So, the Democrats won 30 House seats (probably 31, counting FL-13), and took back the Senate (much as the Republican media vultures would like Tim Johnson to croak). So naturally, Timmy Potatohead invites one of the most irrelevant Republicans (next to George W. Bush) out there – the Newtster – to Press his Meat. Then it’s a couple of Republican media whores from the NY Times, David Brooks, and Tom “my head is flat” Friedman. Whoopie!
Over at CBS, Bush buddy Bobby Schieffer has an “exclusive” interview with Colin “the gutless wonder” Powell, who will no doubt tell us that, now that everybody else has finally realized Iraq was a lie and a scandal – and we’re so far into it, that there’s no “good” way out for anybody – he’s willing to criticize the cowards, traitors, liars, and thieves in the Bush Administration, too. Woulda been heroic before we’d gotten into this mess. Now, it’s just kinda pathetic.
Over on the Goebbels Network, Harry Reid joins George Snufalufagus, to tell us that, sorry, Tim Johnson’s not dead yet, and, at the Roundtable, it’s George :jerk: Will, EJ “Grey Poupon” Dionne of the WaPost, Time’s Richard “don’t call me Caasey” Stengel, of Time Magazine and Republican mouthpiece Torie Clarke. Then, the star of Grey’s Anatomy will be on to find a cure for malaria.
On Fux News Sunday, Teddy Kennedy goes one-on-one with Weaselface Wallace.ย I hope he kicks his ass.
Over on CNN’s Late Emission, it’s, well, who really cares about CNN?
Later, on 60 Minutes, Scott Pelley interviews three Holocaust survivors who see their archived German records for the first time, Lesley Stahl reports on Family Finding, an organization that locates family members of unadopted foster-care children, and Bob Simon for some reason profiles Dan “Larry the Cable Guy” Whitney.
Have a good one.

Mr. Gingrichโs mission, as he sees it, is to save American civilization from the gravest crisis it has confronted since the Civil War. He has also set as a goal what he calls the restoration of God to a central place in American government and culture.

The first species to be erased from this planetโs great and ancient Order of Cetaceans in modern times is not one of the charismatic sea mammals that have long been the focus of conservation campaigns, like the sperm whale or bottlenose dolphin.
It appears to be the baiji, a white, nearly blind denizen of the Yangtze River in China.

Never thought I would be so happy to see wolf blitzer and late emission….the skyy dish has been on the fritz and I get all confused if I cant see my timmeuh on a sunday morning!
So now they have kidnapped the red crescent in Iraq….never got what might be served by getting rid of medical people who are trying to help…..but whatever….
Druid,
Many, many moons ago I saw a river dolphin at the San Francisco Aquarium. I never heard of any breeding program so I assume they no longer have one. Do you know if they do?
is swimming with dolphins bad? Will wants to do it…..I suppose its one of those experiences that we should all have…? but I guess I have to see how they treat the dolphins….
Certainly, in a world where dolphins are getting netted all over the place and massacred, this is pretty much paradise…but its not exactly here that they do it, so I have to see what its like.
Sue P, Thank You again. I am so very thankful I heard the “news” from you first. This is very intense.
I know of the dolphin you speak of … but I haven’t been there for
many a moon. Again thank you, since I HAD FORGOTTEN. I chose “unlimited calling” not cable so I will call down there tomorrow — if open .
Do you know Paul Watson and what he stands for? He is probably going through “rough waters” hearing this.
(Which BTW it was great to see someone else using “many moons” …)

Thanks, Druid. It would be nice to know the fate of those dolphins. The news of their wild cousins demise is awful. I can’t imagine a way to say how sad it is. ๐
Melina, I hope you will take and post photos of Will and his dolphin romp. Perhaps he can apologize to them for what we have done to the Chinese River Dolphins. I know that after he has met them close up he will be their defender for a lifetime.
And I guess thats what makes the whole thing worthwhile…but I realize that its at a Wet and Wild place off the compound, and he is very anti waterpark and whatever….he hates lines and crowds and seems ot be wanting to lay around and read ….
Im looking at this massage out by the ocean under a tiki hut sorta thing….but we’ll see….

