For the most part, it’s been a pretty mild winter here in the Great White North, so we were cautiously optimistic that the weather would be decent when my stepdaughter and the grandkids came to visit. So of course they flew in on the coldest Valentine’s Day in history, with the official temp hitting -23 (and colder out our way). It finally warmed up a bit yesterday, at which point we were blasted by freezing rain up until the rain turned to snow. I plowed about 5 inches of slush out of the driveway in the morning, and another 6 inches or so of snow in the evening. It was fortunate I didn’t have to go anywhere, because the commute both ways would have been a real mess.
On the bright side, my new brew toy showed up yesterday. It’s called the GrainFather, and it’s a sorta all-in-one electric mash, sparge, and boil pot (plus a built-in pump for recirculating and transferring the wort, and a nifty counter flow wort chiller). I’ve been using a big-ass propane burner to brew in my basement, which you’re not supposed to do (something to do with carbon monoxide poisoning or something). I have bulkhead doors to my basement, so I’ve been opening them up and putting a box fan on the steps to draw fresh air in and I haven’t died yet. Still, it’s kind of a hassle (and you have to keep going out and buying propane), so I started looking at going electric.
Besides hopefully not succumbing to CO poisoning, it has the advantage of being able to dial up the correct temperature for whatever it is you’re doing. I won’t bore you with the details, but basically you let the milled grain sit in hot water for a while to extract the sugar from it. Depending on the temperature, you can get a dry beer or at a slightly higher temp, a sweeter beer (because the higher temp creates non-fermentable sugars). Too hot, and you extract tannins from the grain husks and you get less-than desirable flavors.
And of course there are multiple-step mashing techniques where you take it to one temp for a while, then increase it, etc. After you’re done mashing, you can do a “mash out” where you bring the temp up for a while in order to stop the enzyme action that’s going on, and then you drain the sugary water mixture out and then you run more hot water over the grain in order to flush out any leftover sugar. The sugar/water mix is called wort, which you then boil, add hops and whatever else you want to toss in there along the way and when it’s done boiling you cool it off, transfer it to your fermenter and add yeast.
And then of course your little yeasties eat the sugar, fart CO2 and (most importantly) pee alcohol.
So, anyway, there are a lot of steps involved and it was my hope that this GrainFather thing would make my life a bit easier and I was really looking forward to trying it out this weekend. Sadly, the goddamn thing came without a bunch of parts, leaving it unusable. They said they’d get the parts out to me ASAP and I understand that shit happens, but, damnit, this is pretty disappointing.
And today I’m back at work, which is not a big thrill, more snow in the forecast for this afternoon, and tomorrow it’s supposed to get frigid again (though not double-digits below zero), and if that wasn’t bad enough, I have a goddamn dentist appointment on Friday.
I’m ready for spring.
I think our heat wave is over today. I am sure it is since I am picking up a grill from a Freecycler.
That sounds like an huge effort, pj. Is it tastier DIY?
80 degrees tomorrow. 40 mph winds with gusts to 50. Wonder what our snowball Senator thinks of record heat in February? Everyting is F I N E.
Well, I’m still learning. But it’s pretty neat and kinda fun to take water and grains and turn them into something. And I really don’t like bottled beer anymore – it tastes a lot better on tap, whether it’s homebrew or commercial.
Maybe I can retire some day and open a homebrew store.

Agreed! How could you keep from smiling when looking at the “urn”?
I just don’t understand anything about writing here anymore. It’s impossible to edit really- I get all the source code along with what’s been written, I never can tell where it’s going to show up (at the end or following something that I wasn’t commenting on), some emoji’s have gone to heaven evidently (like the priest with the incense) and ‘flash your boobies’ (altho that wouldn’t be right).
Yeah, some WordPress updates made certain things stop working, and I had to switch to other plugins. Plus there was an issue that took out WordPress, so I had to rebulid it and was fortunate to get the old posts and comments back again. I guess some of the smileys didn’t make it.
And a few weeks back the web host claimed there was “malware” somewhere on the server in one of my domains, though they couldn’t tell me where and they shut the site down. They gave me a long list of “suspect” files (the vast majority of which were plain text – txt, css, html, etc. that couldn’t possibly be malicious). I suspect they were just trying to get me to pay $250 for them to do an “offical” clean and scan. So I took off all the stuff that never gets used or hasn’t been used in ages (forums, a couple of Drupal sites I was playing with, chat room, photo galleries and other stuff) and told them to turn it back on.
I think now you get an edit screen that edits the source code, which I guess if you’re not familiar with can be a bit confusing. Sorry about that.
Never mind about the priest. I must have been too sleepy earlier.
I’d love to hear Earl weigh in on Skalia. Last night I was wondering if Kent Jones was still with Maddow and, lo and behold, he pops up on her show seconds later.
I might have guessed the affect wolves would have on deer but I would not have thought about the rivers. Nice video. Thanks.
I watched some of Morning Joke. It seems Joe and his pals are concerned about President Trump. They seem to think his appeal is his feistiness. And, they wish lazy, dopey Marco would be feisty and thus win. I think Trump’s appeal is his racism. That’s not to say the rest of the Rethugs aren’t racist, they just aren’t racist enough.
I think it is more CYA for them. Joey the Scar didn’t quite ride the post-Imus Morning Joke platform to his own candidacy for PotUS and now thinks he can latch on to the Trümpf train for a possible VP slot or some other position. Mika is just a fluffer for both of them. Unfortunately for both, Der Dönald likes using them just where they are. Every now and then they will need to ‘show’ that they are not in the Trümpf tank but it is all a big charade and mutual circle jerk. And MSNBC gets a lot of Der Dönald excloo so everybody wins except the country.
My dad is a Trump supporter and he likes him because, “He says it like it is.” He also thinks he can get things done. When I told pops all that was done under Obama, he said, “Don’t give me that crap.”
So, basically, a white guy who has filed bankruptcy at least 4 times and has been married 3 times and has multiple business failures and started out with daddy’s money, is better than anyone with real ideas and a track record.
I’m really kind of scared that he’s going to be the next Preznit.
It’s certainly looking that way.
A few years ago we discovered that Mike has canadian citizenship because his mother was a canadian citizen when he was born. It’s cold there and the winters are snowy but it’s trumpless.
I’m starting to wish I’d moved there 10-15 years ago when I was young enough to get work. Now I’m kind of terrified of what’s gonna happen here. I read that the judge in the e-mail “scandal” is close to issuing subpoenas, and no matter how innocuous it all truly is, the Republicans and their pals in the media are going to to turn it into a huge deal. Any of those Republicans would be worse than bad – especially with a rubber stamp Congress (and Supreme Court – with Scalia’s vacant seat, and maybe Ginsburg at some point, who’s almost 83) to back them.
I might have to start praising Jesus and get ready to work until I croak.
Here’s some exciting news:
Well, there you have it. So don’t bother voting?
Well, it was wrong about 1960, so there’s at least some hope.
I’ll vote to try and make sure that idiot at least doesn’t win NY’s electoral votes.
Jiminey Christmas. I knew this guy was off his rocker, but really??? I did not understand why there was no autopsy performed on a sitting United States Supreme Court Justice; it was very odd.
Justice Scalia spent his last hours with members of this secretive society of elite hunters
When Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died 12 days ago at a West Texas ranch, he was among high-ranking members of an exclusive fraternity for hunters called the International Order of St. Hubertus, an Austrian society that dates back to the 1600s. MORE….
Well, this doesn’t make sense. A pillow case over his eyes because of the weight of the pillow. Huh? I think I’ll go find the Alex Jones channel….
Texas sheriff’s report reveals more details on Supreme Court Justice Scalia’s death
A Texas sheriff’s department released an incident report late Tuesday that revealed new details of the discovery of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia’s body, as well as the name of the friend who accompanied him on the hunting trip and the items found inside the ranch bedroom where the justice was found.
In response to a public records request made by The Washington Post, the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office released an incident report from the sheriff’s investigation of Scalia’s death at the Cibolo Creek Ranch on Feb. 13. The report stated that the justice’s body was found in bed with a pillowcase covering his eyes. A breathing apparatus was on the table next to the bed, but it was switched off. Scalia was lying on three pillows “stacked up to elevate his head.”
Scalia’s sheets and pillows “were still in the creased position from that day’s room service, indicating that there was no struggle involved,” the report said. The top pillowcase “appeared to have shifted at some point in the night due to the weight of his pillow, causing the pillow case to slide down and cover his eyes.” ……..
I have friends and friends of friends who are ‘jugglers and the clowns’ the Boho Grove invites to their events. Sadly, they thonk i’t cool because they get to touch the 1% for a few hours or days and enjoy the good life. They all lose major brownie points with me.
Texas isn’t really known for doing a bang-up job investigating high-profile deaths.
Here’s an interesting little read from Veterans Today (whatever the hell it is they are – they seem to be more entertaining than Alex Jones at any rate).
Hmmmm. The plot thinkens.
Long form. Happy B’day, JC!
