Hey, I hope everybody had a nice day yesterday, whether you were one of the many people who had to work to keep things running, or you had the day off and were either celebrating with family, or just enjoying a long weekend. Today is the first day of Kwanzaa, which runs through January 1st, so here’s to a Joyous week, culminating, of course, in the Twilight Zone Marathon (when we play the “how many seconds will it take to identify the episode” game – anything over ten seconds, and you have to drink). If you’re heading back to work today (as my wife is), well, sucks to be you. At least it’s a short week, with another long weekend to look forward to. Except I think we’re stuck with a whole lot of AAR reruns. Fresh Malloy tonight, though (I think), and don’t forget that if you’re in the San Fran area, you can catch Marc tonight or tomorrow at Cobb’s. Have a good one.

Strong quakes jolts Taiwan 6.7
TAIPEI (AFP) – An undersea earthquake measuring magnitude 6.7 has rocked Taiwan, seismologists said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The tremor struck Tuesday at 20:26 pm (1226 GMT) with its epicenter 23 kilometers (14 miles) southwest of Hengchun in the southernmost tip of Taiwan. It originated 22 kilometers under the sea.
Taiwan, which lies near the junction of two tectonic plates, is regularly shaken by earthquakes. The country’s worst, a 7.6-magnitude quake, killed some 2,400 people in September 1999

Tsunami aims at Philippines after quake
TAIPEI, Taiwan – A powerful quake struck off southwestern Taiwan on Tuesday, triggering a potentially destructive tsunami that was headed toward the Philippines on the second anniversary of the deadly waves that killed thousands in south Asia.
The quake, with a magnitude of between 6.7 and 7.2, was felt throughout Taiwan, Japan’s Meteorological Bureau said. It swayed buildings and knocked objects off the shelves in the capital, Taipei.
The bureau said the 3-foot-high tsunami was expected to hit Basco in the Philippines.
“There is a possibility of a destructive local tsunami,” the bureau said.
Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau said the quake measured magnitude 6.7, while the U.S. Geological Survey and Japanese bureau put it at magnitude 7.2.

Rush at end, but holiday sales fall short
By MICHAEL BARBARO
Published: December 26, 2006
….Shoppers swarmed discount stores and mobbed suburban malls over the crucial holiday weekend, but the final burst of buying is expected to fall short of retailersโ expectations.
Visa USA, the credit card company, said yesterday that it would lower its closely watched forecast for holiday spending. Based on purchases by credit and debit card holders, Visa said sales rose 6.5 percent in November and December, compared with the same period last year, down from its initial forecast of a 7.5 percent gain.
The companyโs unexpected downward revision โ and the millions of dollars in lost sales it represents โ could have broad implications for the nationโs merchants, who count on purchases during the holiday season for nearly half of their business.
For consumers, it will probably translate into even deeper discounts over the next week, as they begin redeeming millions of gift cards.
Industry analysts said that, after a strong, discount-induced start the day after Thanksgiving, consumer spending slowed in December and never fully recovered. A soft housing market and high fuel prices pinched consumer spending, while unseasonably warm temperatures damped sales of cold-weather clothing from New York to Chicago….

Global Economy Faces A Dangerous Year
Rising inflation and falling home prices are likely to push the US economy into recession by the second half of 2007. Gathering economic weakness, combined with negative real yields on US Treasury securities and growing political pressure to weaken the dollar will lead to significant dollar depreciation against most currencies.
Economic growth in Asia, Europe and Latin America will also weaken in 2007. Slowing global economic growth will be very bad news for equity markets around the world. Dollar depreciation and rising international energy and grain prices will be good news for precious metals.
The growing use of corn, wheat, soybeans and other grains to produce biofuels is expected to nearly double prices for these commodities in 2007. In addition to grain-related foods, prices for other food staples that are grain-dependent, including meat and milk products, will also head higher in 2007. The result will be much higher than expected US inflation. Consumer price inflation (CPI) in the US is already significantly higher than CPI in Germany, Switzerland, the UK and Japan. In 2007, US inflation will accelerate, widening the inflation gap between it and other countries.
By every measure, inflation in the US has clearly accelerated since 2004. In 2005, the Federal Reserveโs preferred measure of inflation, the personal consumption expenditure (PCE) deflator exceeded 2% for the first time since 1995. The core PCE has continued to accelerate in 2006, and will likely top 2.5% by the end of the year. This is significant because the Fedโs stated aim is to keep core PCE between 1.5% and 2%. The steady acceleration of core PCE shows that inflation from rising energy prices has penetrated the broader US economy.
Despite the obvious acceleration of inflation, the Federal Reserve shifted monetary policy into neutral in late summer. The Fed has justified more accommodative monetary policy in the face of rising inflation by suggesting that slowing US economic growth will eventually mitigate inflation.
This is a huge gamble because US inflation is being pushed higher by supply-driven energy price shocks rather than demand…cont’d