Hey Melina,
Good to hear you’re having a good time. As for massages? I gave one to a hot guy yesterday evening. I could fall in love with Jeff. But he’s not looking for anything long term. Whatever! It was so nice and sunny and warm here in Birmingham that I took my camcorder down by the lake this morning and did a video podcast of me talking to my friends. It should be available for viewing on my “Nickspeak” page right now. Oh well . . . looking forward to all your pix Melina. Have fun.
Sue P, Druid,
Do you refer to the SF Aquarium that used to be in Golden Gate Park? They are building a new one so in the meantime they are re-located downtown and are downsized. They shipped a lot of their animals to other places as a result. I have a friend who works there and I will ask him if he knows if there were any bajii there.
He used to feed the penguins every Monday afternoon and his wife who worked with me would summon me and watch the whole thing on penguin cam. Here is a story about something he is currently doing with coral. http://tinyurl.com/yndy8m
For your enjoyment, Marc Maron on Stacy Taylor’s KLSD show last week
http://www.archive.org/download/Maron_On_KLSD/stacytaylor-maron.mp3
Thank ya Web Hubble. Enjoyed the file.
wvmc3d, The Golden Gate aquarium is the one I saw. Thanks for finding out about the dolphins. That was a pretty nice aquarium when I saw it. I hope the new one will be even better.
Thanks Web Hubble! So, KLSD will be running the Sam Seder show (with Marc) next week in place of Stacy Taylor?
It sounds that way, since Stacy will be doing the Randi Rhodes show which is later in the day(?). … Oh it gets too complicated. In any case, I will be grabbing Marc’s broadcasts for sure.
Oh, cool, then I can check him out on Randi’s show. Not that I get a little sick of Randi, from time to time.
My local broadcast AAR affiliate drives me crazy.
We have a guy that does a half-hour weekend show which is the definition of pedantic. To start off the show he lists the Sunrise and Sundown times for that day (!), and the amount of daylight hours, along with some historical birthdays. (It sounds like he reads from this, BTW) He then either does an interview with some local yokel or plays back some politician’s long speech. Pretentiously, the host calls his show “The Connection”. To top it off, he actually lists a “Volume” and “Issue Number” for his show, like it is some archived journal you would find in the library.
The station runs his adverts all the time, and I always laugh when he gives a testimonial that his show has “a little bit of soul”.
If there was anything ripe for a parody, and which shows how some progressives get too full of themselves, this would be it.
wvmc3d, I was talking about the “old” one…, but ๐ since new Aquarium should be Better. YEA. But I miss the ol’ one already. SNIFF.
๐ re his wife and you friend and CAM ๐
…and your wife and you also…
When you go, I send “Cheers”. It was an Irish bartender there that told me what was meant by “Ni Neart …
They even let my (hubby and I) bring in our rather upset hybrid, who came in and layed under their table near bar. I doubt that today. No matter, they have Harp on TAP — c a l l first, since once in a blue moon they put in something else Irish — maybe a certain Guiness. It use to be a somewhat Irish radical place in certain beliefs. But now even the Radical is looking “normal”. (a weak joke:roll:)

(When I am working on things I have have a tendency to be a bit “mono focused” (monocular, so to speak). That is probably why I didn’t “get it”, re Saturnalia, immediately.
PAGAN: It use to just mean “of the country”, the root (of the word) in latin . I have seen the meaning change over the years … What year is it? “1984” ๐ฎ
I haven’t slept this day, so I might lay down for an hour or so.

Ah, Harp. Lager beer, from Guinness. Developed it in 1959 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the St. James Gate brewery (leased to Arthur Guinness in 1759; he got a 9,000 year lease at 45 pounds a year. Not a bad deal). I rather prefer the extra stout, myself, though it’s quite difficult for me to drink enough of it these days to reach the desired effect. I suppose that’s why they invented whiskey, but hard liquor tends to leave me on the floor, looking at everybody’s ankles, so I try to avoid it.
In the United States there is no legal minimum number of vacation days for workers. I guess we’re all supposed to be thankful to the rich for “giving us jobs.”
The rest of the world? Different. (As you read this, remember that 20 days means minimum four weeks vacation by law, not three.)
Here are a few examples:
Austria: 5 weeks, for elderly employees 6 weeks
Belgium: 20 days, premium pay
Brazil: 30 consecutive days, of which 10 can be sold back to the employer
Bulgaria: 20 business days
Croatia: 18 working days
European Union: 4 weeks, more in some countries
France: 7 weeks
Tunisia: 30 work days
Saudi Arabia: 15 days
Who else gets none? China…
I only wish we had one here. Terrestrial broadcast radio might be on its way out, but it sure would be nice to just turn it on in the car and have it be there. Especially since my car stereo doesn’t have an auxiliary input. Ah, that’s the story of my life. Always in search of an auxiliary input (just don’t tell my wife ).
Have you tried any of these PJ?
Yes, vacation should be mandated by law here (so should healthcare, for that matter). Then all businesses would be on an even footing.
Oh, yes. Rather fond of the Black & Tan. Drank a lot of those in DC, and occasionally here, though here I tend to drink the Molson XXX (a bit more oomph).
Haven’t seen the Porter around here.ย It looks tasty.
I’ve pissed and moaned about our “AAR” affiliate before but I met a guy the other night who confirmed my suspicion that the guy running the show was a righty good old boy old school yahoo who hasn’t a clue about what a progressive talker should be like. I think he secretly wants to sink AAR and the format. He also runs a righty talker for Clear Channel at the same time. I would almost rather not listen to it.
I’ve been through Pottsville a couple of times (home of Yuengling) and almost took the tour of the brewery. It’s similar to Coors(Rocky Mountain snake piss) in that most of the facility is apparently underground.
Lately, the wife and I march down to the liquor store and demand a box of their freshest wine. Actually, we get four boxes, sine you get a case deal that way. My “house blend” is a mason jar full of white, with a bit of red to give it a fruity little zip. Comes out a bit darker than a blush.
My late mother used to tell be to always wear clean socks without holes because you never knew who might be rolling around on the floor checking out your ankles.
Pottsville Pennsylvania always sounded to me like a location that should be in Rocky & Bullwinkle. I’ve done the Matt’s Brewery tour in Utica (no great shakes, but you get a few free samples). Didn’t get to do the St. James tour when I was in Dublin, sad to say. I also tried to get hooked up with a tour of Ram’s Gate brewery in London, but they were booked. I’ve meant to make my own beer for a long time now (had friends that made some kickass stuff), but have never gotten around to it. To intimidated by the need to keep everything ultra clean, I guess.
Well, if your mother wasn’t a fine Irish lass, she certainly sounds as if she hung about with a few Irishmen in her day.
Either that or something from Sid and Marty Kroft.
Doesn’t the St. James have a pub in the brewery?
The last GRAND NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP of the semester is gonna be on the air TONIGHT at 8 pm CENTRAL TIME on FreeRadioSAIC.org: Our motto is “We have our shit together” (actually no… we don’t. Not at all).

