What with the crappy weather, I got around to watching the pilot (so to speak) episode of Pan Am this morning. I had high hopes – well, moderate hopes, anyway – that it would be a decent show. I mean, who doesn’t love 1963, when cars were made out of metal, skinny women packed themselves into girdles (I think the purpose was to make their beehive hairdos pop out of the tops of their heads), and the USA ruled the skies?
Can’t say as I’m too impressed so far. I thought it would be, well, what’s the word? Interesting. First episode? Not so much. Maybe it’ll get better, though I’m not sure I’ll give it many more chances. Perhaps Suburgatory will be better.
I gave up pretending I give a crap about who’s on the Booblehead shows quite a while back. However, if you’re bored and the weather sucks in your neck of the woods the way it will apparently suck (again) in mine, you might want to kill three hours watching BookTV on CSPAN2 starting at noon (Eastern) today, because Michael Moore will be on.
Then again, maybe you’d prefer to kill time watching football and doing your laundry – ‘cuz you sure as shit aint gonna get the grass cut. Not with all this rain and cold – though they say it’s supposed to get up to 60 today and just be cloudy. So maybe I can cut the grass after all. We’ll see. That reminds me, I need to fill up my diesel cans.
Update on Wall Street Occupation

I have missed the boobleheader but it often made me look so I have much nicer Sundays now. Since I am on such a roll recommending new shows that I’ve never seen, here’s one that I have watched, Up with Chris Hayes on MSNBC weekend mornings. It is on pretty early out here, even for a sometime early riser like me but the online rebroadcasts are available later. I think it ranks with KO and Maddow. It’s is worth a look.
I still haven’t watched Pan Am yet but I did catch the premiere of Suburgatory. It must be hard to lay down the premise for a new sitcom in 20+ minutes, especially if there are a number of characters to introduce so my jury is still out, although I thought Jane was great. I would imagine the next episode will get settled down in the normal pace and feel of the show. I am wondering if the same hold true of Pan Am. It seemed like it took The Wire most of the first season to find its legs although I don’t think either of these series are in that category.
We are approaching the last day of our big free ‘Bluegrass’ festival which has added an almost full program Friday this year for the first time. By now I have a wrecked left knee, a strained hamstring, leg cramps and dizziness list night and achy feet and we like it. I hope I can last today.
Here’s one for the ‘Occupiers’. I looked for Mrs. Miller for the RGs but there were no live versions I could see.

I watched Suburgatory this morning. I think it has a lot of promise. I also like Modern Family (and not just because Julie Bowen is in it – though that’s not a bad reason in and of itself).
I think ABC wants the show to succeed if they are placing it between that Patricia Heaton :fu: show and Modern Family. I haven’t seen enough MF but I like the show and Julie doesn’t hurt. I ran into half of the proud Levy family yesterday it the festival and they said the overnight ratings were great, 10M or almost twice what they were looking for.
btw, Doc Watson isn’t at the festival this year. I always worry a little when he doesn’t make certain events.
I saw “Up with Chris Hayes” Saturday. I thought it was quite good. But, I missed it today.
Oh, does the rightwing botox bag have a new show? I guess I missed it.
Although it occurs to me that if she married Will Wheaton, she’d be Patricia Heaton-Wheaton.
I have a hard time watching anything “newsy” or political these days. I also have to boycott sports – or at least NCAA football. On the bright side, it’s nice to see Buffalo get back to losing. And hopefully Philly will never win another game. Poor Michael Vick – he’s such a victim.
From a story on Bloomberg about Koch Industries illegal activities:
The Senate held hearings in May 1989 after Bill Koch, David Koch’s twin brother, told a U.S. Senate special committee on investigations that Koch Industries was stealing oil on American Indian reservations, cheating the federal government of royalties.
Bill Koch had a long-standing feud with his brothers after his failed attempt to take over the company in the early 1980s. He sold his shares in June 1983 and later lost a lawsuit claiming he’d been shortchanged.
The Senate committee sent investigators to Oklahoma to secretly observe oil companies, including Koch, buying crude on Indian land. The federal agents hid in ditches, crouched behind scrub cedars and ducked behind cows to avoid detection by Koch Oil’s purchasers, FBI agent Richard Elroy testified to the committee in May 1989.
