So, back to work today. I’m really not up for it. I’m also not up to spend the next 11 months listening to all this election crap. I don’t know how things will turn out in Iowa tomorrow, but I have a feeling I’ll wind up having to vote for somebody I don’t really care for in November. And even if I actually like who I vote for, they probably won’t be able to actually accomplish anything once they get in. And that’s only if this asshole that talks to god doesn’t manage to blow up the world in the meantime. Oh well, let’s get this over with.

We’re in the 30s today with wind-chill factor. Supposed to be colder tomorrow. I know I’m not getting any sympathy from most of you, but we’re not used to it here. At least Santa brought gloves and a warm coat for Christmas.

re that projector gadget
and they thought the laser pointer was a problem.
Most projectors are the size they are because of the size of the projection lamps getting rid of the the heat they produce and to house the power supply to provide the power they require.. That thing would be ok to show your baby pictures to your relatives at 9 pm in their totally dark living room but wouldn’t produce a picture you could even see in a conference room at 10 am with venetian blinds for shades
:reaper: :reaper:
Fred, re 10 ….. :rofl2: A!I!V!
:rofl2: A!I!V!
Thank gawd for that, fred. I’d hate to see vigilance squads armed with projectors attempting a drive-in revolution.
:tommygun:
Well, I obviously don’t know how well it’ll work, but according to their press release, it’s a laser projector, so it should be brighter and use less power (and therefore generate less heat). We shall see, I guess.
Hard to say it’s great or that it sucks before it even comes out, but since it wasn’t that long ago that a 50 meg hard drive was top of the line (not to mention huge), and I now have a 2 gig microSD card that’s about the size of my pinkie fingernail, I don’t think I’d poo-poo it just yet.
A laser pointer is a lot different than a laser projector.. The pointer puts all the energy in a small area .. once you start rastering the beam the amount of energy put on the screen at any one point goes down by the number of pixels you are projecting and the scan rate.
That sounds like some business putting forth a business plan directed to the not very technical savy investor. :tap: :tap:
Remember that that microSD card will crap out after you write to it about 200,000 times… The hard disk after about 3 trillion times or 70,000 hours which ever come first. :tap: :tap:
Also, man will never fly.
The way the airline industry is going that first observation may again be true.. All it will take is someone in the middle east turning off those valves and we will all be walking.. I don’t think batteries have the energy density ( yet) to make an electric airplane. :tap: :tap:
Is it tomorrow that the IDIOT MORONS in Iowa will begin the decision making process as to what IDIOT MORON we will be getting to vote for in November ??
So, Kevin, 30’s can’t be your high temp. Remember to cover your plants! :cold:
Damn, been getting colder all day. It was 18 when I got up this morning, 15 when I left for work, and 11 now.
Now it’s down to 9.
That booger freezing cold, PJ. :cold:

Ausra to Build World’s Largest Solar-Thermal Factoryy
But by replacing hand-built troughs with tractor-truck-sized modules that can be made on a
production line and dropped into place with a forklift, Ausra claims its technology can cut solar-thermal costs to 10.4 cents per kilowatt-hour, from an estimated 16 to 18 cents per kilowatt-hour, right away and to 7.9 cents per kilowatt-hour — less than the cost of coal-fired power — in three years.
The company, which was founded more than seven years ago as Solar Heat and Power, was reborn as Ausra last year and came out of stealth mode in September. With new executives, $40 million in venture-capital funding and contracts with Pacific Gas & Electric Co. and Florida Light & Power in hand, O’Donnell said the company is now taking its first massive step in executing its business plan.
Hey Sean, I played the demo a couple of times, but all I did was get killed in about 2 seconds.
It was back to work today an neither teachers nor kids were up for it. But, it was nice to see them, anyway. We did our best.

A Galaxy is not a Comet
Credit & Copyright: Emiel Kempen
Explanation: This gorgeous galaxy and comet portrait was recorded on December 30th, in the skies over Hoogeveen, The Netherlands. The combined series of 60 x 60 second exposures finds the lovely green coma of Comet 8P/Tuttle near its predicted conjunction with the Triangulum Galaxy. Aligning each exposure with the stars shows the comet as a streak, slowly moving against the background stars and galaxy. An alternative composition with exposures centered on the comet, shows the background stars and galaxy as streaks. The alluring celestial scene would also have been a rewarding one for the influential 18th century comet hunter Charles Messier. While Messier scanned French skies for comets, he carefully cataloged positions of things which were fuzzy and comet-like in appearance but did not move against the background stars and so were definitely not comets. The Triangulum Galaxy, also known as M33, is the 33rd object in his famous not-a-comet catalog. The modern understanding holds that the Triangulum Galaxy is a large spiral galaxy some 3 million light-years distant. Comet 8P/Tuttle, just bright enough to be visible to the unaided eye in dark, northern skies, is about 40 million kilometers (2 light-minutes) away.

