This has got to be the most un-holiday like weather I’ve ever seen here. Sure, we’ve had green Christmases before, but, damn, this rain is really annoying. At least it keeps the riff-raff away from the park. Only the real dog people go out in this crap. Unfortunately, the streets seem to be packed with cars. I suppose they’re out shopping or something. Pelosi says no to C-SPAN request on floor proceedings
WASHINGTON — Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi cited the need to preserve the ”dignity and decorum” of the House as she rejected a request Friday that C-SPAN operate its own cameras in covering the chamber.
The public service network has provided gavel-to-gavel television coverage of House proceedings since 1979. But the House leader has kept control of the cameras, with coverage generally limited to tight shots of the speaker or the podium.
The situation is similar in the Senate, which C-SPAN has televised since 1986.
C-SPAN’s chairman and chief executive told Pelosi, D-Calif., that under this arrangement, cameras are prevented ”from taking individual reaction shots or from panning the chamber, leaving viewers with an incomplete picture of what’s happening in the House of Representatives.”
Brian Lamb wrote Pelosi on Dec. 14 that media cameras long have been permitted to cover committee hearings and that for a dozen years or more independent cameras have been allowed into the chamber for joint sessions
and joint meetings in the House.

Penguin numbers tumble in South Atlantic
OSLO (Reuters) – Rockhopper penguins, a type featured in the movie “Happy Feet,” have suffered a mysterious 30 percent decline in numbers over five years in their South Atlantic stronghold, conservationists said on Friday.
The number of pairs of the small yellow-crested penguins in Britain’s Falkland Islands fell to 210,418 pairs in 2005-06 from 298,496 in 2000, perhaps because of climate change, a survey by Falklands Conservation said.
Figures from 1932 suggested that there were 1.5 million pairs at the time, giving an 85 percent fall in the species’ main habitat, it said. Smaller colonies live in Chile, Argentina and on southern islands.
“The decline of the rockhopper penguin in the Falkland Islands suggests a massive shift in the ecology of the southern Ocean, perhaps linked to climate change,” said Geoff Hilton, a biologist at Britain’s Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). “We don’t really know what is going wrong.”

Fred, the teenager flies west today connecting in Denver. How are things looking there? I’m concerned about his connecting flight out of DEN to RNO.
The way Denver is working is that scheduled flights are pretty much back to normal but passengers who got grounded by the blizzard have to fly out on a seat available basis .. the canary ( translated cheap cheap cheap) airlines are not trying to put on additional equipment to relieve the problem .. They also are making the passengers pay for their own lodging while waiting .. :gate::omg::jason::jason:

Massachusetts lawmakers are set to launch a blizzard of investigations in the new Congress, probing issues such as wartime contracting, post-Katrina housing assistance, and the Bush administration’s relationship with Cuba and other countries in Latin America.
In what could be closely watched proceedings, two members of the Massachusetts delegation — representatives William D. Delahunt of Quincy and Martin T. Meehan of Lowell — are planning joint committee hearings to examine the administration’s Iraq war policies, particularly the reasons for the military’s lagging efforts to train Iraqi troops. Delahunt is in line to become chairman of the House International Relations Committee’s subcommittee on oversight and investigations, and Meehan will take over the same subcommittee on the House Armed Services Committee.

Saudi lawyer Takes On Religious Court System
Lahem’s involvement in any case has come to mean trouble, or at least intense scrutiny, for judges across the kingdom.
He took the case of a high school chemistry teacher, Mohammad al-Harbi, who was sentenced last year to 40 months in prison and 750 lashes for “trying to sow doubt” among his students by speaking positively about Judaism and Christianity. King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz pardoned him.
Another client, Rabbah al-Quwai’i, a journalist, was arrested this year for “harboring destructive thoughts” and accused of promoting homosexuality by commenting on Internet forums that it was a genetic predisposition. The case was thrown out of court.
Two factors have worked in Lahem’s favor: a reform-minded king and, since Abdullah took control of the country several years ago, a freer press that has helped publicize the lawyer’s cases. But Lahem is still up against a deeply traditional justice system and widespread public ignorance about human rights and the rule of law.

Unfucking believable. I just spent a good 20-30 minutes trying to extract a recording of Marcs tribute to Joseph Barbera so I can email it to my friend. Back in the analog day, I would have had it done in a couple of minutes. 😡 Stupid computers, making everything so damned complicated! :fu:
hey everyone…Krista, did you try wavepad?
its pretty easy with that.

