It’s a big weekend here at the old homestead, as my stepson will be leaving the nest, and moving into an apartment. Tried to get him to take a couple of cats with him, but he’s not going for it. It’s gonna be kinda strange, I must say. Odd for me, and I’ve only been around here for ten years. I can’t imagine how it it’ll be for my wife. I guess she’ll have more time to cater to my every whim, which should be good for her. The bad news is that we have to get him moved, and there are few things in life worse than moving (better him than me, though). Now, I wonder if a pool table will fit in his room?

Suffering from sweet-toothiness? Ben and Jerry’s is rumored to have a new flavour in the works: Stephen Colbert’s “Americone Dream” Ice Cream. Information regarding this latest addition was first leaked to Colbert fan site NoFactZone.net by a random Whole Foods employee, who even went so far as to provide this pic. Official confirmation from Ben & Jerry’s has not been forthcoming, though company spokesperson Sean Greenwood did hint that should such and ice cream exist, it “COULD be a Patriotic mix of strawberry, blueberry and (American not French) vanilla flavors, striped in the pint with chocolate stars…or perhaps Republican Nut, with each pint lovingly sampled by Dick Cheney to insure product quality.” Sound tasty? Have your own ideas about what Truthiness should taste like? Salon is taking suggestions (so far we like “Stephen Colbert’s Big Scoop of Balls”). No word yet on whether the White House Press Association has any plans to serve up some cold Colbert at its next dinner.
There was a hearing on border security on C-span just before WJ came on .. Someplace in Texas the INS put in extra special security at a border crossing which was backing up traffic for miles so the city and the Mexican Government brought out there heavy equipment and build a grade level crossing across the Rio Grande and guarded it with the city police on the US side of the river and the Mexican army on the other.. while the INS fumed and our national guard troops stood around and took pictures :rofl2: :rofl2:

I wonder myself. But we are positive signs so we may “bitch” but we forever work towards an answer — but this is illogical :fustrate: My Head Hurts
I think there is only one answer. For “this second” but for last 30 plus YEARS the rethugs overall and the “twisted” Dems Ruled and voted THEIR WAY. MY WAY: They will no longer be listened to. If the positive Dems … rallied and ACHIEVED ALL GOOD DEMS we could Rule to put things Right. And the rethugs could bitch — but whatever. WE NEVER FILIBUSTERED Trying to Play Fair. The Rethugs did. The Rethugs are just trying TO RULE over All Again! THEY NOW SHOULD LOSE ❗

Yes, Zia is still open for business. Come summer, it may be the only record store open for business in the ASU area. I guess I will have to lift my ban of Zia or drive all the way into Phoenix. 🙁
In the 1960’s a lot of record stores had back rooms which was where the local bands had concerts and a lot of P* got smoked too. The stores also employed a lot of kids after school and were some of the first video outlets ..
The Internet has promoted a new kind of community but having a place where kids and their music could gather was often much more useful and enjoyable

The cable connection on Long Island has the intermittent problem of working for awhile and then not. The last time we called them they made a date to come out but as the cable was working at the moment they checked, they cancelled that appointment.
Last night the cable went out and stayed that way until the cable guy called and said he’d be here in 15 minutes. It chose that moment to start working again.
The cable guy did arrive and changed a line so maybe it is in fact fixed, we shall see.
I worked on a project that used sidebands in the cable TV for communications between a control computer and about 200 remote control units that controlled the switches and block signal lights on the Northeast Corridor.. Many a Contrail freight sat for hours waiting for the cable guy to fix the problem .. We found that if we called them and reported an outage that they would always call back and say they found nothing wrong and the problem almost imeadiately went away .. :reaper: :reaper: Most of the newer cable installations work much better than the conversions from Analog to digital that were made in the early 1980s :omg: AMTRAK who now runs only passenger service over those tracks put in their own fiber optics cables and sells their excess bandwidth to the Internets
Sen. Tim Johnson is reading news clippings and starting to do some office work from the hospital, almost two months after suffering a life-threatening brain hemorrhage. “At this point, he has requested more contact with office and is looking for updates from staff,” his office said in a statement Friday.
Spokeswoman Julianne Fisher said the South Dakota Democrat is starting slowly.
“We do not anticipate him back (in the Senate) for several weeks,” Fisher said. “We are bringing work to him rather than him coming to us. His first priority still is rehabilitation.”