Thanks, Sue. I was nauseous already (from lunch, I think), but that video clinched it. :barf:
So, for the hell of it, I was checking out the write endurance of flash memory, and if you can “only” read/write to it 100,000 times (and they actually do a lot better than that these days using write leveling; between 500,000 and 5 million times), that means you could rewrite an entire card 10 times a day for about 27 years. At which point, I will have long since lost it. And odds are, I’ll be dead, anyway.
Mayor Giuliani will announce a new four-point war strategy in New Hampshire today, an effort to refocus a primary campaign season for Republicans that has centered in recent weeks less on foreign affairs and more on immigration and domestic issues.
Specifically, Mr. Giuliani will call for a new military surge in Afghanistan, a change in the way America’s spies are promoted so that officers are rewarded for finding actionable intelligence and not just the number of agents they recruit, and a new war on Al Qaeda’s intricate network of Web sites, sites used both to communicate with its agents in the field and to recruit new jihadis.

Who Do We Vote For This Time Around? A Letter from Michael Moore.
If I lived in Iowa I would vote for Edwards. I admit that it would be a wonderful thing to have a woman president. I’d love to be able to say to my granddaughter, “You can grow up to be president.” And, if Hillary is the nominee, I will vote for her.
Obama just doesn’t have enough depth for me. He’s been slick too, voting present on controversial issues in his state senate. Maybe someday he’ll make a great and charismatic president, but not yet.
Edwards takes positions that are closest to mine. I love his support for labor. I think he’s a decent guy. I worry that the Rethugs will shred him, but he is a lawyer and perhaps he really does know how to stick up for himself.
Iraq’s government released statistics on the number of civilians and security force members it said were killed in 2007.
According to figures released Monday by the Iraqi government, 16,232 civilians, 432 soldiers and about 1,300 Iraqi policeman died in 2007. The previous year, according to the figures compiled by the health, defense and interior ministries, 12,371 civilians, 603 soldiers and 1,224 policeman were killed.
The government’s figures were roughly in line with a count kept by The Associated Press, which found that 18,610 Iraqis were killed in 2007. In 2006, the only other full year an AP count has been tallied, 13,813 died.
For December 2006, the count found that 2,309 people were killed compared to about 700 last month. Last January was equally blood-soaked with 1,908 deaths.

Forgive me, but I am confused US military deaths were up in 2007 and Iraqi civilian death were up in 2007 but violence is down? I must be missing something.
What Sue said. For that matter, what Michael Moore said. Oh, to be in Cedar Rapids, now that winter is here.
Not to mention here. Tampa is supposed to get down to 29 degrees tonight. We won’t be quite as cold since the Gulf is like a bathtub due to it being warm for so long, but unfortunately I can’t swim to work in the Gulf.
My cute blonde neighbor has blankets over all her outside plants. I hope she doesn’t get cold without a blanket for herself. Maybe I should offer her part of mine. :hubba:
To completely change the subject, did anyone else catch the little slapfight between Kucinich and Thom Hartmann on today’s show? I know Dennis thought Thom was slighting him, but it still didn’t seem very presidential.
I’ll have to catch the Hartman podcast tomorrow. Have to say, I’m a bit disappointed in DK for telling his supporters to go for Obama as #2 in Iowa. I read some speculation that it was payback for Edwards “stealing” support from him. Kind of a shame. If Dennis is the most progressive candidate out there (and I reckon he is), Obama certainly isn’t #2. And speechifying against Iraq from the Illinois State Senate while repeatedly voting to fund it from the US Senate doesn’t cut it for me. Obama and Clinton look and sound pretty much the same to me. And to Ralph Nader, too, I guess – for whatever that’s worth (which aint much).
I was just now tuning in to hear DK on the Th  m show.
Can Huckabee be anymore clueless?
What say ye regarding Jeff? ….. :tap: A!I!V!
I’m gonna go with, “no.” But he could still surprise me.
Snorting a Brain Chemical Could Replace Sleep
In what sounds like a dream for millions of tired coffee drinkers, Darpa-funded scientists might have found a drug that will eliminate sleepiness.
A nasal spray containing a naturally occurring brain hormone called orexin A reversed the effects of sleep deprivation in monkeys, allowing them to perform like well-rested monkeys on cognitive tests. The discovery’s first application will probably be in treatment of the severe sleep disorder narcolepsy.
Wow, lots to catch up on on the blog today —

