Happy September, everybody. And welcome to the earliest possible Labor Day. If you’ve been holding off on going to the NYS Fair (and I suspect you have), today’s the day to get out there, as it’s $1 admission and $1 rides all day. Plus you get to see the Labor Day Parade and if you feel like hanging around ’til sis o’clock you can even see the Doobie Brothers (which at least still includes Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons from the olden days, and blessedly doesn’t include Michael McDonald – no offense, Mike, just was never into the “What a Fool Believes” or “Takin’ it to the Streets” shit. I’m more of a “Black Water” – the song, not the mercenary company – guy).
I saw the Doobie Brothers on my last night home before leaving for college back about 36 years ago. With MM, I’m afraid, but also with Skunk Baxter, who at one point came out of a jam playing his riff from Stealin’ in the Years. I went with my best buddy Rich, and I recall feeling very emotional at the end of the night when we went our separate ways for what would be the last time as “high school kids” (this may have been at least partly due to the copious amounts of Mad Dog, Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill, and dope we consumed that evening).
Now I’m perfectly straight and feel highly emotional thinking about the fact that damn near 40 years have slipped by with my barely noticing (having squandered a vast majority of both the time and the potential I once rather narcissistically thought I had). I still hear from Rich now and again, mostly to have him tell me we should get together and for me to say, “yep, whenever you want, man,” and then another two or five or seven years go by before I hear the same thing again. There was a time when that bugged me, but that time has long since passed. Now, if I feel anything at all (apart from headache, heartburn, and nausea the past week or so), it’s mostly apathy.
Yesterday was kind of rainy and muggy, and since I still don’t feel that great, about all I did was read, nap, watch some “Every. Simpsons. Ever.” and then some Breaking Bad Binge. A pretty wasted weekend, and now I have to think about going back to work tomorrow. Which mostly means I need to do some laundry and maybe go get gas and groceries. But I’m really not feeling the whole gas and groceries thing, so hopefully I’ve got enough of both to make it through four days of work.
Anywho, if you’ve got the day off toss some veggie burgers and non-GMO corn-on-the-cob on the grill or go to the beach and toss the Buzzbee around or knock back a few cold ones (have a few for me – been a bit off my feed lately) and bid a fine adieu to the Summer of ’14. Here’s hoping we have a long, warm, and snow-free Autumn. And if SU could win a few football games, that’d be cool, too.
Although recent citations are not on the Googles and not meaning to harsh the mellow, Skunk has been something of a repug supporter and worker in the military-industrial-security complex in latter years. Good guitarist though.
I find MMcD a good reason to avoid anything he touches.
Oh well. I guess they don’t call him Skunk for nothin’. Maybe he can get a band going with Ted Nugent, Charlie Daniels, and Alice Cooper.
I was told that the Farmers Almanac has predicted a cold snowy winter for the northeast. They were accurate about last winter but their summer prediction, hot and wet, only got the wet right. We had a really cool spring and a pretty cool summer. There was only one day above 90.
I think we picked up your 90+ days, sp. I’m ready for fall. Now.
I saw an all-black Woolly Bear yesterday. This does not bode well for the coming winter.
No wonder UCSC had Universal Frisbee Teams.
Somebody at my dorm had one of those. It was a great deal of fun. I only wish I’d thought to get (and keep) one for myself. This guy wanted $150 for one on e-Bay! Really should come with a full bowl for that kind money.
Try this one.
Ah, talk about the sad state of my personal life. I’ve got nothing to fill my Frisbee with, and nobody to toss it to.
Thank you, Obama! Tomorrow I am having a physical. Who knows what hilarity will ensue?
Meanwhile I have wasted way to much time getting together my move so it is crunch time. Today I have been going through boxes and poxes fo paper records ripping and shredding. That’s one good way to remember what happened except I am eliminating the evidence (save the last seven years).

I have no clue how to size these things and pics anymore.
Well, here’s what I do:
Looks like I spoke too soon. It’s not 90 but it’s muggy. Very muggy. My glasses fog up as soon as I get out of the car. I hope this passes soon.
Pretty icky-humid here today, too. Getting some rain now, not supposed to be as hot and humid tomorrow but back up to 90 on Friday.
The cool weather and rain are headed our way tonight!!!
I saw Zephyr Teachout on Up. I am going to feel very good about voting for her on Tuesday
Yeah, I wish I was a registered Demcrat and could vote for her. All I can do is give her money and hope I get to vote for her in November, which wouldn’t be a problem if the Working Families Party hadn’t stabbed working people in the back and endorsed Snotty. Bastards.
We need open primaries in NY. Among other things.
If we had open primaries, Republicans would be able to vote in Dem preimaries and make it much harder for liberals to push the party to the left. I’m annoyed with whimpy WFP, put political calculations are always there. Bill De Blasio, always a liberal but always aware of political realities, has endorsed Hochul (sp?) a Cuomo pick. I hope he promised DeBlasio something worth it in return.
Would open primaries make it harder for conservatives to push the Republican party to the right?
Assuming there isn’t some miracle with Teachout, the general election is going to basically be the Republican primary for governor. I don’t think the current system is exactly pushing the Democrats to the left. Not in NY, and not in national politics.
I should be able to vote in whatever primary I want. And the WFP had a great opportunity this year, and they blew it. And De Blasio is another typical coward. Or maybe I missed the part where he came out strongly against the NYPD strangling an unarmed Eric Garner to death?
Of course, there are always political “realities” to consider.
The mayor of Syracuse called Cuomo out and she’s paying the political price for it (granted, she’s only the mayor of a hick town upstate that isn’t exactly very important), but I’m proud of her.
Also, don’t forget that Lt. Guv is a separate primary in NY. I’d love for Snotty to have to run with Wu – while Wu tells everybody what an asshole snotty is. It’s the 2nd best scenario.
I think the NY Dems are moving left. We had Mike Bloomberg and Giuliani as mayors. Now we have DeBlasio who is a real lefty. But, he has always beeen practical and always picked his fights. There is an investigation of the Garner murder. He has supported it. He has kept the city calm. He has not supported the cops but said that the process has to happen. Giuliani and Bloomberg would have supported the cops and accused black NYers. The NY Post (a horrible rightwing rag that is widely read in the city) is busy screaming that DeBlasio is waging “a war on the police.” Asking DeBlasio to say that Garner was clearly murdered and the cops should be charged is asking him to become less effective and probably a one term mayor.
Politics are horrible. I could never do it. I haven’t got the self control or even the desire to have that self control. But, I hope people like DeBlasio do because NY under DeBlasio is a lot better than it was under Rudy. There ain’t no Utopia.
Well, there’s NYC and then there’s NYS. NYC is supposed to be a bastion for godless liberals, so I don’t know what you guys were thinking when you elected Ghouliani and then Bloomie. I suppose you could say that was a shift to the left, though neither of them were Democrats.
Governor Andy is tight with the Republican County Executive here, and shung the Democratic Mayor. He forged an alliance to keep Republicans in control of the NYS Senate beacuse he isn’t a Democrat. And the WFP had no reason to endorse him.
No, there’s no perfect world. But do I have to be OK that our Democrats are Republicans and our Republicans are venemous, insane creatures to the right of Lyndon Larouche?
Be careful what you wish for…