Auditors expecting Katrina fraud to reach $2B
By HOPE YEN, Associated Press Writer Mon Dec 25, 5:17 PM ET
WASHINGTON – The tally for Hurricane Katrina waste could top $2 billion next year because half of the lucrative government contracts valued at $500,000 or greater for cleanup work are being awarded without little competition.
Federal investigators have already determined the Bush administration squandered $1 billion on fraudulent disaster aid to individuals after the 2005 storm. Now they are shifting their attention to the multimillion dollar contracts to politically connected firms that critics have long said are a prime area for abuse.
…
Based on their track record, it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw another billion more in waste,” said Clark Kent Ervin, the
Homeland Security Department’s inspector general from 2003-2004. “I don’t think sufficient progress has been made.”
He called it inexcusable that the Bush administration would still have so many no-bid contracts. Under pressure last year,
Federal Emergency Management Agency director David Paulison pledged to rebid many of the agreements, only to backtrack months later and reopen only a portion.

And what ever happened to Conyers’ pledge to launch impeachment investigations hearings once the Democrats took charge? Poof! Gone. Dem-deluded fall for it every time, even those old enough to know better. Delusion reigns. Even among the supposedly informed.

I normally would not forward long comments from my socialist discussion list, but having just read James Petras’ latest article (which I will post after this), I want to share this excellent summation of a friend of mine. My friend responds to a request, by a Code Pink activist who attends our discussions, to comment on Michael Bard’s review of Carter’s book Palestine Peace Not Apartheid, on the jewishvirtuallibrary website. Please excuse grammatical, spelling and syntax errors, I’m sending this out more or less as is (I did some preliminary cleanup):
The ideology of Zionism is nationalism, and most Zionists, like the author, are tribal in their mentality and methods. Their tribe or nation comes first. This tribe in the 20th century has been in alliance with imperialism to re-establish its’ state and that is Israel. This alliance with imperialism and its’ offer to be a gendarme in the middle east is the means by which it operates. It now plays a role in defending and expanding its’ state by organizing support and encouragement for the US to expand the war in the middle east first by attacking Iraq and now by attacking Iran. This expansion of the US “war against Islam” has also led to the attack of Ethiopia against Somalia. This invasion was planned in Washington and backed by Israel.
It also fans the flames of anti-Semitism by its’ actions and alliances. It supported South African apartheid and helped supply weapons for murder in Guatemala.
Carter and other pro-imperialist critics of Israel now believe that Israel is becoming a liability for US imperialism and threatens their overall interests. Most capitalists in the US are now opposed to Bush and see the continued war in Iraq or an attack on Iran as seriously damaging US imperialist interests. In fact, this is one of the reasons, the Democrats won the election. The capitalist media were savaging Bush every day and they along with the real antagonism to Bush’s war brought the change in Congress. There is no savaging of Bush however for preparations for war with Iran (or for invading Afghanistan – even media icons like Jon Stewart, Randi Rhodes, and military rebel Lt. Watada express support for that atrocity – ex-nyer). Why the silence of the capitalist media? In part it has to do with the agenda of Israel. Israel is the leading force to expand the war to Iran. Any study of who is pushing this war would lead directly to Israel and the role that the Zionists play in shaping US foreign policy in the Middle East.
The question you have to ask is why the Democratic politicians who you support continue to support this regime. Has there been one Democratic politician who has criticized the threat to attack Iran or criticized the treatment of the Palestinians? We have a one party state and both parties are for the defense and victory of US imperialism.
I also do agree however with parts of the criticism of Carter in Michael Bard’s document. The apartheid state of Saudi Arabia where non-citizens have second class rights is not a part of Carter’s analysis of the regimes that surround Israel. Many of these regimes would not exist without the US and other imperialist nations intervening to set them up and keeping them in business. Carter by the way before he left office was shipping weapons to El Salvador to be used by the military. The religious regimes in the Middle East and around the world are a detriment to democratic rights. Carter accepts the right to have religious states whether it is Israel or other states.
Also Carter continues to argue that Israel is a “democratic state”. This is a flagrant lie. Non-Jews in Israel do not have the same rights as Jews. Institutions like the Jewish National Fund which acts as a agent of the government is in control of stolen Palestinian land and only distributes it to Jews. This flagrantly discriminatory policy is well known by Carter but his real purpose is not to change the nature of the Jewish state into a secular state but to pressure Israel to make a deal with the Palestinian leadership.
It again says something about the power of Zionism in the United States that no one Democratic politician has come to the defense of Carter. This confirms of coarse that the Zionist lobby has intimidated the US Congress and has used it’s power in the media to silence or smear all critics. As we have discussed before this development is different than other lobbies. Prior to the 2nd WW, there was a division in the capitalist class about the war in Europe that reflected itself in the media.
Today the defense of Israel and damage control for Israel is unquestioned. Those like Cynthia McKinney who are critical of Israel face attacks not only from the Zionists but from Pelosi and the supporters of Zionism in the Congress.
It might be useful for Carter to do a book about how the Zionist lobby has silenced people in the United States such as Black professors and Jewish professors who are critical of Israel. They helped the apartheid regime by spying on anti-apartheid activists in the US and they have collaborated with US intelligence in their US and international operations inside the US.
How soon I forgot: James Brown supported Nixon and Reagan. Harry Brown offering some great insights.
Why Condemning Israel and the Zionist Lobby is So Important by James Petras posted yesterday at dissidentvoice:
http://preview.tinyurl.com/u5l2a
Many Jewish writers, including those who are somewhat critical of Israel, have raised pointed questions about our critique of the Zionist power configuration (ZPC) in the United States and what they wrongly claim are our singular harsh critique of the state of Israel. Some of these accusers claim to see signs of ‘latent anti-Semitism,’ others, of a more ‘leftist’ coloration, deny the influential role of the ZPC arguing that US foreign policy is a product of ‘geo-politics or the interests of big oil. With the recent publication of several widely circulated texts, highly critical of the power of the Zionist ‘lobby’, several liberal pro-Israel publicists generously conceded that it is a topic that should be debated (and not automatically stigmatized and dismissed) and perhaps be ‘taken into account.’

