There’s been a rather inordinate amount of discussion on Charlie Rangel saying he’ll be introducing legislation to reinstate the draft. On NPR, one faceless talking head said to the other (and I paraphrase), “isn’t this just grandstanding?” To which the other talking head replied, “yes, it is, because Rangel knows it’ll never pass. He’s just trying to make the point that if we want to continue with Bush’s foreign policy – especially increasing the troop levels in Iraq – the only way it can be done is with a draft.”
Um. Yeah. But that’s grandstanding?
Frankly (especially now that I’m way, way too old to be affected by it) I think that 2 years of compulsory service to the nation right after high school (and maybe for the balance of high school plus two year, for kids who are thinking about dropping out) would be a good idea. I think some kids would gravitate toward the military (and there’s nothing wrong with that, if they’re into it), and others could teach people to read, help build and maintain state and national parks, work with the elderly – all kinds of good things that might give them a good base for understanding something other than just going to college, or going out and getting a dead-end job or (worse) being poor, idle and unemployed. For their service, they should be paid a living wage, and awarded universal healthcare for life.
Some kids might make a career out of whatever they do, and others will perhaps have had an experience that they might otherwise have never had, that could shape the way they perceive the world – and their place in it – for the rest of their lives.
Oh, sure, you’d have to figure out how to make it fair, and the rich kids would probably be able to get the cushiest jobs and all that. But, all-in-all, I think it could do a lot of kids – and a lot of the rest of us – quite a bit of good.
I have to admit, if they’d instituted this the year before I’d graduated from high school, I’d have been pretty pissed. In retrospect, though, I think it would have done me a lot of good. Who knows, I coulda made something of my life.

NASA looks at plan to blot out Sun
THE idea seems like something out of a Superman comic: a machine or missile shoots tonnes of particles into the atmosphere that would block the Sun’s rays, cool down the overheated Earth, and reverse global warming.
But at the weekend scientists gathered in a closed session organised by NASA and Stanford University to discuss researching such a strategy. The idea is called geo-engineering: using technology to tinker with the Earth’s delicate climate balance.
Ken Caldeira, a climate scientist at the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology at Stanford University, said his modelling showed the idea worked. “We found that if you blocked 20 per cent of the sunlight over the Arctic Ocean it would be enough to restore sea ice,” he said.

Israeli forces launch raids in Gaza
GAZA (Reuters) – Israeli troops and tanks pushed deep into the Gaza Strip in two separate raids on Tuesday, clashing with Palestinian gunmen in Gaza City, local residents and witnesses said.
A column of about 30 tanks penetrated the heart of Gaza City and entered the Zeitoun district, a known militant stronghold, they said.
Residents said there were no reports of any casualties in what appeared to be the most intensive Israeli ground force raid into Gaza City since Israel launched an offensive in June after militants captured an Israeli soldier in a cross-border raid.
A smaller force raided Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip, an area more frequently targeted by Israeli forces in their attempts to stop militants from firing rockets into the Jewish state.
An Israeli military spokeswoman confirmed ground troops were operating in the Gaza Strip but gave no further details.
Israel has killed more than 320 Palestinians in Gaza, about half of them civilians, since it began its offensive.
Israel has increased raids in northern Gaza since a Palestinian rocket strike last Wednesday killed an Israeli woman and seriously wounded a man in the town of Sderot.
Defense Minister Amir Peretz said on Monday Israel would carry on fighting militants who fired rockets into Israel from Gaza but there were no plans to reoccupy the coastal territory the Jewish state quit last year. .

MEXICO CITY (AP) – Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has toured the country as if taking a victory lap. He’s named a Cabinet and called for donations to fund his government.
Now the fiery leftist plans to be sworn in as the country’s “legitimate president” on Monday as the country celebrates its 1910 revolution – thumbing his nose at the country’s highest electoral court, which declared conservative Felipe Calderon the presidential election winner by less than 1 percentage point.
Based in Mexico City, the parallel government will not try to collect taxes or make laws. It will have one objective: to hamper Calderon during his six-year term that begins Dec. 1. His supporters have pledged to block Calderon’s swearing-in ceremony before the Mexican Congress, although they have not announced how they plan to do so.
“We’re not going to give the right free rein,” Lopez Obrador said in a final stop in the southeastern state of Veracruz this weekend. “We’re going to confront it.”

Russian steelmaker to pay $2.3B for Oregon Steel
Deal creates world’s largest rail producer, and gives Evraz more access to U.S.
MOSCOW (Reuters) — Russian steelmaker Evraz will buy Oregon Steel Mills in a $2.3 billion deal, creating the world’s largest rail producer and giving Evraz access to lucrative U.S. markets.
Evraz, 41 percent owned by Russia’s richest man, Roman Abramovich, said on Monday its cash offer was 22.3 percent above Oregon’s (Charts) weighted average stock price for the past three months.
“The premium that we paid accounted for the growth in the profitability pattern of Oregon Steel,” Evraz Chief Financial Officer Pavel Tatyanin told Reuters, saying the U.S. company had posted record-high operating margins this year.

