Americans Unready to Revolt, Despite Revolting Conditions
The latest NBC/Wall Street Journal national poll results vividly show a population incredibly dissatisfied with their nation’s political system. In other countries in other times such a depressing level of confidence in government would send a signal to those running the government that a major upheaval is imminent. But not here in the USA. Why?
First, here are the highlights of the poll that surveyed 1,008 adults from June 8-11, with a margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points.
A whopping 68 percent think the country is on the wrong track. Just 19 percent believe the country is headed in the right direction – the lowest number on that question in nearly 15 years. And most of those with the positive view are probably in the Upper Class.
Bush’s approval rating is at just 29 percent, his lowest mark ever in the survey. Only 62 percent of Republicans approve, versus 32 percent who disapprove. Take Republicans out of the picture and a fifth or less of Americans have a positive view of Bush.
Even worse, only 23 percent approve of the job that Congress is doing. So much for that wonderful new Democratic control of Congress. Bipartisan incompetence is alive and well.

The long struggle begins
1. Curl up in fetal position on your left side under bed , insert thumb in mouth.. spend 2 years in this position noting things are getting even worse.. vote democratic in midterm election
2. Curl up in fetal position on you right side under bed , insert thumb in mouth.. spend 2 years in this position noting things are getting even worse. Vote democratic in presidential election
3. Lay on back under bed examining the springs in the box spring, insert thumb in mouth.. spend 2 years in this position ( now under bed at the homeless shelter) noting things are even worse than they were before democrats took over .. vote independent in midterm election
4. Lay on stomach under bed , insert thumb in mouth.. Inhale cats hair ball , discover 2 inches of dust under bed, get emphysema, wish you had universal health care.so you could go to hospital. Don’t vote.

And I love the Long Struggle thing above….
The scary thing about what I was writing about healthcare last night…?…Is that Im in much the same situation as Ben’s Mom except that my grandfather was lucky and smart enough to go rags to riches by workig his entire life…with 3 extra generations behind me from the time when one could make it in America. its still a better chance than Haiti for a kid like Ben, with some luck and hard work…but really, in the healthcare isse, she and I are in the same boat.
So goes the middle class…because the only difference is that I have help for the catastrophic bills just even due to Will’s hospitalization last year or whatever…and a place to live….
But Will and Ben are on the same “wonderful” state children’s healthcare plan…oh wait…no…it turns out that Ben is no longer covered because I can hardly fill out the forms and recertifications for Will every year…you need a PHd to even understand the long directions in how to do it properly and if you do it wrong they dump you…besides that they pay for nothing but the clinic at the hospital and take a year or two to process requests and precertifications at the hospital for surgery and such.
so now Ben is not covered, and Will is covered but only for…well, actually, nothing we’re really using…forget the mental health part. Will’s therapist tried to deal with it for an indigent disabled guy he was helping and after 6 months of wrangling he got back $8.
Now Ive got to help her with the forms for Ben.
Fred and I think it is WebHubbleTelescope that also teases regarding Bill………..Well Who Else? I checked out Cenk a bit — sadly it was at the very end of show — and he had two guest hosts. I liked that, but every other time I check and it is … ๐ฎ Ben. ๐
… Whoelse ? Any suggestions?
This healthcare plan is run by Blue Cross and Blue Shield, so if its bad its because they want it bad ….so no one can figure it out…
and Shays and Lieberman…its their shining star….
and when I stood up at a meeting and told Shays how bad it was, he just denied that it was bad and told me that it must be just me…just me!!…No docitrs in southern CT will take it…none…so poor folks can only go to the hospital when they are half dead….
which might as well be medicare because thats all it is…but privatized, so that BC/BS can manipulate the market and make a profit on it …
Oh, and if you make any money at all above poverty level its really expensive…twice what we used ot pay for private insurance before the big corporate conseco (which is probably bc.bs by another name) bought up all the private insurers in the state and closed them down….
is that legal?
Now theyve passed laws that you cant be deined any private insurance becaus epr preexisting conditions and mental health is covered 80%, but they set customary rates from Arkansas and they set the premiums at the rate of say…um…rent!
I actually tried to get Michael Moore to come here but I dont think that Will’s elective surgery on his legs was compelling enough for sicko…he wanted 9-11 lung disease.
I got another yearly kos update and they have booked most if not all of the democratic contenders…but I guess Cenk is gonna be representing AAR ….I cant imagine who else they’d send….
I sure hope Jill is still going….I need someone to hang and snark with.
Oh well, worse comes to worse, I havent really been to chicago properly and can just walk around…maybe I should apply us for tkts to the oprah show…?
maybe we’d get a new car or something…?
That would be something to blog about!
Is hillary really gonna be able to do this…? Its incredible to think so…
It would be a middle step, I guess…but I dont see alot coming out of it, except that Bill could travel round and try to fix the diplomatic stuff…
When and where ( in Chicago ??) is the Whine and Complain .. err.. Take back America conference this year ?? :rant1:

Don’t forget, if you have no health insurance most hospitals now, as I understand it, will simply put a lien on your house if you have one before they’ll even treat you.
Melina, doesn’t CT. have CHIP?
The odd thing about the paperwork thing and blue cross blue shield, is that when you talk to them on any level you can say “look, Ive dealth with this company for years on many levels, and I know that this is being done this way on purpose,” and no one seems to acknowledge it…not even the operators or the underlings….
even Dell’s techs understand the problems with the company or …like…any big corporation…but bc/bs’s employees act like Im for moutter space….but they do say “oh yes, we have a problem with not enough providers in southern CT” as if its the Dr’s faults….as if the DR’s should take $5 and a full day’s worth of one secretary wrangling the system …only to have every prescription questioned by a panel of “experts” who want to suggest the oldest generic forms of meds….
Its embarassing to seek out the best specialists who might know about the newest treatment for things like pediatric depression and anxiety, and then have their treatments questioned by a panel of…whoever…I think its nurses and some dis-barred doctors….and this is after I have questioned them up and down and gotten other opinions already….Im always apologizing for the insruance industry.
And CT is THE insurance state…or we were….
We have Husky A & B…a groundbreaking children’s universal coverage situation that is really flawed…but chris shays sez it works
I think that Ben’s Mom can get on it too…but Im not sure…Im gonna fill the paperwork with her.
I just wonder what the fucking social worker in her complex is doing.

Chris Matthews on Fred Thompson’s sexiness and smells
Glenn Greenwald
(updated below – updated again)
I’ve written a fair amount recently about the media’s obsession with the faux-masculinity of GOP candidates in general, and the tough-guy military persona of Fred Thompson in particular, and don’t have all that much to add about that specific topic at the moment. Still, this dialogue last night about Fred Thompson from Chris Matthews — who is really just the slightly less restrained id version of most media stars — is simply too extraordinary not to note:
Does [Fred Thompson] have sex appeal? I’m looking at this guy and I’m trying to find out the new order of things, and what works for women and what doesn’t. Does this guy have some sort of thing going for him that I should notice? . . .
Gene, do you think there’s a sex appeal for this guy, this sort of mature, older man, you know? He looks sort of seasoned and in charge of himself. What is this appeal? Because I keep star quality. You were throwing the word out, shining star, Ana Marie, before I checked you on it. . . .
Can you smell the English leather on this guy, the Aqua Velva, the sort of mature man’s shaving cream, or whatever, you know, after he shaved? Do you smell that sort of — a little bit of cigar smoke? You know, whatever.
What can even be said about that? And nobody really seems to find this odd or disturbing or objectionable at all — that night after night, one of the featured “journalists” of a major news network goes on television and, with some of our most prestigious journalists assembled with him, speaks admiringly about the smells and arousing masculinity and the “daddy” qualities of various political officials, and that this metric is, more or less, the full extent of his political analysis.