Is that the craziest thing youve ever heard?
so, pj…do you mean that the storm was just rain and its blown by?…or is it still in the middle of the country?
I want a white christmas…..guess not, huh?
Gee, KP, I think you’re using the wrong software if it took you that much time. Lots of freeware available to do that sorta thing. I used to be able to edit the commercials out of the Marc Maron Show in about five minutes.
It would have taken just as long to download wavepad and figure that out too. Probably longer. It’s done and I’m irked.
Looks like the storm is on the coast right now. All rain, except for some snow up in Maine. Here, it’s drizzily, misty rain. Supposed to be rainy and in the fifties here today, upper forties tomorrow, an in the forties on Monday. Might be a little snow on Monday, but it aint gonna be white. Might as well start dreaming of a mooshy Christmas.
This stupid music Match program on this computer keeps coming up as the default player even though I have changed the default to itunes, many times. And I can’t delete the program because it’s my friends’ computer and he’s got a bunch of music on there. And it takes forever for it to respond to my shutting it off. Anyways, it’s done now.
Well, when you get de-irked, you should try something like wavepad (or Audacity, which is popular), just for fun. Wavepad is really quite easy to use and intuitive, but of course everything has at least a little bit of a learning curve. And let me save Cnick the trouble, by saying that you should get a Mac, because it comes with Garageband, for free! At least, I think it comes for free.
I think Melina is gonna need a good stiff drink when she finally gets home. Sounds like she’s in for a frustrating journey. :40:
Yeah, I think I will get a MAC eventually. I was looking at the $900 Imac’s the other day. I wish they came in black, white is gonna look shitty after a while and it doesn’t really go with my “decor”.
Yeah, white would not be my first choice, either. I’d prefer an AMD processor, too. The case I used for my wife’s computer is pretty cool looking. Black with some nifty blue LEDs. Plus, it’s aluminum, so it weighs next to nothing. My case is pretty cool, too. Big sucker.
Yeah, flying is a real pain in the ass under normal circumstances these days. Just not worth the hassle, if you can avoid it. Little far to drive from Mexico to CT though.

Yes PJ, all new Apple Computers come with a software suite of programs for creating audio and video podcasts out-of-the-box. Go here to read about this great software. Garageband and iWeb are what I use to create all of my podcasts. Yes, they come with all new Intel Macs sold and for all you Windows lovers there is the added BONUS of being able to boot Windows XP and Vista on a Mac using a free program called “Bootcamp”. You can order a new Mac with Windows pre-installed from MacMall.