The Information Technology Association of America says lawmakers in the 109th Congress need to act on a number of issues the group says are critical to the U.S.’s global competitiveness.
By Paul McDougall
InformationWeek
Nov 20, 2006 04:00 PM
A lobby group backed by IBM, Microsoft, Intel, and other tech industry giants is urging Congress to pass a new research and development tax credit and increase the supply of H1-B immigrant visas before the current session adjourns.
The Information Technology Association of America says lawmakers in the 109th Congress also need to act on a number of other issues the group says are critical to the U.S.’s global competitiveness. “Our leaders need to foster an environment that encourages new ideas and new technologies,” said ITAA president Phil Bond, in a statement released Monday.
Patent laws and international trade are also on the group’s reform agenda.
In its statement, the ITAA notes that the federal research and development tax credit expired almost a year ago and has not been renewed. “Until it’s extended, companies cannot accurately plan to finance new or continued research and development initiatives within America’s borders,” according to the ITAA.

two more years of violence (and hopefully stalemate) until there’s the slightest hope of our being helpful diplomatically.
the global warming thing is interesting. be nice if we could stop it progressing now but even so we may need to do some serious interventions to reverse the damage.
I read an interesting piece a couple years back about seeding the ocean with iron to promote algae in dead zones to suck up lots of co2 relatively quickly. haven’t kept up on this possibility. it’s likely our species will have to try some risky things if we want to survive in any kind of civilized way.
otherwise, gaia’s gonna shake us off like a bad case of fleas. (have you ever read “gaia theory” fred?)
We do need a draft. Enough with these imperialistic land grabs. Let the Young Republicans go through basic training too.And we need Senators who demand that no troops be sent abroad except with a declaration of war. Habeas corpus isn’t the only part of the constitution that has gotten shredded recently.:sammy:
Hey wvmc. NBC renewed Studio 60 for a full season of 22 episodes, so at least we don’t have to worry about it going away soon. It needs a better timeslot, though. I’m thinking Wednesdays at 9 PM, but that only works for me since I stopped watching Lost. A lot of people watch Criminal Minds too, so I guess that’s why I’m not a network programmer.
No way will the Repigs possibly let a draft come back, but I like that Charlie Rangel is putting the issue out there and rubbing their faces in it. Fuck McCain for advocating increasing troop levels without explaining where the extra bodies are supposed to come from. He’s looking less presidential every time he opens his mouth.
Why are the Young Turds discussing BMWs? I thought Cenk wasn’t a Republican anymore. :smile

Hey Krista. I’m getting ready to start working, and you’re still up? Wow. You should come to work with me today. We have that cold weather you’re looking for… it’s about 48 degrees outside, and it’s only supposed to get up to about 58 at best. I guess winter is here.
krista:
I hate that. I take melatonin quite frequently cause my schedule’s so weird. what time do you usually get up?
So lets say
The SBR outsources and exports its Hi tech..
Outsources its manufacturing
Sells its industry and highways to foreign governments.
Sells major portions of its cities to foreign governments or investors
Tuition increases make it impossible for most kids to attend college ..or those who do graduate come out with huge college loans and no jobs ..
With no manufacturing there are no good paying jobs in areas requiring people with degrees or without.
except in the defense industries.
But ..
defense industries are funded by taxes which come mostly from personal income taxes
The SBR Titanic’s government already borrows 2 billion dollars a day to keep the pumps running because income taxes revenues do not keep up with expenses. That money mostly comes from foreign countries and investors.
55% of the federal budget is in payments that can not be reduced, 25% is in interest payments on the debt and is increasing and the rest is in defense spending.
Do we all see there is something basically not working here.
:eek::eek::eek::rant1::rant1::rant1:
I have the same thoughts as PJ about the draft. But I can’t really imagine me in the military and I would have fought tooth and nail against it when I was in high school. I don’t like the idea of someone else having that much control over me or my body. Plus i don’t particularly trust the military. Weren’t they the ones testing LSD on soldiers in the 50’s? I also ask “why?” too much.
See Kevin has nrmal November weather, why don’t we?? (see there’s that question:roll:)

Liberal talk radio is designed for people lounging around the pool and/or their pool table waiting for their dividend/social security checks.. Perhaps the ones waiting on their dividend checks are able to buy a BMW :crap::rant1:
i like dividends 😀
Are you sure about that Fred? I thought income taxes basically went to paying the interest on the national debt. That’s what that documentary “America, Freedom to fascism” by Aaron Russo says.
:fustrate:why does my mother have a mouse with a ball in it! watch this olberman! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhYCeO67fCs
Well the federal budget is around 2.6 trillion dollars
If there are 140 million workers and lets say they pay an average of 9000 a year in income taxes ( an income of around 33k a year) thats is like 1.2 trillion dollars. The borrowing is another 720 billion so there is about 500 billion unaccounted for. ( maybe social security taxes being included in the federal income stream and taxes from that upper 10%) :rant1:
I’m trying to picture some wealthy “liberal” lounging around the pool, listening to Mike Malloy, or Sam Seder, or even Randi Rhodes. Don’t quite see it. Franken, maybe. I also keep checking my mailbox for dividend checks, but alas, they never seem to come.
ok here it is…… http://www.theage.com.au/news/world/hezbollah-calls-for-protests/2006/11/20/1163871341288.html
Someone listening to Sedar, Franken , Rhodes or Shultz are probably not working at least in the classical sense yet those shows have the highest audience counts.
also
People living(surviving) off their second mortgage or unemployment benefits are probably not going to buy what their advertisers are selling.

