So, Friday’s finally here. I’ve learned a lot this week. For instance, I learned I kind of enjoy having an hour and ten minute commute. I suppose if I had to pay for the gas I wouldn’t be to crazy about it, but I like having the time to drive and listen to my podcasts. I also learned that it’s more fun to go to a class to learn about the things I do for a living than it actually is to go to work and do the things I do for a living. My clients at work are just too damn needy and annoying. Oh well. One more day of playtime, and it’s back to the salt mines next week. Have a good one.
So, for those of you who were worried, the renegade bear has been captured and sent to rehab. Turns out he was already tagged and collared, and is from south of here. They took him away in the back of a Subaru or something, so I don’t think he was exactly a big enormous monster bear.
Too bad. I had a bet he’s turn out to be a Newfoundland.
Another sign of global wamring. Black bears migrating north for cooler climates. Black bears have evolved into snow birds. Next they will step up from Subarus to Winnebagos.
What if they threw an election and no one cared?

It’s rainy and gray, but the birds are at the feeder and the cat wants to go out. I don’t let my cats out, except for Clifford who gets to run around the backyard as long as someone watches to make sure he doesn’t run into the woods.
But Clifford doesn’t know about weather, so even when it’s poring he wants to go out and if I show him it’s wet and rainy out he complains as if I’ve done this bad weather thing to annoy him.

Black Bear hmmm reminds me whennnnnn………
In the mountains there was this Dear WILD OLD Man of the Mountains, Black Bear. that would lay & eat the wild berries, and at times slept darn near next to my home.
I was coming home and as I was unlocking my gate to this side of mountain … this ol’ gruff “mock” hunter/neighbor ran up saying he just killed the ol’ bear in his garbage and show’d me a picture of the grand old bear of the mountain dead, killed amongst that garbage’s garbage. “You Idiot!”, I screamed! “You have just caused the destabilization of this side of the mountain.” With detest and disgust, I got into my truck and drove up the mountain. …. And sure enough, the new resident was an angry young bear that tore up & “claimed” (scented) many homes, including mine…. :fist: A!I!V!
Actually, they shot him the ass with a tranquilizer gun, then he said GRRRRR, GRRrrr, Grr…” and slid out of the tree.
In this case, I think it was more on search of food. In NYS, we have black bears up in the Adirondacks, but also down in what we call the ‘Southern Tier.’ He was from down there. Problem is, there are less and less woods all the time, and the bears are happy to hang out around garbage dumps. I guess her got tired of the garbage down in Cortland County, and wanted to try some of our Onondaga County cuisine.

He expects me to do two things, flip or fly. I don’t do either. Hangs him up.
I told him, I said, “Mr. Bear, I’m God’s Own Drunk and I love every hair on your twenty-seven acre body. I’m a fearless man!”
Said, “I want you to go… I know you got bear friends over the hill there. Harry Bear, and Tim Bear, and Jelly Bear, and Tony Bear, and Teddy Bear, and Field Bear, Hazel Bear, John Bear, Pete Bear, and Rare Bear! Go over and tell all of them that I’m God’s Own Drunk tonight and I love everything in God’s green creation. I love them like brothers but if they give me any trouble I’m gonna run every God-damn one of ’em off the hill!”
I moved up. Don’t you know he moved back two feet.
I reached up and took the bear by the hand. I said, “Mr. Bear, we’re both beasts when it comes right down to it.”
He’s a lookin’ down at me.
I said, “I want you to come with me. You’re gonna be my buddy. Buddy Bear.”
Took him right by his big, old, shaggy man-island sized hand, led him on over, sat him down by the still.
Well, he’s a sniffin’. He’s a sniffin’. He knows there’s honey dew around there, some kind of honey bear honey dew of some kind. He’s a sniffin’
I know what he’s a sniffin’ at.
I took a slash or two myself to taste ‘er out and I filled him a bottle.
Did you ever see them bears, the sillouette of them bears at the circus, suckin’ up that sasparilla? Ahhh, it’s a fine lookin’ sight!
And he downed another bottle. And he downed another bottle. And I put two more in him and pretty soon he started to sniff and snort. Tapped his foot.
And he got up and started to do The Bear Dance. Two sniffs, three snorts, a half a turn and one grunt.
And I’m trying’ to do it, but I couldn’t do it ’cause it was just like a jitterbug dance, it was so simple it evaded me.
But we was a dancin’ and yellin’!
And God’s sweet moon a hangin’ in the sky, and God’s sweet lanterns out there and there’s jubilation and love on that hill.
And finally my love, it up and got so strong it overwhelmed my soul, and I laid back in the sweet green hill with that big, old Buddy Bear’s paw right in mine and I went to sleep.
And I slept for four hours and dreamt me some tremulous dreams.
And when I woke up that old, yellow, moon was a hangin’ in the sky, and God’s sweet lanterns is out there and my buddy the bear was a missin’.
And you know something else, brothers and sisters?

The failure of Palemale’s and Lola’s eggs to hatch is a mystery. Lincoln believes it is because the structure that was built to hold the nest allows air to come up through the bottom and thus affects the temperature of the eggs. However, the hawks that make a rather skimpy nest on the top of the air conditioner cage, have successfully hatched 3 chicks.
It is sad, though, and all of Palemale’s fans (he has thousands) are very unhappy. It seems that nature will do whatever nature will do and there is not much we can do about it.
I know that Palemale is probably around 20 years old. I do not know if that is old for a hawk or if age affects their reproduction.

This really fucking sucks. I can’t express how terrible I feel.
That really does suck. I think the wildlife people here in Colorado are better equipped to deal with bear situations. There’s hundreds of miles of backcountry they can relocate them to. It sounds like the NY people went as crazy with the tranquilizers as a New York City cop in the Bronx with a minority.
There was just no reason for that. They didn’t have to fuck with the bear in the first place. He was no threat to anybody.
It’s just plain laziness on the part of the DEC.
Poor teddy.
Terrible about the bear. The Dept of Environmental Conservation doesn’t get the conservation part of their title. They suck in NYC, where they try their best to foist noxious uses on poor neighborhoods and keep them out of rich ones.
