The final Morning Sedition aired on this date, one year ago. A very sad day, indeed. But, we get an extra holiday present, with a week’s worth of Marc and many of the surviving cast of characters on the Sam Seder show. Should be fun; I know I’m looking forward to it.
Sorry I missed the first day of Chanukah yesterday (tell you the truth, I have to look online just to figure out what day of the week it is; I’m still having a hard time believing that Thanksgiving is over already), but let me say Chappy Chanukah to all. :menorah: Also, here’s to a safe trip, and an enjoyable vacation for Will and Melina in Cancun. Of course, we expect pictures when you get back (bikinis would be nice).
Otherwise, just a little bit left for me to do, and then I intend to take a week-long nap. Maybe two weeks. Wake me when it’s New Years.
Wha’ hoppened?
Because it was there. Good night.

ASTANA, Kazakhstan — Valentina Sivryukova knew her public service messages were hitting the mark when she heard how one Kazakh schoolboy called another stupid. “What are you,” he sneered, “iodine-deficient or something?”
snip
Worldwide, about two billion people — a third of the globe — get too little iodine, including hundreds of millions in India and China. Studies show that iodine deficiency is the leading preventable cause of mental retardation. Even moderate deficiency, especially in pregnant women and infants, lowers intelligence by 10 to 15 I.Q. points, shaving incalculable potential off a nation’s development.
The most visible and severe effects — disabling goiters, cretinism and dwarfism — affect a tiny minority, usually in mountain villages. But 16 percent of the world’s people have at least mild goiter, a swollen thyroid gland in the neck.

I don’t think Guiliani is gonna get very far. Plus McCain has been kissing Bushes butt since the 2004 election. Rove will probably help him out but it won’t be publicized.
Iodine
Dietary intake
The United States Food and Drug Administration recommends (21 CFR 101.9 (c)(8)(iv)) 150 micrograms of iodine per day for both men and women. This is necessary for proper production of thyroid hormone. Natural sources of iodine include seaweed, such as kelp and seafood. [1] Salt for human consumption is often enriched with iodine and is referred to as iodized salt.
[edit] Iodine deficiency
In areas where there is little iodine in the diet—typically remote inland areas and semi-arid equatorial climates where no marine foods are eaten—iodine deficiency gives rise to goiter, so called endemic goiter. The mechanism is that low amounts of thyroid hormone in the blood due to lack of iodine to make them, give rise to high levels of the pituitary hormone TSH, which in turn stimulates abnormal growth of the thyroid gland. In some such areas, this is now combatted by the addition of small amounts of iodine to table salt in form of sodium iodide, potassium iodide, potassium iodate—this product is known as iodized salt. Iodine compounds have also been added to other foodstuffs, such as flour, in areas of deficiency.
Iodine deficiency is the leading cause of preventable mental retardation, an effect which happens primarily when babies and small children are made hypothyroid by lack of the element (this condition in adults results in mental slowing, but by itself, almost never causes severe or irreversible mental problems). Iodine deficiency remains a serious public health problem in developing countries.

Incoming Democratic committee chairmen say they will hold a series of hearings and investigations early next year to build the case for their call for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and for possible action against defense contractors found to have wasted billions in federal funds.
The emerging plans to grill administration officials on the conduct of the war are part of a pledge for more aggressive congressional oversight on issues such as prewar intelligence, prisoner treatment at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay, and the government’s use of warrantless wiretaps.
Among the most eager incoming chairmen is Sen. Carl M. Levin … said he also plans inquiries into “documentation of waste and fraud and abuse in the contracting areas” of the military. Aggressive oversight “is not just a budget issue,” he said, but at some point “becomes a significant moral issue.” In the House, Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Pa.), another leading advocate of a phased withdrawal, has vowed to use his Appropriations subcommittee chairmanship to investigate the Iraq war, holding “two hearings a day for the first three or four months . . . to find out exactly what happened and who’s been responsible for these mistakes.”

Charter schools are really just a way to break the union. Charter schools do no better than regular public schools and often do worse.
In NYC, Mayor Bloomberg has won control of the schools. He has established a leadership academy to train principals. They are trying to train people who have NO teaching experience to run schools. They also like to rely on the opinions of people who have NEVER taught children. Thus we get great ideas likes improving education by taking away teachers’ desks.
I had a friend who said that everyone thinks he/she knows how to teach because everyone has been a student.
But just as listening to a radio station is different from running the station, teaching a class is different from being a student.

Most CEO’s seem to know very little about the industry their company is involved in. They are bean counters and/or stock manipulators . Thirty years ago the PenCentral corporation management used their land holdings to make their railroad look profitable while not investing in the railroad forcing the railroad physical pant to to go down the toilet . As soon as the real estate business went south the railroad went bankrupt ..That had to be one of the largest government bailouts and cases of corporate welfare in history. When Conrail took over they used railroaders to run the railroad and it became the largest IPO in American history in the late 1990s

Sen. Bill Nelson is getting shit on quite a bit for his diplomatic excursion to Syria. For once, I have to back him on this. Bush is obviously not willing to talk to the Syrians, so it’s good that someone is picking up the slack. Better to start cleaning up the mess now rather than letting it deteriorate further.
After his dismal performance backing the bankruptcy bill and the Military Commissions Act, it’s nice for a change to see Nelson do something positive. I should probably e-mail him and let him know that, in hopes that he might do it more often.

Russia to re-equip its new mobile ICBMs with multiple warheads
MOSCOW, December 15 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces are set to start re-equipping their single-warhead mobile Topol-M (SS-27) intercontinental ballistic missile systems with multiple re-entry vehicles, the forces’ commander said Friday
About 360 silo-based Stiletto missiles are currently deployed in the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, with each missile carrying six warheads.
A total of six ICBM systems of the fourth and fifth generations are on active duty, including four silo-based, RS-18, RS-20B (SS-18 Satan), RS-20V(modified SS-18 Satan), RS-12M2 (Topol-M), and two mobile systems RS-12M (Topol) and RS-12M2 (Topol-M), Solovtsov said.
Vladimir Putin said last month that developing Russia’s strategic forces is the main priority on the national defense agenda.
“Maintaining a strategic balance will mean that our strategic deterrent forces should be able to guarantee the neutralization of any potential aggressor, no matter what modern weapons systems he possesses,” the president told a meeting with top military officials.
As of January 1, Russia possessed 927 nuclear delivery vehicles and 4,279 nuclear warheads for strategic offensive weapons, while the United States owns 1,255 and 5,966, respectively, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

Denver May Not Land 2008 Convention
WASHINGTON (AP) – Mile-high hopes are
dimming that Denver will secure the 2008 Democratic convention.
Democrats posted against-the-odds victories in several statewide elections last month in the West, making Denver an attractive choice for a party looking to expand on recent gains in the Republican-leaning region. But even once-optimistic Colorado boosters are lowering their odds to 50-50 that Denver will beat out New York City for the convention.
Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar said this week that in private conversations Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean had expressed legitimate concerns about whether Denver can raise the necessary $55 million and put on a seamless convention.

Comparison to Bush Disgusts Chimps
by Milo Cornelius Science Newswire staff writer
(Science Newswire) DES MOINES — Conservatives howl when anyone compares George W. Bush to Hitler, and the left rolls their eyes when the right compares Bush to Winston Churchill or Franklin Delano Roosevelt, but no one has taken much offense when Bush is compared to a chimp—until now. Chimps who have been taught to communicate with humans have unanimously expressed anger and dismay at being compared with President Bush.
Over the last few decades, researchers have been able to teach primates to communicate with American Sign Language, lexigrams, and computers. Although their vocabulary is rudimentary, it is more than adequate not only for asking for basic needs to be met, but for expressing feelings and opinions.
Their distress was first discovered when a researcher was working on basic math with signing chimp Washoe, and she overheard another scientist refer to Bush as a “chimp faced moron.” She stopped her lesson to sign over and over “bush dirty bad stupid not chimp,” and persisted until the offending person told her that he agreed Bush was not a chimp, and that chimps are not dirty bad and stupid like Bush.
In another case, Lana, a chimp taught to use lexigrams on a computer, asked her trainer to show her pictures of other chimps on the internet. When websites like Smirking Chimp or Bush or Chimp came up instead, Lana gave a distress howl and defecated on her computer viewing stool, which is highly unusual for the otherwise potty trained chimp…

We just got here after a harrowing day of real crap dished out by american airlines, which it turns out is really also Mexicana airlines, and is a shabby fuckin shell of itself…..
I wrote most of the day up on one of the planes and in one of the many wrong terminals and airlines that we were sent to…
and I expect we will post it soon.
The good news is that after I had such a bad experience in NYC (and Miami too) cub med upgraded us to a really fancy part of the hotel where we get all sorts of extra fancy ammenities…a free auto refilling minibar with crona in it that I dont drink…and free ethernet access unlimited, and free roomservice…and its just nice and pretty.
You will get pictures as Ive brought the whole camera setup so I can download em…
The passport stamping and customs thing took like 2 hours also….
I had a big fight with an AA floor manager guy and had a good cry and lots of people agreeing with me…Will was even concerned. I suppose that after a week of no sleep and careening around, it was a little much to have some power trip asshole who thinks hes the homeland security man rip the tags off my bags and yell that I wasnt gonna be allowed to fly out of there today….
because I called him an asshole under my breath and they have a NO TOLERANCE rule for LANGUAGE…..
I think that means that you cant joke about blowing up the plane or osama or whatever…I dont think it means that youre not allowed to swear!
So, Im after this jerk…I finally got his name even though he hid his badge….said I had no right to know his name or employee number!!
Oh well….
I lost the day and maybe tomorrow because of all the long hiking and running to and fro …and spent an extra hundred dollars stuck in the airport and trying to feed us and get us whatever little ammenities that we couldnt bring past the checkpoint.
Im fried….
Nick how was the live show?
PJ, did you finish?
I was just lamenting the end of MS…and I hope that Marc and the crew do a little memorial to it, now having the year under his belt.
I must download and listen to Davids Goldfart show and watch left of the dial if I brought it…
here I am guys but its dark so I dont know where I am…..
Oh my . . . I am sleepy!
Got up way to early this morning.
Oh man, I need the times…I left it with Mom….
I hope they have it here.
We have these nifty little CM credit cards that have an umbilical cord to MY real credit card….they have a silver botique and a newsstand and all….it seems like things are expensive….and some people tip….I have no pesos yet so I will have to see what the deal is with that.
Hey Melina,
Sorry for your troubles getting out of the country. At least you weren’t on a No-Fly list. Get some rest now that you’re settled in. The LIVE show sucked today. I did have Vernon and Andy in the listening audience. Sean bailed when he learned there wasn’t anybody skyping. I just talked about a few things and read from the chat. It was okay. The conference makes me a little bit nervous anyway being that I’m basically a shy person when there’s more than two ppl around. I won’t be doing a LIVE show for the next two Saturday’s because of the holidays and because it seems no one is really interested. I don’t have as many friends as John Ong. So that’s the way the cookie crumbles. I did take my new camcorder out this morning. Added a clip to my podcast page and also added a new page to my site with one additional clip. Also did a renovation of my site. Take a look. Well, n e way. Have fun. Wish I were there. Pick me up a HOT guy and ship him to Bham. I’m horny!
Well I guess I’m gonna climb into bed now. I’d stay up but I’d just drift off and I’d much prefer to do that in the bed. Goodnight everyone. Night Melina and Will. Happy cruising!
Catch you tomorrow Nick…I just ordered a shrimp cocktail from room service…Im starving….the TV is in spanish….

Yes, 😎 Merry Saturnalia :yippee:
Not only a pagan festival but A Roman festival, AND sexy and nasty cartoon.
I was looking toward SciFI cuz I think I even have a book called that — now I have to search eek 🙄 😉
wvmc3d I hoped one of you would ask Star and the Plow, SF on a Thursday But one may have to check which night (these days)has the “traditional” music.

Druid, there was a book http://preview.tinyurl.com/yxwukh. Only you would know that!
I only know of it from Latin class. Now I want to speak Irish in a pub. The Latin doesn’t help.
I will have to go back in there. I spend a fair amount of time in that area, mainly for food. I have friends who go there for the music.
 night all see y’all later.
MM (giggle), I knew Pliny wrote of us, which was 😎 Did that answer for you? In otherwords, I am not amused with the Romans.
Wow, I had better focus more and WORK! All this to come up now, especially with what I have been “forcing” out of my mind.

wvmc3d, I use to know the Catholic mass (when 6) in Latin. And ears perk still when they do Christmas Mass from Rome (Hmmmm) on TV. I am jealous.. Of all people to speak a “dead” language :reaper: 😎 …
I can kinda (weakly) follow, But you can talk with my hubby. He took Latin, but when one doesn’t use, one loses. But now when I have a question I ask hubby and now also you. 😉 TeeHee

Druid, I keep drifting away from the box.
Latin has been very good to me but when one doesn’t use, one loses indeed. Junior HS too many years ago. I intend to head over to Clement St. and have a Harp for you in the next week, or perhaps on my way to see Marc. Thanks for planting that seed.
Stay dry and warm.