So, why would you not be “working” if you listen to any of those shows?
And, do you really think “the beautiful people” are sitting around listening to 20 minutes an hour of some of the crappiest ads on the radio? I can’t see that, either.
Hell, according to Sheldon Drobny, he can’t even get the people sitting around the pool waiting for their dividend checks to invest in liberal talk radio.
I can work and listen at the same time!
The original thought was what market is liberal talk designed for ?? Looking at their advertisers it is not your typical middle or lower middle class working person..
also
People working on a shop floor or in retail are probably not allowed to have a radio or Ipod plugged in their ear . People working in an office generally can not hear AM radio under fluorescent lights.( doesn’t work here under our fluorescent lights or in my garage at least) and many places don’t let their people stream over the internal building network .. ( I bribe my IS person)
Jay Marvin is a collector of sports cars ..generally when he talks about that on the air he gets no calls for the next forty five minutes like everyone quit listening.
Well, I’ve worked in plenty of offices where AM radio comes in, and I’ve worked on the floor in factories where AM radio comes in, and gets blasted loudly (if not necessarily clearly) all day long. You think the elite are the ones listening to Rush Limbaugh, too?
There are also plenty of people who work odd hours, off shifts, or listen to AM radio on their commutes. Remember the West Coast bakers who were big fans of Morning Sedition?
As for advertisers, do you think Ovaltine, Wendy Friesen, and Bruce Berman are selling their crap to Barbra Streisand?
Frankly, I think the beautiful people are more likely to be listening to NPR than AAR.
Well I guess I am up for the duration. I took an hour nap and … .. 4 hrs later…., evidently sleeping thru wakeup calls, I awoke late on EVERYTHING. 😮 These days 4 hrs sleep is almost average (at least for some WEIRDOS like me) so I am AWAKE:eek:

Infuse tea:joe: NOW and wonder how the HELL does Fred do this everyday.:omg::eek: …(…getting up a 3am his time almost daily)
End of “diatribe” :spank:
I agree that a lot of people listen to talk radio during drive time.
In listening to the people who call in to these shows in the day time they are quite often older people. A lot of the Reich’s audience seem to be women and crusty old men ( Amway dealers, realtors and rusting VFW members perhaps) occasionally they also get a call from some CEO or stock broker type
KKZN’s advertisers are mostly auto dealers and debt reduction/refinance companies.,with some ovaltine, Walmart and Sams club thrown in,( Clear channel has no pride)
I’m sure a lot of the callers are older, retired people. Who else can pick up the phone and sit on hold waiting to call in? I just know – or at least knew, since I’m one of those liberal elitists waiting for my dividend check to come in – a lot of blue collar working people who have rightwing radio on in the background all the time at work (mainly ‘cuz we don’t have an alternative here, and the talk stations have the best signals), who hear nothing but Rush and the Rush clones all day long. “You tell ’em Rush! Damn straight.” And we’re not even a particularly red area (Kerry, Gore, and Clinton – both of ’em – all won here fairly easily, the mayor of Syracuse is a Democrat, the Syracuse Common Council has only one Republican, and our Bush rubberstamp is considered a “moderate,” who only won by about 2,000 votes – about 1% – in the last election).
If we had an alternative to the wingnut blather, we’d be a socialist enclave.
Yeah, see? You think the folks waiting for their dividend checks while they sip banana daqaris by the pool are calling up “the mortgage guy” or a looking to refinance their debt from some clown on the radio? Hell, they have accountants and lawyers. I doubt they’re shopping at Sam’s Club, either.
Michael Richards apology for going off on some black folks.
One thing I’ve noticed when I get angry at someone is that the first thing I feel like attacking is the most obvious physical aspect of them. If I got angry at an over weight person I would attack that. If I got angry at someone with a hair lip, I would call them a name referring to that. Or if they’re old, the insult would refer to that.
Yeah, when you get enraged, sometimes shit just comes out. Of course, it can’t come out unless it’s in there somewhere to begin with. The great thing about insulting fat people is that they’re universally considered to be fair game. It’s your fault if you’re fat, and it makes you an inferior human being (it also give the non-fat people something to feel superior and smug about, which is always nice). I mean, somebody who smokes and has emphysema has created their own health problem, too, but they’re a lot tougher to publicly criticize and humiliate
i couldn’t watch the richard’s diatribe. Who would have imagined such heinous feelings would spew out of him? Of course we’re all capable of thinking or saying unkind words, but on a stage and in public, where was his little background voice of at least SOME semblance of propriety and grace? :priest:
walked the dorks 4 miles and it is cold out. That should wear ’em out. :sammy:
Yeah, you would think that a comic would’ve acquired a much thicker skin, and would know better (I didn’t actually watch it either, though – I don’t really like to see people being mean to other people). But, well, who knows what else was going on with him? My problem with being a bleeding heart liberal is that I can’t help but feel for people, no matter how obscene their actions may have been (or even if they aren’t particularly deserving of sympathy). Can’t help it. In the end, I’m a wimp. Don’t even get me started on Old Yeller, or The Yearling. Hell, I ran Bambi three times a night for months, and I still felt bad every night when Bambi’s mother died.
ok, hello all:
went to sleepy sleep for awhile and woke up with an idee…
what gov’t agency or advisory council or… does recalls on products for safety reasons?
they could do a recall on all the suspect voting machines. forcing the offending companies to reimburse the communities that bought them so they could buy equipment less likely to choke the voters.
what do you think?
WOW … When someone meets someone, it is, I believe, ones responsibility to discipline ones mind and not give into selfish, vain, petty criticism.
I have also believed that everyone has certain weaknesses. One may be great in oneway but someone could be better in otherways. No matter, they are in your life because they are meant to cross your path then TO TEACH EACH OTHER, whether they are fat, homeless, elderly, or whatever.
I believed this when I was 5-16 (actually, it appears to be my whole life) and others would say exactly what you are saying now. The only reason this weird woman was accepted by the 😎 crowd is that I would date the most desired men, with glee, as I defended the ones being “tagged”, verbally, and sometimes in other ways. :fist: HaaaYaaa. :rofl2:

regarding the richards thing…..I dont like standup much as some of you know…and I view what Marc does as more social commentary and train of thought than standard standup comedy.
Mel gibson had that stuff in him and it came out when he was drunk…Maybe richards was trying to be tougher than he was or it just didnt come out like it sounded in his head…but some words just shouldnt be spoken by white people. And as liberals we need to be less bleeding heart about everyone’s feelings and start to expect a certain level of decency….I know thats a slippery slope, but its only that way because we’ve allowed regular ethics and morality to be hijacked and education about the same to be dumbed down….Actually it is hijacked especially because the sort of critical that used to be taught and expected in schools is sort of gone unless you seek it out….
There should maybe be some basic rules, like we dont ridicule people for how they look and what color they are…and we dont bring up crimes against humanity in the vein of silencing a heckler or stopping a cop from giviing a ticket. Its just not Ok and one shouldnt be able to just check into rehab for 30 days to get over it.
This stuff is either deep in your brain or not…or you heard it growing up or something….its just too ugly.
Mybe its in everyone’s brain in some layer of evolution…who knows?
My Mom was talking this AM about the muslims praying on the plane and was saying how the hasidic jews got up on her most recent plane and went ot the back in a group to pray. I say there should be NO praying outloud allowed on planes and on mass transit. Religion is fine but dont impose it on anyone else anymore than you would smoke a cigarette otr whatever…and if youre Muslim and you do that in this atmosphere, youre just asking for it.
If youve got to pray at a certain time then youve got to do it silently or not fly during that time/ stopover during that time.

Poor Siggy went to the vet yesterday (and my wife made me go, which is tough on me, ‘cuz I really don’t like to see the poor guy upset). We went to a new (different) vet, though, who was very nice. Siggy wasn’t too crazy about that thermometer, though (who could blame him?). He got kinda growly when he had his mouth prodded, but he was a good boy. Didn’t even notice the rabies shot.
Eight years old, and still in good shape. Strong heart, clear lungs. 77.5 pounds, so he’s kept his figure (wish I could say the same).
Melina, that’s just retahded. (Insert appropriate tongue in cheek emo here). Maybe Kramer was just trying to reclaim the N word but is not as sharp as Maron. I thought it was nice that Dave and Jerry gave up their time to try to let him apologize. As far as I could see, there was no promotion of the appearance.

Yeah, unfortunately, that’s how the FDA works. Hi Folks, just came out of the shadows to comment on the Michael Richards incident. I have known Michael on a very casual level, and my impression of him is that he is very shy deep down. A few of my friends were in the audience that night, and michael was being savagely heckled by the two men.He was being racially goaded into a response. “This Cracka aint funny”, “This Cracka is washed up”, “Get this Cracka off the stage”. I do not condone racist speech, but I think the incident was somewhat distorted from the reality of the moment. I believe Michael began to turn the incident around using the “nigga” word and then he lost it as he had “nowhere to go” with it. Comics have feelings too, he is trying to make a comeback after several disapointments, and I suspect is very insecure about his career. There are very few “whites” that are even connected by decent that had anything to do with slavery, yet as a group are blamed for the “chains of slavery”. Racism is a two way street now, and trying to make it a one way street will almost certainly make a very strong backlash. Political Correctness is one thing, but Justice and Truth are even better.

MoonLightMan, Thank You. Well put. I did not know how to summarize the little knowledge of the subject I knew.
Yeah, I agree MLM, but also…its just that anyone who is in the spotlight like that having been on such a big show has to realize that this is gonna be jumped on. I dont think that this is news….who cares what a comic says really?….but its a slow news day.
I feel bad for him but you can never use that word ever…it never works coming out of a white mouth….
He didnt look so in control to me…as if it sorta went bad right away. I wonder what the beginning was like. I always wonder about those videos where they dont really show the beginning part.
where is the video with the hecklers starting things?
and rox- I guess everything is a slippery slope but my point is that the worry of that, rather than common sense can tangle us up to the point where we are paralyzed.
Its not so wrong to expect certain behavior from people…its part of being in society anbd a line is obviously drawn somewhere. We have just stopped laughing at the point where we drift into nonsense on either side in the whole PC- world and freedom of speech.
This is not the time of lenny bruce…and I believe and hope that Marc has given up the fat material….I asked him to anyway. Cheap shots are just too easy and if youre smart there is so much more to use out there….
its youtube…..you cant do anything without youtube following you around.
I dont know if richards realizes or can come to terms with how big the show was…I heard that they all got really rich, but maybe thats not true for the secondary characters….
I think that syndication is kind to all…
Making a comeback as a krameresque stand up isnt really making a comeback….
Either he played himself and hes a one trick pony or he needs to go and get cast in an indy small budget feature and deconstruct….
Trying to do standup like that is just asking for it.

A Comics life is a very difficult one. Somehow I do not think that if a white guy was yelling to an “Eddie Murphy” Get off the stage nigga, you are washed up nigga…….it would have been tolerated. Racism is Racism period. There can not be a one way street, because a one way street is at the heart of racism. It leads nowhere but continued Racism.
I had heard that Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David retained all the residuals and the “characters” were given a flat fee. I do not know if it is true. I am sure the flat fee is more than most will ever make in a lifetime.

I don’t know if ‘cracka’ is enough provocation to go where he did, even if he was trying to be edgy. Maybe I am coming from the white guilt place but he went to a place I don’t think he has the chops for if he is trying to be a social commentator. I think other factors may be involved. Check him out on Letterman last night.
If anyone cares to take a moment, what about this guy?

The Kramer Krack-up (look how clever I am!) is really disturbing but I’m actually pleased to NOT hear “I’m an alcoholic… the drink made me do it.”
When I saw the Robert Altman thing… I was startled. Made a little YIP in my class. That’s really sad.:knit2:
I am not trying to be an apologist for Michael Richards, I do think he went over the line and “lost it”. I just do not think he is a KKK racist as he is being portrayed, I think his Jewish heritage knows better than that. My only point is that we are no longer in the 1950’s and to some, being blamed for slavery and being inherently “racist” is just as offensive to some, as saying all blacks are criminals. It just perpetuates the problem rather than solving the problem.
MLM, I have no problem with him. I don’t think he meant it. I don’t think he is a racist. Someone call me a cracker and I would have to say guilty as charged because I am white from the fringe South and try to laugh about it.
On the other hand, I thought Altman was very offensive to ‘crackas’ and ‘po’ white trash’ when he made “Nashville”. I have to see it again but I thought he was totally looking down his nose in that one. He did a lot of other great work but that one I thought was an elitist harmful sneer.
what was kramer on before seinfeld? some repatory comedy show I think. Fridays , or something like that maybe. didn’t he play the kid with the toy armies in the back yard?
was that him?
Anyone see Franken last night on Lou Dobbs?
Apparently he was asked about AAR and said something like his future there would depend on how the sale went.

6 nations plus EU sign accord for nuclear fusion project
Officials from six nations and the European Union signed a long-awaited, $12.8-billion pact in Paris on Tuesday to build a nuclear fusion reactor aimed at developing a cheaper, cleaner and safer energy source.
French President Jacques Chirac hosted officials from the EU, the United States, India, China, Japan, South Korea and Russia in launching the project.
“This mobilization is indispensable,” Chirac said at the signing in Paris.

i’m afraid if you’re white, the only way you can use the n-word is if you’re repeating a dave chapelle bit.
on the other hand, this doesn’t seem like too much to expect…
I got called out for making fun of the macaca thing on election day at a dem call bank. Sometimes it does go too far, that PC thing. The ridicule was part of Allen’s downfall.
Doesn’t nuclear fusion involve aborted fetuses (feti?)?

Priviledge…
it’s a cloak that seems non-existent to those who wear it. one must use one’s imagination and critical facilities to see it.
there’s lots more than just white priviledge. it’s just how people’s expectations and predjudices affect their interactions.
white priviledge is not being watched so attentively in the mall. it’s not necessarily a set of positives, but certainly entails a much smaller set of negatives preceding your every step.
it’s the need to be prepared to overcome certain expectations and probably also a sense of relief when such an effort isn’t needed.
it seems to me that being black must be very tiring sometimes.
Are you Black Roxie?
nope, a northern europeon mongrel. are you?
No, I was just wondering if “white privilege” was inputing some type of tiredness on the Black Americans.

OK, here’s a heartwarming story to put you all in the Thanksgiving mood. Perhaps even those of you who have to cook and clean to make the holiday happen:
A three-week search for the companion dog of an Oregon man battling depression has ended happily in Wyoming, more than 700 miles from where the dog went missing in Nebraska.
Melody, a 12-year-old border collie mix, was found huddled under a pickup in Sheridan, Wyo. She had been inside a car when it was stolen in York, Neb.

I like the way things turn here.
I was thinking if I were in the position that I might be included in compulsory service, I might be pretty upset. But in the era when there was a draft, there were plenty of ‘get out of jail free cards’ and I would have drawn one and done it gladly not to go to war or into the military. If there had been a ‘go to Appalachia and help some folks and resume your life in a couple of years’ option and everybody had to do it, I would have been there in a heartbeat.
It would be a great democratizer if it happened and I don’t mean that in a capital ‘D’ political sense. It would hopefully break down some of the class separation for at least a moment if all levels of wealth and all races were thrown into the same pool for a few years in a formative stage of life.

I didn’t understand the question. could you rephrase?
Uhoh, this will get you out of the Thanksgiving mood:
BURIED WITHIN a recent government brief in the case of Guantanamo Bay inmate Majid Khan is one of the more disturbing arguments the Bush administration has advanced in the legal struggles surrounding the war on terrorism. Mr. Khan was one of the al-Qaeda suspects who was detained in a secret prison of the CIA and subjected to “alternative” interrogation tactics — the administration’s chilling phrase for methods most people regard as torture. Now the government is arguing that by subjecting detainees to such treatment, the CIA gives them “top secret” classified information — and the government can then take extraordinary measures to keep them quiet about it. If this argument carries the day, it will make virtually impossible any accountability for the administration’s treatment of top al-Qaeda detainees. And it will also ensure that key parts of any military trials get litigated in secrecy.

Been there and did that except instead of waiting tables I was the porter/busboy/dishwasher. Now I think those jobs go to people who really need them rather than kids.
I always wonder who could come up with an idea such as torture is top secret, therefore you can never tell anyone you were tortured. These guys really come from another planet.
Perhaps this is another clue to their character. Apparently just thinking about money makes one stingy:
In a series of experiments, psychologists found that subconscious reminders of money prompted people to become more independent in their work, less likely to seek help from others or to provide it. They became reluctant to volunteer their time and stingy when asked to donate to a worthy cause.

My first job (not counting paper boy) was busing tables and washing dishes. Oh, man, did that suck. The skin on my hands was split into shreds from spritzing the stainless steel surfaces down with ammonia. It taught me that I wanted nothing to do with a career in food service.
After babysitting, my first jobs were waitressing in Greenwich Village. They were great jobs because the tips were really good and although I worked really hard, at the end of the night I left the job in the Village. Now, the job comes home with me and THAT sucks.
But, PJ, it also made you get it. I bet you are a good customer when you go into a service situation.
And I tip. If they are bad I advise them, but always to say that I am leaving a tip since I know what it is like. It is a “dear” mandatory job, which got me thru school and life, at different times.

I’ll tell ya what, it made me appreciate the crap that waitresses have to take from idiotic, boorish, men. I saw them give some of the less tough ones such a hard time that they broke down and cried. I sure as hell resolved never to be like that.
I also busted my ass working in a foundry for a couple of years when I dropped out of college. Not only hot, physical, dirty, lung-choking work, but I was treated like I was a total moron. Made me really appreciate what some people have to do day in and day out for 30 or 40 years to take care of their families. It led me to be a union rabble rouser with the Steelworkers. And, against my better judgment, later on with CSEA.
Working as a grease monkey at a hospital taught me a lot about how some “professional” treat their “inferiors,” too. It’s one reason I don’t exactly hold doctors in any kind of esteem (that, and they way they treated my mother, and the way modern medicine killed my father, but I won’t get into all that).
Yeah, I’m a good tipper. Most people that have worked for a living are. They say doctors and lawyers are the worst (except lawyers that are ex-Hobart repair people, of course).

Where is the UPS man? Been tracking my new headphones. Says their our for delivery. :paranoid: Hope he didn’t leave them at someone else’s door!
First Daughter Barbara Bush had her purse and cell phone stolen as she had dinner in a restaurant in Buenos Aires, Argentina, even though she was being guarded by a detail of Secret Service agents, according to law enforcement reports made available to ABC News.
It was not the only mishap on the two-week trip to Argentina by Barbara (right) and her twin sister Jenna (left).
A Secret Service agent on the advance detail got into an “altercation” with someone after a night out and was badly beaten, according to the law enforcement reports. The Secret Service said today the incident was an attempted mugging that occurred while the agent was on his own time. The agent is doing fine.

I thought you would perhaps have grits with your turkey..Southerners seem to have grits with everything ..
I wonder if the UPS truck rear ended someone out on Hwy 280? Tracking still saying package “out for delivery”. I hear another low rumble. Prolly not him though.
Hello everyone :joe:
I hate grits! I guess I’m not so southern after all. Least not where grits are concerned. I do like stacks of pancakes though.
hey andy. What’s up?

Hey Nick, I tried but it doesn’t work in Opera and I keep getting a page error when I try to send it using IE6.XX
Well it was nice to see moonlightman around here earlier.
I still have my theory about that guy.
😆
What theory is that Blue?
You have a popup blocker? I was using one when I first tried and the “record page” would not open. I ran around in circles for quite some time till I figured what I was doing wrong? Those windows machines! Need to ask Santa for a Macbook Pro Andy! It just works!
MM:tongue:
Blue, it was kinda interesing what he was talking about huh? Did he not say he knew comedians? Ha! Still the MM theory?
No, I can record and playback, but when I hit send I get a page error.
You may be southern dear, but they too have it right — without a can. Natural and deliriously delicious…
Nahh, Marc?!!
Well that is strange. Did you try to empty your cache?
Although he did start out with “Hi Folks”. Hhmmm. Fascinating Captain.
I guess UPS has lost my headphones. I need them badly.
There was something about baking a hummingbird cake months ago that had me going…
oh well back to work here:doh:
I’ll give that a try. I don’t know.
If MLM is MM we need to trick him into leaving a voice mail message.
Null Point Exception. Maybe if I upgrade JAVA.
Shout out to Marc Maron: This blog exists because of you. Please leave a voice mail message. We love you man!
Bet that’s it Andy.
Happy Turkey Day Marc!