Hi wv; have a good time with your friends tonight; I won’t invite myself to your table or anything, since you probably want to hang with your friends. (Always happens when I get close to meeting anyone on this blog, it never seems to really happen; guess I just don’t fit the vibe here or something; I’m actually thinking of quitting coming here for this very reason; maybe will just lurk).
I’m debating whether to take a taxi both ways or not. I was just checking. 511.org, and it recommends a long ride on the 1 California bus, and then transferring to an open air cable car the rest of the way. That’s going to be an adventure in this weather. Although it gives departure and arrival times for the bus and cable car, I have learned to distrust Muni’s posted schedules. I’ll see, may do public transit one way and not the other.

Yea, Druid is here also! Is it wet and rainy out your way dear lady? Can we dance? I heard you talking about me. Something about a “hard rock”? And there appeared Andy. Hey dude, how’s it going?
So where is Travis hiding tonight? I hear tell he has made some effort to communicate here.
So Nick did you see any family yesterday?
I am sitting in my computer chair in front of my Imac looking at the blog with a electric blankie over my legs to keep me warm. Just a little cold air makes me shiver to the bone. We southerners are not as adaptable as you northerners.
I did not go home this Christmas. I was all by my lonesome here in Birmingham and I kinda, sorta loved it. But was kinda, sorta missing the old days. Christmas just ain’t the same anymore. I did talk to my sister over the phone. That was about the extent of family togetherness.
Oops, It’s going OK. Back to work today which sucked after having to work the whole weekend.
Yeah I just couldn’t get into Christmas at all this year. Dinner at my brothers was great and the niece and nephew are old enough that we can talk about more things. But I just wasn’t feeling very Christmassy.
If you’d listened to today’s podcast you’d know these things Andy. But you’d likely also know more than you might wish to know. I had some pretty graphic gay moments in today’s podcast to be sure. It is a struggle to know just how far I can go. But since I’m a proponent of free speech I figure most of my listeners ears trend on the dirty and less so virginal.
I only got home a little while ago and haven’t had a chance to listen yet.
Consider yourself forewarned.
I received an email from Marc. I think it arrived this morning. He is forever hinting of a return to radio. I wish someone in tonight’s audience would pin him down after the show. Jump him and hold him to the floor until he tells us what’s going on!
If that does not work perhaps pull his shoes off and tickle his feet. He’ll give it up. No one can resist that!
He was doing that during the show last week too! At least it seemed that way.
So you noticed to! Hmm v-e-r-y inter-resting observation Andy! I figure we’ll be hearing something soon from Marc’s mouth! Something less cryptic?
Where’s Fred?
Hey, is Mark subbing for someone??
That’s it!! Vern or Ex has to get an answer from him, or at least try.
Oh, he’s playing at Cobbs tonight in SF. Is that what you’re talking about.
I don’t think so but he was dropping hints last week that there may be a radio gig soon. And now an email.
I’m listening to some of last week now. He sure sounds like he is getting back in. Could be wishful thinking but…
Vern and Ex are going to see him and Nick and I think they should try and get an answer about the radio show he seemed to be hinting at last week.
I don’t know vern, he was “dropping hints” I think every day.

Screw screening for weapons prior to boarding airplanes. I say, screen for health issues. if someone is not healthy, make them wear a mask; if they’re too sick to fly, kick ’em off the plane. Airplanes with sick people are chem-bio flying machines.
Heron, are you not in Seattle? It has been snowing here non-stop so driving back over the two mountain passes doesn’t look like it’s in my future. THE SNOW IS FABULOUS!
Saw The Good Shepherd today. I liked it.
Hope YOU guys are all well.
yes he did drop hints, andy. I’ve been relistening, too, vern. He sounds hopeful. I sure miss hearing him every day.
FarmerKat I am in seattle getting ready to celebrate a friend’s birthday tonight. A friend from Atlanta:pup:!
I will be so sad to miss you again but I understand your reluctance to drive over the mountains. Enjoy the cozy view and your family.
And get well!:cold:
Hey everyone!….Ive been out and about shopping and running errands.Just so exhausted.
Kat, I so hope you dont get that sickness…thats whats going round here (and what Will and I can in Mexico)…its got a vomit component, a cold/lung component and an extreme exhaustion component….
I wouldnt be surprised if the reorganization of AAR involved Marc having a show somehow!
Yesterday while driving round with Will/Ben/Mom we listened to alot of old MS parts, Marc covering for Sam, and clips of war on brains, rapture watch, sammy….it was so great.
That stuff just doesnt get old!
They are talking on CNN about a horrible storm on the west coast that is gonna swirl across most of the country and have tornados and stuff….they are talking about 10-20 inches of rain on the west coast….it seemed to be mor einland in the mountains across california…but they dont seem to know exactly.
I was just sitting in the car outside of radio shack talking to my friend who is also the tree guy who is an outdoorsman and lived his whole life here…and it was so scary…in that hes doing huge jobs with trees and seeing so much change in how everything in the forest is going and the muddiness and warmth….we were lamenting global warming….
How could these asses do this to our world??
I hope to god we get some leadership that will try to reverse this horror.
Yes, my mom in Reno is reporting very windy conditions. Power is flickering.:omg:
scary thing is that they show this swirl across the entire west coast…and then they advance it and it engulfs the entire country except the furthest northeast (in that time frame) and they keep saying h ow very dangerous this is…and it looks like the area with the real dangerous tornados seems to be in the gulf…like N.O……….EEEKKKK!
I guess I’m going to sleep now. Good-night.
greetings Bloggies!!
just wanted to say hi before i lurk for a little bit and catch up with the blog.
:cold:
you know what i love about the end of the year? the marathons!!!
PJ mention the Twilight Zone Marathon, which i will be watching, but i’m loving the marathons of all the Adult Swim shows on Cartoon Network. yesterday i saw the Venture Bros (my favorite show) and in one hour the Boondocks marathon will start….but of course, being the cartoon geek i am, i’m probably the only one interested:smack::paranoid:
Anyhoo….hope everyone is well and keeping warm:cold:
yep, saw ford died. too bad he didn’t put the thugs in jail when he could have – law and order and all that they talk about.
oh, i hope this isn’t what you all had, melina, but i’ll be prepared now if it is….
heron, they’re forcasting more snow here tomorrow . plus, i’d hate to get you and travis sick. i’m putting up a dandy fight, though. some dear college friends just moved to bainbridge and i really wanted to see them, too. ๐
i’m thinking if i kayak on the river tomorrow, that might be the C-U-R-E! ๐ก
Oh, you should go to the Wooden Boat Center and get a row boat or a sail boat. I did it last week, and no one was on Lake Union except for a couple float planes.
Hey, what kind of kayak would you recommend I should get, Farmerkat?
Right, right…I’m off to bed now, like what I said I was going to do before.
Wow the rain here is un-friggin believable.
The streets look like rivers and it just keeps coming down. Worse than last year for sure.
I think everyone should turn off their Xmas lights now!
Hey my friend with the Boxing Day birthday’s mom was James Brown’s banker in Augusta, Georgia. She called him James Williams.