Morning, Druid.
Last week, the CIA sent an urgent report to President Bush’s National Security Council: Iranian authorities had arrested two al-Qaeda operatives traveling through Iran on their way from Pakistan to Iraq. The suspects were caught along a well-worn, if little-noticed, route for militants determined to fight U.S. troops on Iraqi soil, according to a senior intelligence official.
The arrests were presented to Bush’s senior policy advisers as evidence that Iran appears committed to stopping al-Qaeda foot traffic across its borders, the intelligence official said. That assessment comes at a time when the Bush administration, in an effort to push for further U.N. sanctions on the Islamic republic, is preparing to publicly accuse Tehran of cooperating with and harboring al-Qaeda suspects.

Defense bigs ask ’24’ to cool it on torture
The grossly graphic torture scenes in Fox’s highly rated series “24” are encouraging abuses in Iraq, a brigadier general and three top military and FBI interrogators claim.
The four flew to Los Angeles in November to meet with the staff of the show. They said it is hurting efforts to train recruits in effective interrogation techniques and is damaging the image of the U.S. around the world, according The New Yorker.
“I’d like them to stop,” Army Brig. Gen. Patrick Finnegan, dean of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, told the magazine.
Finnegan and others told the show’s creative team that the torture depicted in “24” never works in real life, and by airing such scenes, they’re encouraging military personnel to act illegally.
“People watch the shows, and then walk into the interrogation booths and do the same things they’ve just seen,” said Tony Lagouranis, who was a U.S. Army interrogator in Iraq and attended the meeting.

I assume that the army is saving money by having the troops watch TV instead of engaging in actual training and education. Perhaps they can save enough for another huge tax break for Exon.

Empty nest is a bit of a scary thought.
Using a wireless keyboard – haven’t had time to get the ‘puter fixed (ode to cnick).

Dave Mason album but I’ve got it in a box somewhere in the basement.

Farmerkat, glad you have found a keyboard that has not failed swimming class.
Well, the move has been postponed. I am generally the last to be informed of these things, and this was no exception. No doubt when I am expected to start doing some heavy lifting, they’ll let me know.
So, Druid, you’ve downloaded and installed WinAmp and Shoutcast Server? And the Shoutcast plugin for Winamp? The configuration file is well commented. There isn’t much you need to change, really. Just follow the directions like a cookbook.
Farmerkat your back!! Yay! Now remember, do not feed your computer and swallow before you laugh!
Funny about those bumper stickers. The bumper stickers I saw today were, “piss on liberals”, “I heart haliburtin” (sorry about spelling), “boycott france” Every once in awhile I see a peace sticker… that usually means I’m driving behind my husband.
God, this place really sucks!
Jeez Jenn where do you live? Course I shouldn’t talk, I had a rethug give me the finger while driving by in his escalade.

IT’S A TV SHOW, YOU SHITHEADS. IT’S NOT REAL. JACK BAUER IS A FICTIONAL CHARACTER, NOT AN ACTUAL ROLE MODEL. 😡 😡 😡
Perhaps if these morons ever get out of the army one day, they can join the National Park Service and go after that dangerous bear who keeps stealing picnic baskets. I believe his name is Yogi.
He has been spotted wearing a hat and tie, but no shirt or pants, and is usually accompanied by another small bear named Boo Boo, thought to be his life partner.
You make me laugh, PJ, [Now which Cookbook should I be using :rofl2: ] including this SC info “stuff” 🙄 [ 😮 like I really understand? ] .

aquaman – we’re on the border of Chester and Goshen, NY. My friend from Spain calls the people here, country side folk, with country side minds. (people up here hate her b/c she speaks Spanish I think they think she’s an illegal immigrant.)
The truth is after 9/11 the country side folk saw a lots of us city folk, especially in Warwick, NY. (2 towns away from Chester) A lot of city folk, with their city liberalisms, built these mc-mansions causing the country folk to hate even more then they already do.
I did not move to Warwick, nor did I build a mansion. I bring only my liberalism and wear it proudly. We live in a little home in a little development where I am the only purple fish in a sea of bush loving sea robins.
Next time I move, I’m going to move during an election year so I can check out people’s signs. :peace:

Anthony Weiner, a congressman from Brooklyn, takes on the house GOPers who are continuing to lambaste Pelosi about the plane. (Yes, I know, the story is not true, but they ARE Republicans). He repeatedly calls the Rethugs the Republic Party. Quite funny.
Jenn,
Not only was I right about taking Latin but about moving upstate, as well  .
SueP – no one speaks latin up here!
I was willing to move to Rhode Island :hubba: :slap:

We moms make so many mistakes that we need to enjoy those few times we were right. Lantina bona est. Not living in the midst of a gaggle of dimwit Rethugs ain’t bad either.
I have to admit that having a lovely daughter and granddaughter is the best of all.
what does Lantina bona est mean again? I can’t remember.
oh and mom, you’re right…….
you do have the best daughter and granddaughter.
PJ, you should send the BBC some photos.
Kevin M, this Military move is purely PR. They don’t want the public reminded that they do torture contrary to the laws of the US.
Not to bust in on the mother/daughter lovefest…
but NBC Nightly News just did a piece on the weather in upstate NY. They were showing students at SUNY in Oswego trying to find their cars in a giant snowdrift that was a parking lot at the time the students parked there.
Also several action shots of homeowners shoveling their ROOFS. Back when I lived in Ohio I did my share of shoveling sidewalks and driveways, but I don’t remember ever climbing up to the roof to shovel.
PJ, you have my sympathy. I was thinking about posting the lyrics to the Nick Cave song “Fifteen Feet of Pure White Snow,” but according to NBC there are places where it has drifted up to eight feet, so it sounds like you’re more than halfway there.
Fortunately, my only encounter with frostiness tonight will be :40:

Well, of course they do. It just pisses me off that some people are using a work of fiction as justification for their actions. After I read “Lolita” in college, I didn’t go looking for a 14-year-old girl to have sex with.
Not to mention that these wingnuts conveniently forget that last season, the plot of 24 concerned a corrupt and treasonous president. Or, for that matter, this season Peter MacNicol’s character is urging the president to use the Constitution for asswipe.
Good thing that neither scenario could ever happen in real life.
:tommygun:
Sorry about the poor grammar in the last line of my previous post. The crappy keyboard I’m using won’t allow me to delete characters, even when I go back into the post to edit it. Aaaargh. I need a :40:
Update: I signed onto another PC and fixed the line. Stuff like that drives me up the wall. There’s a radio station in here whose format apparently is the worst songs of the ’70s and ’80s, and I am unable to turn it off or change stations.
Fortunately, the Paul Weller box set arrived in today’s mail, so I can go home and scrub my ears out with it.
Oh, hell all the action is just to the north of us. The lake effect shifted down this way for a few hours yesterday, but all we got was a piddly little eight inches (I feel like I’m missing out on all the fun). Today was a bright sunny day here – while they got dumped on yet again up north. This band has pretty much just shifted up and down a little but for the last week. When you get that much, you can’t even plow it any more, ‘cuz there’s no place to push it. They have to come in with payloaders and haul it out by truck.
If you include a storm that came through Feb 1st, there are places that have gotten 124 inches in a week and a half (that’s not snowdrifts – I’ve seen pictures of dairy barns that were totally buried – but ten feet of actual snowfall, with winds having calmed down to 25 mph). That was as of this morning, and they were supposed to get another foot or more today.
Did I hear correctly that western NYS has been declared a disaster area?
Ah, here’s something that should make commuting to work more dangerous.
re; 68. Just how would you pronounce Uren A1, car computer. Is it a homophone for urine? Does not seem like a great product name to me.
It’s Korean, where it’s probably not such a pissy sounding name.
RAW STORY has received a statement issued on Saturday by House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-MO) in response to articles recently published in the Washington Post and New York Times.
In his statement, Skelton calls for “careful Congressional scrutiny” of adminstration suggestions that Iran may be involved in providing Iraqi insurgents with IED’s for use against US troops. However, he also refers to reports that Iran has been detaining hundreds of al Qaeda operatives and calls for diplomatic engagement, urging that the US adopt “a strategy that extensively engages Iran on these and other issues, while making clear that any contributions to attacks on American forces is unacceptable.”
Rep. Skelton is known as being one of the more conservative Democrats in Congress, as well as being highly attentive to military interests. However, he has also been a skeptic concerning the administration’s lack of planning for the Iraq War. He has recently criticized the “surge” and suggested that the US begin to deploy troops out of Iraq.
I thought jrabnberk said it best!
1) Who came up with the name? Surely they should be shot–or given a gold star for actually convincing the rest of the company.
2) If people can’t drive and talk on a phone, which merely requires talking and no real physical interaction beyond the initial dial/answer, and many states in the US and countries (eg the UK) are making it illegal to drive and talk, why would it be okay to to operate Windows XP?! HELLO?!

I saw that film in the theatre. Great movie!