Maybe you should download Firefox and try from there.
Well Blue I think you’re right. Why doesn’t he just use his name?
Although how many of the guys here use their actual names?
Hmmm.
Rachael Maddow on CNN right now!
I’ll give it a shot.
It is kind of cool the Maron checks out the blog.
So I thought Rachael’s show was on AAR right now. How does she do that?
MAN!! I gotta get satellite!!
Her show ends at 8:00 EST. Maybe CNN’s studio is close-by
She’s prolly looking for a permanent position at CNN. I think she does better in her position at CNN. Rachael is a nice looking woman if I do say so myself. If AAR goes under without a buyer she will find a good place to land I am sure. I wonder what would be the result if no buyer can be found! :paranoid:
I like my Charter Cable and Internet at least when its working. I watch to much CNN and listen to it during my travels via XM Radio.
Who is that that left a message?????? Coolness
Is that you Andy??? Great. Everyone listen to the new message.
I must confess to a certain crush on Rachel. 😳
No, I still can’t get it working.
wonder who that was? Nice deep voice. BTW Andy I’m afraid to tell ya. err . . . maybe I’ll let someone else break the news to ya.
UPS site still shows “out for delivery”. What in the hell.
Yeah Yeah I know, I’m always attracted to women I couldn’t possibly have.
I think I may hear UPS, YES, he’s right across the street!
Outstanding!!
Why must they package these things like this? You have to be a safe cracker to get into the package.
If it’s that plastic crap, I nearly cut my thumb off trying to open one of those.
Now if Andy or Marc Maron or someone else would leave a voice mail message all would be right with the world. At least I’m not the only one up there now. That guy (whoever he may be) is really creative. Nice message whoever you are!
:rofl2:
I knew I couldn’t fool you guys.
Yes, I sort of figured it was you Andy! You sound good man. Very creative message. More? We wanna hear more.
Andy you need to be doing a show man. At least podcast.
You’ve actually inspired me Nick after listening to you’re show. I got the shoutcast plugin last week and was tinkering around with it. It’s working, but my upstream bandwidth is around 350K, which is pitiful. I’ve got to mess with the setting so more than two people can listen, then I’ve got to come up with a show. But, I am working on it.
If you can’t broadcast Andy you can at least do a podcast. I’d love to hear your show. Do it please.
PJ, can help you with Shoutcast Andy.
you know what gives me pause?….Im unloading $300 worth of groceries (though 1/3 are for Hi, and 1/3 for thanksgiving pies etc….the stuff I make) and I flip on Keith, and am so sad about Altman….and then…the commercial…Heather Mills McCartney has chosen to speak finally…who does she choose?…
That speaks volumes to me. Someone is not advising her very well.
Andy, that is so great!! We will have alot of shows around here before long!
Live shows are terribly difficult for me because I’m such an introvert. I am much more comfortable doing a podcast.
I donno how many listeners my bandwidth will support. I’ve only managed to get 7 to 9 listeners at one time. I so envy John Ong. He has so many supportive friends who listen to him. I really could benefit by prep work. But I’m lazy. You are very creative. And you have a voice meant for radio.
I’m going to do it but I can’t say when it’ll be ready. Oh and you’ll have to tell me how to podcast.
Radio is so competitive. But you have the talent. And a creative mind. If you put yourself out there you will be heard. And who knows where that may lead.
I’ll help you in anyway I can Andy. I’ll be putting together a how to podcast page on my site before long.
Doing characters on Maron’s next show?
andy aka Aquaman, 😳 I got as far as gettng a Winamp and putting on computer…but didn’t know if I (my computer) could. PJ said I could (but might slow me down). Now onto step 3 and live with “support”.:omg::eek:

I can really only tell you how I do it. But the basic steps are the same for Windows and Macs. I’ll work on a page after the holidays.
hey…look at young turks…. They arent such great shakes really, they just kept plugging away at their little thing. I do think that it helps tohave more people…(and you can see why Marc wants writers….imagine if you had to come up with not only commentary on the the news but the funny as well….!)
Do you think that Mills couldnt get any other show, such as Oprah? Larry King?…maybe no one will talk to her…I think she knew Oprah from when she lost her leg and made her first charity.
I like paul Hackett…He just got the last word on the panel by calling what Obama said a soundbite…ha!
hey Nick, you have a great voice too….that John Edwards accent is so great!
Hey everyone.
Me and a co-worker did a Cinderella mural today for a little girl who’s dying of a brain tumor.Wow, pretty sad. How can a twelve year old get a brain tumor?? Nice family too. They were Hispanic and I was amazed at how un-somber their home was. I think that Mexicans deal with death much better than we do. Sorry to be a buzz kill but I had to get that out.
Hey you never know Andy. I think Marc Maron visits this blog. Keep posting audio clips. It is a way to be heard. Who knows.
My voice does not seem consistent in its tone. I donno why. I liked the way I sounded on today’s clip of me interviewing Peter on today’s podcast. The mics definitely make a difference. But Andy has a voice definitely made for radio. I loved your voice from the start Andy. Very powerful. Your voice demands attention.
Wow, thanks everybody. I’ve got to get some work done now, a guy at the car rental place needs a hard drive upgrade, actually I’m not sure what he wants, but I’ve got to get some disks ready for tomorrow. I’ll check in alittle later.
D6^3, do you need help now?
wasnt PG or QG going to be an intern at MS before it ended ? Or was it seanie?…Ill bet any of us could apply to be an intern on Marc’s next show (not me though!…Ive been in enough show biz for a lifetime) and you would likely end up being used as a character eventually. Cant say if thats good or bad.
I think confidence helps in vocal tone and timbre. Being an introvert does not lend one to a strong voice. I guess I need to work on building confidence; something I have always lacked.
You know Cnick, i don’t think Marc does visit this blog. PJ says someone from Air America visits sometimes but i really don’t think either him or Jim visit here. Maybe once in a blue moon, maybe.
Well, you sound good to me Nick…and better and better as time goes on as far as feeling comfortable doing what youre doing.
Krista- I also doubt Marc gets on here much…and if he did he would probably think we’re prettycrazy because if youre not a lurker or poster it would look a little strange if you just popped in.
I think he writes alot….it seems like he doesnt even really do the myspace thing much….he is not all that techy as far as I can tell.
I also get the AAR visitor on my blog from time totime…but usually if I mention one of them or the station…and I think the crawler searchers out there direct them…I also get some from huffpo’s server and politician’s servers…such as Chris Shays who seems to have a staff member monitoring the internet all the time.
CNick, I think you have an enchanting voice and looking forward to oneday hearing Andy’s. ( My name was erased… snif)

Hey Andy! You remind me of my previous boyfriend and good friend who I’m trying to talk into doing a show! That was great!(Your recording) We get lots of great ideas for radio shows. We had an idea for a show called Hardluck Radio. We’re still working out the details.
In today’s podcast I talk to a new friend named Peter and I offer up a tribute to the life of President John F. Kennedy.
Hey Krista,
I seem to have that effect on women. Always reminding them of former boyfriends. :fustrate:
Druid play the BT Pusbucket, That’s my voice, sort of.
OK I’ve got to get to work.
Andy’s voice is in the voice mail Druid.
I think Marc does think we’re kinda nutty. He always seems a little frightened when when we would call the show or go to one of his stand-up gigs.
andy aka Aquaman re 238, No, but thank-you. That is charming.
Well, Andy, I’m friends with all my ex boyfriends so that is not a bad thing with me.
so…she did an interview with Extra! because she didnt think that she would get a fair shake from anyone else…? And so Scarborough is actually do an interview with the interviewer. Talk about false advertising….
Who the hell is Dana Devin? When is Extra on?…i think its on around when Matthews is.
well, I dont think he thinks we’re nutty anymore when we go to his shows…I dont think he likes the phone call part of radio, and I dont know how great it is to get alot of calls from fans as opposed to people who really just want to talk about different points….But at the shows, hes really happy if any of us shows up…hes come around. We’re not all that nutty…are we? I think that we are a pretty diverse and interesting group…levelheaded and not like, stalkers or anything. I hope not anyway….
Damn! Ladies, if you can make skype calls you can leave a message on the blog voice mail. Come on Krista and Melina. Druid! Find that headset please.
Hmm, I wonder if I have anything to say, Cnick. Lemme think a minute.
my computer is all screwed up Nick…but I will go get it sooner or later I just finally sat down after hauling a ton of groceries and putting them away. Tomorrow Ill be around all day cooking.
Why is David Blane doing this? The water thing was disgusting enough but this is making me nauseus….I have a very bad inner ear injury anyway….
The last time I called the show was when He had Mark Crispin Miller on and I wanted to ask a question about the upcoming election and I felt like Marc was expecting me to take up all the time telling him how much we miss him. I could be paranoid too. :paranoid:
cnickthomas, :rofl2: (Charming.) :rofl2: I might have to order on the computer 😮 and look up what PJ said was a good, medium price mic (and headset, I think).

Its that digital …um..plantronics…? I think its on TWIT….let me look.
I now have two sets because I apparently ordered 2 without remembering….

Maybe my new router will com tomorrow…maybe it will work…
well…I hope AAR doesnt bite the dust. Even though its had a rough go of it its sometihg that Ive come to depend on…at least sam and ring of fire….
I think that Drobny is wrong about the rich folks not wanting to invest. Its just that the management was so bad in the first place that it didnt look to me to be a reasonable investment.
But with a Rupert Murdoch in the world ready to flush $$ down the toilet for whatever rag and message he cares about, I suppose that we need an angel with alot of disposable wealth…how bout Ned Lamont?
It’s a good thing that NovaM became a network and has started to diversify where their talent is comeing from, and who knows, if AAR goes under maybe Randi and Sam would be moving to Phoenix! :yippee: 🙂