That is why I thought General Clark’s response to Joe Lieberman’s obscenely casual call for war with Iran was so appropriate and piercing:
Only someone who never wore the uniform or thought seriously about national security would make threats at this point.
Clark there was not making a standard “chickenhawk” argument that only those who served in the military can advocate for war. Rather, Clark was pointing out that those for whom “war” is but an abstract concept, a psychological device for feeling “strong” and “resolute,” are able to cheer wars on from a safe distance even in the most reckless and destructive way.
Recall the illustrative incident conveyed by Jeffrey Goldberg in his New Yorker profile of Lieberman from several months ago:
Lieberman likes expressions of American power. A few years ago, I was in a movie theatre in Washington when I noticed Lieberman and his wife, Hadassah, a few seats down. The film was “Behind Enemy Lines,” in which Owen Wilson plays a U.S. pilot shot down in Bosnia. Whenever the American military scored an onscreen hit, Lieberman pumped his fist and said, “Yeah!” and “All right!”
In light of Lieberman’s call this weekend for war with Iran, that incident is actually grotesque, as it is painfully clear that Lieberman sees those bombs he wants dropped on countless Iranians as indistinguishable from the “onscreen hits” he so clumsily and embarrassingly cheered on — as invigorating and stimulating events which establish the “American power” that he so loves and craves.
King Kong, :rofl2: I am a dichotomy regarding that :smack: ๐ … I know I am not suppose to like “the journey” , but I do (giggle) :dancers: … BUT isn’t One suppose to enjoy “the journey” (snicker) :yippee: to no longer moving ๐

The new place has a lot of nice features that the old one didn’t have, especially in the kitchen, so I guess now I get to resume actual cooking as opposed to the microwave. It’s also a LOT cleaner and free of all the crap I had been keeping in the old place for no apparent reason.

Well, the desktop is running w/ new motherboard etc…, the laptop is running w/ new verizoncard reader, the cable had blown on the pole due to storms, the verizon card needed new drivers via wifi…AND for a moment, things are downright peppy!! Makes me want to surf the internets!
What a day!
But it appears that I could be a level 2 or 3 tech at Verizontech, and I definitly know more than the cablevision onsite tech…the Dell outsourced tech was better than me, but Ive never opened up one of these big inspirons…was told not to.
But I was right that the card reader was unplugged from the motherboard!…He replaced it anyway…but it was nice to be right.
And I figured out a better design for laptop motherboards during all of this…but Im ๐ not telling till I patent it.
y’know, I just want the same insurance that the congress and senate have…or Medicare…extended to everyone…and all Dr’s HAVE to take it at the set rates not matter what. …But the set rates have to be a little higher than they are in places where customary is higher…and providers who serve the poor should be somehow subsidized by the govt…
But the important thing is that poor people could get it for free and rich people would pay in…single payer…
Melina, I have not seen what John Boy’s health care proposals were today but I totally agree that we need to get to the single payer Medicare style ground floor safety net for all. If individuals or employers wish to avail themselves of enhanced care with mo’ money, so be it. No one will be stopping them.
Of course the insurance and medical industries and big pharma will fight it like hell, and of course those who are doing their damnedest to discredit gubment are building their case very well as well. We will sooner see them :tommygun: than the public :sheep: . It is going to take a while of actually putting competent people in place to administer effective programs to turn around the well calculated and executed assault on ‘perceptions’ and the m$m portrayal of government and programs.
Health care amongst so many other things has to be removed from the profit arena.
I have a tropical garden under the stair well too. At least I think dandelions and thorns are semitropical plants. ๐ฎ
Big medicine whether it be in the form of the AMA ,private hospitals , insurance companies fights by paying off your congress people .. Remember sociopaths hate loud noises.. ๐ฎ ๐ฏ
I think that the plans that will set Medicare for all who do not have other health plans can be a first step to a single payer system. No one of ‘means’ has ever been denied their opportunity to wield their wealth to attain higher levels of care.

You know, the story of the woman dying on the ER floor doesn’t surprise me at all. I had to go to the ER last year and I was feeling so horrible I couldn’t sit up in a chair so I was on the floor, writhing. There was no one in the waiting room at all and they made me wait forever. And then one of the receptionists asked me in a very annoyed voice to get up off the floor. They were horrible people. :fu:
I went to the emergency room recently in extreme pain and pretty much ignored and had to wait in line. It turned out to be kidney stones, which hurt like the dickens but not really that dangerous health-wise.
So my theory is that the hospital staff assumes everyone that comes in has kidney stones.