Re 34: It doesn’t do me much good to take a vacation anyway Andy. My work continues to pile up and is waiting for me when I return. But it would be nice if companies were required by law to give their employees at least 2 weeks paid vacation per year.
Yes, the “Gravity Bar,” (among others) in the Storehouse.
My last vacation was in January of 2004 and that was the first one I’d had in about 18-20 years. I’ve had long weekends and such but no real vacation.
re 48: I saw that on an episode of “Out of Ireland”
Ah, I got spoiled as a NYS employee. Accrued 4 hours of vacation every two weeks, until my 7th year, when it got bumped to 6. Couldn’t bank any more than 320 hours, so by the time I left there, I had to take a week off every three months. This was in addition to 5 personal days a year, plus 13 holidays (worked every holiday for the first couple of years, so I got extra days off for those, too), and also accumulated 4 hours of sick time every two weeks, too. Ah, those were the days. At SU, as an “exempt”employee, I got 4 weeks vacation. Had a bit of a problem with work piling up, but then I realized that life was too short, and started getting good at managing other people’s expectations. Not that I ever actually did anything when I was on vacation. Mostly I worked on whatever side jobs I had going, or tried to do the happy homeowner stuff, for which there never seems to be enough time.
One climber found dead on Mt Hood in Oregon
We are under the illusion, here in this country, that we are well off. It’s not all that true.
We’re like the wealthy family that has lost everything but no one really sees because they still have all the trappings of wealth and they are trying to marry off the daughter to a wealthy family so that they can stay in their class.
So True Kristapea, I have known so many families that were upper middle class and in one misfortune lost it all.
Bush talks of an ownership society. What he does not say is that the banks will own it all. It seems that in the last six years we have been plundered. It made me really pissed when Bush said “the american worker can compete with any nation when the playing field is level”. What he really meant was no vacation, no health benefits, no pension,……….
Here’s a story for Druid.

Being on vacation is very strange for me…I have to force myself to just stop and…whatever….
Ive got some pics …and I got Will hooked up with some older girls who are rather morose and emo as he is…..they dont want to do activities, so they are wandering round making fun of what the kids are doing. I guess he could join the group of teens that are doing this and that but …Im not sure if I can get him to.
This place has alot going on, so I think he’ll figure it out.
Im just wandering round listening to sam and taling to different people…speaking lots of spanish because its fun….
and reading my new york magazines that I havent had time for….
Cant get the survivor finale on spanish TV…oh well…no satellite dish hooked up here right now…just as well.
It will be on the internet tomorrow.
Sad about the climber, but I have to wonder what makes these guys go out in winter like that. Its one thing when a geek makes a series of mistakes and dies in the snowy mountains, but these guys have experience and chose to climb in a place that is gonna have storms and be cold.
OK, dolphin friends, Steinhart Aquarium formerly in GGP-SF has not had mammals since 1994 so no baiji are there. Sad
Thanks wvmc3d. Not unexpected but still sad.
