Crap. Winter decided to come back this morning. It’s not a ton of snow, but it’s cold (17 at my house when I got up) and windy. This is when winter becomes a pain in the ass: you get a taste of warm weather and you start thinking about all the things you should be doing outside, and then, bam! It gets cold again. At least at this time of year you know it won’t last long.
With my mind definitely turning to thoughts of warmer weather, I got bearings and a seal to rebuild my pool pump, which was getting awfully loud by the end of the season last year. I’d hoped to get a new solar cover since the one I have is getting kind of ratty, but we’ll have to see about that. Money is getting ever scarcer, and I need to blow a bunch of it to contain the varmints in the back yard, now that they snow the old wooden snow fence is more or less useless.
You may have heard there’s a bit of a standoff in nearby Herkimer, NY (it’s about an hour or so east of Syracuse). Some bozo has shot 6 people so far, and four of them are dead. Now he’s holed up in an abandoned building. The paper reports that this has brought “downtown” Herkimer to a standstill, which, if you’ve ever been to Herkimer (which you probably haven’t) is kinda funny, ‘cuz I’m kinda wondering how you could tell the difference.
They have pictures of people that look like military, but I assume are some kinda cops, hanging out with serious looking weapons. The odd thing it, they’re wearing camouflage uniforms. I mean, Herkimer is small, but there are building and shit. I don’t think the camo is fooling anybody.
Governor Snotball was on the scene for who knows what purpose, other than to get his face on the teevee. I’m glad he got an opportunity to knock the Pope out of the news for a few minutes.
Oh well, back to work.
Suspect shot dead in upstate New York police standoff
From streaming cable news yesterday you might have begun to think that the catholics controlled the media. I saw some shows that could have been CatholicTV. Thankfully yesterday during all the poopla, Sgt. Schultz had a major get, an interview with the bartender who shot the 47% speech by Mittens. They were promoting it heavily and the repetition of Fat Heddie being interviewed on almost every show was was almost as bad. It was a good interview and I recommend it. One of the best parts was at the end when he announced that his last weekday show would air tonight and in April he would be doing a two hour show an Saturdays and Sundays. That to me is don’t need to see TV. Besides, I have enough of my weekends chewed up trying to watch Chris Hayes and Melissa Harris-Perry 4 hours each morning. Then even better news came when I got up this morning. However, if they give that weekend slot to Alex Wagner, I am fooked. :hubba:
Chris Hayes to Take Over 8 P.M. Slot on MSNBC
 :yippee:
Unfortunately, today the CPAC conference begins and coverage of the cons will likely be filling a lot of time. The lineup is full of con douchebaggery and excludes some of the more ‘sensible’ repugs. It could be a good laundry day.
:barf:
The fuckers sent the dog in first to get shot. Bastards.
Pi time!
Note, though the post time doesn’t show seconds, I posted that comment on 3/14 at 1:59:27.
Herkimer, NY– The trained FBI dog killed during a standoff in Herkimer Thursday between a gunman and police had been on the job less than a month.
The tactical K-9, named ‘Ape,’ was accompanying FBI agents who with state police raided an abandoned bar in the village of Herkimer, Ann Todd, an FBI spokeswoman, said.
The Czech German shepherd was just two years old, and had begun serving with the FBI on Feb. 25 after successfully completing training in October 2012, Todd said.
Police say the man inside, Kurt Myers, shot six people after he set his apartment on fire Wednesday morning. Four people were killed in the shootings, and two more were injured.
Myers holed up in the abandoned bar and police soon surrounded the building and a tense 15-hour standoff began. The police raid began just before 8 a.m. Thursday and was over in minutes.
Myers shot Ape, who was sent in with a camera, and also fired through a doorway at the FBI and state police as they entered the building. They fired back and killed Myers.
The wounded dog was rushed to a waiting armored vehicle and driven to a veterinarian at the scene, but died a short time later.
Todd called Ape’s actions heroic, and said the dog saved FBI agents and state police from being wounded or killed. K-9s are a tremendous asset in tactical operations, she said, and help keep law enforcement who confront complex and high-risk threats safe.
Ape will be returned home to Quantico, Va., Todd said, where a memorial will be held and his name will be added to a memorial wall.
RIP, Ape. :gate:
For the most part, I really don’t like humans (present company excepted, of course).
Ditto about humans 😥 . RIP, Ape :pup: :gate:
Why the hell did they send that poor unsuspecting dog in there on a suicide mission??! What did they think would happen, the dude would pet the dog? What a waste.
Beautiful dog, very unattractive people!