Is there any option with a Mac, other than buying one all put together?
By options do you mean: Hardware options or software options PJ?
Happy holidays everyone! Hey there Druid! Did you celebrate Winter Solstice?
I know that there were some folks who were able to get around the TPM, and run OS X on regular PC architecture. In fact, I seem to recall that it actually ran faster, though there was something to do with not getting the “full” OS X, because you had to ditch the few parts of the OS that required the TPM. That’s all a bit (hell, more than a bit – a few bytes, at least) beyond me. Being able to run on whatever hardware you wanted to use would be nice, but Apple would not be happy. People always seem to argue about Apple vs. Microsoft, but Apple is primarily a hardware vendor (they really should’ve licensed their architecture the way IBM did the PC), and Microsoft is a software vendor.
I mean, if I wanted to, I would like to be able to go out and buy a motherboard, case, video card, and whatever other components, and put them all together.
:santacool: I most surely did. Thank You. But I will disappear for awhile after the dark of this (night/to day).
:reaper: Listening to Evanescence :dancers: but just “dancin” to myself
BUT it is all your fault :rofl2: CNick, you kept dealing with Music and the iPOD :dancers: :pirate:
[There’s A “{(ol’ school) “Murder” right outside my window.}]
Yes, it would be nice if everything was open. I agree with you PJ. As for Apple hardware: You’d need to buy a Mac Pro desktop if you wanted to add internal hard drives and upgrade video cards in the future. The Imac should be maxed out as for hard drive capacity and processor speed from the start. You can’t add a new internal hard drive to an Imac. You’d have to buy a external drive. Which is what I have. But I really need a firewire external hard drive for speed. I have a USB external. RAM can be added to any Apple computer. I maxed mine out when I bought it. But you can sometimes buy RAM cheaper from other vendors and add it yourself. You cannot upgrade the video card in a Imac. So if your all about upgrades then you’d be better off buying a Mac Pro than a Imac. Mac Pros come in a Silver case and have lots of space for upgrades though the low end Mac Pro has pretty much everything one should need.
I don’t want to upgrade. I want to build my own. That’s the big drawback, for me, personally. That’s part of the fun. I mean, the box that sedition radio is running on was a collection of pieces I had sitting around. I blew the dust off of a motherboard, threw in a PII processor that was in a drawer, tossed in a video card, NIC, hard drive, installed SUSE and a shoutcast server, and was up and running. For my computer, I bought some higher end parts (at the time, anyway) and put together a very solid machine. Same thing with my wife’s computer, and for my stepson, I put together a nifty little thing that’s the size of a thick book. I’ve got a few more piles of stuff sitting around here, too. I think I’ll put together a DVR. I have petty much everything I need, except I’d need to get a large hard drive, which is pretty cheap these days. I mean, I can get a 300 gig hard drive for under $100.
That’s cool PJ. If your all about building a computer from scratch then Apple is definitely not an option. But if you want a machine that has software (in every Mac) that will allow you to create a podcast, a movie or music. Then you have the option of buying a Windows machine which will require you purchase additional software to do the job. Or you can buy a Mac with all the software you need to do those things built in.
PJ, 😳 (Blushing – for real) Can I ask a question or two about computers? They are rather pedestrian. I didn’t want ask until after The :santacool: Holidays but much is be spoken, re computers.
I will save the hard ones till after the first. :rofl2: Some questions may be, after the first, on The philosophy of Computers … taking from the ’80s till now … But I also will not ask during your school … so when does that start, if I am around?
AIV
I wonder if ex-ny’er ever got the Maron shows downloaded?
Actually, it’s more like you can get an IBM PC clone, and download a plethora of free apps to do all of that, and more. If you buy a storebought computer with Windows, the hardware vendor generally has all of that installed, but I prefer to go out and try different stuff. If you install a Linux distro, there’s so much software to choose from, it’s mind boggling. And I’m no Linux geek (wish I was), but it’s gotten very easy to install and use these days.
It’s all out there, and it’s mostly free (or very cheap), but there is a disadvantage in that there is so much out there that you can run across some really crappy stuff, and there’s lots of stuff to try.
For me, I wouldn’t take what Apple gave me, any more than I’ll take what Dell or HP or Microsoft gave me.
Sure, ask away, Druid, though I’m not really much of an expert on anything.
I don’t think ex got anything downloaded. She, for whatever reason, was unable to download from work, and isn’t up for downloading via dial-up.
If it did not work for me (my Imac) then I’d look elsewhere also. But the software has worked better for me than anything else I’ve ever used. And I used Frontpage exclusively in the past to do web pages. I like Frontpage (a windows program) just fine. It’s just that it is a lot easier to create a podcast and a website using the software in my Imac than it ever was with my Windows machine. Both operating systems are great. I am waiting anxiously for Vista to be released so I can boot it on my Imac, just for the helluvit. But I’ve found that OSX works fine for everything I need or wish to do. And I do not have to spend lots of time looking for the proper software to do the job. It just works. How is that for sounding like a Apple commercial? Steve Jobs needs to pay me for doing this! Ha!
What happens if one needs to errase a program, but it is not appearing under (main) menu under (green Start Button)?
Does one (me,) just wait until it “appears” one day?
AIV
You are right about there being lots of freeware programs out there. Alot of it good. Much of it bad and buggy. That goes for Windows and OSX freeware programs. I’d rather stick with the companies that have the money for R&D. Than some
shade treesoftware geek.Druid, go to the Control Panel, and then click on add/remove programs. If the program you want to remove is there, you can uninstall it from there. Otherwise, go to the folder that the program is installed in, and look for an uninstall program. Odds are there will be.