Blasting, billowing, bursting forth
With the power of ten billion butterfly sneezes
Man with his flaming pyre
Has conquered the wayward breezes
Climbing to tranquility
Far above the cloud
Conceiving the heavens
Clear of misty shroud
Higher and higher
Now we’ve learned to play with fire
Go higher and higher and higher
Vast vision must improve our sight
Perhaps at last we’ll see and end
To our own endless blight
And the beginning of the free
Climb to tranquility
Finding it’s real worth
Conceiving the heavens
Florishing on earth
Higher and higher
Now we’ve learned to play with fire
Go higher and higher and higher
I’m just a wandering on the face of this earth
Meeting so many people
Who are trying to be free
And while I’m traveling I hear so many words
Language barriers broken
Now we’ve found the key
And if you want the wind of change
To blow about you
And you’re the only other person to know, don’t tell me
I’m just a singer in a rock and roll band.
A thousand pictures can be drawn from one word
Only who is the artist
We got to agree
A thousand miles can lead so many ways
Just to know who is driving
What a help it would be
So if you want this world of yours
To turn about you
And you can see exactly what to do
Please tell me
I’m just a singer in a rock and roll band.
How can we understand
Riots by the people for the people
Who are only destroying themselves
And when you see a frightened
Person who is frightened by the
People who are scorching this earth.
I’m just a wandering on the face of this earth
Meeting so many people
Who are trying to be free
And while I’m traveling I hear so many words
Language barriers broken
Now we’ve found the key
And if you want the wind of change
To blow about you
And you’re the only other person to know, don’t tell me
I’m just a singer in a rock and roll band.
How can we understand
Riots by the people for the people
Who are only destroying themselves
And when you see a frightened
Person who is frightened by the
People who are scorching this earth.
Music is the traveller crossing our world
Meeting so many people bridging the seas
I’m just a singer in a rock and roll band.
We’re just the singers in a rock and roll band.
I’m just a singer in a rock and roll band…

Why do we never get an answer
When we’re knocking at the door
With a thousand million questions
About hate and death and war?
‘Cos when we stop and look around us,
There is nothing that we need,
In a world of persecution
That is burning in its greed.
Why do we never get an answer
When we’re knocking at the door
Because the truth is hard to swallow
That’s what the war of love is for
It’s not the way that you say it
When you do those things to me
It’s more the way that you mean it
When you tell me what will be
And when you stop and think about it
You won’t believe it’s true
That all the love you’ve been giving
Has all been meant for you.
I’m looking for someone to change my life,
I’m looking for a miracle in my life
And if you could see what it’s done to me,
To lose the love I knew
Could safely lead me through.
Between the silence of the mountains,
And the crashing of the sea,
There lies a land I once lived in,
And she’s waiting there for me,
But in the grey of the morning,
My mind becomes confused,
Between the dead and the sleeping,
And the road that I must choose.
I’m looking for someone to change my life,
I’m looking for a miracle in my life
And if you could see what it’s done to me,
To lose the love I knew,
Could safely lead me to
The land that I once knew,
To learn as we grow old
The secrets of our soul.
It’s not the way that you say it
When you do those things to me
It’s more the way you really mean it
When you tell me what will be
Why do we never get an answer
When we’re knocking at the door
With a thousand million questions
About hate and death and war?
‘Cos when we stop and look around us,
There is nothing that we need,
In a world of persecution
That is burning in its greed.

Ride, take a free ride,
Take my place
Have my seat
Its for free.
I worked like a slave for years,
Sweat so hard just to end my fears.
Not to end my life a poor man,
But by now, I know I should have run.
Run, run my last race,
Take my place
Have this number
Of mine.
Run, run like a fire,
Dont you run in
In the lanes
Run for time.
Left school with a first class pass,
Started work but as second class.
School taught one and one is two.
But right now, that answer just aint true.
Ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah ah
Ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah, ah ah ah ah ah
My world is spinning around,
Everything is lost that I found.
People run, come ride with me,
Lets find another place thats free.
Ride, ride my see-saw,
Take this place
On this trip
Just for me.
Ride, take a free ride,
Take my place
Have my seat
Its for free.
Ride, my see-saw.
Ride, ride, ride, my see-saw.

#43 — KP — Oh, good grief — DARPA funded study — fucking DARPA??? They are so totally X-Files — that episode about the sleep deprived soldier who was a homicidal maniac comes to mind.
Part of the reason I hate being in the medical field is the arrogant attitude that drugs can fix anything and the drug companies will always come up with another :fu: ing wonderful :fu: ing drug to fix whatever the “problem” is.
It is REALLY scary. Sleep deprivation is serious shit that causes serious psychoses. Now they are developing drugs to counteract sleep deprivation — holy :crap:
Antihistamines and antibiotics, innocent as they sound can cause people to see bugs crawling on the ceiling or into their eye sockets — I speak from directly witnessing reports from people under the influence in hospital settings.
OY :pent:
I really don’t like Amerika :reaper:
I know RG, man against nature, a central theme in this world that is unnecessary. Just get enough sleep, eat right and move around and you can avoid being enslaved by the pharmeceuticals for the most part. We don’t need to fight natures rythms and we shouldn’t, in our every day lives.

The little bit of Heartman I caught today had him concerned about Dennis throwing his support on the second ballot to Obama because Obama had almost as many corporate campaign givers and lobbyists in his campaign as Hillary did.
Like I said before you can’t go by what they say look at where their money comes from. Edwards seems like the way to go but the IDIOT MORONS only see the glitter not the weeds. :reaper: :reaper:
DARPA is the provider of funds for some 90% or more of all the R&D performed in the SBR.. They brought you the internet, cell phones, GPS and WIFI among many other things.. Their SBIR programs ( Small Business Incentive Research) grants have launched many a small business The interesting part of DARPA grants is that even though it is public finance you can still apply for a patent on any unique things you develop…. :tap: :tap:
