Thumbing your nose at oil sheiks can cost you in North Carolina.
Bob Teixeira, a Charlotte guitar teacher, took a stand against U.S. dependence on foreign oil last fall and spent $1,200 to convert his 1981 diesel Mercedes to run on vegetable oil. He buys soybean oil in 5-gallon jugs at Costco, which costs him about a third more than diesel.
Despite his good intentions, the state fined Teixeira $1,000 for not paying motor-fuel taxes. North Carolina officials also told him that to legally use veggie oil here, he’d have to first post a $2,500 bond.
Such penalties have also been levied against other North Carolina drivers whose vehicles were powered by alternative fuels.

Bio fuels are a way to energy independence although you would have to use about 70% of the available crop land to grow enough biomass to make as much fuel as we now consume.
Bio fuels still contribute to global warming .
On the plus side Bio fules may produce less NOX than petro fules ..

Court rules against enemy combatant policy
RICHMOND, Va. — The Bush administration cannot use new anti-terrorism laws to keep U.S. residents locked up indefinitely without charging them, a divided federal appeals court said today.
The ruling was a harsh rebuke of one of the central tools the administration believes it has to combat terror.
“To sanction such presidential authority to order the military to seize and indefinitely detain civilians, even if the President calls them ‘enemy combatants,’ would have disastrous consequences for the constitution — and the country,” the court panel said.
In the 2-1 decision, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel found that the federal Military Commissions Act doesn’t strip Ali al-Marri, a legal U.S. resident, of his constitutional rights to challenge his accusers in court. It ruled the government must allow al-Marri to be released from military detention.
The government intends to ask the full 4th Circuit to hear the case, Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — From Texas billionaires to Washington lobbyists, it’s no secret that wealthy people can get federal farm subsidies.
But now, for the first time, new Agriculture Department data makes it easier to see exactly who benefits from the nation’s generous farm subsidy program.
Instead of having to sift through a complex web of corporations, partnerships and other business entities, the USDA has assigned a specific dollar amount to the individuals behind the businesses.
Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, said the new data could affect farm bill negotiations this year as lawmakers consider reducing direct payments to farmers.
“It’s going to be harder than ever before to defend the status quo,” he said. “I think the defenders of big payments, their position is going to be severely weakened.”