ok…Im home….it was a pretty rough trip what with lines and craziness….late flight and mu crazy Mom parking a million miles from the airport for no real reason…and she got there 3 hours early and waited because she was nervous about driving at night!
Ive been cleaning for 2 hours because Mom doesnt do that much…and now so tired…but also so happy to be HOME!!
Tomorrow is Christmas eve!!
I have much to do and a problem with Kitty’s tail feathers…..
ex, I think this place is even bigger and it is the day after Xmas so I can’t imagine the ticket situation being a problem. The show I went to at the PunchLine was not full.
Melina, glad you made it back. A Mom who doesn’t clean. Interesting and somehow very foreign to me.
welcome back Melina!!!
wow…i got tired from just reading about your trip back:omg:
I odnt know if this has been posted but if not its worth a read….
Drobny blogs on HuffPo about AAR
Huh, then I’ll just buy a ticket when I get there. Shouldn’t be a problem. Hey wv, how are you getting to North Beach? It’s a two-bus trip for me from the outer Richmond. Hey, think I should bring Marc a batch of my homemade butternut squash coconut curry soup? Is that too New Jersey house-wifey of me, or do you think, being on the road, he might appreciate some homemade soup he can heat up in his room later? Or, since he doesn’t really know me, maybe he’ll worry it’s poisoned or something. Maybe I should forget it.
Melina, your experience out at JFK airport on the way down has got to be one of the worst travel stories I’ve ever heard. Except for the woman from India I once met at JFK or Seattle airport who told me that in India, it’s common for them to change your flight to the following *week*. Wow.
Buy welcome back and hope you get to recover from your vacation and the upset tummy.
Kitty with tailfeathers?
thanks qg….yes, its been quite a trip….did you see thr pic of the birds I put up last night? meeting those macaws made the trip so much better!
ex, I am supposed to meet a friend down there earlier so I guess I will drive but probably in the afternoon.
Where is pj? I’m ready to rassle.
nite guys…..best sleep a bit before I hit the wrapping paper tomorrow!
aww…night night Melina, have a good night’s rest
PJ, Festivus can’t end until we pin you down….and i’m not going to take your place:smack::shock:
qg, I think I will shut up now and maybe you will Alpha Omega this day unless some candles show up.
Who knows what tomorrow may bring? pj in the mud or jello?
Goodnight Melina, sleep well.
aww…okay then.
i guess i have to wrestle myself. which i usually do, but emotionally not physically:fustrate:
hope i don’t knock over the pole:40:
20 more minutes or so to the end of Thursday night’s podcast, but the cat is knocking stuff off the bookshelf to demand hugs, so once again I’ve got to balance him and the wireless keyboard on my lap, with legs propped up on the desk. Sheesh.
the price we pay for the funny, huh ex-ny’er?
:smack::banana:
So I’ve got the cat draped along my chest and torso, keyboard balanced on my knees, and feet propped up on the desk. A little difficult to type, but not too bad actually. :billcat:
I’ve been meaning to ask, is anyone else here as enchanted with the Leonard Cohen songs from the I’m Your Man film? I have not been able to get the following songs out of my head: Tower of Song, I’m Your Man, Everybody Knows and The Future. Is it a bad thing that I want to have sex with Nick Cave? Even though it’s silly and over the top theatrical, his version of I’m Your Man turns me on so much :hubba::hubba: Nick Cave
That Cohen film was great. I was very skeptical. I loved it.
Quitegirl, the week’s shows are safely downloaded and stored in my iTunes, only took, ohhh, maybe 13 hours or so to download. Luckily, the latest iTunes update that I downloaded a week or so ago provides a pause button during podcast download. So after I ran the download as late last night as I could prop my eyes open, I paused the downloads, pu tthe computer in sleep mode, and then released the pause when I woke up this morning. Went out to my mother’s for her open house, and when I came home tonight, voila! All five episodes neatly lined up in the podcast folder in iTunes.
By the way, it is unually cold here tonight, at least out here by the ocean.:cold:
Wv, I finally got to see the film the other night at home (got it on dvd from neighborhood movie rental store). That is really something how involved he got in buddhism and meditation. I was very disappointed that the film did not have Nick Cave’s :hubba: performance of The Future. It’s on the cd that has the music from the film. Did you got see it in a theater? Did that version have Cave doing The Future?
i haven’t seen that film, but i do love Nick Cave:hubba:
well, at least you have the podcasts that you can download when ever you want. i usually have to scramble to record bits and pieces or hope that someone recorded it :pirate:
it’s 49 degrees in Lost Angeles…..but it sure was windy today!:cold:
Whew! Just finished listening to the Thursday night show, and since I’m working backwards, I’ve now listened to Friday and Thursday night, all in one go – three solid hours of The Funny, and live in person three days from now! Enough for tonight, then. I’m going to sign off and go watch a dvd a friend gave me about the VitaMix machine he just bought. Wall to wall fun and frivoloty at my place :dancers:
haha
Night ex-ny’er!
:peace:
49.8 degrees F, it says at the weatherunderground website, but it feels a good 10 degrees colder outside. My hands and nose where actually smarting/tingling from the chill when I walked just a few blocks tonight. It says the wind is only 9mph. Colder air coming off the ocean, maybe.
Ok, for real now, goodnight all. :fire:
bundle up :cold:
