is an especially strange analogy for me, because I stopped watching wrestling in my younger days when I grew out of it and got interested in girls. Maybe Carville is still mentally stuck in 7th grade. It would explain his lack of interest in women, since Matalin has always struck me as having all the warmth and femininity of an Erector set.
The 50-state plan is a winner. James Carville is not. Case closed.

America may have voted in a new Congress, but the Bush
administration shows no signs of slowing its assault on our
western wildlands.
The Bureau of Land Management is poised to approve a plan to
drill 24 new gas wells — and construct a maze of roads and
pipelines — in the spectacular White River wilderness in
northeastern Utah. We need your urgent action to help block this
attack: the deadline for public comments on the plan is *this
Monday, November 20th.*
Go to http://www.savebiogems.org/redrock/takeaction
and tell the BLM to hold off on approving this proposal until it
has studied its full potential impacts on the White River
wilderness and adjacent wildlands.
If drilled, these would be some of the first wells on lands that
the BLM itself has concluded were worthy of strict wilderness
protections.
The towering sandstone cliffs and deep canyons of the White
River region — part of our Redrock Wilderness BioGem — are a
refuge for deer, waterfowl, golden eagles and even the
endangered peregrine falcon. According to the BLM, “The
spectacular scenery of the White River provides a dramatic
backdrop for the hiker, rafter, canoeist, and for fishing
enthusiasts who visit this unique area.”
Over the past few years, the BLM has approved the construction
of roads, pipelines and compressor stations to the north, east
and west of the White River wilderness. But it has never
examined the cumulative impacts of this development on the
region’s natural values.
Go to http://www.savebiogems.org/redrock/takeaction
and urge the BLM not to rush to approve this dangerous drilling
plan.
Thank you for all of your efforts to protect Utah’s iconic
canyonlands.
Sincerely,
Frances Beinecke

Gee, nobody asked Carville about his stabbing Kerry in the back during the time when they were considering court challenges to the vote, did they? What a surprise; our media is usually so thorough and fair.
Tha’s why if Pelosi hadn’t supported Murtha, we’d get stories about how she’s not really worried about getting us out of Iraq, how she doesn’t support her friends, that she just stands aside and doesn’t get involved in important contests that effect her and she won’t be a strong leader, etc etc ad nauseum. These Washington people are just bad people, plain and simple. You see where Karl Rove and Richard Nixon came from? You need a Hitler to deal with these bastards.

Hate to do it, but the poor dog has a dumb-shit owner. If the dog was trained off-leash I wouldn’t do anything. What is wrong with people?

BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Passengers from up to six Baghdad minibuses may have been abducted after being stopped at a fake security checkpoint in the Iraqi capital on Thursday, police and local residents said.
“We don’t know how many people may be involved,” a source at Baghdad police headquarters said.
Residents in west Baghdad said they had seen men in uniform stopping minibuses and taking passengers away. The police source said it appeared up to six buses were involved.
Such minibuses, the main form of public transport in the city, typically carry a dozen or more travelers.

All the fuckin student had to do was comply. It’s his on stupid fault.

It’s revenge for the taking of American hostages in Tehran back in 1979. Paybacks are a bitch punk!

He wasn’t tasered, he was stunned. A taser shoots a metal dart that sticks on the body, and a massive electric shock is delivered by a wire running from the dart to the taser. This guy got hit with your garden variety electric stungun. He is well capable of standing up after a few seconds, BUT HE DIDN’T WANT TO! HE WAS A FUCKING HIPPY LOSER WHO WANTED TO MAKE AS MUCH NOISE AS POSSIBLE TO GARNER AS MUCH SYMPATHY AS HE COULD FROM ALL YOU BLEEDING HEART TYPES! Mission accomplished.
BigMikeX21 (8 minutes ago)
I’ve been tasered before, it hurts like hell when they actually taser you but when they release the trigger no more pain. I can’t believe what a pussy this guy was screaming the entire time. lol

OMG this has to be one of the funniest videos on YOUTUBE to date!
I havent laughed this hard in a long time!

This is clearly a use of a tazer as a torture device. He is not resisting actively, he is simply resisting passively, he is not a danger, he is handcuffed. This is abuse of power, no question. It has nothing to do with being anti-police, any decent cop would decry this blatantly unnecessary abuse.

When a cop tells you to stop, you better listen.
Order and compliance is their job.
Favor to ask: I have not been able to catch any of Marc’s latest radio appearances. Last night I forwarded from my home email to my work email, a link Marc sent yesterday for one or some of his recent shows, but the new spam filter at my job is blocking my own emails from home (I’ve got a call in to our computer admin person about it). I looked on aar and at marcmaron.com, but couldn’t find any links. Can anyone here steer me to any links to Marc’s latest audio files (I’m doing mindless desk work, could use THE FUNNY). Thanks all.
Do I head Rhodes + Shultz both saying thanks a bunch for electing demodorps :nana::nana::nana:
If you mean sedition radio, there’s a link over on the right, under multimedia. Click the listen link when you get there.
I heard Randi-baby say that she was responsible for the Democratic victories in the election, ‘cuz she’s the one that got out the voters.
um, what’s this black line dashboard thing, pj? it’s kinda dark and not as friendly looking as the rest of the blog, inho
Hey, in the woot off, right now a pair of cordless phones with bluetooth (for some unknown reason) and USB, so you can load your address book into ’em. But why, oh why, are they 2.4GHz? If only they were 900MHz, I’d go for it.
I think you’re seeing things, FK. 🙄
Their are some Maron videos on YouTube (search Marc Maron). Our kind host usually puts a link to Marc’s Friday Sam Seder appearances up not long after the show. There is always thesnotgreensea link up there on the right and a number of related sites like Jim Earl.
BTW, if you’re out there in the vicinity of Sacramento, you can catch Marc tonight thru Saturday night at the Punchline. Maybe you’ll even get to see Ahnuld.
Hey everyone. Someone will be looking at my computer tomorrow hopefully. My house is so lonely w/o internet. 😥
Yeah, ours was down for almost a whole day a couple weekends ago, and it was pretty horrible.
OK…I got back in…this password and case sensitive thing is a drag…and my linksys went down, creating such havoc that Im all behind….so now Ive finally got one coming with the new firmware installed…can you believe that they wold replace one that wouldnt accept the new firmware for a known problem, with one that still didnt have the new firmware…and not bother telling me to try to download it…and then when it goes haywire again, they give me all this tourble because I want to be sure that theyve stopped shipping the ones with the old program in them!…
I told them that I was ready to make a web page about this problem and write to leo laporte and diggnation….maybe news 4 on your side!
ex- if you cant get sedition radio for whatever reason one of us can transfer the shows to you via any IM program…..
so let me know because I think I still have all the shows he did recently….
But I have to run out and give Ben some school supplies and photographs for a project due tomorrow.
krista….wish I could help…seems like dell has some great deals on pretty cheap yet powerful new systems that can be had for payments at 0% interest…I jusy finished paying off the laptop this month…it was a little bit more than I ouwldve spent but I wanted a big screen.
As much as I hate Dell, I think that they have worked out alot of their kinks lately.
We just need to strike down nafta and get back to paying people here, or taxing companies for sending jobs there….
My friend had a problem with her new apple setup and said that apple tech support is so excellent…
Im ready to buy a different router and wish I oculd switch everything…but Id be unhappy if I couldnt open it up and mess around inside.
Thesnotgreensea has almost every episode of MS and TMMS, and he also has Marc on for Jerry Springer, as well as a collection of bits from those shows and some Earl and Lank and other stuff. There are links to Marc and Jim on Springer posted over in our Forums.
No problems with my Linksys router. Have the non-stock firmware that does all kinds of nifty stuff loaded on it. I’ve heard complaints about their tech support but, well, I never bother with tech support. Had the old worked one for quite a while, but had a power surge that killed it. Had to get a replacement in a hurry (things get nasty around here when the Internet isn’t working), so I bought a Dlink one in the store (all they had). It crapped out on me in a hurry, so I have the Linksys WRT54G (got a WAP54G, too). No problems yet, knock on wood.
For what Apple charges, they ought to be excellent. But, really, I thought they never needed any support (always wondered why everybody always paid for that AppleCare stuff, if nothing ever went wrong).
Just make everything all lowercase, that way you won’t have to remember. I mean, I might make things a bit more complicated for my online banking, but for here, well, I don’t think you need to get too awfully tricky.
Ok, so how old or recent is what I’m hearing now at shoutcast? Lawton demanding Toby Keith, Mort Morntinson on Sam Alderson…
Hopefully it’s just a fan, KP. That’s about $8. If you saw smoke, though, the power supply is a possibility. They’re relatively cheap, too. Usually the fan will just seize up (try and spin them; you’ll have at least one for the power supply, and at least one more for the case, and one for the CPU). Usually you computer will stat once it cools off, but will become erratic and lock up if it gets too hot. If it won’t do anything at all, then the power supply is a good bet. Of course, it’s always possible that one of the little capacitors on the motherboard went bad. That would get you smoke. And would mean you’d need a new motherboard (I suppose it’s technically possible to fix, but motherboards these days are multi-layer, and not easy to solder. Not for me, anyway; I’m better at soldering pipes).
Sedition radio is just a collection of funny bits from MS and TMMS that are running off of one of my computers here. They play randomly.
Thank you for the guidance and offers, PJ and Melinda. But when I look at the ‘parent directory’ at snotgreensea, the most recent show listed there is August. Where are the latest shows at?
Well, what shows are you looking for? Marc guest hosted on Springer on 10/26 & 10/27 (I think) and 11/6. Links to those shows are in that forum that I linked to in #125. Marc has also been on Sam’s show on Fridays for the last few weeks. Usually 20 minutes or so, give or take. You can find links to the parts of those shows that Marc was on, in the Friday blogs. Look for my posts after noon on Fridays. What Marc sent out in his e-mail was the sedition radio link:
And then the link.
Thank you PJ. I’ll go to the forums link when this shoutcast clip is done (going on 20 minutes now, looks like it’s got maybe another 5-10 minutes to go. Thank you! I’ll go to the Friday blogs here.
I only heard a bit of both Randi and Sgt Shultz but it sounded like impeachment was totally off the table ( as in don’t even think about it) as was any thought of a quick withdrawal from Iraq.. It sounded like Ploser was going to spend the first six months or so trying to make friends with the thugbots.. I would think making friends with AQ would be easier…:bf: and after those revelations perhaps even more palatable to those who elected the demodorps. :tommygun:
Damn, I didn’t know that Sac’to news. I don’t think I can make it but I have a lot of friends up there and may see a few tonight.
Thanks.
But I would have known if I had remembered to look at
http://www.myspace.com/marcmaron
One day in the late 1980s, when I was a student in a small college in a likewise small city, a cop saw me putting up flyers, and told me to take it down.
I responded, “I want your name and badge number.”
He got out of the car and chased me down the street. “You want my name and badge number? I’ll give you my name and badge number,” he yelled out as he lumbered after me.
I hauled ass through an alleyway, ran in the back of a theater whose owner I knew, and hid. He did not see where I exited and gave up the pursuit. He was big. Did not hold grudges, either, or at least the officer never brought it up when he would occasionally see me on the streets.
Turns out he was not a bad cop. Once he stopped a friend for speeding, but let him go and told him to take care of the two outstanding warrants.
UCLA is no podunk state college. It is in fact a major university. Much more hip than its cross-town rival, USC–or at least that is the way it used to be. Big anti-war movement there. And so forth. I would bet that there will be hell to pay for whoever is responsible. Does anyone know of any responses by the students/faculty and community?
cops have their moments…I guess he regret chasing after somebody over a confrontation about fliers…
Someone needs to demand the videos immediately from UCLA
by John in DC – 11/16/2006 08:13:00 PM
I happen to know for a fact that every inch of the Powell Library at UCLA (other than the bathrooms) is covered by security cams. There isn’t anywhere in that library that a security camera isn’t recording everything that happens. That means that the entire incident that took place there last night, where the student was tasered repeatedly by the university cops, is on film and the university has it in their possession. Time for someone at UCLA, or in the media, to get on this immediately and demand a copy before the evidence goes poof. It’s possible the system is set to tape over every 24 hours, that means there may be only a few hours left to get the tapes.
From Americablog
the video was just shown on Keith a few minutes ago…there weren’t a lot of close ups but it was still obvious that they were really giving it to that kid…
all i am saying is who are the assholes that dont intervene in a situation like that i know i would not be physically capable of standing idly by!
Damn right Sean!
Morning Remembrance
A titan of the global pyramid scheme, economist Milton Friedman, collapsed and expired today. As a legacy he left behind the quite effective witholding tax, something that his wife chided him to no end.
No one should miss the person that Greg Palast called a “malevolent, dwarfish gnome”.
well, here we go again.
Al Franken leaving AAR by early December….maybe he got sick of himself…?
The picture on this blog is worth the visit…I may have to use it myself at some point when its clear if this thing is finally true or not. Im not sure that they will be able to sell with Franken’s contract hanging round…and Im not sure if they can reorganize with that salary to pay…..and maybe Marc can have his slot.
Makes tomorrow on Sam’s show seem rather interesting….
:banana:maron!!!!!
So if Franken is bailing, does this mean the end of AAR? Are there enough alternatives out there to replace it?
SEANMS :penguin: and ANDY aka AQUAMAN Thank You:!:
re 142 and 143 :fist: I kept saying to myself — why don’t the students (and teachers — like in the old days) circle the man or at least written down (or said on a phone recorder) (use to be name) BADGE NUMBERS, could be on phone to MEDIA at the moment so they could have heard screams — but so many other things could have been done.
My first thought was lay on the man — at least as many watching the incident just lay on the man and make sure we all were taped (or taped on phone).
:barf: I am calling that school tomorrow. :fist: HaaaYaaa
:growl::fist:AIV I still believe:!:
The Al Franken rumor could be just that. The story was put out there by a station manager in SF to cover his butt for dropping Al’s show for Hartmann. Al is going on his USO trip around 12/10.
Then again, maybe it’s true, esp. if he continues not getting paid.
I can’t imagine Marc going back to AAR. He would probably need to hook up with Jones or Nova M and get syndicated station to station. It seems to have worked fo Malloy. Anyone have a read on how much pressure Maronites could bring to bear compared to what Malloy had?
