Talking about popular bumper music, Talking Heads always seemed to be a fave on MS. Well, Talking Heads head David Byrne was on Steve Earle’s music show last night. I think Earle is a cool enough guy, but of the last 10 minutes of the show that I heard, he kept on droning on about himself and wouldn’t let Byrne get any kind of word in edgewise. How or why do they keep Earle’s show going? Could it be because Earle is the big star of Danny Goldberg’s record label?

The funny thing is, I have his attempted – clearly intended to be annoying – posts, the fact that he’s changed usernames in an attempt to remain anonymous, and the IP addresses he posted from. So, thanks to his hero dubya signing that new trolling law, he’s committing a felony. I could turn this over to the USDOJ, and he could be subject to a huge fine and/or up to two years in a federal prison. Plus, having a felony conviction screws your life up pretty good.
And I bet his mommy would turn his AOL off, too.
Now, I’d just as soon not have to do that. But, as a good citizen, I’m not sure I can look the other way if it continues.

Re: blogging migration, I know there’s a way to migrate from blogger.com to something like WordPress (probably others). It’s not totally automatic and straightforward.
As far as authoring with DreamWeaver or FrontPage, well, that might be tough. You need to be able to have a database. All of these posts and comments go into a database, and are dynamically generated.
For my personal blog, I use blogger.com to publish (it was just easier at the time), and can publish via e-mail should I so desire. I host it on own site, though, and not on blogger. It’s just a matter of setting up the preferences as to where to publish to, and then designing a template.
This blog uses WordPress, which is free and open source. It requires php and MySQL, (most of the open source stuff does) so your host needs to support that. Basic setup is fairly simple, and there are lots of ways to tweak it, if you so desire. There are others out there, of course. Here’s a few URL’s to look at, though I’m sure there are plenty more:

pretty much every truckstop in the country has wifi i have a subscription through flying j truckstops 20 dollars a month for unlimited wifi i can even get wifi in my truck so i dont even have to be in the truckstop but i cant stand just sitting in my truck all the time so i come inside and they have fox news playing go figure

I lived on Parkridge Ave, which was only a couple of blocks from the bars (and wing and taco joints) on Bailey, if you know where that is. I’d reminisce about all the bars I used to go to, but they’re probably long gone (and my memory of those days is a little on the fuzzy side – I guess that had a lot to do with it taking me 26 1/2 years to get my undergrad degree; and to think, now I’m fulltime – and kinda old – grad student).

That was a great speech, by an intelligent human being. I know he says he isn’t running in ’08, but he’s got my vote. What a different world we’d be living in right now if the person who’d won the 2000 election had become president.
I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.
Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.
But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. So we have come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.
In a sense we have come to our nation’s capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.” But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check — a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quick sands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children.
It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment. This sweltering summer of the Negro’s legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.
But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.
We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.
As we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, “When will you be satisfied?” We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality. We can never be satisfied, as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We can never be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.
I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.
Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to South Carolina, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair.
I say to you today, my friends, so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.”
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. With this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with a new meaning, “My country, ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim’s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring.”
And if America is to be a great nation this must become true. So let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire. Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of New York. Let freedom ring from the heightening Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!
Let freedom ring from the snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!
Let freedom ring from the curvaceous slopes of California!
But not only that; let freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!
Let freedom ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!
Let freedom ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi. From every mountainside, let freedom ring.
And when this happens, When we allow freedom to ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, “Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”

I was wondering what the heck she was doing there? she is such a centrist, and the new al is so NOT a centrist. as far as al acknowledging her, I just thought he was following the convention that politicians often follow, of acknowledging other pols in the audience. of course, both he and she know what she said yesterday….
there were a few things that al did say, though, that should have tweaked her conscience (that’s not saying, however, that she would even notice a conscience tweaking). first, he made a point of saying he opposed borkalito. second, he decried the repubs’ threatened nuclear option, and third, he lambasted the congress, including dems, for not taking on this out of control president.
but, god, I hope he doesn’t feel the need to cow tow any more to the soulless dem leadership. my gut tells me that, after all he has been through, he is currently beyond the cowtowing. (God, I hope that would remain true were he to run in 2008. I’m so disillusioned these days that it feels like almost any thing is possible.)

They really should all be ashamed of themselves. Thirty second TV ads, as he said in one one of my favorite lines, are “not the Federalist papers.” The Internet and blogs are the new distribution means for political debate and the dissemination of information.

But in another of King’s important addresses, he faced the depth of our nightmare.

On this day that we mark with his name, all over this country, that speech will be played, as it should be. King articulated — perhaps more eloquently than anyone had to that point — the demand that the United States make good on the American dream, for all its citizens.
But on April 4, 1967, at the Riverside Church in New York City, in a speech titled “Beyond Vietnam,” King spoke just as eloquently of the nightmare that lies underneath that dream. In that speech to Clergy and Laymen Concerned about Vietnam, King not only made a compelling case for ending the U.S. attack on Vietnam, but went beyond that to diagnose a failed society.
On this day that we mark with his name, we owe it to King — and to ourselves — to face that failure honestly. . .

Several people have suggested that big business might leave on its own after it milks the baby boomers out of all their saved up bucks. The 2 billion potential new consumers in China make the US look like a drop in the bucket. They will all just pull out or better yet move their HQ to Beijing then hire American workers just like WalMart hires Chinese workers today.. I’m watching Gore’s speech. He is incredibly articulate but he is kind of boring. It shouldn’t make a difference but I have to wonder if it did for me in 2000. I admit I did not pay attention and just simply voted 3rd party like I always did at that time, but I have to wonder if he would have had the passion I’ve seen him have the last few times, if I would have put more thought into what happened back then:-(

I agree that at times he was boring today. (I would say that hubby slept through about 2/3 of it.) But I felt like, sometimes it’s our civic duty to deal with the boring parts. For me, it seemed an important responsibility in honoring Dr. King’s memory to participate, even passively (ie by listening). Does that make any sense?
I thought Gore was incredibly passionate today; I kept feeling I didn’t even know who this guy was–he was not the Gore I remember.

Well, I don’t think being boring, alone, should keep one from being president. I have a college education so I have experienced many boring lectures and still got a lot out of them. It was a long ass speech though.

I am such a baby. Golly G — I lived in the snow and in different places it got really low, especially with the chill/wind factor. We were going to go to Alaska, but at the Can border I said do I really trust to go up there (in late winter) and do we CA folk really want to endure ALASKA? Eek No! Even the one with back east snow experience said “NO!”!
When we evidentually crossed the CA border I fell to my knees and literally kissed the ground. 😮
(Except I do love the Northern Lights, which I did see in Seatle — although they said it was very seldom the Northern Lights make it down that far. I did a report of the Northern Lights and really wanted to go where they were.):(

The Northern Lights I saw were like green living gas snakes in the sky. Pulsating throughout my very soul. I will NEVER forget that sight. But you see a myriad of the full coloured ones, so beautifully intense.

The lights are pretty cool, but after awhile of standing in the snow that scene gets old. In the summer it’s quite fun to sit and stare with the colorful undulation messin’ with your head and all. But that doesn’t happen all that often because there’s so much sun light. Gaseous snakes is a good description. Someone last summer asked me to explain what the lights look like and I was like,”Um…Like a lake of fire.” He kind of looked at me stange. And then I said, “Or like a stream with ripples of color in it.” I don’t think that description was very good, but whatever. I hate having awkward moments like that that are forever ingrained in your brain. Anyway…
